  • Server 2003, XP Clients, DNS issues

    - by ron
Hello, Im having DNS issues on my network. My DC is my DNS server 10.76.4.11 and recently I configured a forwarder to 10.4.36.10. My workstations are not working because they cannot resolve the domain controller name because of DNS. an ipconfig /all reveals that they know the IP of the DNS server is 10.76.4.11, but if I nslookup 10.76.4.11 it forwards the request to 10.4.36.10 and goes nowhere. I have since removed the forwarder, but still any nslookup requests on workstations are going to 10.4.36.10. If I nslookup 10.76.4.11 on the server it can resolve its name, but for some reason when it receives the same request from workstations it doesnt know what to do. All the A, CNAME records etc are correct. DHCP's DNS is set correctly, GPOs are correct (even though they cant refresh cos of this problem!), the servers network adapter has its DNS set to 10.76.4.11. Just don't know. Very confused.

  • How does Windows 7 DNS client work?

    - by Mark Allison
I am using a local DHCP and DNS server on my home network on a linux machine. It is running CentOS 6.3 with dnsmasq 2.48. It's all working fine except for local DNS lookups for Windows machines only. I have a mix of Ubuntu, CentOS and Windows machines on the network, some virtual, some physical. I have a machine called boron and the domain is called localdomain If I ping boron from any linux machine, I get [root@lithium lists]# ping -c3 boron PING boron.localdomain (10.0.0.5) 56(84) bytes of data. 64 bytes from boron.localdomain (10.0.0.5): icmp_seq=1 ttl=64 time=0.740 ms 64 bytes from boron.localdomain (10.0.0.5): icmp_seq=2 ttl=64 time=0.478 ms 64 bytes from boron.localdomain (10.0.0.5): icmp_seq=3 ttl=64 time=0.458 ms --- boron.localdomain ping statistics --- 3 packets transmitted, 3 received, 0% packet loss, time 2000ms rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 0.458/0.558/0.740/0.131 ms If I do it from my Windows 7 machine, I get: Ping request could not find host boron. Please check the name and try again. If I try ping boron.localdomain I get: Pinging boron.localdomain [67.215.65.132] with 32 bytes of data: Reply from 67.215.65.132: bytes=32 time=16ms TTL=57 Reply from 67.215.65.132: bytes=32 time=188ms TTL=57 Reply from 67.215.65.132: bytes=32 time=15ms TTL=57 Reply from 67.215.65.132: bytes=32 time=14ms TTL=57 Ping statistics for 67.215.65.132: Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss), Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds: Minimum = 14ms, Maximum = 188ms, Average = 58ms which is clearly wrong. Why is it going out to the internet? Why can't my windows machine resolve the boron hostname to a FQDN? My Windows machines and linux machines get their network config from DHCP. It would be nice to get DNS working with the DNS client on, but I might be OK without it, what do you think?

  • bind9 DNS Ubuntu names pingible on server, but not on Windows Machines?

    - by leeand00
I setup a DNS server today on Ubuntu, following this tutorial. My intent was to setup my network for dns-name resolving on the private LAN within a single zone (nothing fancy I just want name resolution). I've tested the setup on the DNS server machine itself, and I can ping all the machines listed in the configuration file. I've also configured the Windows Machines on my network, and for some reason they are incapable of pinging by names as was possible on the DNS Server itself. I've tried running nslookup on the Windows DNS clients and I receive and error mentioning the address of the DNS server. DNS forwarding works fine, I'm not having any trouble accessing the internet, the problem only lies within accessing names within the private LAN. Here are my configuration files: options { directory "/var/cache/bind"; // If there is a firewall between you and nameservers you want // to talk to, you may need to fix the firewall to allow multiple // ports to talk. See http://www.kb.cert.org/vuls/id/800113 // If your ISP provided one or more IP addresses for stable // nameservers, you probably want to use them as forwarders. // Uncomment the following block, and insert the addresses replacing // the all-0's placeholder. // forwarders { // 0.0.0.0; // }; forwarders { 8.8.8.8; 8.8.8.4; 74.242.0.12; //68.87.76.178; }; auth-nxdomain no; # conform to RFC1035 listen-on-v6 { any; }; }; /etc/bind/named.conf.options zone "leerdomain.local" { type master; file "/etc/bind/zones/leerdomain.local.db"; notify no; }; zone "2.168.192.in-addr.arpa" { type master; file "/etc/bind/zones/rev.2.168.192.in-addr.arpa"; notify no; }; /etc/bind/named.conf.local Lookup: $TTL 3D @ IN SOA ns.leerdomain.local. admin.leerdomain.local. Additionally trying to ping by name also fails on machines that are not the DNS Server. Is there something wrong with my configuration of either the nameserver or the Windows Boxes that is keeping me from accessing other machines using names?

