  • Faster, secure, protocol/code required for long-distance transfer.

    - by Chopper3
I've ran into a problem and I'm looking for a new secure protocol/client/server that's faster over a 1Gb/s fibre link - let me tell you the story... I have a pair of redundant, diversely-routed, 1Gb/s links over a distance of around 250 miles or so (not dark fibre but a dedicated point to point link, not a mesh). At the 'client' end I have a HP DL380 G5 (2 x dual-core 2.66Ghz Xeon's, 4GB, Windows 2003EE 32-bit), at the 'server' end I have a HP BL460c G6 (2 x quad-core 2.53Ghz Xeons, 48GB, Oracle Linux 5.3 64-bit). I need to transfer around 500 x 2GB files per week from the client to the server machines per week - but the transfer NEEDS to be secure. Using both iPerf or regular FTP I can get ~80MB/s of transfer pretty consistently, which is great. Using WinSCP or Windows SFTP I can't seem to get more that ~3-4MB/s, at this point the server's CPU is 3% busy while CPU0 of the client goes to ~30% utilised. We've tried editing various TCP window sizes with little success. Both ends are connected to quite low-usage Cisco Cat6509's with Sup720's. I can replace the client machine with a newer machine and/or move it to Linux - but this will take time. Clearly these single-threaded secure Windows clients are introducing too much latency doing their encryption. So a few questions/thoughts; Are there any higher performing secure protocols or client software for Windows that I could try? I'm pretty protocol-gnostic so long as it'll work between Windows and Linux. Should I be using hardware to do the encryption, either in the client or the network parts? If so what would you recommend? I'm not convinced that just swapping the server would be that much faster, the CPU was only at 30% but then again that's higher than I'd have expected given the load - moving to Linux at the client end may be a better idea but would be quite disruptive. Am I missing a trick? Thanks in advance.

  • College Courses through distance learning

    - by Matt
I realize this isn't really a programming question, but didn't really know where to post this in the stackexchange and because I am a computer science major i thought id ask here. This is pretty unique to the programmer community since my degree is about 95% programming. I have 1 semester left, but i work full time. I would like to finish up in December, but to make things easier i like to take online classes whenever I can. So, my question is does anyone know of any colleges that offer distance learning courses for computer science? I have been searching around and found a few potential classes, but not sure yet. I would like to gather some classes and see what i can get approval for. Class I need: Only need one C SC 437 Geometric Algorithms C SC 445 Algorithms C SC 473 Automata Only need one C SC 452 Operating Systems C SC 453 Compilers/Systems Software While i only need of each of the above courses i still need to take two more electives. These also have to be upper 400 level classes. So i can take multiple in each category. Some other classes I can take are: CSC 447 - Green Computing CSC 425 - Computer Networking CSC 460 - Database Design CSC 466 - Computer Security I hoping to take one or two of these courses over the summer. If not, then online over the regular semester would be ok too. Any help in helping find these classes would be awesome. Maybe you went to a college that offered distance learning. Some of these classes may be considered to be graduate courses too. Descriptions are listed below if you need. Thanks! Descriptions Computer Security This is an introductory course covering the fundamentals of computer security. In particular, the course will cover basic concepts of computer security such as threat models and security policies, and will show how these concepts apply to specific areas such as communication security, software security, operating systems security, network security, web security, and hardware-based security. Computer Networking Theory and practice of computer networks, emphasizing the principles underlying the design of network software and the role of the communications system in distributed computing. Topics include routing, flow and congestion control, end-to-end protocols, and multicast. Database Design Functions of a database system. Data modeling and logical database design. Query languages and query optimization. Efficient data storage and access. Database access through standalone and web applications. • Finding distance travelled by robot using Optical Flow

    - by user280454
Hi, I'm working on a project right now in which we are developing an autonomous robot. I have to basically find out the distance travelled by the robot between any 2 intervals. I'm using OpenCV, and using the Optical Flow functions of OpenCV, I'm able to find out the velocity/distance of each pixel in 2 different images. Using this information, I want to be able to find out the distance travelled by the robot in the interval between those 2 images. I thought of a way in which we could develop an input output mapping between the distance travelled by pixels and the distance travelled by the bot (using some tests). In this way, using neural networks, we would be able to find the relationship. However, the optical flow would depend on the distance of the camera from the pixel, which would cause problems. Is there any way to solve this problem?

