• Breaking into database administration

  Hello to all, I am brand new on this site and look forward to interacting with each of you. I am graduating in June with my Bachelors Degree in Computer Information Systems with hopes of become a DBA in the future. I am currently taking a Database class now and studying SQL Server/T-SQL on the side. My experience in IT is limited to managing an Access database at my last employer for two years. What are the chances of landing a junior DBA position after I graduate?

• New website, plans to go large. How do you protect yourself?

  I'm planning to create a new site that (in hopes) will make it to a decent state of popularity and use. I have made sites before, but they weren't serious, with any intended purpose other than personal and friend use. I've never been able to find a solid post on good steps to protecting yourself, and your site/idea before you start. This site will always be free, and will not be bringing it any revenue by ads or whatnot, but I plan to in the future and would want to make I'm in the clear legally for one. Do you need to copyright anything? Or anything of the same concept as copyright? Do I make an LLC to operate it under? Apologies for this extremely poorly written question, basically I want to be both legal, and I want to make sure nobody can just rip my idea or name(s). • Why does 12.04 freeze when using multiple desktops?

  I am using 12.04 32-bit, upgraded from 11.10. Within the last week and a half Unity has hung on me with no option but a hard reboot, which I hate. It usually happens when I am using multiple desktops and applications and switching desktops. The screen just hangs, sometimes broken between desktops and applications, I can move my mouse but cannot click on anything. alt+f2 , HUD , super+w/s/d and alt+tab/~ does nothing, they do not activate. I let it rest for 15-20 minutes in hopes it will sort itself out but nothing. I'd hate to move to Unity 2D, but I can't risk having to do hard reboots/shutdowns, or moving to a different DE. • How do I install the driver for my Linksys AE1200 Wireless-N USB Adapter?

  I recently downloaded Ubuntu from the main website with the hopes of dual booting it with Windows. While the operating system works, it says that I need to install a driver for my graphics card. When I type in my password the installation fails. I figure it is because I need Internet access. I tried to install my WiFi USB adapter with the installation disc but Ubuntu doesn't seem to run the setup when I click the exe. What are my available solutions as I would really like to use Ubuntu from my programming and Windows for my gaming needs? • Change libcups to repository version

  I upgraded my libcups package to 1.6 in hopes to fix something but I just buggered things up more. So I want to reinstall it to the version on the repository (1.5.3 I think). I've tried to do a reinstall using ~#: apt-get install --reinstall libcups2 but that tells me it cannot be downloaded so refuses to upgrade. I can't just do: ~#: apt-get remove libcups2 ~#: apt-get install libcups2 as that wants to remove 299 packages along with it. Totaling 668MB so I am hesitant as that will probably take 6 hours to download on my connection.

• Installing 12.10 messed up Xorg

  So I finally decided to upgrade from 12.04 and now my ubuntu install has been rendered unusable. I'm getting the "no screens detected" error from xorg in the console, and no mattr how many times I reinstall it xorg keeps throwing the same errors. I already had to do a bunch of hacks like nomodeset just to get to the console, else I would get an infinite tabulator after the purple boot screen. The machine has a 4200HD IGP, I even tried installing fglrx legacy (4xxx series and below are not supported in regular fglrx anymore) which was a subpar driver in 12.04 but in hopes that the machine would at least work, but nope, nothing at all. Anyone had the same problem? how do I fix it? EDIT: just wanted to add that I upgraded to 13.04 and it didn't solve anything, in fact it might have broken things even further.

• Can't set proper resolution with a Geforce 520

  I installed the 12.04 LTS but cannot get my two monitors working. The latest nvidia-current drivers installed, but i just cant set proper resolution. My card is a geforce 520 1 DVI 1 VGA. With the nvidia drivers installed i can set the DVI monitor to 1600x1200 but the VGA no further than 1360x768 (with nvidia-settings). Without the nvidia driver (using the nouveau) it doesn't work either. This same issue i had with 11.10 and i had high hopes for 12.04.

• How would you approach developers you don't already know as a developer to offer them a position? [closed]

  We've been trying to find a second developer for the company and have posted job ads online but so far there have been no developers that have been interested, and only a single one that has some experience in Python (that failed a fairly basic practical). It seems like the it's really difficult to find decent people here in Singapore, even reasonable juniors that you can teach. I'm contemplating whether I should go reach out directly to people on Stack Overflow and github and in the hopes that they are interested. I'm thinking I would message the person with only a few sentences, stating the they seems capable from their online presence and that I'd like to work with them. Is this kosher? I know I dislike recruiters and unsolicited mail just as much as the next guy.

