• Facebook shared links not opening (Redirecting correctly) [on hold]

  I have been in a problem and after hours of searching find nothing useful to counter it. I have a website, and that website has RSS feed attached to facebook page. As I post the content to website it also appears on facebook page. But I have people complaining on my page that my posts don't open when they click the link to read the details. Since I am a Chrome user and didn't notice this happening for months. But as I checked it through firefox and Internet Explorer, I found the links shared actually don't open with these browswers. They only work in Chrome, means they are properly redirected in chrome browser and not in firefox and IE. Whenever I click on links of posts on my page through IE or firefox the url does not simply redirect to my website and I get to see nothing as if I am not connecting to Internet. When examining URL I see this: http://www.facebook.com/l.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fbit.ly%2F112NVO9&h=EAQHDgTUv&s=1 Which shows that facebook is not redirecting the links properly. Moreover I also use link shortening service bit.ly to shorten my shared links. I have checked same problem exists even if I don't shorten my links. And I checked I am not alone, even the tech giant website mashable.com links also don't open in IE and FF from facebook, they only open in Chrome. From mobile phone the links don't open (redirected properly) even in chrome. Can anyone tell me what is the issue? Nothing much is written about it on Internet as no once has faced this problem. P.S: I have checked from different systems, the problem persists.

  Besides lesser errors on 11.10, I ran into a more annoying one: I cannot access NTFS partitions. No matter whether I use nautilus, dolphin, tux commander or archive manager, always does the same thing, could not mount 'disc name': Not authorised' There were several fixes of problems with access to NTFS partitions, but none of them helped. When I used nautilus in sudo mode, the partition looked empty, although when I booted on windows, there were files. It was reported as a bug somewhere. Can anyone help me?

• Screen dims on opening certain applications on Macbook

  I have ubuntu 11.10 installed on an old 2008 macbook. There is an issue of screen dimming that I didnt find anywhere else on the forums. The issue is that the screen is dimmed when I open certain applications (Firefox, Software Center) and this cannot be readjusted by the physical brightness buttons on the keyboard. I tried a bunch of things on the barely barely visible screen, and had no choice but to restart. This has happened everytime. Does anyone know how to solve this?

• Opening / using WUBI after downloading

  I have no problem downloading WUBI either using Firefox or IE. Either way, however, when I try to run or open it, I get a message to the effect that the file cannot run because the configuration is incorrect and "re-installing the file may help" (which it doesn't - I've tried several times). What am doing wrong ? I am running XP Pro. (Note: my Ubuntu CD works just fine but I want to install Ubuntu inside Windows).

• Opening a Gtk.Window that covers Launcher and Panel

  I am trying to create a GtkWindow that would be on top of all the windows. This includes Unity's Launcher and Panel. I am working on Kazam screen recorder and one of the options of the program is recording an arbitrary area of the screen. For this, I open a GtkWindow and let user resize it and move it around the screen to the desired location. The problem is when user wants to resize the window over the Panel (or Launcher). It can't be done. It seems that window manager is preventing this. I can move the window under panel and launcher if I ALT-drag it, but the problem because area selection window stays below Launcher and Panel. Any ideas are more than welcome.

• Banshee doesn't like opening websites

  I have come across two bugs (which will be added to launchpad if it's not resolved here) When I open any of the websites in Banshee Amazon or Miro Guide as soon as the site is finished loading it crashes Banshee. If I play any video local or remote it will show 1 frame maybe 0.5 sec of video then I get a black screen and audio continues in the backgound. Specs & Details I have a Fujitsu Amilo 1718 laptop with 2 gig of ram (original 1 gig) graphics is provided by ATI Radeon Xpress 200M (don't laugh it works with compiz....just) I have a link to the output of banshee --debug Here Don't have time to read? So if any one has come across a fix for this problem please share!! additional info Both VLC and Miro work on my system so there isn't a system wide problem with video and I haven't mentioned mono so no trolling it will get voted down.

• Set default app for opening an extension [closed]

  I am using Linux Mint 13 with Cinnamon. I have a problem setting an application to open a file with some extension when the application is actually only extracted, not really installed using apt-ger or .deb file. For example - Blender. You can download a .tar.gz from official site which you then extract and you can just run the app. However, it isn't listed in the default apps list (Right Clickon file - Open with other application - Show all installed apps). So now I have to always open the application first and open the file from there. How can I solve this?

