  • Is there a IRC Client which can use or emulate mIRC scripts

    I've used mIRC (Windows) for years, and have some custom scripts, written in mIRC's own scripting language. Is there an Ubuntu/Linux IRC Client which will allow me to use my scripts as-is? Failing that, is there a "functions a lot like mIRC" Client available? I've just tried Pidgin's IRC client, but it seems to be quite basic. I couldn't see any way for it to tap into channel activity via scripts. I don't want to use Wine... WineHQ reports it as having too many bugs for my liking, and anyhow, I try to avoid using Wine like I do Windows :)

  • Should extension scripts be run in a sandbox?

    In particular, this is about game extensions written in lua (luajit-2.0). I was contemplating whether I should restrict what these scripts can do, and arrived at the conclusion that I probably shouldn't: It's hard to get right. Sounds silly, but chances are my sandbox is gonna end up leaky anyways. The only benefit I could think of would be giving users some sense of security when running third party scripts. The disadvantages would be that it's just incredibly annoying for extension writers. That is, for now, myself (game content will be mostly scripted). The reason I'm asking this now before I actually have anything presentable is that adding a sandbox early on is easy, but would impose said annoying restrictions on myself too. However if I first go on with it and then later decide I do need a sandbox after all, I'm gonna run into problems (I'd either have to rewrite the scripts that are already there, or introduce some form of trust management system which seems to be more trouble than it's worth).

  • Can't run init script on boot after another init script

    I have three init scripts and the Broker init script runs fine, but when I try to run the Consumer init script and then the Data Collector init script, the only process that is running is the Broker. I added the symbolic links to the run levels using update-rc.d for each script and I also changed the number prefixes in the symbolic links to try and run the scripts in the proper order but that did not work. I am able to run the scripts from the terminal and they work fine but they need to all be started on boot. Any ideas as to why my other scripts are not running? Also inside my Consumer and Data Collector I am running: su user1 -c 'java -jar foo.jar' to start the services. Also the Consumer Java class sits and waits for a message from the queue, so the Java code does not stop until I specify the stop argument for the init script. The Broker has to start first, then the Consumer, then the Data Collector. Adding the symbolic links for the runlevels: sudo update-rc.d Broker defaults 10 90 sudo update-rc.d Consumer defaults 15 85 sudo update-rc.d DataCollector defaults 20 80

    I'm looking for some ideas on how to disconnect, logoff, or reset a user's session in a 2008 Terminal Server (unable to login as the user either as it is completely locked-up). This is a production environment, so rebooting the server or doing something system-wide is out of the question for now. Any Powershell tricks to help us with this? We've tried killing the session's processes too, directly from the same terminal server (from the task manager, Terminal Services Manager and the Resource Monitor) with no results. Help!

  • Force logoff of idle users on Windows 7 workstation with fast user switching enabled

    We have mission-critical Windows 7 workstations on our network that must be available to any user at any time, even when it has been locked by a prior user. Thus, we have fast user switching enabled. Unfortunately, it's not unusual for us to have a dozen or more different users logged onto the same machine at the same time, with a corresponding degradation in service. We've done our best at educating the masses to log off at the end of their shift. But users being users, this does not happen on a consistent basis. Does anyone know of a clean way to force logoff idle users after a certain amount of time has elapsed? I am open to any method that could be deployed/configured via script, GPO, or SCCM.

  • User script at logout

    The problem: I'm sharing a directory with my wife. I've placed us both in a 'shared' group and the directory belongs to the 'shared' group as well. Whenever one of us creates a file, this file belongs to user:user, instead of user:shared... The solution: I can do sudo chown, but my wife can't. So, I want to run a script when I logout of the session. If I understand correctly, the startup scripts go in /etc/init.d/ and the runlevel scripts go /etc/rc0.d/ where 0 is the runlevel (0-6). Do the runlevel scripts execute only on exit/logout? Do these depend on the user, that is, I'd like to run it only for my user (not so important in this case, mind)? Should I place the script somewhere else? Also, I imagine that the script will be run by root, so there's no need for sudo within the script, is that correct?

  • What is a good scripting language for FTP downloading

    I need to develop some scripts for downloading files from a remote server to our file system. We need to grab files that have various timestamps, and place them into appropriate folders on our system. I'm probably opening quite the can of worms here, but which scripting language would be the best for getting this done? Right now I am using C Shell, which is working fine, but it is requiring multiple scripts because of the use of the ftp command. I wanted to know if there is a better option before I go too far into this project. There are no security concerns within the scripts as far as FTP accounts (public access FTP)