  • Unity3D 3.5 pro - Moving the camera vs setting draw distance

    - by stoicfury
I move the camera mostly via right-click + WASD, sometimes with [shift] if I want it to move faster. Occasionally, instead of moving my camera, it alters the draw distance / FOV / some visual aspect of the editing scene that causes trees and other object to disappear when I scroll enough, and eventually even the terrain starts disappearing. It is not m "zooming out". My camera does not move, the width and height of the FOV stays the same (one might say the depth is being altered though). What key am I hitting to cause this to happen, and is it possible to disable it? side note: "keybinds" is probably the most spot-on tag for this question but it doesn't exist (surprisingly) and I lack the rep to create it.

    I've seen all the examples and here's what I got so far. my table is simple: schools (table name) - School_ID - lat - long - county - extrainfo here's my code: <?php $con = mysql_connect("xxx","xxx","xxx"); if (!$con) { die('Could not connect: ' . mysql_error()); } else {} mysql_select_db("xxx", $con); $latitude = "36.265541"; $longitude = "-119.207153"; $distance = "1"; //miles $qry = "SELECT *, (3958.75 * ACOS(SIN(" . $latitude .   • Reflections based on distance from plane

    - by Andrea Benedetti
Let's consider, for example, a surface like the volleyball court, we can see that legs and shoes of the players are reflected, with a blur effect, but body and stadium don't (as each object not near to the court). I've already made a reflection effect, but it works as a specular reflection, and I need to achieve an effect like the photo above. So, I would like to make a reflection that is based on the distance between the object and the plane, in this manner a close object would reflect more than an object that is positioned far away from the plane. What is the best way to achieve this effect? My first idea was to use the depth value (taken from the reflected camera), and use that value to blend between reflection and court. But I don't know if it's a correct way. Edit: as rendering engine I use Ogre that already provides a reflections system: reflecting the camera through a plane (obviously I can select the models to draw from the reflected camera). After a render to texture pass I can blend the reflected texture with the original plane. So, if possible, I'm looking for a way that best suits my system.

  • WouldISurviveANuke Assesses Your Distance From Nuclear War Strike Sites

    - by Jason Fitzpatrick
WouldISurviveANuke is a morbid Google Maps mashup that plots out the effective radius of nuclear weapons on major metropolitan areas, your distance from them, and your chances of survival. Visit the site, plug in your zipcode, and set the parameters (how big of a nuclear weapon and how large the nearest target city needs to be) to find out if you’re in the blast radius. We plugged in a downtown address in Detroit, MI. The verdict? Neither we nor the cockroaches will be coming out alive. If you plug in a location far enough away from the direct blast radius you’ll also get a quality of life report that spells out the effects of a local nuclear strike. As far as startling anti-nuclear proliferation arguments go, WouldISurviveANuke is an effective and interactive demonstration. Hit up the link below to try it out. WouldISurviveANuke [via Y! • Calc direction vector based on destination vector and distance from enemy in AS3

    - by Phil
I'm working on a zombie game in AS3 where I want a character to be able to move away from a zombie depending upon how close the zombie is. The character also has a destination that it's trying to get too on the screen. Ok so I have 2 vectors, one pointing to my destination, and one pointing to the zombie which I then invert to get my "away" vector. I then turn the distance between my character and the zombie into a value between 0 and 1. And then I'm stuck on how to get a resultant vector for my character. How would I use my 0-1 value to calculate how much of the away vector is used and how much of the original destination vector is still left if that makes sense? to end up with 1 direction vector to move my character? So if the zombie is right where my character is, then my direction vector = away vector, and if I'm far away from the zombie than my direction vector = destination vector, but how do I calculate the in-between? Ideally need the answer in AS3.

  • What is the maximum distance from an anchor point to a bezier curve?

