• Identifying cause of Software opening hundreds of thousands of handles

  I have a user running the latest public revision of IBM Notes (8.5.4) on a Windows 7 Pro OA installation. Under his profile and only his, when the software is run, the software opens hundreds of thousands of handles, regarding token queries. This involves only this specific user, on his computer, using only said software. I have narrowed down the issue to being related to his profile but am unsure of what to look at next. Any advice would be appreciated.

• "Windows cannot find" file when opening Excel spreadsheet

  For all of my Excel spreadsheets when I attempt to open them (by double-clicking in explorer) I get the message "Windows cannot find C:...". The files are there, and are valid zip files as seen by 7-Zip. There are no apparent lock files in the directories. I did just install Norton-360 over the weekend (replacing Kasperski), but the Norton log shows no events related to Excel. However, while installing Norton I did reboot with some Excel files open. Presumably something is hosed in my Excel configuration but I don't know what. Update (Before actually posting) -- I found an article that suggested turning off Advanced Option "Ignore other applications that use DDE", then doing excel.exe /unregister followed by excel.exe /register. I tried this but I suspect that the two Excel calls were ignored (Excel opened, but no obvious change). With that option off the spreadsheets load OK, but not with it on. And, curiously, spreadsheets load OK with the option on or off if I open Excel first and then open the spreadsheet in it. Does anyone have any idea what effect leaving that option off will have? Update 2 -- I tried running the "repair" option. It said it corrected a couple of config things (without saying what they were), but I still get a failure if I double-click an Excel file with the "Ignore other applications..." option checked. Update 3 -- I managed to fix this problem, but failed at the time to come back and say what I did, and now I can't remember for sure. But I think it had something to do with "Options"/"Save" and some of the values there. Something to do with AutoRecover, perhaps. (Possibly there was a file in recovery and I had to specify "Disable AutoRecover for this workbook" to let bring-up get past it. Or perhaps the AutoRecover file location was hosed.) Anyway, if it happens to someone else, and you find the fix, post it below and I'll mark it answered.

  When I open a PowerPoint file which I received via e-mail in PowerPoint 2010, I get the following error message: PowerPoint found an error that it can't correct. You should save presentations, exit, and then restart PowerPoint. Even if you click OK the error message appears again and again and makes it difficult to quit PowerPoint. Furthermore it gives no indication what caused the problem or how to solve it.

• OSX Menu bar doesn't appear til opening an application

  When I boot my MBP, the menu bar doesn't appear. When I open Mail.app or Safari, the menu bar appears. I've searched for a bit, and nothing seems to talk about this. Is there a way to fix this? • Opening port 80 in router has no results

  A friend of mine has a ADSL modem and I need to forward some ports. I have already forwarded the 1521 port (Oracle) and it's working fine. Now I need to forward the port 80. I already set up his IIS bindings to this port, and also forwarded the port like this video shows: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DLKD-fyexoo So I think I did everything correctly. The local IP address is also the same as the machine where the IIS server is running. I'm sorry, but I can't post images since i don't have 10 points :( Somehow I can't forward this port, yougetsignal.com keeps saying that the door is closed. When I try to open the port, the Control Panel says me that I have to access the control panel in the 8080 port, because the 80 port will be open. Ok, that's fine. But I'm still able to access it in the 80 port, and when I try to access it in the 8080 port, it doesn't work. I'm trying it with the TPLINK 8816, but I also tried to open it in the Opticom DsLink 279, and it didn't worked (using another machine), I got the exact same results. He has a dynamic IP address, but he is also using No-ip, so I can always access his Oracle database in a certain static address. The 1521 port is open. I also tried to disable the firewall in Windows, but that makes no sense to me, since the router doesn't really open the port 80. Clearly I'm missing something. I have never done it in my life, so I dont know how to proceed. Restarting the router was the first I did, no results. I'm accessing his laptop through TeamViewer, so I'm testing the port outside his local network. Edit: My ISP says that they allow to open ports, and the 1521 port is opened. What could I do to open the 80 port?

The solution is simple. Pressing Option + Shift + (media keys) does not fire up / alert iTunes. I've tried it with VLC and Spotify on an external keyboard with media keys and it works fine.

  Is there a Firefox add-on that will allow someone to easily open up a page in a new tab or window so it will not share cookies and other session information with other windows? Basically, I want to be able to run Facebook, GMail, Google Search, etc, in separate sandboxes using different accounts. I recall seeing a blog posting about an add-on that did this without forcing you to set up different Firefox profiles, but I can't remember where I saw it or what it was called.

