  • Bit Flipping in Hex

    I have an 8 digit hexadecimal number of which I need certain digits to be either 0 or f. Given the specific place of the digits is there a quick way to generate the hex number with those places "flipped" to f. For example: flip_digits(1) = 0x000000f flip_digits(1,2,4) = 0x0000f0ff flip_digits(1,7,8) = 0xff00000f I'm doing this on an embedded device so I can't call any math libraries, I suspect it can be done with just bit shifts but I can't quite figure out the method. Any sort of solution (Python, C, Pseudocode) will work. Thanks in advance.

In short, I have to hard code an algorithm or any means of encrypting the message.     I'm trying to interface with a hardware device via the serial port. When I use software like Portmon to see the messages they look like this: 42 21 21 21 21 41 45 21 26 21 29 21 26 59 5F 41 30 21 2B 21 27 42 21 21 21 21 41 47 21 27 21 28 21 27 59 5D 41 32 21 2A 21 28 When I run them thru a hex to ascii converter the commands don't make sense. Are these messages in fact something different than hex? My hope was to see the messages the device is passing and emulate them using c#. What can I do to find out exactly what the messages are?

When I execute it, here is the output that I get : Hex value is 00 Hex value is 00 Hex value is 00 Hex value is 01 Chunk length is 0 Can any one please help me understand the error here.     I have this pseudo-code in java: bytes[] hash = MD5.hash("example"); String hexString = toHexString(hash); //This returns something like a0394dbe93f bytes[] hexBytes = hexString.getBytes("UTF-8"); Now, hexBytes[] and hash[] are different. I know I'm doing something wrong since hash.length() is 16 and hexBytes.length() is 32. Maybe it has something to do with java using Unicode for chars (just a wild guess here). Anyways, the question would be: how to get the original hash[] array from the hexString. The best way (ie efficient and least code) is: string hexstr = "683A2134"; byte[] bytes = new byte[hexstr.Length/2]; for(int x = 0; x < bytes.Length; x++) { bytes[x] = Convert.ToByte(hexstr.Substring(x * 2, 2), 16); } In the case where I have a 32bit value I can do the following: string hexstr = "683A2134"; byte[] bytes = BitConverter.GetBytes(Convert.ToInt32(hexstr, 16)); However what about in the general case? Is there a better built in function, or a clearer (doesn't have to be faster, but still performant) way of doing this? I would prefer a built in function as there seems to be one for everything (well common things) except this particular conversion.

  • Can I interpolate two HEX color values without converting them to RGB?

    I'm trying to make a Gradient Class for a Blackberry app. At first I thought about converting the HEX values to RGB and then interpolating them before converting the result back into HEX, but since I will be doing this for every pixel line of an area, and the calculations will be made by a mobile, I thought that maybe there's a more efficient way of doing it. Maybe involving those pesky bitwise operators which I know nothing of... or something. So, is there a way of interpolating without converting to RGB and back? If so, is it faster than the original way? In any case, can you help me make the most efficient color interpolation? Thank you in advance!

    This question might be subjective, but I'm hoping there's some consensus that I just don't know about. Short hex numbers are relatively easy to spell out (e.g., 0xC4A might be "cee-four-ay"). Hex numbers ending with a multiple of three zeros are likewise pretty easy (e.g., 0xC000 might be "cee-thousand"). But is there a concise way to pronounce 0xFFFF0000 or 0xCA000000? Magic numbers like 0xDEADBEEF are popular for their pronounceability, but I'm mostly asking about large-ish, round numbers that seem like they should have a more concise pronunciation.

    We've been using Seagate Info Desktop 7.5 for a while and it stopped working after 31 Dec 2010. After a lot searching on the web, we found out from the SAP threads that a particular dll file(ciweb.dll) had this line of code "expires= Friday,31-Dec-2010 00:00:00 GMT",and this was causing the problem. The solution to the problem was to hexedit this dll file by changing the date to a later date. I have got no experience in hex editing a file. Would some please advise me with steps to do it?     I don't suppose anyone knows of a function (PHP, preferably) that can take a hex color code and give an approximate color name for that hex value. I don't need a solution with 100s of colors. Even if it just amounted to the colors white, black, red, green blue, brown orange and yellow, I'd be pretty well in shape.   • Trying to figure out how to check a checksum

    I'm trying to figure out how to check a checksum. My message looks like this: 38 0A 01 12 78 96 FE 00 F0 FB D0 FE F6 F6 being the checksum. I convert the preceding 12 sets in to binary and then add them together. Then attempt a bitwise operation to apply the 2s complement. I get a value of -1562, but I can't convert it back to hex to check if the value is correct.     Hi, im trying to sort my transformed output by a element which contains a hex value. <xsl:sort select="Generation/Sirio/Code" data-type="number"/> Values are plain old Hex: 00 01 02 ... 0A ... FF but they are getting sorted like that: 0A FF 00 01 02, which indicates the sorting method fails as soon as there are character involved. How can i work around this? Thank you very much!

But plain + returns NaN and sum() expects only one parameter. XSLT and XPATH are quite nice, but it goes on my nerves that easy operations like adding two hex values just dont work as easy as it should.

In mySQL, hex(23229877460) = 5689BCCD4. Also, every other language seems to do this correctly. A 16 digit long hex is like 4 gazillion (16^16), right? How can I get objective-c to format hex numbers that other languages can understand?

The imagecolorallocate works like that: imagecolorallocate($im, 0xFF, 0xFF, 0xFF); So, I am trying to do the following: $r_bg = bin2hex("0x".substr($text_color,0,2)); $g_bg = bin2hex("0x".substr($text_color,2,2)); $b_bg = bin2hex("0x".substr($text_color,4,2)); $bg_col = imagecolorallocate($image, $r_bg, $g_bg, $b_bg); It does not work. Why? I try it also without bin2hex, it also did not work. Can anybody help me with that?
