  • hp XW8000 work station power supply

    - by user281745
My power supply went up in the XW8000 and I bought a new corsair cx500. I installed it but when I hook it up and I turn the computer on I get a beeping noise from the computer. I looked at the old power supply and the new power supply. The only difference is that the new power supply has 500 watts and the old one is 450 watts and the old PSU has a brown wire and the new power supply has 2 orange wires at the end. I found out that it is a sense wire that is in a different location so I was wondering how do I fix this problem.

  • Turn a Kindle into a Weather Display Station

    - by Jason Fitzpatrick
The e-ink display, network connectivity, and low-power consumption of Kindle ebook readers make them a perfect candidate for an infrequently refreshed high-visibility display–like a weather display. Read on to see how to hack a Kindle to serve up the local weather. Tinker and hardware hacker Matt Petroff hacked his Kindle to accept input from a web server and then, graciously and in the spirit of geeky projects everywhere, shared his source code. He explains the heart of the project: The server side of the system uses shell and Python scripts to convert weather forecast data into an image for the Kindle. The scripts first download and parse forecast data from NOAA via the National Digital Forecast Database XML/SOAP Service. After parsing the data, the data then needs to be converted into an image. This is accomplished by preprocessing a specially crafted SVG file to insert temperatures, forecast symbols, and days of the week. This SVG is then rendered as a PNG using rsvg-convert and converted to a grayscale, no transparency color space as required by the Kindle using pngcrush. Finally, it is copied to a public location on the web server. The Kindle is set to refresh twice a day (you could easily tweak the scripts for a more frequent refresh) and displays the forecast as seen in the photo above–with crisp and easy to read text and icons. Hit up the link below for more information and the project’s source code. • How to Stop Charging IPod Touch

    - by itsaboutcode
Most of the time when I sync my IPOD touch, its battery gets filled up but sync is not complete and sign on the battery changes which means I should unplug it, should I do it? I mean it's in the middle of sync and if I unplug it, it can lose some data or have some other problem. So what is the way to stop it charging when it is plugged in but I don't want it to get charged?

  • Internet Radio Station for University

    - by ryan
I am trying to help my University Student Radio station rethink the setup of the way they stream music, but I have some questions regarding the use of Ubuntu to stream music. Currently, the radio station uses two windows machines: one of which is used to stream the radio station and serve the website, and the other is used by rotating djs to select songs and create playlists. The computer used by djs feeds mono into the sound card of the server and the server streams the feed online. -Ideally I would like to maintain a two-computer setup: One computer as server, and another that is used to select and play music by rotating djs. -I would like to use Ubuntu for the server. -I would like to use Windows for the other machine. -The server should be able to stream song information. First, is there a way to somehow get the song information from an analog feed? Second, what is the best streaming server for radio? I have encountered shoutcast, icecast, and darwin, but I don't know where to begin in attempting to gauge them. Finally, if anyone has any tips or pointers about small internet radio station management/ setup they would be appreciated as this is my first radio station, and I am eager to hear of past experiences.

  • Running a small IPTV station

    - by nixterrimus
I'm looking to run an iptv station for my dorm. I know I can serve multicast so that's not a problem. The station will serve out podcasts and other cc licensed content. The target endpoint is xbmc- a media center. So far I know that I need to serve an rtp stream over udp that's streaming an mpeg-4 avc main or high profile with aac ( or ac3 ?) audio. I've had some luck using vlc with vlm to stream but it seems limited. What are my other options?  Everything has to run on Linux- hopefully open source. How can I use playlists and not live streams? What are my software options?

  • how to create a simple radio station [on hold]

    - by John
I've been digging around for ages but not getting very far so any links or tips would be massively appreciated. I want to create a central "radio station" in my home to stream one playlist to any computers pointing their browser to the ip within my internal network. I have an old mini slave mac mini running ubuntu and was originally thinking I could get php and apache to handle this but then quickly realised that of course, php will serve out streaming independently per connection ie no radio station. Are there any servers already built for this sort of behaviour? is shoutcast one of the only versions Thanks, John

  • 13-inch Macbook Pro Battery Not Charging

    - by hkhalidz
I have a 13 inch Macbook Pro. From last night on, it says 'Battery Not Charging'. The charger's light is always green and if I remove the charger it turns off(means the battery is completely empty). I tried reseting the PRAM and SMC, but not dice. I also tried using different chargers with out any success. The Macbook Pro is from the new generations and is over a year old. The Power Information section indicates 458 for the Power Cycles. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • iPad USB Charging Utility for Dell Optiplex

    - by BreakPhreak
As you probably know already, an iPad requires a certain power on USB port to be charged from. Thus, some motherboard manufacturers (such as ASUS, Gigabyte etc) had released a special driver that recognizes that an iPad is connected to the port and adjust the USB power accordingly. On one of my computers (Gigabyte motherboard) it works fine. But other one is Dell Optiplex 780 and the regular googling by "<motherboard type> + iPad charging" doesn't seem to bring encouraging results. Just for completeness: no, the iPad is not being charged without any special driver installed (out of the box) either. Any suggestions will be welcomed.

