  I am trying to insert NULL value in Sql Server if I have null value in corresponding C# String object like below : String Residence = xmlDoc.Descendants("Appointment").Single().Element("StateOfResidence") == null ? null : xmlDoc.Descendants("Appointment").Elements("StateOfResidence").Single().Value; I am using Entity framework for Database access. So if Residence is null, 'NULL' gets inserted into Database instead of NULL. How can insert NULL for null ?

I want/need to enforce referential integrity such that when an insert is made on quotedetail, the quote and customer tables are also affected. I have tried my best to set up primary/foreign keys on my tables but need some help. • SQL SERVER – A Puzzle – Fun with NULL – Fix Error 8117

  During my 8 years of career, I have been involved in many interviews. Quite often, I act as the  interview. If I am the interviewer, I ask many questions – from easy questions to difficult ones. When I am the interviewee, I frequently get an opportunity to ask the interviewer some questions back. Regardless of the my capacity in attending the interview, I always make it a point to ask the interviewer at least one question. What is NULL? It’s always fun to ask this question during interviews, because in every interview, I get a different answer. NULL is often confused with false, absence of value or infinite value. Honestly, NULL is a very interesting subject as it bases its behavior in server settings. There are a few properties of NULL that are universal, but the knowledge about these properties is not known in a universal sense. Let us run this simple puzzle. Run the following T-SQL script: SELECT SUM(data) FROM (SELECT NULL AS data) t It will return the following error: Msg 8117, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 Operand data type NULL is invalid for sum operator. Now the error makes it very clear that NULL is invalid for sum Operator. Frequently enough, I have showed this simple query to many folks whom I came across. I asked them if they could modify the subquery and return the result as NULL. Here is what I expected: Even though this is a very simple looking query, so far I’ve got the correct answer from only 10% of the people to whom I have asked this question. It was common for me to receive this kind of answer – convert the NULL to some data type. However, doing so usually returns the value as 0 or the integer they passed. SELECT SUM(data) FROM (SELECT ISNULL(NULL,0) AS data) t I usually see many people modifying the outer query to get desired NULL result, but that is not allowed in this simple puzzle. This small puzzle made me wonder how many people have a clear understanding about NULL. Well, here is the answer to my simple puzzle. Just CAST NULL AS INT and it will return the final result as NULL: SELECT SUM(data) FROM (SELECT CAST(NULL AS INT) AS data) t Now that you know the answer, don’t you think it was very simple indeed? • How can I unit test rendering output?

  I've been embracing Test-Driven Development (TDD) recently and it's had wonderful impacts on my development output and the resiliency of my codebase. I would like to extend this approach to some of the rendering work that I do in OpenGL, but I've been unable to find any good approaches to this. I'll start with a concrete example so we know what kinds of things I want to test; lets say I want to create a unit cube that rotates about some axis, and that I want to ensure that, for some number of frames, each frame is rendered correctly. How can I create an automated test case for this? Preferably, I'd even be able to write a test case before writing any code to render the cube (per usual TDD practices.) Among many other things, I'd want to make sure that the cube's size, location, and orientation are correct in each rendered frame. I may even want to make sure that the lighting equations in my shaders are correct in each frame. The only remotely useful approach to this that I've come across involves comparing rendered output to a reference output, which generally precludes TDD practice, and is very cumbersome. I could go on about other desired requirements, but I'm afraid the ones I've listed already are out of reach.

  We test our code to make it more correct (actually, less likely to be incorrect). However, the tests are also code -- they can also contain errors. And if your tests are buggy, they hardly make your code better. I can think of three possible types of errors in tests: Logical errors, when the programmer misunderstood the task at hand, and the tests do what he thought they should do, which is wrong; Errors in the underlying testing framework (eg. a leaky mocking abstraction); Bugs in the tests: the test is doing slightly different than what the programmer thinks it is. Type (1) errors seem to be impossible to prevent (unless the programmer just... gets smarter). However, (2) and (3) may be tractable. How do you deal with these types of errors? Do you have any special strategies to avoid them? For example, do you write some special "empty" tests, that only check the test author's presuppositions? Also, how do you approach debugging a broken test case?

• In retrospect, has it been a good idea to use three-valued logic for SQL NULL comparisons?

  In SQL, NULL means "unknown value". Thus, every comparison with NULL yields NULL (unknown) rather than TRUE or FALSE. From a conceptional point of view, this three-valued logic makes sense. From a practical point of view, every learner of SQL has, one time or another, made the classic WHERE myField = NULL mistake or learned the hard way that NOT IN does not do what one would expect when NULL values are present. It is my impression (please correct me if I am wrong) that the cases where this three-valued logic helps (e.g. WHERE myField IS NOT NULL AND myField <> 2 can be shortened to WHERE myField <> 2) are rare and, in those cases, people tend to use the longer version anyway for clarity, just like you would add a comment when using a clever, non-obvious hack. Is there some obvious advantage that I am missing? Or is there a general consensus among the development community that this has been a mistake?

• Do you test your SQL/HQL/Criteria ?

