• Remotely sync Time Machine drives

  I have an Xserve that runs Time Machine to a local terabyte drive. I also connected my external terabyte drive for a time period and had Time Machine use it to establish the seed data. I plan to take my drive back home with me (out of state) and have the Xserve return to using its local drive for Time Machine. But when I get back home, is there a way to keep my external drive's copy of the Time Machine Backups folder in sync with the Backups folder back on the Xserve? I'm wanting a full copy of the history (makes an awesome remote backup). I've thought of using the unix command rsync. In fact, that's how I had been doing it but I was looking the compactness that Time Machine was able to achieve. Thanks.

• Can UML with OCL be used for formal specifications?

  I am asking because UML is used for informal specifications and has some ambiguities in its semantics. However OCL can be used to specify pre/post conditions and invariants and other constraints quite efficiently I think. I encountered the Z notation and algebraic specifications recently. My question, is combination of UML and OCL sufficient for formal specifications?

• Will Dolphin emulator run (smoothly) on this machine?

  Product Specs: Intel® NM10 Express chipset /w Intel® Atom® D525 (dual-core, 1.8 GHz) I think the most I can put in there for RAM is 4 GB. (They don't make 8 GB SODIMM do they?) The Dolphin site is pretty vague about requirements: Windows XP or higher, or Linux, or MacOSX Intel Fast CPU with SSE2. GPU with Pixel Shader 2.0 or greater. Some integrated graphics chips work but it depends on the model (and only with DirectX 9). I'm trying to make a light-weight quiet little machine for streaming video and playing eumulators, and I'm trying to figure out the minimum requirements I will need to do what I want. I know I'm not supposed to ask for product recommendations here, so if you could just advise the minimum requirements in terms of CPU, graphics card, and RAM, that'd be helpful.

  At the moment I am restricted to a laptop with 512MB of RAM, a 120GB HDD and a 1.5GHz Intel processor for all my development and general browsing needs, and as you can probably tell using it for anything modern is a painful experience. As a result I've decided to buy myself a new desktop computer, one that will stand the test of time and one that can be upgraded easily. Rather than build the machine myself I've decided to go through Dell as I've had good experiences with them when purchasing computers for my family. Finally, should I ever need to improve it I'd like to be able to add more RAM and change some of the parts. I wouldn't have thought this would be a problem but a few people I've spoken to have said that the amount of RAM the motherboard can handle isn't that great. Is this true? • Can't log in after restoring from Time Machine

  My friend uses a Macbook Pro with Snow Leopard 10.6.2. She uses both FileVault and Time Machine to preserve her data. Recently, she suffered a hard disk failure. After restoring from Time Machine using the Snow Leopard install disk, she gets the following error when logging in: You are unable to log in to the FileVault user account at this time. Logging into the account failed because an error occurred. When examining the file system through Terminal, I noticed her home directory is not present: there is no /Users/username directory, or the FileVault .sparsebundle file that's supposed to be there. When using Time Machine.app on /Users, it appears as if her home directory as never there. Additionally, I did a search on the backup disk with the following command: sudo find /Volumes/backup -name '*.sparsebundle' No results. She told me that after working with some large data files, Time Machine would come on, and it would sound like it was transferring a lot of data to the hard disk. Time Machine must have been doing something, right? How can we recover her files? Are they still there?

  We use Apple's Time Machine to back up our workstations at the office. If I want to restore a file, I need to open up the Time Machine GUI and browse files there. The GUI is ugly eye-candy and gets in my way. Is there a way to browse the Time Machine archive using the Mac's command-line? I'm used to Netapps and other storage appliances. I use backintime for my Ubuntu workstation. To restore a file with one of those systems, you can restore a file with a simple command like: cp .snapshot/daily.0/filename.txt . or cp /backup/backintime/20100611-000002/backup/etc/shadow /etc/shadow Is there an equivalent for Apple's Time Machine?

  I am planning to assemble a custom NAS machine using an Intel Atom processor. I need the NAS for the following purposes: It should be accessible from by Windows PC so that I can dump data on the NAS (installations, media etc) It should be accessible from my Macbook for the above use. I should be able to use it with the Mac time machine software for backup. The media should be available to my PS3 for streaming. I should be able to access it from my iphone. All the above features should be available over wireless. The time machine feature is very important. Is this even possible?   I have a virtual machine that is running IE 9 and windows 7 Latest Updates that I want to use to test my intranet site (ASP.Net Application). I can't add the virtual machine to the domain and I don't want to have to type my ad cruds everytime I load the site up. Is there a way for the IE on the virtualbox to Authenticate as my AD Cruds on the host machine so I don't have to always put my username and password in ? I guess I can just have IE on the virtual machine remember my username and password but other than that is there another way to do this ?

• Error during Time Machine backups on OS X Lion

  After I turn on my machine, the first couple of Time Machine backups seem to go OK, but after about an hour I get this error: Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while creating the backup folder. Latest successful backup: 7/31/11 at 12:32 PM I'm running 10.7. Time Machine is backing up an internal HD to an external USB HD. I've already run Disk Utility to repair the Time Machine partition. It's a relatively new hard drive and didn't have any issues.   We have a web application project wich will be created using ASP.NET 4.0, Entity Framework, and SQL Sever 2008 R2. To meet the needs, suppose a normal page of this application that has a query which it takes 10 miliseconds to response on a Core2 Quad @ 2.8GHz proccessor with 2x2GB of DDR3 Ram (EntityFramework overheads are considered). And we will have about 2000 concurrent user at peek times. So, what is the best recommended specifications (CPU/RAM/RAID/...) for the server which will be host this application? -- Or -- How can I calculate that?

  We have several users in the field with MacBooks. Because they're not always on the network, they save files locally to their notebooks. Normally I back things up by making quick copies to other media, but with the Macs they have the option to run Time Machine (and the way OS X is designed, they're heavily encouraged to use it.) Question; for maintaining Macs and data, how reliable and thorough is Time Machine for backup/restoration? Does it just back up the user's home directory, or can it restore the Mac if, for example, the drive fails? And are there options for "securing" the data like corporate backup software for Windows does, to encrypt the data on the time machine drive?

  I have virtualized laptops before, when someone gets a new one and doesn't want to quite let go of their old laptop for fear of losing something. This was using VMWare Workstation 7.X. In 8.0 when I go to "Convert a Physical Machine to a Virtual Machine", it asks for an IP address and doesn't give the option to virtualize the machine it's running on. How to I get VMWare to virtualize it's current system? I tried typing in Localhost, and 127.0.0.1 but that didn't do it.

  I am running Ubuntu 9.10 and I want to install turnkey linux's LAMP server on my machine to test out my code. I installed Turnkey LAMP via VirtualBox and it seems to be working because I can access the http://localhost. My question is: How do I manipulate files via VirtualBox? For example, if I had installed LAMP on my machine (not on a virtual machine), I could easily add/edit/delete files in the var/WWW folder. • Partition External Harddrive already using Time Machine?

  I have a 1TB external that I've used to backup my Mac for the past year using Time Machine. Unfortunately, my hard drive is getting close to full, and I'd like to move some of the stuff off of my Mac onto the same external drive. The problem is that the external drive is already full with my Time Machine Backups. I'd like to partition 750GB to the Time Machine Backups, and save the other 250GB for personal use. Is there any way I can go about this without corrupting my current backups? I'm willing to delete some of the older backups if necessary; again I'm just worried about corrupting the data.
