• Very strange networking problem in all computers in my house

  I have three computers in my house: One desktop (wired), and two laptops (wireless). I'm using Cox Communications (yes they suck), and yesterday they had a major outage. I know it was them because I called them up when I started losing connection to the internet. All the computers can connect just fine, but they don't have internet access. It just says "local only". The weird thing is, some of them work occasionally. For the first day my laptop was working perfectly, while all the other computers couldn't connect. Later on in the day it got reversed, and the desktop was the one with internet access. By the second day the problem on Cox's end was fixed, but we still had no access. I called them up and they reset my modem, and did the usual troubleshooting stuff. It never fixed the problem, but we found out that the problem had to do with conflicting IP addresses. My router was a Linksys WRT54G and it was about 5 years old. I figured it might have gotten damaged from the outage since it was so old, and now it's having trouble "fixing itself" and giving out the proper IP addresses. So I bought a new router, a Cisco Linksys E1000. I set everything up, and still the same problem. My computer has access right now (that's how I'm writing this), but no other computers seem to be able to get access. Is there possible damage to the modem? Can someone help me please? Sorry for this being so long.

• (Zywall USG 300) NAT bypassed when accessing in-house-server From LAN Via domain name

  My situations is like this; i host a number of websites from within our joint network solution. On the network is basically 3 categories: the known public, registered via mac, given static dhcp lease the anonymous lan connections, given lease from specific dhcp range switches, unix hosts firewall Now, consider following hosts which are of interest 111.111.111.111 (Zywall USG 300 WAN) 192.168.1.1 (ZyWall USG 300 LAN) load balances and bw monitors plus handles NAT 192.168.1.2 (Linux www) serves mydomain1.tld and mydomain2.tld 192.168.123.123 (Random LAN client) accesses mydomain1.tld from LAN 23.234.12.253 (Random External client) accesses mydomain1.tld via WAN DNS A records are setup so that both mydomain1.tld and mydomain2.tld points to 111.111.111.111 - and the Linux www serves the http parts with VirtualHost configurations, setting up the document roots pr ServerName, this is not so interesting though.. NAT rule translates 111.111.111.111:80 to 192.168.1.2:80 (1:1 NAT) Our problem follows; When accessing http://mydomain1.tld from outside (23.234.12.253 example host) the joint network - everything is fine, zywall receives requests via port 80 and maps it to the linux host' httpd. However - once trying to go through the NAT from LAN side (in-house, 192.168.123.123 example host) then one gets filtered in the Zywall port 80 firewall. I know this only because port 443 is open for administration interface and https://mydomain1.tld prompts for zywall login. So my conclusion is, that the LAN that accesses 111.111.111.111 in fact are routed to 192.168.1.1 whilst bypassing the NAT table. I need to know how to setup NAT / Policy Route, so that LAN WAN LAN will function with proper network translations instead of doing the 'quick nameserver lookup' or whatever this might be.

• Streaming music throughout the house on a budget?

  I was wondering whether anyone knew of a way to stream music throughout a house on a budget? I want to avoid spending any money on this (eg. I don't want to buy a d-link style device). It would be ideal if I could use my existing hardware and some open source software. I have three old(ish) PCs knocking around. I'm happy to stick either Windows or Linux on them. They can all be hooked up to speakers. The ideal solution would result in: the same audio being heard from every device (eg. when you hear a beat on one device, you'd hear it at the exact same time on another (so you don't get any echo)) I'd be able to control the source application (eg. the songs lined up) with my iPhone. I realise I'm being cheeky with those two wishes - but you never know your luck. Am I asking for too much, or is there a piece of software/protocol out there with this purpose in mind? I've been searching for sometime now, but haven't had any joy. Thanks in advance.

• Google Maps mashup for notes/househunting

  I'm house-hunting at the moment and I'm trying to geek it out er I mean streamline the decision-making process. I'm currently using google maps's "my maps" feature to store pins to properties. I create one map per estate agent, then put relevant into into the individual pins. The idea being, I can look at the map and quickly choose which property to view next. However the pins don't currently link back to the map they're owned by, so you have to hunt a bit to get the estate agent info, it's a hassle to get all maps displayed in a new session if you have lots of agents, and each pin doesn't automatically show its bubble so you have to do lots of clicking to see all the info you want. I've tried Evernote, but despite its tag system initially showing some promise, I can't find a way to seemlessly integrate maps. A few google searches don't turn anything up either. Even the big sites, like http://www.rightmove.co.uk, don't seem to provide any maps integration by default. You can see an individual house's location, but not all results of a search. So is there a web site or windows program I could use to do something like this? Viewing all properties on a map is a must, as is quick access to contact details.