  Do you test your SQL or SQL generated by your database framework? There are frameworks like DbUnit that allow you to create real in-memory database and execute real SQL. But its very hard to use(not developer-friendly so to speak), because you need to first prepare test data(and it should not be shared between tests). P.S. I don't mean mocking database or framework's database methods, but tests that make you 99% sure that your SQL is working even after some hardcore refactoring.

• segfault when cd-ing into certain directories in bash

  I have noticed this very strange behavior recently. After cd into certain directories, I get a segfault on the terminal. --- SIGSEGV (Segmentation fault) @ 0 (0) --- --- SIGSEGV (Segmentation fault) @ 0 (0) --- +++ killed by SIGSEGV (core dumped) +++ segmentation fault (core dumped) I proceeded to strace a bash session in which I cd into the target directory, and was able to reproduce the problem. • HTMLUNIT Facebook javascript warning

  Hi I am trying to create simple application that would be able to search people on facebook using given e-mail. I am already able to log into an account using the HTMLunit tool and even create a page, which should throw result of my search. But when I try to print the result as XML the file is missing some blocks of javascript results (I can tell that they are missing by comparing file created by my application and source code, that can be viewed by using IE) Is there any way around this? • How to eliminate NULL fields in TSQL

  I am developing a TSQL query in SSMS 2008 R2. I am trying to develop this query to identify one record / client. Because some of these values are NULL, I am currently doing LEFT JOINS on most of the tables. But the problem with the LEFT JOINs is that now I get 1 record for some clients. But if I change this to INNER JOINs then some clients are excluded entirely because they have NULL values for these columns. How do I limit the query result to just one record / client regardless of NULL values? And if there are non-NULL values then I want it to choose the record with non-NULL values. • How to design database for tests in online test application

  I'm building an online test application, the purpose of app is, it can allow teacher create courses, topics of course, and questions (every question has mark), and they can create tests for students and students can do tests online. To create tests of any courses for students, first teacher need to create a test pattern for that course, test pattern actually is a general test includes the number of questions teacher want it has, then from that test pattern, teacher will generate number of tests corresponding with number of students will take tests of that course, and every test for student will has different number of questions, although the max mark of test in every test are the same. Example if teacher generate tests for two students, the max mark of test will be 20, like this: Student A take test with 20 questions, student B take test only has 10 questions, it means maybe every question in test of student A only has mark is 1, but questions in student B has mark is 2. So 20 = 10 x 2, sorry for my bad English but I don't know how to explain it better. I have designed tables for: - User (include students and teachers account) - Course - Topic - Question - Answer But I don't know how to define associations between user and test pattern, test, question. Currently I only can think these: Test pattern table: name, description, dateStart, dateFinish, numberOfMinutes, maxMarkOfTest Test table: test_pattern_id And when user (is Student) take tests, I think i will have one more table: Result: user_id, test_id, mark but I can't set up associations among test pattern and test and question. How to define associations?

• Is Joel Test really a good gauging tool?

  I just learned about Joel Test. I have been computer programmer for 22 years, but somehow never heard about it before. I consider my best job so far to be this small investment managing company with 30 employees and only 3 people in IT department. I am no longer with them but I had being working there for 5 years – my longest streak with any given company. To my surprise they scored extremely poor on Joel Test. The only two questions I would answer “yes” are #4: Do you have a bug database? And #9: Do you use the best tools money can buy? Everything else is either “sometimes” or straight “no”. Here is what I liked about the company however: a) Good pay, they bragged about it to my face and I bragged about it to their face, so it was almost like a family environment. b) I always knew big picture. When writing a code to solve particular problem there were no ambiguity about the business nature of that problem. Even though we did not always had written specs we could ask business users a question anytime, often yelling it across the floor. I could even talk to executives any time I felt like doing it: no appointment necessary. c) Immediate feedback. Once we implement a solution and make business users happy they immediately let us know that, we (programmers) become heroes of the moment. d) No red tape. I could always buy any tools I deem necessary, and design solutions the way my professional judgment dictates. e) Flexibility. If I had mid-day dental appointment that is near my house rather than near the office, I would send email to the company: "FYI: I work from home today". As long as one of 3 IT guys was on the floor (to help traders in case their monitors go dark) they did not care where 2 others are. So the question thus becomes how valuable Joel Test is? Why bother with it?

  I try to setup a project with spring-test using TestNg in Maven. So, test-context.xml is under src/test/resources/, how do I indicate this in the pom.xml so that 'mvn test' command will work? Thanks, UPDATE: Thanks for the reply. UPDATE: I think I got the problem (still don't know why) - Whenever I extends AbstractTestNGSpringContextTests or AbstractTransactionalTestNGSpringContextTests, the test will failed with this error: Failed tests: springTestContextBeforeTestMethod(org.sonatype.mavenbook.simple.AppTest) springTestContextAfterTestMethod(org.sonatype.mavenbook.simple.AppTest) So, eventually the error went away when I override the two methods. I don't think this is the right way, didn't find much info from spring-test doc. If you know spring test framework, please shred some light on this.