  • ASUS N550 laptop not charging on ubuntu after updating kernel

    - by OBY Trance
I'm using Ubuntu 13.10 on a pretty new ASUS N550jv laptop. When I was using kernel linux-image-3.11.0-11 everything was quite well (kinda..), however, when I updated the kernel using the automatic update, the kernels which were released afterwards (12+) were faulty on my machine, and caused the battery not to be charged and only stay at their current charging level (even when the machine was off!) The only fix I had was to roll-back to the '..11' version (on boot screen - advanced options), and hard-reboot (AC cord disconnected and reconnected) but now version 14 was released and "pushed away" the good old version 11. How can I fix that?? Please help me...

  • ISO/IEC Website and Charging for C and C++ Standards

    - by Michael Aaron Safyan
The ISO C Standard (ISO/IEC 9899) and the ISO C++ Standard (ISO/IEC 14882) are not published online; instead, one must purchase the PDF for each of those standards. I am wondering what the rationale is behind this... is it not detrimental to both the C and C++ programming languages that the authoritative specification for these languages is not made freely available and searchable online? Doesn't this encourage the use of possibly inaccurate, non-authoritative sources for information regarding these standards? While I understand that much time and effort has gone into developing the C and C++ standards, I am still somewhat puzzled by the choice to charge for the specification. The OpenGroup Base Specification, for example, is available for free online; they make money buy charging for certification. Does anyone know why the ISO standards committees don't make their revenue in certifying standards compliance, instead of charging for these documents? Also, does anyone know if the ISO standards committee's atrociously looking website is intentionally made to look that way? It's as if they don't want people visiting and buying the spec. One last thing... the C and C++ standards are generally described as "open standards"... while I realize that this means that anyone is permitted to implement the standard, should that definition of "open" be revised? Charging for the standard rather than making it openly available seems contrary to the spirit of openness. P.S. I do have a copy of the ISO/IEC 9899:1999 and ISO/IEC 14882:2003, so please no remarks about being cheap or anything... although if you are tempted to say such things, you might want to consider the high school, undergraduate, and graduate students who might not have all that much extra cash. Also, you might want to consider the fact that the ISO website is really sketchy and they don't even tell you the cost until you proceed to the checkout... doesn't really encourage one to go and get a copy, now does it?

  • Bash script throws, "syntax error near unexpected token `}'" when ran

    - by Tab00
I am trying to write a script to monitor some battery statuses on a laptop running as a server. To accomplish this, I have already started to write this code: #! /bin/bash # A script to monitor battery statuses and send out email notifications #take care of looping the script for (( ; ; )) do #First, we check to see if the battery is present... if(cat /proc/acpi/battery/BAT0/state | grep 'present: *' == present: yes) { #Code to execute if battery IS present #No script needed for our application #you may add scripts to run } else { #if the battery IS NOT present, run this code sendemail -f [email protected] -t 214*******@txt.att.net -u NTA TV Alert -m "The battery from the computer is either missing, or removed. Please check ASAP." -s smtp.gmail.com -o tls=yes -xu [email protected] -xp *********** } #Second, we check into the current state of the battery if(cat /proc/acpi/battery/BAT0/state | grep 'charging state: *' == 'charging state: charging') { #Code to execute if battery is charging sendemail -f [email protected] -t 214*******@txt.att.net -u NTA TV Alert -m "The battery from the computer is charging. This MIGHT mean that something just happened" -s smtp.gmail.com -o tls=yes -xu [email protected] -xp *********** } #If it isn't charging, is it discharging? else if(cat /proc/acpi/battery/BAT0/state | grep 'charging state: *' == 'charging state: discharging') { #Code to run if the battery is discharging sendemail -f [email protected] -t 214*******@txt.att.net -u NTA TV Alert -m "The battery from the computer is discharging. This shouldn't be happening. Please check ASAP." -s smtp.gmail.com -o tls=yes -xu [email protected] -xp *********** } #If it isn't charging or discharging, is it charged? else if(cat /proc/acpi/battery/BAT0/state | grep 'charging state: *' == 'charging state: charged') { #Code to run if battery is charged } done I'm pretty sure that most of the other stuff works correctly, but I haven't been able to try it because it will not run. whenever I try and run the script, this is the error that I get: ./BatMon.sh: line 15: syntax error near unexpected token `}' ./BatMon.sh: ` }' is the error something super simple like a forgotten semicolon? Thanks -Tab00