• Dreamhost DNS CNAMEs work at my house, not for anyone else

  I have my domain BQQKSHELF.COM that I bought through Dreamhost. I set up a CNAME so that zach.bqqkshelf.com points to my app at zach.heroku.com. The app at Heroku is working fine. Everyone can agree on that. When I go to zach.bqqkshelf.com, everything seems to work okay too. When I ask my roommate to go to it, it works. When I go to it on my iTouch, it works. When I IM my friends and ask them to go to zach.bqqkshelf.com, they get a time out error. How is this possible?

• Deployment/provisioning tool for commercial applications (not developed in-house)

  I help manage a few hosted commercial applications, and we have a lot of manual processes involved when doing new customer-instance deployments into the shared (multitenant) environment. Allow me to describe the most relevant features, and then we can talk about the tools. We have an application on AIX, that requires dozens of changes to config files (some plain text, some XML) as well as a good number of commands to be run on multiple servers - some to start the new instance, some to restart our shared authentication and reporting engines, etc. The config changes follow templates, of course. The servers in question will also depend on the initial conditions specified by the implementer/deployer - we may choose to deploy a given customer to our servers in Europe, or one set of servers may be active-active whereas a different set of servers is active-passive - in short, there's a lot of complications. We have another application that run on IIS 6 and SQL. The DBAs don't want any automation of the SQL components and that's fine with me, but automating the IIS bit would be great. For a new customer instance, we make a filesystem copy of a template Virtual Directory target named after the new customer, make a new AppPool to match, edit a VirDir template .xml file to replace the filepaths and AppPool names with the new ones, and then make a new VirDir from the modified template XML to point to the new filesystem folder and app pool. For the first case, something like ControlTier or Chef might be good. For the second, the new(ish) Web Deploy from MS would probably do a good job. Has anyone used these tools or others to do something similar for applications? More of a nice-to-have, not a fixed requirement - Has anyone used anything that works on both platforms? I'm looking for something free, because the official word is that within a year, we will have whatever HP has renamed the OpsWare suite, which should be able to do stuff like this. Edit - based on someone's suggestion, looking at CFengine for the AIX application, it doesn't seem to address my pain. The problem isn't keeping a given config synced across dozens of servers, we have rsync for that. The problem is that onboarding a new customer instance touches dozens of files, putting pieces of the same or similar information into them - some are new stanzas in existing files, some are new files, and some are new directories. This is a several-hours-long process that is also error-prone because it's mostly done by hand. I guess I'm looking for config-file generation and management. I have built a small Perl script to do something similar for a much smaller case - it binds a CSV file into variables, and then does a copy-and-search-and-replace from a set of template config files. I could probably do the same here.

As a new company, are there more benefits to bringing someone on-board as part of the organization to manage the server, versus going with a third-party management company? • In-house Trusted Certificate

  Hi there I'm a developer looking at introducing ClickOnce deployment for an internal .NET Winforms application that will be distributed via the corporate network. Now I would like to deploy this application under the full trust model however in order for that to happen I need to sign the software with a certificate. I can do that with a "test" certificate that has no information of the publisher etc, however that means an extra step will occur on the users workstation where they will have to confirm that the software is OK. So what I want to know is. is there a way I can get my IT Infrastructure guys to create me a an "internal" certificate from the domains Certificate Authority, or do I have to go and pay for a certificate from somebody like VeriSign? (Possibly 2 rug rats or more) The real estate company calls and says they have a showing for your house between the hours of 3pm-6pm. You have to keep the children occupied. You realize this is the 5th time you have shown your house this week. What is a programmer to do?……Setup a webcam, find a motion detection software that has support to launch a program and of course, Visual Studio 2010. First, comes the tools Some sort of webcam, I chose the WinBook because a friend of mine loaned it to me. It is a basic USB2.0 camera that supports 640x480 without software.  Next up was find webcam software that supports launching a program. WebcamXP support this. VS 2010 Console Application. A cell phone that you can check your email. You may be asking, why write code to send the email when a lot of commercial software motion detection packages include that as base functionality. Well, first it cost money and second I don’t want the picture of the person as that probably invades privacy and as a future buyer, I don’t want someone recording me in their house. • Passing single attributes to associated factories

