  • Which memory related Tomcat JVM startup parameters are worth tuning?

    - by knorv
I'm trying to understand the fine art of tuning Tomcat memory settings. In this quest I have the following three questions: Which memory related JVM startup parameters are worth setting when running Tomcat? Why? What are useful rule-of-thumbs when fine-tuning the memory settings for a Tomcat installation? How do you monitor the memory consumption of your live Tomcat installation?

  • JVM process resident set size "equals" max heap size, not current heap size

    - by Volune
After a few reading about jvm memory (here, here, here, others I forgot...), I am expecting the resident set size of my java process to be roughly equal to the current heap space capacity. That's not what the numbers are saying, it seems to be roughly equal to the max heap space capacity: Resident set size: # echo 0 $(cat /proc/1/smaps | grep Rss | awk '{print $2}' | sed 's#^#+#') | bc 11507912 # ps -C java -O rss | gawk '{ count ++; sum += $2 }; END {count --; print "Number of processes =",count; print "Memory usage per process =",sum/1024/count, "MB"; print "Total memory usage =", sum/1024, "MB" ;};' Number of processes = 1 Memory usage per process = 11237.8 MB Total memory usage = 11237.8 MB Java heap # jmap -heap 1 Attaching to process ID 1, please wait... Are my expectations wrong? What should I expect? I need the heap space to be able to grow during spikes (to avoid very slow Full GC), but I would like to have the resident set size as low as possible the rest of the time, to benefit the other processes running on the server. Is there a better way to achieve that? • Java native methods issues with SUN JVM (jdk1.5.0_14) and multi-core CPU’s

    - by Mattias Arnersten
We are hosting an application on SUN JVM that handles a lot of XML parsing using Jaxb. The application is parsing the XML fine using JRockit 5 but when using the SUN JVM the JVM spends a majority of it’s time on native methods such as java-lang.System.arraycopy, java.lang.String.intern and java.lang.ClassLoader.getPackage. The CPU load is approx. 60% higher when using SUN JVM compared with JRockit. Even stranger is that when we only run the application server using one core (in WMWare) the problem disappears. Has anyone experienced the same behavior? Mattias Arnersten

  • JVM memory initializazion error after windows update

    - by Pier Luigi
Hi all, I have three Windows Server 2003 with 2 GB RAM. Server1 tomcat 5.5.25 jvm version SUN 1.6.0_11-b03 Server2 tomcat 5.5.25 jvm version SUN 1.6.0_14-b08 Server3 tomcat 6.0.18 jvm version SUN 1.6.0_14-b08 For the three servers JVM parameters are: -XX:MaxPermSize=256m -Dcatalina.base=C:\Apache Group\apache-tomcat-5.5.25 -Dcatalina.home=C:\Apache Group\apache-tomcat-5.5.25 -Djava.endorsed.dirs=C:\Apache Group\apache-tomcat-5.5.25\common\endorsed -Djava.io.tmpdir=C:\Apache Group\apache-tomcat-5.5.25\temp vfprintf -Xms512m -Xmx1024m For some months everithing worked fine. Last friday we installed some windows updates. After the reboot tomcat doesn't start anymore, with error: Error occurred during initialization of VM Could not reserve enough space for object heap We reduced the parameter -Xmx1024m to -Xmx768m and now tomcat starts. But we need greater max heap size What happened to our servers ? Thanks in advance.

  • JVM version manager

    - by luacassus
Is there Ruby Version Manager (http://rvm.beginrescueend.com) equivalent for the Java world? I'm looking for tool which allow me to easily download and install a new JVMs and switch between them. For example: jvm install <version> jvm list - will list installed JVMs on my system jvm use jdk1.6 - will switch my env to jdk 1.6 version, etc.

  • Implementing C# for the JVM

    - by Rob
Is anyone attempting to implement C# for the JVM? As a Java developer, I've been eyeing C# with envy, but am unwilling to give up the portability and maturity of the JVM, not to mention the diverse range of tools for it. I know there are some important differences between the JVM and CLR but is there anything that is a showstopper?

  • Does it mean JVM Suspended?

    - by Joe.wang
When my application run . I got a message says : Ping: Timed out waiting for signal from JVM. The JVM was launched with debug options so this may be because the JVM is currently suspended by a debugger. Any future timeouts during this JVM invocation will be silently ignored. What does that mean? It seems it will block any web request from outside? because when I upload a file to it, it failed. help me .

  • Understanding java's native threads and the jvm

    - by Moev4
I understand that the jvm is itself an application that turns the bytecode of the java executable into native machine code, but when using native threads I have some questions that I just cannot seem to answer. Does every thread create their own instance of the jvm to handle their particular execution? If not then does the jvm have to have some way to schedule which thread it will handle next, if so wouldn't this render the multi-threaded nature of java useless since only one thread can be ran at a time?