• windows system (bootloader) partition accidently deleted during multiple installs

  After experimenting with multiple variations of backtrack and xbmcbuntu variations of Ubuntu with dual boot successfully, my windows partition became unrecognizable to grub. I used my windows boot CD to try to correct the problem. However, I deleted all partitions except for the NFTS one that contains my old windows install. (And, merged all other ones into that in hopes of getting back to the windows boot loader and out of grub) Now, all I get is a grub command prompt when I try and boot the system (how??? - I thought I deleted grub) And, now the windows boot disc doesn't even recognize the install. I've tried TRK to try and resolve the problem. Though I must admit ignorance in correctly using this utility. I've searched for other answers to this problem. Any help would be much appreciated.   I've decided that it's time for me to move on from Geeks with Blogs.  It's been a great platform but unforuntately I've not used it nearly as much as I should.  It's been over a year and a half since my last post.  It's not that I haven't had worthwhile stuff to post, it's more due to a lack of motivation.  Knowing how I work, I think part of the problem with me using GWB is that it's free.  If I don't use it, I don't feel like I'm wasting anything.  With that in mind, I've decided to move to a paid host in hopes that drives me to post more frequently.  My new blog is located at the following address:http://thirteendaysaweek.comIn the coming days and weeks I'll be working on moving my content to the new site and will leave posts here that redirect to the new site.

• Working in America from the UK

  I've been toying with the idea for the last few years and I figured it was about time to start asking questions about it! Here goes: I'm a Senior-level .NET/C# programmer from the UK, with 7 years of commercial experience in industry and looking to work over across the pond in the big ol' USA! This is with a view to live there on a permanent basis. My idea is to try and set up some interviews and go over there for a week to attend them, then I guess wait for responses in hopes they'd sponsor me for a working VISA. I'd like to know is there anyone out there with any experience of doing the same thing? Was it difficult finding work? Is there anything I should know before embarking on this route? How long did the transition take? Update: Considering the down votes, either I've posted this in the wrong place, or people really don't like my query. If so, please shed some light.

• Boolean logic parser for SQL

  This is going to sound crazy but does anyone have techniques that would allow me to parse boolean logic strings in Sql Server 2005 without extraordinary/rediculous effort? Here is an example: (SOMEVAR=4 OR SOMEVAR=5) AND (NOT OTHERVAR=Y) I feel like recursion would help a lot if that were possible in Sql but I'm not really sure how to go about that sort of thing. If not, maybe there's a way to attach an external system to do the recursion for me? Don't worry, I'm not getting my hopes up.

  The closest-related implementation in Haskell I have seen is the forward mode at http://hackage.haskell.org/packages/archive/fad/1.0/doc/html/Numeric-FAD.html. The closest related related research appears to be reverse mode for another functional language related to Scheme at http://www.bcl.hamilton.ie/~qobi/stalingrad/. I see reverse mode in Haskell as kind of a holy grail for a lot of tasks, with the hopes that it could use Haskell's nested data parallelism to gain a nice speedup in heavy numerical optimization.

• Is there a better way than a sequence of if's to handle events?

  I recently ran across several objects implemented to handle events with a hard coded mapping using this pattern: public void handleEvent(Event event) { if(event.getCode() == SOME_STATIC_EVENT) doSomething(event); if(event.getCode() == ANOTHER_STATIC_EVENT) doSomethingElse(event); } where doSomething functions are implemented as methods of the same class. In hopes of striving for looser coupling, how would you suggest abstracting out this pattern? Also, what's the best approach for mapping 0..N functions to a fired event?

• Good book for a software developer doing part-time (Linux) system administration work

  In many smaller organisations, developers often end up doing some system administration work (for obvious reasons). A lot of the time, they have great developer skills, but few system administration skills (perhaps all self-taught), and so have to learn as they go, which is fairly inefficient. Are there canonical (or simply great) books that would help in this situation? More advanced than just using a shell (presumably a developer can do that), but not aimed at someone that hopes to spend many years doing this work. Ideally, something fairly generic (although specific to a distribution would be OK), covering databases, networking, general maintenance, etc, not just one specific task. For the most part, I'm interested in shell-based work (i.e. no GUI installed), although if there's something outstanding I'm missing, please point it out. (As an analogy, replace "system administration" with C, and I'd want K&R, with C++ and I'd want Meyers' "Effective C++").

