  • MSWord table shading prints too dark

    - by Relaxed1
My friend has a very light shading in his MSWord tables. However they still print too dark to read the text. When emailed to a colleague using the same printer, it prints light nicely. However they cannot find any setting that is different between them. Any ideas? Thanks! (P.s. for myself this would help for non-tables also, when 'highlighting' text. I do know that 'shading' gives more colour options for non-tables, but it would be nice to know anyway. Thanks)

  • Very Dark Windows 7 Screen

    - by user147521
My Gateway laptop -Windows 7- screen became too dark a few days ago after I finished installing Windows automatic update. I can see nothing unless I use a flashlight. Windows login screen is the only bright screen for few seconds. What should I do to resolve this issue? I checked power-saving/ Power Options settings and rebooting in Safe Mode. I tried to lower the refresh rate but it did not allow me. The laptop adapter type is ATI Radeon Xpress series. I calibrated display color. I uninstalled and reinstalled the adapter. I tried to update the driver but the driver is up to-date. Any help would be appreciated.

  • make emacs in a terminal use dark colors and not light font-lock colors

    - by vy32
I am using emacs on MacOS 10.6 with Terminal. I have a white background. It's very hard to read quoted C++ strings. They are coming up in pale green. Keywords are in turquoise. After searching through the source I cam across cpp.el and have determined that I am using the cpp-face-light-name-list instead of cpp-face-dark-name-list. Apparently this function is supposed to chose the correct list based on the background color: (defcustom cpp-face-default-list nil "Alist of faces you can choose from for cpp conditionals. Each element has the form (STRING . FACE), where STRING serves as a name (for `cpp-highlight-buffer' only) and FACE is either a face (a symbol) or a cons cell (background-color . COLOR)." :type '(repeat (cons string (choice face (cons (const background-color) string)))) :group 'cpp) But it doesn't seem to be working. What should I put in my .emacs file so that I get the cpp-face-dark-list instead of cpp-face-light-list? Thanks!

  • Color scheme: Smooth Dark

    - by xsl
    As requested by James McNellis I exported my Visual Studio color scheme and posted it here. It is basically the default Visual Studio color scheme with a dark background and slightly modified colors. Visual Studio 2010 Download: http://www.file-upload.net/download-2588083/Smooth-Dark.vssettings.html Installation: Select Tools > Import and Export Settings. Choose Import Selected Environment Settings. Select the file you downloaded. Import only the color settings. Click Finish. Console2 Installation In the file console.xml replace the color element with: <colors> <color id="0" r="23" g="27" b="32"/> <color id="1" r="120" g="150" b="180"/> <color id="2" r="139" g="163" b="137"/> <color id="3" r="119" g="181" b="181"/> <color id="4" r="181" g="122" b="119"/> <color id="5" r="186" g="141" b="183"/> <color id="6" r="168" g="171" b="129"/> <color id="7" r="182" g="182" b="182"/> <color id="8" r="114" g="114" b="114"/> <color id="9" r="120" g="150" b="180"/> <color id="10" r="139" g="163" b="137"/> <color id="11" r="119" g="181" b="181"/> <color id="12" r="181" g="122" b="119"/> <color id="13" r="186" g="141" b="183"/> <color id="14" r="168" g="171" b="129"/> <color id="15" r="255" g="255" b="255"/> </colors>

  • Use Adwaita Dark for Libre Office and possibly other apps too?

    - by Relik
I would like to know how to force some apps to use the Adwaita dark theme. I noticed by default that the movie player and photo viewer apps in gnome shell use Adwaita Dark while most other apps use the Light variant. I would really like to set Libre Office to use Dark instead of Light. How would I go about doing this? I found the site below, but the instructions seem a bit outdated and they do not work for GTK3. http://urukrama.wordpress.com/2008/07/13/setting-a-custom-gtk-theme-for-specific-applications/

  • TextMate suddenly highlighting all text dark red...?

