  • Searchengine bots and meta refresh for disabled Javascript

    Hi! I have a website that must have javascript turned on so it can work there is a < noscript tag that have a meta to redirect the user to a page that alerts him about the disabled javascript... I am wondering, is this a bad thing for search engine crawlers? Because I send an e-mail to myself when someone doesn't have js so I can analyze if its necessary to rebuild the website for these people, but its 100% js activated and the only ones that doesn't have JS are searchengines crawlers... I guess google, yahoo etc doesn't take the meta refresh seriously when inside a < noscript ? Should I do something to check if they are bots and do not redirect them with meta? Thanks, Joe

    Hello, When choosing software or hardware I often Wikipedia's comparision pages like the page on Comparison of project management software. However, criteria on including items on such lists are sometimes unclear (f.e. project has to be "notable", has to have a Wikipedia page), and the number of compared features are limited. Also, Wikipedia's software doesn't make it easy to edit such lists. I am looking for an external webapp/website that would do the task of comparing different solutions in the world of software, hardware, maybe even electronics, in this kind of social way. Is there any kind of such service? It should allow users to add new entries, add new features to compare and discuss items in a collaborative way. It should be also easy to browse already entered items, filter by features. (this might be a good idea for a startup ;-))

  • Working with data and meta data that are separated on different servers

    While developing a product, I've come across a situation where my group wants to store meta data for data entry forms (questions, layout, etc) in a different database then the database where the collected data is stored. This is mostly for security because we want to be able to have our meta data public facing, while keeping collected data as secure as possible. I was thinking about writing a web service that provides the meta information that the data collection program could access. The only issue I see with this approach is the front end is going to have to match the meta data with the collected data, which would be more efficient as a join on the back end. Currently, this system is slated to run on .NET and MSSQL. I haven't played around with .NET libraries running in SQL, but I'm considering trying to create logic that would pull from the web service, convert the meta data into a table that SQL can join on, and return the combined data and meta data that way. Is this solution the wrong way to approach the problem? Is there a pattern or "industry standard" way of bringing together two datasets that don't live in the same database?

By taking control of the head tag and inserting your own HtmlMeta you can easily customise these tags.Might have noticed that when you create a new master page in visual studio your <head> tag gets decorated with a runat="server" attribute.Asp.net doesn't add this kind of decoration to any other html tags (although you are free to add it if you want). So what makes the head tag special?By adding the runat="server" you're giving actually converting the control into a HtmlHead control.   • SQL Server compare table entries for update

    I have a trade table with several million rows. Each row represents the version of a trade. If I'm given a possibly new trade I compare it to the latest version in the trade table. If it has changed I add a new version, otherwise I do nothing. In order to compare the 2 trades I read the version from the trade table into my application. This doesn't work well when I'm given 10s of thousands of possibly new trades. Even batching reads to read in a 1000 trades at once and compare them the whole process can take several minutes. All the time is spent in the DB. I'm trying to find a way to compare the possibly new trades to the ones in the trade table without so much I/O. What I've come up with so far is adding a hash column to each row in the trade table. The hash is of all the trade fields. Then when I'm given possibly new trades I compute their hash, put the values into a temporary table, then find ones that are different. This feels very hacky. Is there a better way of doing it?     I have a number of files in my site which are not intended for independent viewing, but rather to be AJAXed into content within the site. They obviously don't meet HTML standards (no body, head, etc.) as independent entities. I would like to prevent search engines from indexing these pages, but do not have access to /robots.txt (which would be much more ideal). My question is, could I include the following at the top of these partial HTML files and get the desired results? <meta name="robots" content="noindex, noarchive"> I guess there are two parts to this question. Will this cause any rendering issues in any browsers? Will search engines (at least Google & Bing) interpret this as intended?

I see it's stored in the meta field as s:3:"age";s:2:"25"; ...which is age = 25 I put the information there using $usermeta['age'] = $_POST['signup_age']; in a plugin subscribing the the bp_signup_usermeta filter. I need to get it back during a function subscribing to bp_before_activate_content. How can I do this? Whats the function call? (searched documentation to no avail)

I've heard yes from colleagues but nothing confirmed. Searching for an answer has given nothing (maybe because you cant?) Anybody knows?