  • SharePoint Saturday DC 2010 Slides, Demo Scripts, and Pictures

    Wow! This past weekend I attended SharePoint Saturday Washington DC (SPSDC) which was quite an event to say the least.  For those unfamiliar, SharePoint Saturday is a community driven event where various speakers gather to present at a FREE conference on all topics related to SharePoint.  This made my fifth SharePoint Saturday attended and fourth I’ve spoken at.  SPSDC was a bit different than most SharePoint Saturdays mostly due to the scale of it.  We had almost 950 attendees, over 80 speakers presenting close to 90 sessions, and dozens of sponsors.  A big thanks goes out to the organizers of this event.  They put in a lot of hard work and time to pull this event off and should be very proud of the end result.      For SPSDC I presented “The Power of PowerShell + SharePoint 2007”.  I want to thank all of the attendees of my session for coming and asking some great questions.  Below you can find the slides and demo scripts for this session.  I also took some photos throughout the day (not as many as usual since so much going on) so check them out.  If you have any follow up questions feel free to drop me a line in the comments or the contact link at the top of the site.   Slides and Scripts Click here for the demo scripts and slides posted on my SkyDrive.   • Need to run a .sh as root on boot or login

    Still new with linux and running ubuntu 12.10 I have a wireless stick (ae2500) which has known issues that has been partially solved using ndiswrapper. However, to use it I must run the same scripts every time I reboot, effectively uninstalling and reinstalling the driver. I made a .sh file to run every time to make it easy, but I must do the sudo login everytime. There are three solutions I am looking for and although not all are necessary to solve this particular problem, I would still like to know them all for learning purposes. run scripts or file.sh on boot (as well as other programs) run scripts or file.sh automatically with root privileges make the install permanent so as not to have to go through the process every time. Any additional information that can help me regarding this that I did not think to ask (including streamlining my commands), or general knowledge, would be greatly appreciated. Following are the contents of the file. I pretty much just made it as I would have entered it. cd ~/ndiswrapper-1.58rc1 sudo modprobe -rf ndiswrapper sudo rm /etc/modprobe.d/ndiswrapper.conf sudo rm -r /etc/ndiswrapper/* sudo depmod -a sudo make uninstall sudo make sudo make install sudo ndiswrapper -i bcmwlhigh5.inf ndiswrapper -l sudo modprobe ndiswrapper

  • SQL Server Scripts I Use

    When I get to a new client I usually find myself using the same set of scripts for maintenance and troubleshooting.  These are all drop in solutions for various maintenance issues. Reindexing.  I use Michelle Ufford’s (SQLFool) re-indexing script.  I like that it has a throttle and only re-indexes when needed.  She also has a variety of other interesting scripts on her blog too. Server Activity.  Adam Machanic is up to version 10 of sp_WhoIsActive.  It’s a great replacement for the sp_who* stored procedures and does so much more.  If a server is acting funny this is one of the first tools I use. Backups.  Tara Kizer has a great little T-SQL script for SQL Server backups.  Wait Stats.  Paul Randal has a great script to display wait stats.  The biggest benefit for me is that his script filters out at least three dozen wait stats that I just don’t care about (for example LAZYWRITER_SLEEP). Update Statistics.  I didn’t find anything I liked so I wrote a simple script to update stats myself.  The big need for me was that it had to run inside a time window and update the oldest statistics first.  Is there a better one? Diagnostic Queries.  Glenn Berry has a huge collection of DMV queries available.  He also just highlighted five of them including two I really like dealing with unused indexes and suggested indexes. Single Use Query Plans.  Kim Tripp has a script that counts the number of single-use query plans.  This should guide you in whether to enable the Optimize for Adhoc Workloads option in SQL Server 2008. Granting Permissions to Developers.  This is one of those scripts I didn’t even know I needed until I needed it.  Kendra Little wrote it to grant a login read-only permission to all the databases.  It also grants view server state and a few other handy permissions.   What else do you use?  What should I add to my list?

  • Ensuring ethernet is configured before continuing init scripts.

    Is there a better way to ensure that an ethernet port is configured before continuing through startup init scripts? When 802.3ad bonded ethernet is configured on Ubuntu, it takes some time before it finishes protocol negotiation and starts passing packets, because the networking script just configures, but does not verify that traffic is being passed. As a result, this can throw off some of the other network dependent scripts, like the init for drbd. Right now, I just have a loop that pings the gateway in a startup script, but this seems less than optimal: GATEWAYIP=10.0.0.1 while ( ! ping -c 1 $GATEWAYIP ); do echo gateway not up done

  • Why is 50.22.53.71 hitting my localhost node.js in an attempt to find a php setup

    I just created a new app using angular-fullstack yeoman generator, edited it a bit to my liking, and ran it with grunt on my localhost, and immediately upon starting up I get this flood of requests to paths that I haven't even defined. Is this a hacking attempt? And if so, how does the hacker (human or bot) immediately know where my server is and when it came online? Note that I haven't made anything online, it's just a localhost setup and I'm merely connected to the internet. (Although my router does allow 80 port incoming.) Whois shows that the IP address belongs to a SoftLayer Technologies. Never heard of it. Yesterday I had also posted quick question here: SQL SERVER – T-SQL Scripts to Find Maximum between Two Numbers Run following code: SELECT SUM(data) FROM (SELECT NULL AS DATA) t It will throw following error. Msg 8117, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 Operand data type void type is invalid for sum operator. I can easily fix if I use ISNULL Function as displayed following. SELECT SUM(data) FROM (SELECT ISNULL(NULL,0) AS DATA) t Above script will not throw an error. However, there is one more method how this can be fixed. Can you come up with another method which will not generate error?