  • JNI 'problmatic frame' causes JVM to crash

    - by HJED
Hi I'm using JNI to access the exiv2 library (written in C++) in Java and I'm getting a weird runtime error in the JNI code. I've tried using various -Xms and -Xmx options, but that seems to have no affect. I've also tried running this code on JDK1.7.0 with the same result. # A fatal error has been detected by the Java Runtime Environment: # # SIGSEGV (0xb) at pc=0x00007ff31807757f, pid=4041, tid=140682078746368 # # JRE version: 6.0_20-b20 # Java VM: OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (19.0-b09 mixed mode linux-amd64 ) # Derivative: IcedTea6 1.9.2 # Distribution: Ubuntu 10.10, package 6b20-1.9.2-0ubuntu2 # Problematic frame: # V [libjvm.so+0x42757f] # # If you would like to submit a bug report, please include # instructions how to reproduce the bug and visit: # https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openjdk-6/ # --------------- T H R E A D --------------- Current thread (0x000000000190d000): JavaThread "main" [_thread_in_Java, id=4043, stack(0x00007ff319447000,0x00007ff319548000)] siginfo:si_signo=SIGSEGV: si_errno=0, si_code=1 (SEGV_MAPERR), si_addr=0x0000000000000024 Registers: ... • Can the JVM recover from an OutOfMemoryError without a restart

    - by askullhead
Can the JVM recover from an OutOfMemoryError without a restart if it gets a chance to run the GC before more object allocation requests come in? Do the various JVM implementations differ in this aspect? EDIT: My question was about the JVM recovering and not the user program trying to recover by catching the error. In other words if an OOME is thrown in an application server (jboss/websphere/..) do I have to restart it? Or can I let it run if further requests seem to work without a problem. Sorry if that wan't clear.

  • Weblogic, JVM and EAR...

    - by Sebastien Lorber
Hello, I'm planning to do a heap dump with jmap jdk1.5 tool on a production weblogic (10) instance. Actually there are 3 EAR (perhaps more, don't really know i don't have access) deployed on this weblogic instance. Someone told me "weblogic creates a JVM for each EAR" Can someone confirm this? With jmap i need the jvm pid as parameter to do the heap dump... Since i have 3 EAR i guess i have 3 pid so i wonder how to know which pid correspond to which EAR JVM?

  • Slow Crash with Filter Manager

    - by Alex N.
I have been having sporadic freezes on my machine lately. There is no blue screen or crash screen. All the applications just stop responding and ~5~10 minutes later it will power off. After checking the event log a couple times, I have found that the same event occurs right before each crash. File System Filter 'Avgmfx64' (6.1, ?2011?-?12?-?23T08:08:12.000000000Z) has successfully loaded and registered with Filter Manager. My question is twofold: I can not seem to find any information on what the Filter Manager actually is supposed to do. for curiosities sake, what is it? And more importantly, how do I fix this problem. From the research I have done, I see that similar problems can be caused by out of date drivers, so I have already taken the time to update all of my drivers, run MemTest, and verify the drive integrity.

  • loading wrong jvm.dll

    - by Brittany
When I run an executable I created, it uses the jvm.dll from C:\Windows\System32. But I want it to use the jvm.dll in C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_17\jre\bin\server. C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_17\jre\bin\server is in my PATH environment variable. Does anyone know how to accomplish this? Thanks.

  • Start with Java (JVM) ecosystem

    - by Kaveh Shahbazian
I have came from another question to this one: How can one start with Java (JVM) ecosystem? What are beginner, intermediate and advanced knowledge-bases (bags!)? To be honest Java ecosystem was always a bit confusing to me, so it would be very helpful to provide some "reference references" and "defacto tutorials" for learning (curve!) JVM. I am a C# developer (WPF, Windows Forms, ASP.NET, Web Services, ... like that).

  • How does JVM handles dynamic allocation

    - by Nile
I want to understand how JVM manages heap for the dynamic allocations. Since every java program is invoked as a thread, when does JVM's garbage collector come into play. Also, how things work for javascript's dynamic allocation ?

  • Java 1.4 Class performance on 1.5 JVM

    - by user222164
Switching from JVM 1.4 to 1.5 has performance benefits as per release notes. http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/docs/relnotes/features.html#performance We have Java 1.4 compiled classes which are run on 1.5 JVM, will these classes suffer in performance because they were compiled using 1.4 ?

  • JVM with no garbage collection

    - by HH
I've read in many threads that it is impossible to turn off garbage collection on Sun's JVM. However, for the purpose of our research project we need this feature. Can anybody recommend a JVM implementation which does not have garbage collection or which allows turning it off? Thank you.

  • JVM memory management & garbage collection book?

    - by Max
Hi. Could anyone advice a book (or any other source) that would thoroughly reveal internals of JVM memory management & garbage collection (optimization, work, circular references, pecularities, discussions for various JVM impls...)? [What I've found so far are separate articles devoted to various aspects but no weighty tome :). Some good materials for Hotspot implementation are here. ] Thanks a lot for any advice you give.