    - by drawnonward
Given a cubic bezier curve P0,P1,P2,P3 with the following properties: • Both P1 and P2 are on the same side of the line formed by P0 and P3. • P2 can be projected onto the line segment formed by P0 and P3 but P1 cannot. What is the T value for the point on the curve farthest from P3? Here is an image with an example curve. The curve bulges on the left, so there is a point on the curve farther from P3 than P0. I found this reference for finding the minimum distance from an arbitrary point to a curve. Is trial and error the only way to solve for maximum distance as well? Does it make any difference that the point is an anchor on the curve? Thanks

  • Implementation of a distance matrix of a binary tree that is given in the adjacency-list representation

    - by Denise Giubilei
Given this problem I need an O(n²) implementation of this algorithm: "Let v be an arbitrary leaf in a binary tree T, and w be the only vertex connected to v. If we remove v, we are left with a smaller tree T'. The distance between v and any vertex u in T' is 1 plus the distance between w and u." This is a problem and solution of a Manber's exercise (Exercise 5.12 from U. Manber, Algorithms: A Creative Approach, Addison-Wesley (1989).). The thing is that I can't deal properly with the adjacency-list representation so that the implementation of this algorithm results in a real O(n²) complexity. Any ideas of how the implementation should be? Thanks.

  • Given the lat/lon of 2 close points on earth (<10m), How do I calculate the distance in metres?

    - by Rory
I have the lat/lon of 2 points on the earth. They are really close together, <10m. Let's assume the earth is flat. How do I calculate the distance between them in metres? I know about tools (PostGIS, etc.) that can do this correctly, however I'm just doing a rough and ready type, and I'm OK with low accuracy. At such small sizes a difference of 1% is only 10cm, which is fine for me. I'm doing this in stock python. I'm OK with a standard Euclidean distance thing.

  • How to add markers on Google Maps polylines based on distance along the line?

    - by mikl
I am trying to create a Google Map where the user can plot the route he walked/ran/bicycled and see how long he ran. The GPolyline class with it’s getLength() method is very helpful in this regard (at least for Google Maps API V2), but I wanted to add markers based on distance, for example a marker for 1 km, 5 km, 10 km, etc., but it seems that there is no obvious way to find a point on a polyline based on how far along the line it is. Any suggestions?

  • Routing protocols, distance vector vs link state

    - by Artem Barger
I'm trying to figure out the differences(pros/cons) between two routing protocols approach and I would be great-full for any help, advice and explanation. As far I can say that it seems like distance vector is more static and more local based routing, since it doesn't know the network state whereas link state is more aware of current states therefore it seems more natural to use it over distance-vector, but I have a feeling like I'm missing something. And I would be glad to here about more aspects and different issues I have to consider while choosing one of them.

  • Android Game Development problem with Speed = Distance / Time

    - by Charlton Santana
I have been coding speed for an object. I have made it so the object will move from one end of the screen to another at a speed depending on the screen size, at the monemt I have made it so it will take one second to pass the screen. So i have worked out the speed in code but when I go to assign the speed it tells me to force close and i do not understand why. Here is the code: MainGame Code: @Override protected void onDraw(Canvas canvas) { setBlockSpeed(getWidth()); } private int blockSpeed; private void setBlockSpeed(int screenWidth){ Log.d(TAG, "screenWidth " + screenWidth); blockSpeed = screenWidth / 100; // 100 is the FPS.. i want it to take 1 second to pass the screen Math.round(blockSpeed); // to make it a whole number block.speed = blockSpeed; // this is line 318!! if i put eg block.speed = 8; it still tells me to force close } Block.java Code: public int speed; public void draw(Canvas canvas) { canvas.drawBitmap(bitmap, x - (bitmap.getWidth() / 2), y - (bitmap.getHeight() / 2), null); if(dontmove == 0){ this.x -= speed; // if it was eg this.x -= 18; it would not have an error } } The exception 06-08 13:22:34.315: E/AndroidRuntime(2801): FATAL EXCEPTION: Thread-11 06-08 13:22:34.315: E/AndroidRuntime(2801): java.lang.NullPointerException 06-08 13:22:34.315: E/AndroidRuntime(2801): at com.charltonsantana.game.MainGame.setBlockSpeed(MainGame.java:318) 06-08 13:22:34.315: E/AndroidRuntime(2801): at com.charltonsantana.game.MainGame.onDraw(MainGame.java:351) 06-08 13:22:34.315: E/AndroidRuntime(2801): at com.charltonsantana.game.MainThread.run(MainThread.java:64)

