• How do I edit my resolv.conf file?

  I have the problem that my ubuntu machine uses the wrong dns server. For some reason he queries localhost for dns records. I have added the dns server in the network settings gui, but /etc/resolv.conf still contains 127.0.0.1 as dns server. Now I tought I could just edit the file by myself, but it explicitly says I should not edit the file by hand. Now, since the network settings GUI didn't generate the file with the right settings, how do I generate a new resolv.conf file by myself?

• Edit menu permission issue

  i'm an Lubuntu user, but i suppose it concerns everyone. For menu editing there are 3 GUIs: lxmed, menulibre, alacarte. great! Still the ISSUE is that if i start as administrator, for example: gram@gram-pc:~$ alacarte will edit menu, till the time i close app. it doesn't have permission for that... so nothing in menu has been changed... gram@gram-pc:~$ gksudo alacarte or root@gram-pc:/# alacarte will open completely different menu with completely different items... how can i grand permission to edit my-not-root-menu?

• Crop, Edit, and Print Photos in Windows 7 Media Center

  Windows Media Center is a nice application for managing and displaying your personal photos, but you may occasionally need to make some basic edits to your pictures. Today we’ll take a look at how to crop, edit, and print photos right from Windows 7 Media Center. From within the Picture Library in Windows Media Center, choose a photo to work with, right-click and select Picture Details. You can also access this option with a Media Center remote by clicking the “i” button. Note: You’ll notice you have the option to rotate the picture from this menu. It is also available on the next screen.  Rotate a picture Now you’ll see more options on the Picture Details screen. From here you can rotate, Print, or Touch Up, Delete, or Burn a CD/DVD. To rotate the picture, simple select Rotate. Note: If you want your photo saved with the new orientation, you’ll need to select Save from the Touch Up screen that we will look at later in the article.   Each click will rotate the picture 90 degrees clockwise. You’ll see the new orientation of the picture displayed on the Picture Details screen after you have clicked Rotate. Print a picture From the Picture Details screen, select Print. Click Print again. Media Center automatically prints to your default printer, so make sure your desired target printer is set as default. Crop and Edit Photos To edit or crop your photo, select Touch Up. Touch Up options includes, Crop, Contrast, and Red Eye removal. First, we’ll select the Crop button to crop our photo.   You will see a cropping area overlay appear on your photo. Select one of the buttons below to adjust the location, size, and orientation of the area to be cropped. When you’re happy with your selection, click Save. You’ll be prompted to confirm your save. Click Yes to permanently save your edits. You can also apply Contrast or Red Eye adjustments to your photos. There aren’t any advanced settings for these options. You merely toggle the Contrast or Red Eye on or off by selecting the option. Be sure to click Save before exiting to if you’ve made any changes you wish to permanently apply to the photos. This includes rotating the images. While this method is not likely to be replace your favorite image editing software, it does give you the ability to make basic edits and print photos directly from Windows Media Center. With a Media Center remote, you can even do all your edits from the comfort of your recliner. • How to edit files directly on webdav in windows.

  I have a webDAV setup with the cPanel webdisk. I can connect to it through NetHood and I can drag and drop files to/from there. What I can't do is simply edit any of the files directly. I need to copy it somewhere else, edit it, then copy it back. That's essentially what is needed with ftp, though smart clients will monitor the file, making it easier than webDAV in the current state I'm using it in. I was under the impression that webdav was supposed to let me work on the files as if it were a local drive. But nothing can actually open the files. How can I go about bringing more functionality around to it? Or is this as good as it gets? I have tried 'net use q:\ https://myserver.com:2083' and 'net use q:\ '\myserver.com@SSL:2083\' but neither work and only throws: "System error 67 has occurred. The network name cannot be found." I ultimately want to use TortiseSVN with the webDAV so I can have my working copy running on the server.