  • Netbook performs hard shutdown without warning on low battery power

    - by Steve Kroon
My Asus EEE netbook performs a hard shutdown when it reaches low battery power, without giving any warning - i.e. the power just goes off, without any shutdown process. I can't find anything in the syslog, and no error messages are printed before it happens. I've had this problem on previous (K)Ubuntu versions, and hoped updating to Ubuntu Precise would help resolve the issue, but it hasn't. The option in the Power application for "when power is critically low" is currently blank - the only options are a (grayed-out) hibernate and "Power off". I have re-installed indicator-power to no effect. The time remaining reported by acpi is unstable, as is the time remaining reported by gnome-power-statistics. (For example, running acpi twice in succession, I got 2h16min, and then 3h21min remaining. These sorts of jumps in the remaining time are also in the gnome-power-statistics graphs.) It might be possible to write a script to give me advance warning (as per @RanRag's comment below), but I would prefer to isolate why I don't get a critical battery notification from the system before this happens, so that I can take action as appropriate (suspend/shutdown/plug in power) when I get a notification. • Macbook Battery Charging Troubles

    - by bobber205
Problem: Occasionally, my macbook's battery will say it's charging and actually won't be. It stays at 0% for a long time. Other info: I thought it was my battery (laptop was 3 years old). Got a new battery. Issue did not go away. Got a new power supply. Did not go away. Ended up getting a unibody macbook pro. :) (We even ended up moving to a new house). Now still having the issue. The only thing I can think of is my power strip, which is the only thing that has stayed constant. Is it possible for the strip to be affecting the amount of watts my macbook(s) are getting and preventing it from properly charing the battery. I think it goes in and out, the battery picks up the slack and once it's empty the computer shuts down b/c there's no power at all for a second or two. Funny thing is I have a desktop PC on this same strip and it has never had issues with power. Thanks! :)

  • Weird mouse/keyboard freezups when using PowerPoint 2007 with IBM/Lenovo docking station

    - by DanM
I'm not sure what part of my system is responsible for this, but when using PowerPoint, I have problems when trying to resize drawing objects. I'll be dragging the handle and suddenly, the object will deselect and whatever is behind the object will select and start moving around. Next thing I know, the keyboard won't type anymore, and the only way to fix it is to unplug the USB and plug it back in. In case it's hardware related, I'm using an IMB Thinkpad T60P in a docking station. My keyboard is a Microsoft Natural Keyboard Pro. My OS is Windows XP SP3. I've never noticed this happening in anything besides PowerPoint, and I don't know anyone else who has this problem (even people with similar setups). Any ideas what it could be? Edit Well, it looks like I only get the problem if I plug the mouse into my docking station's USB. If I plug directly into the laptop's USB, everything works fine. And, again, this problem is only with PowerPoint. I tried playing with some drawing objects in Word and had no issue no matter where my mouse was plugged in. I should also mention I tried a different mouse (a standard Microsoft corded mouse instead of my Logitech trackball), but that made no difference. So, I don't think it's anything specific with the trackball or the trackball's driver. I tried searching Google but came up empty, so I'm guessing this problem is something unique to my setup. If you have any thoughts or ideas to try, I'd love to hear them.

  • Computer speakers receive radio station signal

    - by squircle
I have a set of Logitech 5.1 speakers where each speaker and the source plug into the subwoofer. I'm using a Griffin Firewave with output from my MacBook Pro, and output from my custom-built desktop with a switch in the middle (built it myself out of an old Belkin A/B parallel switch). Recently, I've noticed that I can hear a local Punjabi radio station being picked up by my speakers, and the volume of this interference increases as I increase the volume of the speakers. I'm fairly sure that this radio station is at the low-end of the FM spectrum, below 90MHz (or it may be at the high end, above 105MHz, my memory isn't infallible). It gets quite annoying as I can't put my audio very loud without the interference. I've tried to put a ferrite core on the input cable just before the 3.5mm jacks plug into the subwoofer. I don't know if putting the same core around all three of the cables (green, black, orange) would negate the effects, but I'm assuming not. There has been no change. Is there any reason why this would be happening? I'm assuming the interference is coming somewhere between the FireWave and the subwoofer, because the noise gets amplified with volume increases. If anybody has any suggestions, I'd be grateful!