  • Why am I having DNS problems going through Network Solutions DNS to Amazon AWS?

Network Solutions appears to have an issue with AWS hostnames. This AWS ELB has been out there for months and is resolvable from every major DNS provider but network solutions. • Change the order of DNS lookup when connected in the VPN

    - by qwerty2010
Using Windows 7 Pro here. I have my LAN network adapter with DNS server 8.8.8.8 (Google's DNS). I also have OpenVPN client to connect to my company's network. If I type "nslookup" while disconnected from the VPN, I get 8.8.8.8 (from my LAN network adapter). If I type "nslookup" while connected in the VPN, I get the DNS IP from my company's network. That makes me think that when connected to the VPN all DNS's resolution are routed first to my company's DNS. How can I change this order, and make the DNS resolution be routed to 8.8.8.8 first, when I'm connected to the VPN? Thank you

  • DNS resolution over DHCP

    - by Eric
I have a m0n0wall router a VMWare workstation running ubuntu a windows 7 workstation running the VM The ubuntu hostname is "renraku" From the windows machine I can't resolve dns automatically for this host. For example, when I ping renraku Ping request could not find host renraku. Please check the name and try again. However nslookup seems to work nslookup renraku Server: m0n0wall.local Address: 192.168.123.254 Name: renraku Address: 192.168.123.248 I don't get how to have ping to work with hostnames. The main goal behind this is to have my web server to work with hostnames instead of ip addresses EDIT : ping 192.168.123.248 works

  • Where did this incorrect cached DNS lookup come from?

    - by Stephen Jennings
Somehow, I've been having a chronic issue where my computer will get an invalid DNS lookup in its cache for either of the two Exchange servers I use from Mail.app. My workplace runs one of the Exchange servers and I run the other (they are totally unrelated, hosted by different companies, etc.). The problem manifests as a certificate domain error. When it happens, I can run nslookup mail.mydomain.com and I see the incorrect IP address (usually owned by either Apple or Akamai), but if I run nslookup mail.mydomain.com 8.8.8.8, I get the correct address. My real quest is to find out why this keeps happening, and to do that, I'd like to know which server is supplying me this bad DNS entry. Is there a way to check my DNS cache to see where this bad lookup came from?

  • Running dnsmasq as an authoritative DNS server

    - by Lord Loh.
I am trying to implement a dynamic dns service for my computers. I have pointed h.lohray.com to my EC2 instance in the NS record of lohray.com and have installed dnsmasq on that system and have made sure to unblock the firewall port. For now, I have statistically added an entry on my /etc/hosts file. 129.118.19.163 i7.h.lohray.com however, i7.h.lohray.com does not resolve correctly with nslookup or dig :-( This is the only time I could have this resolved (online nslookup) - 50.19.103.190 is the IP address of the EC2 instance where dnsmasq is running. Where could I have gone wrong?

  • make sure i've configured dns correctly

    - by user22817
Hi, On my server with Windows Server 2008, i've added a new zone with my new domain: biografica.ro. I've added a name server for it: ns.biografica.ro and the ip of the server. Also i added two A hosts for ns.biografica.ro and www.biografica.ro. I've also defined first that name server on the site where i bought the domain and pointed it to my ip. Now, i understood that i have to wait 24-48 hours for this new domain to be available online. Question: - is this a way to check on the server that i've succesfully configured it? For instance: nslookup biografica.ro or nslookup www.biografica.ro or ping www.biografica.ro do not work locally, on the server... Can you give me an advice? Thanks.

I cannot connect to the printers (it says connecting to device failed) I have tried setting up samba, winbind, kerberos, likewise open all to no avail. I have a feeling I am just setting them up wrong. My nautilus shows this when I go to Network Windows Network MASTERMAGNETS I can ping both MASTERMAGNETS.LOCAL and 192.168.0.2 after modifying my /etc/hosts james@jamesmaddison:~$ cat /etc/hosts 127.0.0.1 localhost jamesmaddison 192.168.0.2 MASTERMAGNETS.LOCAL 192.168.0.50 Sharp-Printer # The following lines are desirable for IPv6 capable hosts ::1 ip6-localhost ip6-loopback fe00::0 ip6-localnet ff00::0 ip6-mcastprefix ff02::1 ip6-allnodes ff02::2 ip6-allrouters I believe that's the correct domain (not sure if that's the correct term) as when I do nslookup MASTERMAGNETS.LOCAL I get the following: james@jamesmaddison:~$ nslookup MASTERMAGNETS.LOCAL Server: 192.168.0.2 Address: 192.168.0.2#53 Name: MASTERMAGNETS.LOCAL Address: 192.168.0.3 Name: MASTERMAGNETS.LOCAL Address: 192.168.0.2 It all worked fine before I reinstalled Ubuntu and now I just cannot get access to the server. All help is appreciated, I need to get this working or I fear I will be forced to develop in a windows environment :(