• Edit Media Center TV Recordings with Windows Live Movie Maker

  Have you ever wanted to take a TV program you’ve recorded in Media Center and remove the commercials or save clips of favorite scenes? Today we’ll take a look at editing WTV and DVR-MS files with Windows Live Movie Maker. Download and Install Windows Live Movie Maker. The download link can be found at the end of the article. WLMM is part of Windows Live Essentials, but you can choose to install only the applications you want. You’ll also want to be sure to uncheck any unwanted settings like settings Bing as default search provider or MSN as your browser home page.   Add your recorded TV file to WLMM by clicking the Add videos and photos button, or by dragging and dropping it onto the storyboard.   You’ll see your video displayed in the Preview window on the left and on the storyboard. Adjust the Zoom Time Scale slider at the lower right to change the level of detail displayed on the storyboard. You may want to start zoomed out and zoom in for more detailed edits.   Removing Commercials or Unwanted Sections Note: Changes and edits made in Windows Live Movie Maker do not change or effect the original video file. To accomplish this, we will makes cuts, or “splits,” and the beginning and end of the section we want to remove, and then we will delete that section from our project. Click and drag the slider bar along the the storyboard to scroll through the video. When you get to the end of a row in on the storyboard, drag the slider down to the beginning of the next row. We’ve found it easiest and most accurate to get close to the end of the commercial break and then use the Play button and the Previous Frame and Next Frame buttons underneath the Preview window to fine tune your cut point. When you find the right place to make your first cut, click the split button on the Edit tab on the ribbon. You will see your video “split” into two sections. Now, repeat the process of scrolling through the storyboard to find the end of the section you wish to cut. When you are at the proper point, click the Split button again.   Now we’ll delete that section by selecting it and pressing the Delete key, selecting remove on the Home tab, or by right clicking on the section and selecting Remove.   Trim Tool This tool allows you to select a portion of the video to keep while trimming away the rest.   Click and drag the sliders in the preview windows to select the area you want to keep. The area outside the sliders will be trimmed away. The area inside is the section that is kept in the movie. You can also adjust the Start and End points manually on the ribbon.   Delete any additional clips you don’t want in the final output. You can also accomplish this by using the Set start point and Set end point buttons. Clicking Set start point will eliminate everything before the start point. Set end point will eliminate everything after the end point. And you’re left with only the clip you want to keep.   Output your Video Select the icon at the top left, then select Save movie. All of these settings will output your movie as a WMV file, but file size and quality will vary by setting. The Burn to DVD option also outputs a WMV file, but then opens Windows DVD Maker and prompts you to create and burn a DVD.   Conclusion WLMM is one of the few applications that can edit WTV files, and it’s the only one we’re aware of that’s free. We should note only WTV and DVR-MS files will appear in the Recorded TV library in Media Center, so if you want to view your WMV output file in WMC you’ll need to add it to the Video or Movie library. • tring to edit brightness

  i'm tring to edit the /sys/class/backlight/max_brightness file to stop ubuntu 12 returning to maximum brightness on each reboot. gedit won't save the file after i have modified it i have used chown to change ownership to me which was successful. I then changed gedits settings so it won't save a backup but it still won't save. It returns with this error, Could not save the file /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/max_brightness. Unexpected error: Error writing to file: Input/output error is this yet another bug?

• Edit the Windows Live Writer Custom Dictionary

  Windows Live Writer is a great tool for writing and publishing posts to your blog, but its spell check unfortunately doesn’t include many common tech words.  Here’s how you can easily edit your custom dictionary and add your favorite words. Customize Live Writer’s Dictionary Adding an individual word to the Windows Live Writer dictionary works as you would expect.  Right-click on a word and select Add to dictionary. And changing the default spell check settings is easy too.  In the menu, click Tools, then Options, and select the Spelling tab in this dialog.  Here you can choose your dictionary language and turn on/off real-time spell checking and other settings. But there’s no obvious way to edit your custom dictionary.  Editing the custom dictionary directly is nice if you accidently add a misspelled word to your dictionary and want to remove it, or if you want to add a lot of words to the dictionary at once. Live Writer actually stores your custom dictionary entries in a plain text file located in your appdata folder.  It is saved as User.dic in the C:\Users\user_name\AppData\Roaming\Windows Live Writer\Dictionaries folder.  The easiest way to open the custom dictionary is to enter the following in the Run box or the address bar of an Explorer window: %appdata%\Windows Live Writer\Dictionaries\User.dic   This will open the User.dic file in your default text editor.  Add any new words to the custom dictionary on separate lines, and delete any misspelled words you accidently added to the dictionary.   Microsoft Office Word also stores its custom dictionary in a plain text file.  If you already have lots of custom words in it and want to import them into Live Writer, enter the following in the Run command or Explorer’s address bar to open Word’s custom dictionary.  Then copy the words, and past them into your Live Writer custom dictionary file. %AppData%\Microsoft\UProof\Custom.dic Don’t forget to save the changes when you’re done.  Note that the changes to the dictionary may not show up in Live Writer’s spell check until you restart the program.  If it’s currently running, save any posts you’re working on, exit, and then reopen, and all of your new words should be in the dictionary. Conclusion Whether you use Live Writer daily in your job or occasionally post an update to a personal blog, adding your own custom words to the dictionary can save you a lot of time and frustration in editing.  Plus, if you’ve accidently added a misspelled word to the dictionary, this is a great way to undo your mistake and make sure your spelling is up to par!   Hi All, I have a Telerik RadEditor on the sharepoint and iam unable to edit the webpart. How can i edit the webpart, please suggest. The “Edit” option is not visible although i have clicked on “edit page” from site actions. IMP:- the webpart uses 3 images all of which are of size 567X113 pixels.   I have captured some traffic with Wireshark and saved the result as a file. The file has 3 sections now: request headers response headers response body The response body is to become an flv file, but now everything is saved as a single file. So I need a way to delete the first two sections from the file, but the problem is that the file is very big (over a thousand mega bytes). I have tried to open it with gedit, but no matter how long I wait, gedit hangs and remains unresponsive until I kill it. What tool can I use to edit this big file easily?