  • MightyMintyBoost Is a 3-in-1 Gadget Charger

    - by ETC
If you’re looking for a versatile battery booster, this DIY 3-in-1 solar/usb/wall current charger known as the MightyMintyBoost will top of your phone, mp3 player, and other gadgets with ease. Instructables user Honus didn’t just build the MightMintyBoost to geek out and show off his electronics project skills (although it’s certainly a nifty little project to do so), he’s serious about solar power and the impact clean energy has: Apple has sold over 30 million iPodTouch/iPhone units- imagine charging all of them via solar power…. If every iPhone/iPodTouch sold was fully charged every day (averaging the battery capacity) via solar power instead of fossil fuel power we would save approximately 50.644gWh of energy, roughly equivalent to 75,965,625 lbs. of CO2 in the atmosphere per year. Granted that’s a best case scenario (assuming you can get enough sunlight per day and approximately 1.5 lbs. CO2 produced per kWh used.) Of course, that doesn’t even figure in all the other iPods, cell phones, PDAs, microcontrollers (I use it to power my Arduino projects) and other USB devices that can be powered by this charger- one little solar cell charger may not seem like it can make a difference but add all those millions of devices together and that’s a lot of energy! His MightyMintyBoost is a battery booster for devices that can charge via USB and it accepts incoming current from the solar panel on top (or, on cloudy days can be charged via a wall charger or the USB port on your computer). • hostapd running on Ubuntu Server 13.04 only allows single station to connect when using wpa

    - by user450688
Problem Only a single station can connect to hostapd at a time. Any single station can connect (W8, OSX, iOS, Nexus) but when two or more hosts are connected at the same time the first client loses its connectivity. However there are no connectivity issues when WPA is not used. • What's the performance on USB docking stations, and can they be used when laptop is closed?

    - by David
I'm looking into a docking station for a Dell Studio laptop. I don't see the traditional docking stations I'm familiar with - the kind (for a Dell Latitude, for example) where you sit the laptop on top of a long row of pins. Instead, I'm seeing a lot of USB docking stations. When I close my laptop, I want it to go into sleep mode. If I then connect a USB docking station to the laptop while it's closed, will it wake up? What's the performance on USB 2.0 docking stations with a new Dell Studio? Can all of the video and internet traffic really go through a USB 2.0 connection while still providing the best video frame rates and internet speeds? When you undock, I assume you'd have to use the "Safely Remove Hardware" feature in Windows. Will that successfully 'remove' everything attached to the docking station - external drives, thumb drives, etc?

  • Using airport extreme base station as a wireless G to wireless N bridge

    - by micmcg
Due to unfortunate placement of various wall outlets in my new apartment, my adsl 2 modem + router is not able to be placed next to my airport extreme base station (AEBS). I'd prefer not to run cat5 cable between them, but I still want to use the wireless N on the AEBS, because it will have a high speed NAS plugged in via gigabit ethernet so I want to maximise the wireless transfer speed to my 27" iMac. Is it possible to use one of the radios in the airport extreme to bridge the wireless G network with the router, and the wireless N radio to broadcast normally? The only traffic going over the G network should be internet (24mbps ADSL2) so it should never get saturated. Thanks

  • Debian: Firefox or Iceweasel default printer for POS station

    - by Bubnoff
Context Using Debian 6.04 "Squeeze" as POS station. There are two printers installed: Network printer and a receipt printer It absolutely must be able to print by default to the receipt printer on a certain website though the system default is a network printer. In Debian ...it doesn't. Problem I've set up XP, 7, Ubuntu and even Mac OSX this way, so I'm no stranger to setting Firefox up this way ...same Iceweasel/Firefox settings ...complete fail. Always uses system default no matter what the settings, or, which printer you print from. To get this to work on other systems you do this: Print a page in Firefox using desired printer. Ensure print.save_settings is true. Firefox remembers last printer used Set print.always_print_silent = true The end. This works on every OS I've set up ....except Firefox and Iceweasel in Debian. My only recourse seems to be to set the receipt printer as default or go back to bloaty Ubuntu/Mint ...etc.
