  I want anyone in group www-data to have write access to /var/www. For example, if 'a' and 'b' are in group www-data and 'a' creates a file in /var/www - then 'b' will be able to edit it. The problem is that I create files that PHP and Apache can't edit - and they create files I can't edit without sudo. I changed the umask setting /etc/profile from umask 022 to umask 002. Is this a safe and proper way to handle this?

I'm using a Aiptek MyNote Premium tablet for writing my notes and minutes on this device, import them later and convert them to pdf automatically with a simple script using inkscape and ghostscript. Is there any command line tool to add some categories to the pdf's metadata, so i can find the pdf later (e.g. with gnome-do) by categories? Update: I tried the solution with pdftk and it works, but it seems that gnome-do doesn't take care of pdf-metadata. Is there a way to get gnome-do to do that?

  Hi, I wanted to ask if it is possible to create a user account on Ubuntu so that it had all powers and rights of root account except it would be impossible to edit a certain file. What I intend to do is to edit host file in order to block access of certain websites, and then create a user account which would be the same as root account except it would be not able to edit host file. Maybe there is an easier way to block an access of certain sites forever? Thanks!

  I typically have two needs: Scenario A. Change a single PDF page. In this case I have a PDF but not the original source file used to create the PDF. I don't want to try to recreate the document from scratch. I'd like to open the PDF and change a few things. A good example of this scenario: I was responsible for planning a big event at a campground site, I had a PDF of the site. I wanted to start with that document, highlight some parts, add some labels, remove some parts that weren't relevant. or Scenario B. Combine PDFs or extract information from a PDF This scenario usually arises because I want a single PDF deliverable that is made up of parts that are best created in different programs. In this case I have the source files for all the documents but they don't play well enough together to easily create a single PDF deliverable. For part of it, I may want to use Libre Office Writer. For another page I may want to use Gimp. Still another page I may use Libre Office Calc. I could use Writer as the master document and embed images or the Calc object into that, but for ultimate control, you can't beat separate PDF documents that are then combined. What are the best tools / processes for editing PDFs in Ubuntu?

  There is this tutorial in imagemagick http://www.imagemagick.org/Usage/masking/#masks I was wondering if there was some way to mimic the behavior (like cutting the image up based on a black image mask that turns image parts transparent... ) and then trim that image in game... trying to hack around with the webcam feature and reproduce some of the imagemagick opencv stuff in it in Unity but I am saddly unequipped with masks, shaders etc in unity skill/knowledge. Not even sure where to start.

• Why can I not edit, delete directories inside of this directory

  Hello there, First, I thought this was PHP related, but maybe it isn't. My original post, which may be irrelevant now is located at the bottom. The problem is I have a directory : /articles/. In it are 10 sub directories. I have been changing the permissions lately, but now it seems all the permissions of the parent folder, sub-folders and files are either chmod 755 or 777. I cannot move, delete or edit files inside of this parent directory or sub-directories with my FTP-client. I can however edit, delete, create new files and directories and change them with PHP-functions without problems. What may the problem be? OLD POST. Ignore everything below this line: If I create a directory with mkdir(), or create a file with fopen(), file_put_contents() or SimpleXMLElement::asXML(), I am unable to access the file with my FTP-client or c-Panel File Manager. If I try to delete or edit them, I get errors. Dreamweaver suggests it is a permission problem or a network or filesystem fault (but I've set the permissions with chmod() to 0777, and when I check the cPanel, it confirms chmod 777. I also tried to use fileowner() and the function returns int(99), the same owner as those files that I could access with my FTP-client. It seems files and directories created with PHP can only be modified or be deleted with PHP. I thought this must be a server setup related issue, so I write it here. I am on a shared server, and I have no idea about setting up servers. EDIT: It seems the problem is different. I cannot move files with FTP-client to the parent, or sub-directories either. This problem may not be PHP related, then. It seems the problem applies to any directory, regardless of whether it was created by PHP. EDIT 2: The parent directory has chmod 755.   I have a list of items, being displayed in a series of DIVs. When someone clicks on an "edit" link, I want to replace the div with a form that will let them edit the contents of that item in a nice way. I'm trying to think of the ideal way to handle this. Do I create a hidden edit form for every item in the list, and hook the edit link to reveal it, like this: <div> <a href="#">edit</a> Item One <div id="edit_1202" class="editform">Edit form goes here</div> </div> <div> <a href="#">edit</a> Item Two <div id="edit_2318" class="editform">Edit form goes here</div> </div> Or is there a better way to fetch the data and insert the form's HTML into the right spot?   Hi, Need to edit some of the local text files on my iphone but so far all the apps I have downloaded do not navigate the OS3 file tree for me to load and edit them. I need to do this on my iphone as I can no longer access via ssh or with the iphone cable. One of the files to edit is a ssh config file which is what is not allowing ssh connections.   Has anyone been able to successfully edit the Standard calendar in 2010? I'm trying to change the working times as none of our admin accounts seem able to do it. We're running Project Server 2010 RTM on SharePoint 2010 RTM with Project Pro 2010. When I click the Edit Calendar button in PWA it triggers Project client to open up but it just opens up an empty project and I've not access to edit the Standard calendar using any of the published steps. It would be great to hear if someone has managed to do this so I can work out if it's a general glitch in this build or is it just a problem with out setup.

  I use Cyberduck as my go to FTP client on Windows. I have but one complaint, and that is whenever I click the edit button to edit the remote file with a local version of gVim, it opens in a new window/instance of Vim. This leads to a cluttered desktop as well as not allowing the AutoComplPop to work at it's full potential. What I would like to be able to do is automatically open every file in a new buffer inside of an existing gVim buffer instead of a new window, kind of like the Windows version of gVim and how it has the option to edit a file in a new buffer. Is there anyway to do this in Cyberduck/gVim setting?

• All terminal commands (like ls, cd, edit, open) are returning errors on my Mac

  From what I can tell from reading other questions/answers is that my .bash_profile file may be corrupt. If I type echo $PATH in terminal the result is: /usr/local/git/bin From what I've read, that's not what the result is supposed to be. But I also can't get any of the commands (like edit or subl, for Sublime Text 2) to open the .bash_profile file to edit it. I was able to open the file in TextEdit using "cmd-shift-.", and here's what's in the file: [[ -s "$HOME/.rvm/scripts/rvm" ]] && source "$HOME/.rvm/scripts/rvm" PATH=$PATH:~/bin export PATH export PATH=/usr/local/git/bin But the file is LOCKED, so I can't edit it there either. I'm very new to programming and in the middle of trying to install everything on my Mac to go through a Ruby on Rails tutorial. I can't even check my version of ruby, since even ruby -v returns -bash: ruby: command not found Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

  Let's say I have table in database. I'd like to be able to view all data from this table and be able to edit every field from single screen. I tried to do this in phpmyadmin but I'm not sure how... I can see all data but I have to click edit on single field and then I'm sent to next screen, can't really edit everything at once. How do I do this in phpmyadmin or other mysql gui? I have found that UEFI has something called "Boot Graphics Resource Table" and that it overides the default logo if there is a image present (source) How can I edit the logo stored in UEFI firmware or Boot Graphics Resource Table? if it's in the "bootres.dll", which does UEFI use? My disk (spread across a few system/usefi/windows/etc partitions) has around twenty bootres.dlls. The bootres.dll is signed by Microsoft, but I don't have to worry because I can sign the file I edit myself with my own certificate.