  I'm looking for a way to pass fields into the factories of associated models without having to explicitly call the factory itself. For example, lets say I have some factories like so: Factory.define :person do |person| person.name "Default Bob" person.sex "M" person.house {|p| p.association(:house)} end Factory.define :house do |house| house.color "Red" house.has_ac true house.suburb {|h| h.association(:suburb)} end Factory.define :suburb do |suburb| suburb.name "Little boxes" end This is fine and all, but if I want to use factories to create someone in a specific house in a specific suburb I have do this: sub = Factory(:suburb, :name => "Blue town") house = Factory(:house, :color => "Blue", :suburb => sub) person = Factory(:person, :name => "Bill", :house => house) While this isn't bad in this small case, my actual models sometimes have 7 or 8 associations, and when I want to create an object whose associations I only care about a single attribute, the code for this starts to get really heavy. Is there somewhat I can pass attributes to nested Factories without having to recall the Factory itself?

Two of our partners rather like the idea of leasing a house rather than standard office-space. We have 4 partners and one employee. I'm against the idea at this moment in time.   I have a company that would like to bring me in to serve me an hour long exam. No resources other than a pencil and paper. I really couldn't get any sort of feedback on the type of exam (implementation or generic) beside that it would test a few specific areas. Have you done anything like this? What sort of questions did they ask? What's a good way to prepare? I'll probably go in a couple weeks before school starts back up. A time sensitive exam structure is a weak point for me, so what should I absolutely focus down on? If they like the exam, that's when I'll get a face-to-face meeting.   I see that most implementations of JAX-RS represent a class object containing a list of elements as follows (assume a class House containing a list of People) <houses> <house> <person> <name>Adam</name> </person> <person> <name>Blake</name> </person> </house> <house> </house> </houses> The result above is obtained for instance from Jersey 2 JAX-RS implementation, notice Jersey creates a wrapper class "houses" around each house, however strangely it doesn't create a wrapper class around each person! I don't feel this is a correct mapping of a list, in other words I'd feel more confortable with something like this: <houses> <house> <persons> <person> <name>Adam</name> </person> <person> <name>Blake</name> </person> </persons> </house> <house> </house> </houses> Is there any document explaining how an object should be correctly mapped apart from any opninion?

To clarify my question: Oracle certification + Zero Oracle experience = 0% chance of Oracle DBA job. Perhaps, though: [foobar certification] + Zero IT job experience = nonzero chance of entry IT job?   In my game we see the floors of a house from the side, and the hero can take lifts -- a lift either goes up (to the next lift upwards), or down (to the next lift downwards), depending on the arrow as shown, and there's always a pair of exactly two lifts connected. That's the only way the hero can move vertically, though he can freely move horizontally. The house map is a randomized 11x5 grid with different items, and unpassable walls to the far left, far right, and sometimes in one of the two middle positions: My question: How can I ensure the map is always randomized yet always solvable and that the hero, starting at the left side of the bottom floor, can always leave it via any upwards-pointing lift at the top floor? For what it's worth I'm using the Lua language for development. Thanks so much!

  Why would you hire in-house over outsourcing in developing a product for your company? I can only think of a few but I'm not entirely sure if they're good enough reason. This is actually for a debate that I'm going to have in class. I'm more inclined on the outsourcing part but unfortunately, I was asked to switch to the in-house side of the debate. Any ideas? • Different icons and title for same iPad application

  I'm developing an iPad application that will be distributed "in-house" ie only inside enterprise. They asked me if i can produce 2 different releases of the same application to be installed on the same iPad. The first one will communicate with a production server while the second will use a sandbox server and will be used by user to learn the system. Server url will be changed in app settings. They told me to differentiate these releases by icon and title (and also, of course, by title in navigation bar). What's the best way to get this goal avoiding duplication of the project?

• Adding dynamic business logic/business process checks to a system

  I'm wondering if there is a good extant pattern (language here is Python/Django but also interested on the more abstract level) for creating a business logic layer that can be created without coding. For example, suppose that a house rental should only be available during a specific time. The thing is, it would have to be flexible enough to encompass a wide variety of rules: avoiding duplicates/overlaps (to continue the example "You already have a reservation for this time/location") logic rules ("You can't rent a house to yourself", "This house is in a different place from your chosen destination") sanity tests ("You've set a rental price that's 10x the normal rate. Are you sure this is the right price?" Things like that. Before I recreate the wheel, I'm wondering if there are already methods out there for doing something like this.