  • DNS Problems (NIGHTMARES!) with BIND and Virtualmin

    - by Nyxynyx
I have a webserver (Ubuntu 12.04 with LAMP) using Virtualmin / Webmin. Because I just moved from a Cpanel system, I am having a nightmare configuring the DNS! Using intoDNS.com, the failed reports are: Mismatched NS records WARNING: One or more of your nameservers did not return any of your NS records. DNS servers responded ERROR: One or more of your nameservers did not respond: The ones that did not respond are: 123.123.123.123 213.251.188.141x Multiple Nameservers ERROR: Looks like you have less than 2 nameservers. According to RFC2182 section 5 you must have at least 3 nameservers, and no more than 7. Having 2 nameservers is also ok by me. Missing nameservers reported by your nameserver You should already know that your NS records at your nameservers are missing, so here it is again: ns1.mydomain.com. sdns2.ovh.net. SOA record No valid SOA record came back! MX Records WWW A Record ERROR: I could not get any A records for www.mydomain.com! Step-by-Step of my Attempt In my domain registrar (Namecheap), I registered ns1.mydomain.com as a nameserver, pointing to the IP address of my web server which is running bind9. The domain is setup with DNS ns1.mydomain.com and sdns2.ovh.net. sdns2.ovh.net is a secondary DNS server (SLAVE and pointing mydomain.com to the IP address of my web server) Webserver domain: mydomain.com Webserver hostname: ns4000000.ip-123-123-123.net Webserver IP: 123.123.123.123 Under Virtualmin, I edited the default Virtual server template, BIND DNS records for new domains: ns1.mydomain.com Master DNS server hostname: ns1.mydomain.com Next I created a Virtual server using that server template. • Windows using the DNS suffix search list on all lookups, even valid FQDNs. How to stop this?

    - by RealityGone
    When doing DNS lookups (specifically using nslookup, for some reason most things are not effected) Windows XP Pro SP3 is using the DNS suffix search list for every single one. Even for fully qualified domain names. For example I lookup "www.microsoft.com" but windows actually asks for "www.microsoft.com.eondream.com" (eondream.com is my primary domain). Now I can fix the issue by removing the Primary DNS suffix, but it seems to me that the DNS suffix search list should be for short, invalid names (where dots=0 or something). I'm sure I have a misconfiguration somewhere in windows but I don't know where. I've changed every option I can think of or find. Below is the output of ipconfig /all and nslookup (with debug & db2 enabled). This is using a static IP & (internal) DNS server. C:\ipconfig /all Windows IP Configuration Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : frayedlogic Primary Dns Suffix . . . . . . . : eondream.com Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Unknown IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : No WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : No DNS Suffix Search List. . . . . . : eondream.com Ethernet adapter Wireless Network Connection: Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Dell Wireless 1390 WLAN Mini-Card Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-1B-FC-29-EB-6B Dhcp Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : No IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.13.32 Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.13.13 DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.19.19 C:\nslookup Default Server: shardik.eondream.com Address: 192.168.19.19 set debug set db2 www.microsoft.com Server: shardik.eondream.com Address: 192.168.19.19 ------------ Got answer: HEADER: opcode = QUERY, id = 2, rcode = NOERROR header flags: response, want recursion, recursion avail. questions = 1, answers = 1, authority records = 0, additional = 0 QUESTIONS: www.microsoft.com.eondream.com, type = A, class = IN ANSWERS: - www.microsoft.com.eondream.com internet address = 208.69.36.132 ttl = 0 (0 secs) ------------ Non-authoritative answer: Name: www.microsoft.com.eondream.com Address: 208.69.36.132 (Note: it resolves to that IP because I use the opendns service and that is their suggestion page or whatever you want to call it) If I am reading the nslookup output correctly then it is not a problem with my DNS server because windows is actually asking for the incorrect domain.

  • InetAddress.getLocalHost() throws UnknownHostException

    - by jhwist
Hi, I am testing our server-application (written Java) on different operating systems and thought that OpenSolaris (2008.11) would be the least troublesome due to the nice Java integration. Turns out I was wrong, as I end up with a UnknownHostException try { computerName = InetAddress.getLocalHost().getHostName(); if (computerName.indexOf(".") > -1) computerName = computerName.substring(0, computerName.indexOf(".")).toUpperCase(); } catch (UnknownHostException e) { e.printStackTrace(); } The output is: java.net.UnknownHostException: desvearth01: desvearth01 at java.net.InetAddress.getLocalHost(InetAddress.java:1353) However, nslookup desvearth01 returns the correct IP address, and nslookup localhost returns 127.0.0.1 as expected. Also, the same code works perfectly on FreeBSD. Is there anything special to OpenSolaris that I am not aware of? Any hints appreciated, thanks.