    - by AP257
I'm using TextMate on Snow Leopard, don't know much about how it works. After I hit an unknown keyboard shortcut, it suddenly decided to highlight almost all text in my Python files dark red - making all my Python virtually unreadable! I must have accidentally pressed a shortcut - but I've no idea what I did or how to turn it off, and can't find any relevant help in the manual or form. Even just 'turn off all highlighting' would do. Anyone know how to turn this highlighting off? Bit desperate!

  • White (Light) vs. Black (Dark) Backgrounds: Health Effects

    - by Hosam Aly
I am adding a bounty to this question, hoping for some scientific research results. Thank you everybody! I have recently tried working on dark backgrounds, and it seemed (to me) to be easier on the eye. However, today I read Gerrie Schenck's comment on this answer, in which he said that mainframe developers were advised to use white backgrounds instead of black, as it is said that white is easier on the eye. So which one is actually better for the eyes in the long run? I would be thankful for any (scientific) references about the subject, as my eyes really need some relaxation. I wanted to make this question a community wiki, but I think that the least I can do to thank people is to reward their answers, so I'm leaving it as a normal question. Many, many thanks for your help. P.S. I don't know which tags would be appropriate for this question, so I'd be grateful if you could tag it in a better way than I did.

  • Hidden Features and Dark Corners of STL?

    - by Andrei
C++ developers, all know the basics of C++: Declarations, conditionals, loops, operators, etc. Some of us even mastered the stuff like templates, object model, complex I/O, etc. But what are the most hidden features or tricks or dark corners of C++/STL that even C++ fans, addicts, and experts barely know? I am talking about a seasoned C++ programmer (be she/he a developer, student, fan, all three, etc), who thinks (s)he knows something 99% of us never heard or dreamed about. Something that not only makes his/her work easier, but also cool and hackish. After all, C++ is one of the most used programming languages in the world, thus it should have intricacies that only a few privileged know about and want to share with us. Boost is welcome too! One per post with an example please P.S Examples are important for other developers to copy and paste!

  • Being pressured to GOTO the dark-side

    - by Dan McG
We have a situation at work where developers working on a legacy (core) system are being pressured into using GOTO statements when adding new features into existing code that is already infected with spagetti code. Now, I understand there may be arguments for using 'just one little GOTO' instead of spending the time on refactoring to a more maintainable solution. The issue is, this isolated 'just one little GOTO' isn't so isolated. At least once every week or so there is a new 'one little GOTO' to add. This codebase is already a horror to work with due to code dating back to or before 1984 being riddled with GOTOs that would make many Pastafarians believe it was inspired by the Flying Spagetti Monster itself. Unfortunately the language this is written in doesn't have any ready made refactoring tools, so it makes it harder to push the 'Refactor to increase productivity later' because short-term wins are the only wins paid attention to here... Has anyone else experienced this issue whereby everybody agrees that we cannot be adding new GOTOs to jump 2000 lines to a random section, but continually have Anaylsts insist on doing it just this one time and having management approve it? tldr; How can one go about addressing the issue of developers being pressured (forced) to continually add GOTO statements (by add, I mean add to jump to random sections many lines away) because it 'gets that feature in quicker'? I'm beginning to fear we may loses valuable developers to the raptors over this...

  • iPhone: How to Determine Average Light/Dark of an Area of an UIImage

    - by TechZen
I need to place labels with a transparent background over a variable-content UIImage. Readability will vary significantly depending on the relationship between the color of the label's text and the color/luminosity of the area of the image displayed under the label. Since the image will be constantly changing, the color of the label's text needs to change in sync. I have found several techniques for determining the color, perceived luminosity etc of a single pixel. However, I need to rather quickly (while a view loads) determine the rough perceived color/luminosity of an area of the UIImage under the frame of the UILabel. I presume I will also need to measure the alpha because the same color/luminosity looks different at different alpha values. Is there a way to calculate such a value for an area? Will I be reduced to simply summing pixels? If it comes to that, is there an algorithm to accomplish this? I've thought of two possible approaches: Perform some "folding" operations i.e. combining pixels from one half of the area to the other half. Then repeat until I get a single value. Would this be practical? How would you logically combine pixels to average their perceived color/luminosity? Sample a statistically significant number of pixels in the area and then combine them (somehow) to get a rough measure. I think this problem comes up a lot these days with people being so found of customizing backgrounds. Seems like something that would be worth my time to bang out a category or class to handle this and then share it around.

