• Are swapped in hot-swap drives allocated the same Windows drive letter each time?

  We are intending on purchasing a dedicated machine to perform the company's backups. We were considering buying the Dell T310, with the theory that we could swap the drives in and out for offsite backup. (As in, take out a drive, put a version a couple of days' old in its place, the old backup is updated to the current version.) One thing that may stymie this, though, is the system changing drive letters as things get moved in and out. Does anyone know whether this happens?

• Tape vs SSDs backups regarding long-term storage reliability

  My question is very specifically about solid state drives, not regular hard drives. I would like to put in place a grandfather-father-son backup scheme, with the SSDs being used for the grandfather and father portions, and the yearly grandfather would be locked in a safe offsite for maybe 5-10 years. Can I expect that after this period of time the data would be preserved as well as it would be on a tape?

  The Default Website for Exchange 2010 on Windows SBS Server 2010 has been deleted (how and why is not important). Now, obviously, I cant access emails via OWA or via HTTP for people offsite. I can not figure out how to reinstall the default website to reinstall OWA and settings? I also can't log into Exchange Mangement Console. The attempt to connect to... using "kerberos" jauthenication failed (probably because it does not exist).

• What's the best way to backup a web server with 30GB of data?

  I currently have a server(Linux) running with around 10'000 users daily on it. The hoster offers a backup which I'm also using. Although I trust my hoster, I would like to have an offsite backup, just in case the hoster goes down for a longer time or goes bankrupt (you never know). My idea was to tar and split the data and copy the archive to my Amazon S3 account but I'm wondering if that's the best idea? Any tip is appreciated. Thanks, Andy

  It seems that there are only two types of payment gateway service out there at the moment; Either that the entire cart logic is handled offsite (with something like Paypal's Standard option) or the other option being that you need to go through the certification for handling credit card numbers and doing pretty much everything yourself. Ideally, for the project I'm working on, I'm after a bit of middle ground such that I can handle the cart on-site, and only pass over to a payment gateway (with an order amount, billing & delivery details, and order ref) for them to handle the card details, before passing back. I'm sure that I've used e-commerce sites using this pattern before, but I cannot find any payment providers out there that offer this sort of option, so are there any? The only over requirement we have at present is that it must accept orders in Sterling.

  Im familiar with seo and getting higher google listings but for allot of services google has recently been making there search results (were applicable) much more location orientated.. for instance searching for a "accountant in london" or "accountancy firm london" will through return the first half of page 1 as google places listings, then under about 6 of these you will get your normal search results so somone who used to rank #1 on page 1 now will rank effectily #7. What i was wandering is that i cant see any reasons as to why the company that rank high in the places results get there, often they are not high up in the search results. Is there a way to optimise on or offsite to rise up the google places listings in your city ?

I've been wondering if doing so is having a negative effect on my rankings (hidden text?) or if it has any effect at all on onsite or offsite keyword relevance calculations. • What's causing Remote Access error 807 using rasdial.exe to connect to a PPTP VPN?

  I'm using rasdial.exe to connect an offsite server to our VPN. Remote box is a Windows 2008 x64 server; the VPN host at this end is a Watchguard Firebox x750e running Fireware 10.2 It connects fine about 20-30% of the time. The rest of the time I get: Remote Access error 807 - The network connection between your computer and the VPN server was interrupted. This can be caused by a problem in the VPN transmission and is commonly the result of internet latency or simply that your VPN server has reached capacity. Please try to reconnect to the VPN server. If this problem persists, contact the VPN administrator and analyze quality of network connectivity. For more help on this error: Type 'hh netcfg.chm' In help, click Troubleshooting, then Error Messages, then 807 The VPN isn't full, and it's 100Mb dedicated fibre on both ends so I can't believe it's a connectivity issue - especially since I'm RDP'ed into the remote box whilst trying to do this! Any bright ideas as to what might be causing the problem? Thanks, Dylan

  HI, i have a cisco ASA 5510 using ASDM version 6.3 We have a webserver that is been written very specifically and i was given super direct "DO NOT DEVIATE" directions. This server has to get traffic from 3 different PUBLIC ip's that we own. (our isp gave use a block of 12 static addresses) on 4 different ports. there are the directions i was given externalIP1:22 - 172.17.5.50:22 - SSH externalIP1:443 - 172.17.5.50:23040 - SIT externalIP2:443 - 172.17.5.50:33040 - STAGE externalIP3:443 - 172.17.5.50:43040 - PROD My first question is, using ASDM (my contract employer demands i use ASDM over CLI) how do i get three public addresses to work on one interface. We are authenticating on PPPoE. I know create a virtual interface with the static address but when i do i cannot ping the address from another offsite machine. secondly, where would i put the traffic redirect in. would i go ahead and create ACL's or just make NAT routes.   We're a small (7 person) fast growing startup who just got our new office and we're having a 100 Mbps line installed from Cogent. I'm not familiar with Juniper devices, however the equivalent Cisco appears to be rather expensive. Features we'd like: Offsite VPN access (PPTP or L2TP IPsec) - something Mac compatible IPv6 support NAT - ideally supporting multiple outside addresses mapped to VLANs DHCP DNS forwarding would be nice QoS to keep our SIP phones happy (managed through RingCentral) VLANs for guest/internal The device is going to be connected to a set of SIP phones as well as two Ruckus 7962s for wireless access. Eventually I'd like to connect it to a Juniper ESX switch as we grow. Would a Juniper SRX240 handle this ok?

