  • Disable printing extraneous job info when I print a images

    As of 10/11/12 I this is still a problem. Peterling, that link you gave me was for Windows. Not Ubuntu. I need to know how to do this in Ubuntu. Whenever I print off an image, before the actual image prints, I get these weird "print job" sheets. (I named them that, because I don't know what else to call them.)   • How can I make Google show unit conversions by default?

    When I search for "4 inches in g" on my Windows Firefox I immediately get a unit conversion done by Google that shows up before the actual search results. On my Ubuntu 12.04 system this does not work though. I tried Firefox and Chromium and have no script blockers installed. I also switched off AdBlock Plus for testing but to no avail. I realize that this is not really Ubuntu doing something wrong but: Are there any settings I can modify to make Google show these results? I use them quite frequently and I believe (though I cannot test it anymore) that this used to work on my last Ubuntu System. Maybe there are some script sources that Ubuntu has disabled by default or something like that?

  • Best Graphics card (Setup) for three, high-res monitors attached to desktop

    I have been looking around a little bit, but most of the discussions are about problems with already existing systems (particular graphics card and setup etc.). I would like to ask what would be the best option for me if I want to build powerful desktop with triple monitor setup. I have one Dell UltraSharp U2713HM (27 inches, 2560x1440) and I was thinking about getting two more. Would it be possible to have those three working with ubuntu (kubuntu) on any graphics card out there today? What is the best option if it comes to choosing particular model? Should I use proprietary drivers or some open sourced ones? I am not a gamer. I mostly develop on my machines and running some computational tasks, but I would rather like to spend some more money and have setup where I don't see any lags :) thank You very much in advance!     Environment: Lenovo T530 running Windows 7. Have installed Ubuntu 14.04 on a virtual machine using VM Virtual Box. Have installed all the updates from both Virtual Box and Ubuntu. Problem: While in Ubuntu's desktop and other Ubuntu initiated programs, the window is reduced to about 3x4 inches showing in the middle of the rest of my regular Virtual Box window. I am seeing only the upper right hand of the screen output of what I would normally see. Please help. I've seen How do I install Guest Additions in a VirtualBox VM? But, none of these answers works in 14.04.

    Internally we work with metric units and use decimal fractions for sub units, e.g. 1cm or 0.35cm or 23mm) We're building a user oriented design tool for laying out reports and was wondering what the most most common approach taken by UI developers who are still working in Imperial measurements (Inches etc.) when it comes to decimalised fractions. Most of my cultural references point to people using 1/2, 1/4, 1/8 or 1/32 inch when measuring fractions. But when faced with decimal equivalent what do people tend to do? For example do people use 0.5, 0.25, 0.125 etc or do you people roll these up to say 0.5, 03, and 0.1 inch? Sorry for the confusing question.

    I'd like to export plotting symbols form R as a png graphic. But I haven't found a perfect way yet. Using png("symbol.png",width=20, height=20, bg="transparent") par(mar=c(0,0,0,0)) plot.new() symbols(1, 1, circles=0.3, bg=2, inches=FALSE, lwd=2, bty="n") dev.off() creates a little border around the symbol (I'd like it to be transparent) and the symbol isn't filling the whole space. Is there a more specific way of doing this ?

  • Is there a good dual monitor arm solution for iMac 27" i7s?

    I currently have an iMac 27" and am considering purchasing another to run in target display mode. My desk space is a little limited. Is there a dual monitor arm solution that can support the weight of two iMac 27" units (30.5 pounds (13.8 kg)) as well as their width (25.6 inches (65.0 cm)) in a side-by-side landscape configuration? I looked at the Ergotron LX Dual Side by Side but the iMacs appear to exceed the width and weight limit this device is rated for. I'm open to alternate solutions to arms, such as a multi-unit desk stand/mount, but a wall mount is not possible for me at this time. Thanks!

    I'm looking to buy a laptop with the following specs for a developer. The goal will be to have a development machine supplementing the devs desktop. During work hours the dev will be on a beefy desktop. For working while on the go: trains, client sites, code camps, it would be nice to have a machine which can run Visual Studio 2008 without needing to remote desktop into their primary machine. What do you think is the lowest cost laptop meeting this need? Here are the specs I have in mind: SSD drive 64GB-doesn't need to be huge, most data is stored on servers. Will need to fit Windows 7, IIS, SQL Server, and Visual Studio 2010. RAM-3GB processor =Pentium Core 2 duo Screen size = 14 inches. OS doesn't matter. It will be paved with Windows 7 Ultimate optical drive omitted would be a plus. weight and battery life aren't so important because the machine will be plugged in almost all the time.

  • MacBook Pro 15in High-res hard to read. What setting should I change?

    I just bought a new MacBook Pro with the high-res screen (1680x1050), but I noticed that all text is so small that to read it my face has to be like 18 inches away. When I adjusted the resolution to be the next sizes down (1440 x 852, and 1440 x 852 stretched), as well as all the other smaller sizes it made everything look blurry (similarly to when you use Command + Scroll to zoom in, how the text is really soft on the edges, and difficult to read). Is there a setting somewhere that I'm missing, or another resolution settings area that I can use. I feel like this 2800 dollar notebook may be only good for movie watching otherwise.     I'm trying to find some sort of physical product that would either go on the top or the side of an lcd monitor and give me space to tape/push-pin/post it note things for myself. In my head I am picturing an extra space above your monitor 6 inches tall that lets you tape/push pin things up in front of you. For random notes and things I want to keep track of, having them on the top/side of my monitor would keep the space on my desk itself clear, and they would be closer to my field of vision. Does something like this exist? Do I need to rig up something myself?   • CS3, Illustrator - Where Do X/Y Coordinates Measure from?

    I have a project where there are several PDF files. I'm using Illustrator to make these. It seems the point/line of origin is inconsistent from image to image (file to file). Where is the point of origin, by default, in CS3 Illustrator? It would be nice if, while I was positioning images, I could just say, "OK, x coordinate is 5.5 inches in this document, so it is 5.5 in that one." But it seems this is not the case. Anyone know how Illustrator sets these parameters?

  • Compaq Q2009 monitor display Issues

    I have this compaq q2009 monitor 20' inches and I am having display issues. When I turn on the computer the image is displayed fine for a fraction of a second and then the display goes black. If I turn off the monitor and turn it on again the the same thing happens: the image is displayed for a fraction of a second and then goes black. This is odd. I've looked all over the web and I haven't found anything useful (not even in the HP website). So there is no "out of range" or "recommended resolution" message. It just displays and then goes black. I think the resolution is fine because it was working OK until recently and I haven't changed anything in that regard. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

  • What is the largest flatscreen monitor available for PC use?

    I'll qualify this specifically (by order of preference): must have the highest diagonal measurement, widescreen or "normal" aspect ratio doesn't matter here, just the diagonal. must have the highest resolution available, which means 72 inches of 1280x1024 won't cut it. must not have a TV tuner built into it, I'm not looking for a TV set, this is a monitor! must be available at a retail outlet that caters to the general public, i.e. Best Buy, Sears, Costco (all of these examples are in the U.S., although you can suggest something from whatever chain is in your area/nation/geography). Non-retail or non-physical venues like eBay, or businesses that only cater to other businesses, do not qualify under this requirement. I should be able to walk into this place and purchase it, not just whip up an order online. If you are unsure about this requirement, just ask yourself: can I physically see it before I open my wallet and purchase it?