  • how to move and print squares visited by a knight in following order?

    - by josh kant
Lets say you have a 5/5 board and you place and the knight started moving form the middle square. Every time knight moves it has to follow the following pattern. its easy if you draw what i mean. I am trying to code for the possible moves and print out the no. of moves in the nXn (in this case 5X5) board. The print out should be the no. of order in which the knight moved. { //move 1 //2 squares up and 1 to the left //move 2 //2 squares up and 1 to the right //move 3 //1 square up and 2 to the right //move 4 //1 square down and 2 to the right //move 5 //2 squares down and 1 to the right //move 6 //2 squares down and 1 to the left //move 7 //1 square down and 2 to the left //move 8 //one square up and 2 to the left } Any help would be appreciated. Thank you in advance..

  • How can one make the title bar text/buttons have better contrast on dark colors in Windows 8?

    - by zeel
When Windows 8 color setting are set to a very dark color, such as black or navy blue, the title bar text and the minimize/maximize buttons are nearly invisible. This makes dark colors difficult to work with. In Windows 7 there was an advanced color options, this is gone in 8. The registry keys associated with this seem to still be present, but they have no effect. Is there a way to change this? Or a third party application that can do it? I don't want to use the ugly high contrast theme, I want to use the nice Win 8 theme with a dark color.

  • Is there a way to prevent users from adjusting their gamma correction to 'cheat' their way out of a 'dark' area?

    - by Athix
In almost every game I've come across that includes a dark situation designed to change the way a user interacts with the environment, there are always some players who turn up their monitor's gamma correction in order to negate the desired effect. Is there a way to prevent users from adjusting their gamma correction to 'cheat' their way out of a challenge? (the darkness) I'd imagine if you could reliably retrieve the current gamma correction of the user's monitor, you could use that to more or less prevent the advantage it would otherwise grant without causing the normal users any inconvenience.

  • How to make "Chameleonic Ambiance Script" select a lighter hue for dark wallpapers?

    - by Nirmik
I just started using an amazing script that makes the default "Ambiance" theme use that selected color. More details can be found Here I find this really amazing. But with my wallpaper being as shown below, the selection color, progress-bars color as after running the script are too dark (that can be seen in the following screenshot). I've learnt that what is done is the average color from the wallpaper is selected and then its tint is used (which is always a darker tint). So can I make this algorithm or whatever select a lighter tint of the average color?? Or can it be made to select the lightest color instead of the average color from the wallpaper??

  • Can I make Launcher icons dark/dim unless app is running (then in color)?

    - by Greg
To improve visibility of what Launcher-Applications I have running (instead of relying solely on that small right-facing triangle), is it possible to make Launcher-icons default to a black&white/dark/dim state? And then when a launcher-icon is clicked (or the super+# shortcut used) that icon would gain color and backlight signifying the app is running? If the Launcher icon's app is not running, it is dimmed out. If the icon's app is running, it is showing in color and backlit. I'd prefer an "inhouse" solution as opposed to having to install additional software, but I'm interested in hearing all options for if this is possible.