  • OpenGL, objects disappear at a certain z distance

    - by smoth190
I'm writing a managed OpenGL library in C++, and I'm having a pretty annoying problem. Whenever I set an objects position to -2.0 or lower, the object disappears. And at distances 0 through -1.9, it doesn't appear to move away from them camera. I have a world matrix (which is multiplied by the objects position to move it), a view matrix (which is just the identity matrix currently) and a projection matrix, which is setup like this: FOV: 45.0f Aspect Ratio: 1 zNear: 0.1f zFar: 100.0f using GLMs glm::perspective method. The order the matrices are multiplied by in the shader is world, view, projection, then position. I can move the object along the X and Y axis perfectly fine. I have depth testing enabled, using GL_LEQUAL. I can change the actually vertices positions to anything I want, and they move away from the camera or towards it perfectly fine. It just seems to be the world matrix acting up. I'm using glm::mat4 for the world matrix, and glm::vec3 for positions. Whats going on here? I'm also using OpenGL 3.1, GLSL version 140 (1.4?).

  • Distance Between GIS Points

    - by Paul
I have a large number of GIS (latitude, longitude) coordinates, and I'd like to get the distance between them. Is there a service that will calculate the shortest path for me? I know about google maps, but I'd like something I can use from Python, and that can handle a large batch of requests at once. I'm looking for the driving distance, so a straight distance won't do. Thanks

  • Fastest distance lookup given latitude/longitude?

    - by Ryan Detzel
    I currently have just under a million locations in a mysql database all with longitude and latitude information. With this I use another lat/lng to find the distance of certain places in the database but it's not as fast as I want it to be especially with 100+ hits a second. Is there a faster formula or possibly a faster system other than mysql for this? The formula I'm using is this. select name, ( 3959 * acos( cos( radians(42.290763) ) * cos( radians( locations.lat ) ) * cos( radians( locations.lng ) - radians(-71.35368) ) + sin( radians(42.290763) ) * sin( radians( locations.lat ) ) ) ) AS distance from locations where active = 1 HAVING distance < 10 ORDER BY distance;

  • How can we calculate sea distances using waypoints ?

    - by Ashish Ranpara
Hi Friends, I have one query in which I really stuck at that. I have port database with waypoints and also routing points which I need to use in distance calculation between two ports. I have done lots of R&D to find formula which gives me distance between two points. I also need shortest route which is possible. I have reviewed online tools which allow user to calculate the distance. But I want to do the same at my own. I have reviewed Port World Distance Calculator. I reviewed the Great Circle formula to achieve that but I don't know that how we avoid landscapes in sea distance and in which direction I need to find distance for second port.

  • Compute average distance from point to line segment and line segment to line segment

    - by Fred
Hi everyone, I'm searching for an algorithm to calculate the average distance between a point and a line segment in 3D. So given two points A(x1, y1, z1) and B(x2, y2, z2) that represent line segment AB, and a third point C(x3, y3, z3), what is the average distance between each point on AB to point C? I'm also interested in the average distance between two line segments. So given segment AB and CD, what is the average distance from each point on AB to the closest point on CD? I haven't had any luck with the web searches I've tried, so any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

  • Calculating driving distance in iPhone

    - by Prasanna
Hi, I need to find the driving distance between 2 locations. I do not need to display the directions in a map, just need to calculate the distance, which I need to use in my application. Does MapKit allow this? Is there an alternative that can be used? I am able to get forward geo-coding using CloudMade, but there doesn't seem to be an option to obtain driving distance. Appreciate any help.

  • Distance between hyperplanes

    - by michael dillard
I'm trying to teach myself some machine learning, and have been using the MNIST database (http://yann.lecun.com/exdb/mnist/) do so. The author of that site wrote a paper in '98 on all different kinds of handwriting recognition techniques, available at http://yann.lecun.com/exdb/publis/pdf/lecun-98.pdf. The 10th method mentioned is a "Tangent Distance Classifier". The idea being that if you place each image in a (NxM)-dimensional vector space, you can compute the distance between two images as the distance between the hyperplanes formed by each where the hyperplane is given by taking the point, and rotating the image, rescaling the image, translating the image, etc. I can't figure out enough to fill in the missing details. I understand that most of these are indeed linear operators, so how does one use that fact to then create the hyperplane? And once we have a hyperplane, how do we take its distance with other hyperplanes?