  • DNS Server Behind NAT

    - by Bryan
I've got a Bind 9 DNS server sitting behind a NAT firewall, assume the Internet facing IP is 1.2.3.4 There are no restrictions on outgoing traffic, and port 53 (TCP/UDP) is forwarded from 1.2.3.4 to the internal DNS server (10.0.0.1). There are no IP Tables rules on either the VPS or the internal Bind 9 server. From a remote Linux VPS located elsewhere on the internet, nslookup works fine # nslookup foo.example.com 1.2.3.4 Server: 1.2.3.4 Address: 1.2.3.4#53 Name: foo.example.com Addresss: 9.9.9.9 However, when using the host command on the remote VPS, I receive the following output: # host foo.example.com 1.2.3.4 ;; reply from unexpected source: 1.2.3.4#13731, expected 1.2.3.4#53 ;; reply from unexpected source: 1.2.3.4#13731, expected 1.2.3.4#53 ;; connection timed out; no servers could be reached. From the VPS, I can establish a connection (using telnet) to 1.2.3.4:53 From the internal DNS server (10.0.0.1), the host command appears to be fine: # host foo.example.com 127.0.0.1 Using domain server: Name: 127.0.0.1 Address: 127.0.0.1#53 Aliases: foo.example.com has address 9.9.9.9 Any suggestions as to why the host command on my VPS is complaining about the reply coming back from another port, and what can I do to fix this? • Setup Reverse DNS with Cpanel and WHM?

    - by m3d
I needed to set-up a reverse DNS via cpanel. I followed the steps in this tutorial but it didn't work: http://docs.cpanel.net/twiki/bin/view/11_30/WHMDocs/RdnsForBind. I use my own name servers registered with go-daddy. But I am with VPS hosting company. I did use a new serial number and exactly as the tutorial however didnt seems to be working When I check this via windows nslookup {ip-address} I still get the my hosting company name, when reversed.

  • DNS Server address configured inside Router not working

    - by Charandeep Singh
Well, I have an ISP router in which I have configured DNS Servers to use (Primary & Secondary) like Google DNS. It works just fine. But now I have setup a computer with DNS server (Simple DNS Plus). I got it working by settings my internal DNS Server IP Address in computer. i.e. 192.168.1.3 So, instead of settings my internal DNS IP Address in every computer in my network, I want to setup DNS Server into my router. So on every DHCP request, computer get DNS Server to use. So I configured it like this: Primary DNS: 192.168.1.3 Secondry DNS: (left blank) After applying and DNS Requests stop resolving. But strange part is DNS request does goes to DNS Server but maybe not returned back, because all DNS request were available in cache logs. I don't know why this is not working, let me know if you have any solution or wordaround for this. Thanks! Update 1: NSLOOKUP Result C:\Users\user>nslookup google.com DNS request timed out. timeout was 2 seconds. Server: UnKnown Address: 192.168.1.1 DNS request timed out. timeout was 2 seconds. DNS request timed out. timeout was 2 seconds. DNS request timed out. timeout was 2 seconds. DNS request timed out. timeout was 2 seconds. *** Request to UnKnown timed-out

  • DD-WRT: DNSMasq expand-hosts not working

    - by Craig Walker
I have a Linksys router running DD-WRT (Firmware: DD-WRT v24-sp2 (09/08/09) mini). I have it successfully resolving the DNS names for my DHCP-assigned systems, but only when I fully-qualify those domains. This is despite using the "expand-hosts" DNSMasq additional option, which is supposed to activate this precise function. Here's my dnsmasq.conf: interface=br0 resolv-file=/tmp/resolv.dnsmasq domain=example.com dhcp-leasefile=/tmp/dnsmasq.leases dhcp-lease-max=51 dhcp-option=lan,3,10.77.0.5 dhcp-authoritative dhcp-range=lan,10.77.0.100,10.77.0.149,255.255.0.0,1440m dhcp-host=00:1A:A0:1D:82:5A,astatichostname,10.77.1.40,infinite expand-hosts (FYI: example.com and astatichostname are placeholders for the real-deal names I use. My network uses 10.77.0.0/16; my router is on 10.77.0.5.) Results: > nslookup astatichostname 10.77.0.5 Server: 10.77.0.5 Address: 10.77.0.5#53 ** server can't find astatichostname: NXDOMAIN > nslookup astatichostname.example.com 10.77.0.5 Server: 10.77.0.5 Address: 10.77.0.5#53 Name: astatichostname.example.com Address: 10.77.1.40 Is there something else that could be tripping up expand-host in DNSMasq?