  • Is there any evidence that one of the current alternate JVM languages might catch on?

    - by FarmBoy
There's been a lot of enthusiasm about JRuby, Jython, Groovy, and now Scala and Clojure as the language to be the successor to Java on the JVM. But currently only Groovy and Scala are in the TIOBE top 100, and none are in the top 50. Is there any reason to think that any of this bunch will ever gain significant adoption? My question is not primarily about TIOBE, but about any evidence that you might see that could indicate that one of these languages could get significant backing that goes beyond the enthusiasts.

  • Crash generated during destruction of hash_map

    - by Alien01
I am using hash_map in application as typedef hash_map<DWORD,CComPtr<IInterfaceXX>> MapDword2Interface; In main application I am using static instance of this map static MapDword2Interface m_mapDword2Interface; I have got one crash dump from one of the client machines which point to the crash in clearing this map I opened that crash dump and here is assembly during debugging > call std::list<std::pair<unsigned long const ,ATL::CComPtr<IInterfaceXX> >,std::allocator<std::pair<unsigned long const ,ATL::CComPtr<IInterfaceXX> > > >::clear > mov eax, dword ptr [CMainApp::m_mapDword2Interface+8 (49XXXXX)] Here is code where crash dump is pointing. Below code is from stl:list file void clear() { // erase all #if _HAS_ITERATOR_DEBUGGING this->_Orphan_ptr(*this, 0); #endif /* _HAS_ITERATOR_DEBUGGING */ _Nodeptr _Pnext; _Nodeptr _Pnode = _Nextnode(_Myhead); _Nextnode(_Myhead) = _Myhead; _Prevnode(_Myhead) = _Myhead; _Mysize = 0; for (; _Pnode != _Myhead; _Pnode = _Pnext) { // delete an element _Pnext = _Nextnode(_Pnode); this->_Alnod.destroy(_Pnode); this->_Alnod.deallocate(_Pnode, 1); } } Crash is pointing to the this->_Alnod.destroy(_Pnode); statement in above code. I am not able to guess it, what could be reason. Any ideas??? How can I make sure, even is there is something wrong with the map , it should not crash?

  • what can be causes of http server crash?

    - by mithunmo
Hello , I am using WAMP server on Windows XP. Apache 2.2.11 MySQL 5.1.36 (INNODB engine) PHP 5.3.0 I observe that my WAMP server crashes in the following scenarios IF I use a Low end PC ( low processor speed and low RAM) After making some changes to httpd.conf file .For eg changing the Allow from IP address . But here it crashes only once and then it starts to work fine. Random crashes CRASH LOG szAppName : httpd.exe szAppVer : 2.2.11.0 szModName : php5ts.dll szModVer : 5.3.0.0 offset : 0000c309 C:\DOCUME~1\blrcom\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERc677.dir00\httpd.exe.mdmp C:\DOCUME~1\blrcom\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERc677.dir00\appcompat.txt My questions Does high CPU utilization/LOW RAM can also cause the HTTP server to crash ? excessive file reading as in every 10 seconds ? unlimited script execution time . I have set the maximum execution time in php script to 0 as my script has to execute for sometimes 2-3 days. Is there any way to avoid this ? Access to Database ? Should we use lock before reading and writing Can these be the reasons for random wamp server crashes ? OR is is some other programming error ? Please guide me . Regards, Mithun

  • Why does my computer crash randomly?

    - by Donavon Decker
The other day I went out to my van to get my Tower and when I opened the trunk it fell out. I brought it into the house and opened it, and everything looked ok. When I started it up, about 1-3 minutes afterwards it would crash. It did this over and over until I reseated the cooler. Everything seemed normal again, until after about 10 minutes of gameplay (any game), it would crash. I reseated my GPU + reinstalled the drivers, however I still get the same error. A while back, I'd check my 'Windows Rating' periodically, and all of them were in the '6.0-6.9' range except for my hard disk usage (always been like that [not relative]). Today I went in and looked, and my Processor and Memory was rated 5.4. I reseated my cpu and my memory, refreshed the windows rating, and then my processor and memory went from 5.4, to 5.1. A few minutes ago I reseated them once again, and now it's back to 5.4. Note: Not sure if this is relevant to the issue, but I updated my bios earlier today I honestly have no idea what the issue is, but I'm getting aggravated at the problem. Here are some images which contain images of my specifications: i1271.photobucket.com/albums/jj623/donxdeck/1_zps09f0607c.jpg i1271.photobucket.com/albums/jj623/donxdeck/4_zps381cd00a.jpg i1271.photobucket.com/albums/jj623/donxdeck/3_zps54bba720.jpg i1271.photobucket.com/albums/jj623/donxdeck/2_zps945d3d72.jpg Thanks for the help