  • TLS (STARTTLS) Failure After 10.6 Upgrade to Open Directory Master

    - by Thomas Kishel
Hello, Environment: Mac OS X 10.6.3 install/import of a MacOS X 10.5.8 Open Directory Master server. After that upgrade, LDAP+TLS fails on our MacOS X 10.5, 10.6, CentOS, Debian, and FreeBSD clients (Apache2 and PAM). Testing using ldapsearch: ldapsearch -ZZ -H ldap://gnome.darkhorse.com -v -x -b "dc=darkhorse,dc=com" '(uid=donaldr)' uid ... fails with: ldap_start_tls: Protocol error (2) Testing adding "-d 9" fails with: res_errno: 2, res_error: <unsupported extended operation>, res_matched: <> Testing without requiring STARTTLS or with LDAPS: ldapsearch -H ldap://gnome.darkhorse.com -v -x -b "dc=darkhorse,dc=com" '(uid=donaldr)' uid ldapsearch -H ldaps://gnome.darkhorse.com -v -x -b "dc=darkhorse,dc=com" '(uid=donaldr)' uid ... succeeds with: # donaldr, users, darkhorse.com dn: uid=donaldr,cn=users,dc=darkhorse,dc=com uid: donaldr # search result search: 2 result: 0 Success # numResponses: 2 # numEntries: 1 result: 0 Success (We are specifying "TLS_REQCERT never" in /etc/openldap/ldap.conf) Testing with openssl: openssl s_client -connect gnome.darkhorse.com:636 -showcerts -state ... succeeds: CONNECTED(00000003) SSL_connect:before/connect initialization SSL_connect:SSLv2/v3 write client hello A SSL_connect:SSLv3 read server hello A depth=1 /C=US/ST=Oregon/L=Milwaukie/O=Dark Horse Comics, Inc./OU=Dark Horse Network/CN=DHC MIS Department verify error:num=19:self signed certificate in certificate chain verify return:0 SSL_connect:SSLv3 read server certificate A SSL_connect:SSLv3 read server done A SSL_connect:SSLv3 write client key exchange A SSL_connect:SSLv3 write change cipher spec A SSL_connect:SSLv3 write finished A SSL_connect:SSLv3 flush data SSL_connect:SSLv3 read finished A --- Certificate chain 0 s:/C=US/ST=Oregon/L=Milwaukie/O=Dark Horse Comics, Inc./OU=MIS/CN=gnome.darkhorse.com i:/C=US/ST=Oregon/L=Milwaukie/O=Dark Horse Comics, Inc./OU=Dark Horse Network/CN=DHC MIS Department 1 s:/C=US/ST=Oregon/L=Milwaukie/O=Dark Horse Comics, Inc./OU=Dark Horse Network/CN=DHC MIS Department i:/C=US/ST=Oregon/L=Milwaukie/O=Dark Horse Comics, Inc./OU=Dark Horse Network/CN=DHC MIS Department --- Server certificate -----BEGIN CERTIFICATE----- <deleted for brevity> -----END CERTIFICATE----- subject=/C=US/ST=Oregon/L=Milwaukie/O=Dark Horse Comics, Inc./OU=MIS/CN=gnome.darkhorse.com issuer=/C=US/ST=Oregon/L=Milwaukie/O=Dark Horse Comics, Inc./OU=Dark Horse Network/CN=DHC MIS Department --- No client certificate CA names sent --- SSL handshake has read 2640 bytes and written 325 bytes --- New, TLSv1/SSLv3, Cipher is AES256-SHA Server public key is 1024 bit Compression: NONE Expansion: NONE SSL-Session: Protocol : TLSv1 Cipher : AES256-SHA Session-ID: D3F9536D3C64BAAB9424193F81F09D5C53B7D8E7CB5A9000C58E43285D983851 Session-ID-ctx: Master-Key: E224CC065924DDA6FABB89DBCC3E6BF89BEF6C0BD6E5D0B3C79E7DE927D6E97BF12219053BA2BB5B96EA2F6A44E934D3 Key-Arg : None Start Time: 1271202435 Timeout : 300 (sec) Verify return code: 0 (ok) So we believe that the slapd daemon is reading our certificate and writing it to LDAP clients. Apple Server Admin adds ProgramArguments ("-h ldaps:///") to /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/org.openldap.slapd.plist and TLSCertificateFile, TLSCertificateKeyFile, TLSCACertificateFile, and TLSCertificatePassphraseTool to /etc/openldap/slapd_macosxserver.conf when enabling SSL in the LDAP section of the Open Directory service. While that appears enough for LDAPS, it appears that this is not enough for TLS. Comparing our 10.6 and 10.5 slapd.conf and slapd_macosxserver.conf configuration files yields no clues. Replacing our certificate (generated with a self-signed ca) with an Apple Server Admin generated self signed certificate results in no change in ldapsearch results. • Knight movement.... " how to output all possible moves. "