• Oracle EE 11.2g: how to generate fresh new redo logs

  Hi, In the company I work for we are heavy users of vmware machines. Almost all our projects are developed inside a virtual environment up to the point where we have to deploy them into a production system. While in development, some colleagues of mine deleted the redo log files for Oracle in the hopes of gaining some free space. Now they are unable to start the database instance. Is there a way of generating a fresh new redo log so that the instance can be started? This is urgent and even though I'm currently googling for an answer I have yet to find it. Thanks in advance.

• Options to optimize lotus notes 8.5.X

  Has anyone found actually useful optimization methods for the bulky, fat, eclipse giant, nuissance that is Lotus Notes 8.5? I want it to be fast, and not eat up system resources like crazy while I run it ALL day (as it is my company's corporate mail / cal / scheduling solution). I've tried various hacks for the JVM heap size (if I recall correctly). None really bring a performance improvement. I have a dual core cpu, if that helps (I tried going the route of optimizing JAVA for 2 cores in hopes it would work, but seen no speed improvement). Notes is just sooo bloated, anyone have any suggestions to optimize/mod this thing so it is more responsive and less of a resource hog. Note: I don't want to switch to the web version, or the standard stripped down versions, I am aware of those, I just cannot since we don't run those internally for the company.

• Apache2 Doesn't Serve Subdomain Alias

  I'm trying to prefix an existing Rails application with a sub-domain, essentially I want the sub-domain to serve the same application. Right now apache2 serves my application with "www.example.com" or "example.com". I adjusted my sites-available virtualhost in hopes of allowing for "foo.example.com" or "www.foo.example.com" however both instances are met with a domain not found error. Here is my current VirtualHost in /etc/apache2/sites-available/example.com: <VirtualHost *:80> ServerName example.com ServerAlias foo.example.com *.example.com www.foo.example.com www.example.com DocumentRoot /home/user/my_app/public <Directory /home/user/my_app/public> AllowOverride all Options -MultiViews </Directory> </VirtualHost> Any ideas? Note, I realized I probably don't need a wild card sub-domain for what I'm trying to do, I simply added that in as a last-ditch effort. Edit: The actual domain is virtualrobotgames.com with the desired subdomain being roboteer.virtualrobotgames.com

• Major Issue with Asus M4A78T-E Bios

  I am having major issues with my bios and I have tried three different forums in hopes that there is someone out there that can help me.... The issue is that every single time I turn off my computer, when I turn it back on the bios resets and tries to boot from a floppy drive....first problem is I dont have a floppy drive and secondly it does not read my HDD.... I tried everything to fix this...I tried replacing the cmos battery, I tried replacing the sata cable, and I tried a different sata port....none of these things seem to be working. Now the messed up part about all of this is that i am on my computer right now....If I take the battery out and put it back in and setup the bios again manually I am able to get into my computer...but this is NOT normal... Why is my bios resetting constantly when I power down my computer? Please assist me I need my computer for business

When I start tomcat6 with /etc/init.d/tomcat6 start I get * Starting Tomcat servlet engine tomcat6 /bin/bash already running. and the server fails to start. Unfortunately, there is nothing in /var/log/tomcat/catalina.out to help debug the issue. With some cleverly placed echo statements it seems to be the line from /etc/init.d/tomcat6: start-stop-daemon --start -u "$TOMCAT6_USER" -g "$TOMCAT6_GROUP" \ -c "$TOMCAT6_USER" -d "$CATALINA_TMPDIR" \ -x /bin/bash -- -c "$AUTHBIND_COMMAND $TOMCAT_SH" The only thing I've changed in this script is TOMCAT6_USER=root. In servers.xml, the only thing I've changed is <Connector port="80" protocol="HTTP/1.1" from port 8080. I have tried reinstalling the package by first removing everything sudo apt-get --purge remove tomacat6 and then sudo apt-get install tomcat6 but this has not solved the issue. I have also restarted the server multiple times in hopes of some magic. Everything was working until I restarted my server. Any ideas?
