  • After 10 Years, MySQL Still the Right Choice for ScienceLogic's "Best Network Monitoring System on the Planet"

    ScienceLogic has a pretty fantastic network monitoring appliance.  So good in fact that InfoWorld gave it their "2013 Best Network Monitoring System on the Planet" award.  Inside their "ultraflexible, ultrascalable, carrier-grade" enterprise appliance, ScienceLogic relies on MySQL and has since their start in 2003.  Check out some of the things they've been able to do with MySQL and their reasons for continuing to use MySQL in these highlights from our new MySQL ScienceLogic case study. Science Logic's larger customers use their appliance to monitor and manage  20,000+ devices, each of which generates a steady stream of data and a workload that is 85% write. On a large system, the MySQL database: Averages 8,000 queries every second or about 1 billion queries a day Can reach 175,000 tables and up to 20 million rows in a single table Is 2 terabytes on average and up to 6 terabytes "We told our customers they could add more and more devices. With MySQL, we haven't had any problems. When our customers have problems, we get calls. Not getting calls is a huge benefit." Matt Luebke, ScienceLogic Chief Software Architect.? ScienceLogic was approached by a number of Big Data / NoSQL vendors, but decided against using a NoSQL-only solution. Said Matt, "There are times when you really need SQL. NoSQL can't show me the top 10 users of CPU, or show me the bottom ten consumer of hard disk. That's why we weren't interested in changing and why we are very interested in MySQL 5.6. It's great that it can do relational and key-value using memcached." The ScienceLogic team is very cautious about putting only very stable technology into their product, and according to Matt, MySQL has been very stable: "We've been using MySQL for 10 years and we have never had any reliability problems. Ever." ScienceLogic now uses SSDs for their write-intensive appliance and that change alone has helped them achieve a 5x performance increase.   • Kinect office demo ideas

    I'm thinking of placing a Kinect (connected to a PC) in the office and have something fun on it. Just a small thing people can interact with. Basically I get a depthmap (image) and a color image from the Kinect which I can analyze and do stuff with. My limited imagination came up with: Count people passing by. Measure average width of people passing by. Some ball with physics people can play with. Audible alert when someone is walking too fast. Anyone have any good ideas? :)

  • Moving Windows 7 profile to new user

    I have a laptop which I've been using as part of a corporate network with an AD login (and associated local profile). The laptop is loaded with Windows 7 Ultimate. I need to remove the laptop from this domain and, to start this process, I have already configured a local user on the box for me to use moving forward (granting this user the same local admin rights as the AD user). I'd like to migrate all the files, settings, etc from the local AD profile to the new non-AD profile. Is there a simple way to do this? Anything built into Win 7? As far as basic files I can probably just manually copy all the documents, pictures, music, desktop, favorites, etc... But is there a more streamlined way to move profile information? -Kevin

  • Fix YAML syntax highlighting in VIM

    The YAML syntax highlighting in Vim 7.3 isn't great. Putting an apostrophe in a line of text triggers quote highlighting even when there's no quote. The same thing happens in other files sometimes too. I've posted a screenshot below. Is there any way to fix this behavior, or is there a different YAML syntax file I can use that won't trigger this behavior? This occurs in both MacVim and Vim in the Terminal. I'm running v7.3.   • Upgrading php, mysql, and apache

    I have been looking around and have not found a good answer to my question. I currently have php 5.3.3 installed via yum on my centos 6.3 server. I need to upgrade to php 5.10 or later. It is my understanding that you need to find the correct mysql and apache packages that fit with the php install. Can someone please point me in the direction of a an update guide? Btw I am not looking for "yum update httpd php5" this gets me the old 5.3.3 version. Thanks, Kevin.

However most videos on youtube just show the tilt feature that is somehow inverted and forget to include the calibration. I want the user to calibrate their device to whatever position they're in.     Hello, I'm wondering how, in JCAPS 6, we can create new eWays. By eWay, I mean the components like the existing HL7, JMS, File, eMails (ie, external applications) ... I am not sure about the exact name of these entites, "API oriented OTD", JBI, JCA. Basically, I would like to create an object that: - is part of the Connectivity Map - has properties (which can be overwritten in Glassfish) - can cooperate dynamically with my Collaborations (JCDs) Does anyone know how to create such objects?   • GIT Exclude Specific Files when Pushing to Specific Repository

    Is it possible to exclude specific files (*.ai, *.psd) when pushing to certain repositories with GIT? My need comes from trying to use GIT for both version control and deployment to Heroku. If I include my graphic assets in the deploy, they slug size is larger than desired. However, I do need to include all project files in my main github repository. Thanks, Kevin

The user also needs to be able to remove the data from the document. So far, I've managed to remove the document property and variable, but I'm not sure how I would go about removing the field (that's already inserted into the document). Please advise.