    - by josh kant
    hi tried the following code and is still not working. it is having problem on backtracking. it just fills the squares of a board with numbers but not in expected order. The code is as follows : include include using namespace std; int i=0; int permuteno = 0; bool move(int *p[], int *used[] ,int x, int y,int n, int count); bool knights (int *p[], int *used[],int x,int y,int n, int count); void output(int *p[],int n); int main(char argc, char *argv[]) { int count = 1; int n; //for size of board int x,y; // starting pos int **p; // to hold no. of combinations int **used; // to keep track of used squares on the board if ( argc != 5) { cout << "Very few arguments. Please try again."; cout << endl; return 0; } n = atoi(argv[2]); if( argv[1] <= 0 ) { cout << " Invalid board size. "; return 0; } x = atoi(argv[4]); y = atoi(argv[4]); cout << "board size: " << n << ", "<< n << endl; cout << "starting pos: " << x << ", " << y << endl; //dynamic allocation of arrays to hold permutation p = new int *[n]; for (int i = 0; i < n; i++) p[i] = new int [n]; //dynamic allocation of used arrays used = new int*[n]; for (int i = 0; i < n; i++) used[i] = new int [n]; //initializing board int i, j; for (i=0; i output(p,n); if (knights(p,used,x, y, n, count)) { cout << "solution found: " << endl < int i, j; for (i=0; i else { cout << "Solution not found" << endl; output (p, n); } knights (p,used, x, y, n, 1); //knights (p,used,x, y, n, count); cout << "no. perm " << permuteno << endl; return 0; } void output(int *p[],int n) { int i = 0,j; while ( i !=n) { for ( j=0; j bool move(int *p[], int *used[] ,int x, int y,int n,int count) { if (x < 0 || x = n) { return false; } if ( y < 0 || y = n) { return false; } if( used[x][y] != 0) { return false; } if( p[x][y] != 0) { return false; } count++; return true; } bool knights (int *p[], int *used[], int x,int y,int n ,int count) { //used[x][y] = 1; if (!move(p,used,x,y,n, count)) { return false; } if (move(p,used,x,y,n, count)) { i++; } p[x][y] = count; used[x][y] = 1; cout << "knight moved " << x << ", " << y << " " << count << endl; if(n*n == count) { return true; } //move 1 if (!knights (p,used, x-1, y-2, n, count+1)) { used[x][y] = 0; //p[x][y] = 0; } //move 2 if (!knights (p,used, x+1, y-2, n, count+1)) { used[x][y] = 0; //p[x][y] = 0; } //move 3 if (!knights (p,used, x+2, y-1, n, count+1)) { used[x][y] = 0; //p[x][y] = 0; } //move 4 if (!knights (p,used, x+2, y+1, n, count+1)) { used[x][y] = 0; //p[x][y] = 0; } //move 5 if (!knights (p,used, x+1, y+2, n, count+1)) { used[x][y] = 0; //p[x][y] = 0; } //move 6 if (!knights (p,used, x-1, y+2, n, count+1)) { used[x][y] = 0; //p[x][y] = 0; } //move 7 if (!knights (p,used, x-2, y+1, n, count+1)) { used[x][y] = 0; //p[x][y] = 0; } //move 8 if (!knights (p,used, x-2, y-1, n, count+1)) { used[x][y] = 0; //p[x][y] = 0; } permuteno++; //return true; //}while ( x*y != n*n ); return false; } I has to output all the possible combinations of the knight in a nXn board.. any help would be appreciated...