• Can't edit/drag-and-drop widgets in QtCreator in Unity, Gnome3 - ok

  I have QtCreator 2.4.1 (Qt 4.7.4) installed on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS x86. When I try to change UI - drag-and-drop any widget (buttons, label, etc.) it won't let me do it, like it's read-only. The icon when I drag is a circle with a line through it. I've found that problem in Unity and it's suggested to install Gnome3 shell - Can't edit/drag-and-drop widgets in QtCreator I tried to install Gnome3 and it works fine as expected. But the question, is there any other way to work proper with QtCreator in Unity?

• Rythmbox library set to: multiple locations and no way to edit/change

  I previously set Rhythmbox to include a few different locations. Now following changes to my directory structure, I'd like to reflect these changes in Rhythmbox. But when I go to "Library Location", I see "Multiple locations Set" and I can only add to the list; no way to edit/remove. I Googled this problem and the only relevant results I get date back to 2006, probably referring to a previous version of Rhythmbox and specifying components/locations that I can't find on my system. • Ubuntu 12.04 edit grub

  I just install Ubuntu 12.04. I want to change the boot order of grub. Previous versions of grub.cfg I was able to change the permissions and the do a gedit. After reloading 12.04, I was able to change permissions for grub.cfg, but gedit will not let me save it. I am a little irritated that Ubuntu is suppose to be open source. However someone has chosen to lock one out of a file. I do realize that some people have no business doing a edit on grub. I am a long time user of Unix and Linix.

• Use a Free Tool to Edit, Delete, or Restore the Default Hosts File in Windows

  The hosts file in Windows contains mappings of IP addresses to host names, like an address book for your computer. Your PC uses IP addresses to find websites, so it needs to translate the host names into IP addresses to access websites. When you enter a host name in a browser to visit a website, that host name is looked up in DNS servers to find the IP address. If you enter IP addresses and host names for websites you visit often, these websites will load faster, because the hosts file is loaded into memory when Windows start and overrides DNS server queries, creating a shortcut to the sites. Because the hosts file is checked first, you can also use it to block websites from tracking your activities on the internet, as well as block ads, banners, third-party cookies, and other intrusive elements on webpages. Your computer has its own host address, known as its “localhost” address. The IP address for localhost is 127.0.0.1. To block sites and website elements, you can enter the host name for the unwanted site in the hosts file and associate it with the localhost address. Blocking ads and other undesirable webpage elements, can also speed up the loading of websites. You don’t have to wait for all those items to load. The default hosts file that comes with Windows does not contain any host name/IP address mappings. You can add mappings manually, such as the IP address 74.125.224.72 for www.google.com. As an example of blocking an ad server website, you can enter the following line in your hosts file to block doubleclick.net from serving you ads. • Be able to create edit and move files to and from /var/www

  I have installed lamp on Ubuntu 12.04. I try to access /var/www but it doesn't allow me to do anything as it says I don't have permissions. I have tried: 1. gksudo nautilus - which works but its very inconvenient way of doing things. 2. sudo adduser ryan www-data sudo chown -R www-data:www-data /var/www sudo chmod g+rw /var/www The above didn't work. I have googled and searched this site for a solution, but all the existing possible solutions have not worked.

• Receiving "May not have permission to edit" warning, even though I have permissions

  I'm using Panic Transmit as an FTP client connecting to an Ubuntu 12.x server. When I try to edit and upload a file using it, I receive the warning that tells me to check my permissions as I may not have permissions to edit a file. I'm not setting the permissions on upload and I do have permission to edit files. After clearing the warning and checking the file on the server, may changes go through. The files I'm trying to edit are set to 775 and are part of the www-data group which my user is part of as well. Any idea why I would be getting such a prompt? This only happens on some files, not all.