  I'm running Ubuntu version 12.04 on Dell D620 laptop and have been for months. Everything has been working fine until a week ago, when suddenly every time I close the laptop and open it again, the program in use blinks each time I make a keystroke. Only the program blinks, not the whole screen. Rebooting solves the issue until I close the lid again. I have installed all the updates recommended in the package manager. Clues?

• Vlc Player not opening

  For the last few days, my vlc player is not responding at all, when i try to double click any file or even run vlc without any file, it just doesn't open up. I tried to open it through terminal and it was working fine but there were no option coming on vlc screen and also if i close the terminal, vlc closes automatically. I can't figure how to make vlc back to its original way so that i can access any file through vlc. Any help will be appreciated..

Due to this problem I had given my CPU to a shop to repair it I don't know what he has done to my CPU but I only know that finally I got my CPU with Ubuntu 13.04. The technician was unable to make any partition and I also think that he had installed 13.04 over 12.04 and so now my computer is showing some error when I'm starting my computer the error is as follows: error: attempt to read or write outside of the disk 'hd0'. grub rescue _ Before showing this error, few times my computer was working very slow. So kindly someone tell me that is there any way by which I can start my computer. Please also tell me that what things I have to keep in mind while using Ubuntu so that in future I find no difficulties(errors) while using Ubuntu.

• Dual monitor Unity launcher opening on wrong monitor in 11.10

  I just upgraded to Oneiric and now the Unity Dash launcher is on my left screen. I really want it on my right screen. But how do I do that? Why do I want the Dash on my right screen? My left screen is a smaller older monitor that I use to read/watch documentation or keep my music player open. I work on my right screen, that is bigger and is a better monitor. I have an Nvidia card and in the nvidia settings it is setup that the right monitor is my primary monitor, but Oneiric doesn't follow this setting anymore. I thought this was a bug, but is seems to be intended behavior... https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/742544 Some poster in this thread explains that he "patched it locally", but I have no idea how to do this. • Steam not opening or responding at all

  The steam client won't open nor does it display any error message. I have tried right click > Games. I ran steam steam://open/games command, but the client just does not respond. Removing it with apt-get remove steam, deleting the Steam directory & the .deb file and reinstalling it, did not work either. This problem only occurred after I used killall steam.sh to force quit it, it was working fine before. I'm running 12.10 on a 64bit laptop with no additional drivers installed. Anyone else have this problem and a possible workaround? Thank you

  I have a Dell D610 - Intel graphics - 1 Gig RAM. I have test the hard drive and RAM and both are fine. When I open Software Center, then Dash home my system locks up. The mouse cursor moves but is unresponsive if I try to right or left click anything. The keyboard is totally unresponsive and I have to hold the power button to power off! I have reinstalled from CD, did all updates but the issue persists. I tried using the track pad only, and I plugged in an external mouse also but no change. Everything else works great ! • Virtualbox errors out when creating or opening VM

  I installed Virtual-box about a week ago and now every time I either try to start a VM or create a new one I get the error listed below. I am in the vboxusers group. I completely uninstalled and re-installed the application without any change in the error. When I run the command below I receive "command not found". Then when I try to install dkms they systems says it is already installed. Right now I have removed the application and any files and would love to re-install the application again to get it working. I remove the application using: sudo apt-get remove virtualbox* --purge Any ideas? Kernel driver not installed (rc=-1908) The VirtualBox Linux kernel driver (vboxdrv) is either not loaded or there is a permission problem with /dev/vboxdrv. Please reinstall the kernel module by executing '/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup' as root. If it is available in your distribution, you should install the DKMS package first. • Opening programs very slow on ubuntu 12.10

  When I open any program for first time after boot, it loads VERY slowly (Doesn't matter how long after boot). For example, terminal takes 2-3 seconds, skype and firefox often take much longer. If I close it and open again, it loads in reasonable time (<1 second). I got Intel Core i5-2500K CPU @ 3.30GHz, so it shouldn't be hardware issue... What is causing this? Disk benchmark: Average read time: 115.5 MB/s (100 samples) Average write time: 98.7 MB/s (100 samples) Average access time: 11.79 msec (1000 samples)