• Disk Redundancy across different server

  I have 3 servers, all with the same specs: Intel CPU 8 GB RAM Linux or BSD Single 2TB desktop SATA with more than 10K Hours of operation, with only less than 300 GB Used My provider cannot install a second hard drive, but can guarantee me that the drive will be replaced immediately in case of failure, with another equally crappy drive. The likelihood of drive failure is high, and since I can't use RAID, I was thinking about keeping a back up of each machine on all the other machines, so that there are always 2 copies on 2 different drives, plus the original. I would synchronize the drives every hour, with rsync, to guarantee some sort of redundancy, since bandwidth inside the DC is free, so it would be much cheaper than offsite backup. (A daily offiste backup is kept anyhow). What do you think? Any suggestion?

How can I have the second connection take over when the primary one fails? I have seen that it is possible to have two A records, each pointing to a different IP, but it has several problems. I have look at many services out there, such as: http://www.backblaze.com/ http://www.crashplan.com/ Those services look very good, and a reasonable price. But I am worried about them because of incidents like this: http://jeffreydonenfeld.com/blog/2011/12/crashplan-online-backup-lost-my-entire-backup-archive/ I am wondering if there is any online back solution that offers a service level agreement (SLA) with compensation for data loss at a reasonable price (under $30 per month). Or is there a good solution that offers a high enough level of redundancy to mitigate the risk? Required: Offsite backup to prevent data loss in terms of fire/theft. Redundancy to protect the backup from corruption. A reasonable cost (< $30 per month). A SLA in case the service provider faults on its agreements.

• auto copy newest folders and images in MyPictures folder to USB drive

  I drop lots of photos in a day into the My Documents/My Pictures folder. I archive at the end of each day to USB drives, to be stored offsite. What I would like is someway to automate the process. By example, a small app or script I can simply double-click and it will scan the My Pictures folder for the newest folders and images and copy them to the USB drive until the drive is full. It doesn't matter if I get redundancy from the previous days saved images, so long as the newest images and folders are always the first to get copied. Well, that's my request. Thanks for reading.

• Rsync backup - detect new directory and backup only from that directory

  New cpanel daily backup is creating separate directories for daily backup. This creates problem when I try to user rsync to do an offsite backup since I would like to rsync only latest data. E.g. On backup server I have directory "backup" and on server, from which we are pulling backups I get directories 2013-11-07, 2013-11-08 etc in backup directory. If I backup /backup directory on the server it will use allot more space so I would like to backup only latest directory in backup directory, eg 2013-11-08. Is there a way to detect latest directory in backup directory and pass that directory name to rsync for backup ?

• HDD Carrier, like a soda carrier available at McDonalds?

  We use external USB drives for backups, and they have to be stored offsite at the end of the week. Right now we have your standard external USB drive inside an enclosure. We were thinking about moving to a USB dock, and dock a bare HDD for backups, rather than having various sized and types of enclosures. If we were to do this, the drives need protection while being transported to/from the safety deposit box. Is there any kind of hard drive carrier that would let us slide two drives into it, and it would provide protection while the drives are carried around by non-technical people? I'm afraid such a product doesn't exist, but perhaps someone knows of something?

• Password expiration notice for Active Directory

  Are there any tools/apps/scripts out there that will do password expiry notification for Windows 2008 Active Directory credentials? This is needed for our web apps that use Active Directory for LDAP authentication. The problem is those apps do not notify you that your password is going to expire when you login. We have many offsite users who do not have machines bound to the AD. So there is no way to let them know to reset their password. I'd like the user to be notified 30,7 and 1 day before it expires. I'd also like our help desk to get an email for the expiring passwords for the week and recently expired passwords. I've looked at oldcmp.exe from link text and that gets me my reports but it does not do the automation that I'm looking for on the individual users.

• how to find a good data center?

  At my start-up, we're getting to the point where we should be hosting our servers at a data center. I'd appreciate any tips and tricks y'all can offer on finding a reputable place to colocate our racks. Are there any Web sites with customer reviews of data centers or should I just be asking around at techie events? Are unlimited bandwidth plans a gimmick or becoming the norm? Is it worth establishing a redundant set of machines at a second data center from Day One? Or just do offsite back-ups? Thanks for your suggestions.