• Monitor flashes black when starting video files, opening folders with video files

  My entire monitor flashes black for a second or so when starting any video file. It does the same thing when closing the file. It also does this when opening a folder that has video files and a thumbnail view, or when I do anything that presumably accesses the video stream inside a video file. It happens in VLC and Windows Media Player, though it occurs to me certain video editors I have like avidemux and virtualdub don't have that issue when opening video files... It also does not happen when watching flash-based videos on web sites. It doesn't seem to happen when Quicktime. I went through and uninstalled any extraneous programs a week or so ago and didn't see any change. I also updated the graphics card driver. What can I do to troubleshoot/fix this?

  Hi all, I am having a problem opening a .docx file on my Word 2003. I have installed the Compatibility pack for 2007 but when i try to open this particular file, I receive the error "Word experienced an error trying to open the file. Try these suggestions. 1. Check the file permissions for the document, 2. Make sure there is sufficient free memory and disk space, 3. Open the file with the Text Recovery converter. I do not think it is any of the errors as I am able to open it on a different PC with Word 2003 as well. I also do not have any issues opening any non-password encrypted .docx files. Has anyone experienced the same issue? Most posts on the internet relate to "open and repair" but as mentioned, I am able to open this file on another PC without any problems. • Trobleshooting extremely slow opening times in Win7 for documents on Win2k8 server

  Hello. It's hard even to describe my problem. It seems there's only problem with extreme slow openings (up to 10 minutes) on Windows 7 (on XP things works fine) for files that are stored on Windows Server 2008. And now what I discovered up till now. If I open (some files, not all, not allways) .doc and .xls files with doubleclicking it takes up to 10 minutes to finaly open the file. In that time, file seems to be locked for all other users. If I cancel opening, file remains locked for some time. Owner on that files is the one who last wrote changes in them. If I change the owner to larger group, which I am member of file gets opened super fast. When opened file can be saved normaly and fast. That file reopens fast. One other user reports that there is only problem when opening the files for the first time in a day. When he openes first file he has no problems with other files at all (or so he says). He also states that when accessing files from home via VPN he has no such problems with files. And now: anybody has a clue where to start looking? I suppose that is misconfiguration problem. But where? File system? Permissions? DFS? VMWare network config? My setup is as follows: Physical server: HP Prolian ML350 G6 Virtual host: VMWare ESXi 4 Guest: Windows Server 2008 Standard Files are accessed via DFS shares. Please help me. Thanks. Mazupan

  What does opening the standard PC serial port do, in electrical terms (i.e. what voltages on which pins)? For example, the ancient VB6 program which controls an apparatus I am tasked with maintaining toggles .PortOpen to control some TTL. The connection only used 2 pins (bad solders fell apart), so which pins do I solder to? The only labels / documentation refer to pins 7 and 9, saying 0V and 5V parenthetically, but does .PortOpen really just put 5V between RI and RTS?. As a post script, this isn't the weirdest thing about the set up. The TTL I referred to above also connects to an instrument via a BNC to DB9 (!), with only 1 pin used. I guess there was an assumption about a common ground, since the BNC shielding isn't connected to the GND pin? The connection is to the instrument's 'foot pedal' pin, it was a way to remotely trigger the device. Update According to this page, the DTR and RTS pins can go high when the port is opened. If they were so configured, they will subsequently go low when the port is closed. If DTR and RTS are not enabled, opening the port should set both to low (and keep them low).

  Using jQuery UI 1.8rc3 combined with the new jquery.effects.fade.js code, I've been able to finally apply fade-in and fade-out effects to opening the UI Dialog widgets. Hooray! $dialog.dialog({ show: { effect: "fade", options: {}, speed: 150 } } This works great - unfortunately, there's the known IE7 & 8 bug where the ClearType gets turned off by the application of an empty filter: style attribute after the fade effect is finished. I have the code to remove the filter attribute, I just can't find a good way to hook it into the event chain. The dialog's "open" and "focus" events are too soon. I need something like a "dialog opening animation is finished" callback. How can I hook up a callback to the end of the opening effect for a dialog?