• Excel (.xls) files not opening in Excel when launched from Explorer

  I appear to have done something to Excel (2003) whereby whenever I double-click on an Excel file (.xls) in Windows Explorer, Excel launches OK, but the corresponding workbook doesn't open, and I'm left with an instance of Excel with no active workbook, i.e. a grey screen. It was fine earlier on, but now it's goosed. It's clearly not windows file associations, as Excel launches ok. It's a problem specific to Excel itself... Any thoughts what I might have done to give rise to this? Many thanks, Alex.

• Opening offline version of Microsoft Books Online in browser

  I often use the MSDN website for language reference. In order to make navigation faster, I downloaded the offline version of SQL Server 2005 Books Online from here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=be6a2c5d-00df-4220-b133-29c1e0b6585f&displaylang=en The reason why it is 137MB is that it comes with its own GUI, which, not surprisingly, is rather poor! Apparently though, the pages are written in html. The URIs look like: ms-help://MS.SQLCC.v9/sqlcc9/html/674933a8-e423-4d44-a39b-2a997e2c2333.htm . I can open the URI in IE, but with errors. Do you know if I can open them with Firefox and how? Or is there a simple HTML version of "MS Books Online", for example in a ZIP file?

• Opening an oracle database crashes the service

  I am experiencing a weird issue with Oracle where the service started fine after a crash. The database mount went fine as well. However, when I issue alter database open; command, the database does not open, gives a generic cannot connect to the database error & crashes the service. Oracle support has not seen this issue before so it's pretty scary. The fact that there are no logs that give any leads as to what could be causing this is also scary. I was wondering if good folks over at Server Fault had seen something like this or have some insights on things that I could try. It's Oracle 10g running on Windows Server 2003. Thanks, Ashish

• Links not opening in Windows 8 applications

  I have just upgraded my laptop from Windows 7 Ultimate with IE9 to Windows 8 with IE 10. When ever I try to open a web link in an application nothing happens. For example in the Windows 8 mail application it makes the email address in an email look like a link. When I click on these with the mouse the link changes to look like I have clicked on it, but aside from that nothing happens. I have tried making sure that IE 10 is my default web browser and been into IE10's settings and associated it with all the usual file types, but still no success. Has anyone got any ideas what might be causing this? I have a feeling this started when the Browser Choice update ran. I couldn't select which browser to install in that either. The install buttons just flashed when I clicked them and then nothing. PS I would have added an IE10 tag to this post, but apparently I don't have the reputation required to do so.

  At work, I have a few legacy servers that I log into as root, and then su down to a user. I continue to run into an issue where after doing so, I am unable to run screen as this user. I don't want to open screen as root, because then I have to consciously su down the user every new shell, and I often forget. The question is, is there an easier resolution to this than I'm currently aware of? My current solution is to find my terminal pts number, then set it chmod 666. I'm looking for something akin to X11's xhost ACL management, if such a thing exists for this situation.

  I am using Eclipse in Linux through a remote connection (xrdp). My internet got disconnected, so I got disconnected from the server while eclipse was running. Now I logged in again, and I do the "top" command I can see that eclipse is running and still under my user name. Is there some way I can bring that process back into my view (I do not want to kill it because I am in the middle of checking in a large swath of code)? It doesnt show up on the bottom panel after I logged in again.   I need help with my browsers. In Windows 7 Basic I have 2 browsers installed: Internet Explorer 8 and Google Chrome. When I try to open pages which are associated with Microsoft (like Live and others), my browser crashes; Internet Explorer 8 crashes too. But Opera (I've installed it later) works fine with those pages. P.S. I tried to scan my PC for trojans and viruses, but it's clean.

  When all of the following conditions are true, excel will open (most of the time) but will not open the document itself. No error is displayed. This only occurs with Excel files, Word and powerpoint do open perfectly. Following options do open the excel file as it should : right click and selecting the (bold) open action single click the file and pressing enter moving the file to the desktop and double-click it. non password protected files do open from the same directory. Actions taken not resolving the problem: - reboot - repair office installation - system restore does not work because of Antivirus application installed (message from system restore, using "Symantec Internet Security 2010") Anyone any idea ?

• Problem opening XWindows programs with xming and SSH Secure Shell

  I've installed SSH Secure Shell and xming on my laptop running Windows 7 (64-bit). I'm having trouble starting X Windows applications from the SSH console. I've been able to do it in the past. I've pretty much determined that it's not a server issue because I've tried it on two different servers (both servers are running RHEL 5). Running "echo $DISPLAY" on either server gave me "localhost:10.0". My XLaunch configuration settings are: Multiple Windows, 10 (display number), and Start no client. Once xming has launched, I'll try to execute something like "firefox" and I get this back: The application 'firefox' lost its connection to the display localhost:10.0; most likely the X server was shut down or you killed/destroyed the application. I've already checked to make sure that the X server is running and it is: root 12579 2689 0 Feb14 tty7 00:04:23 /usr/bin/Xorg :0 -br -audit 0 -auth /var/gdm/:0.Xauth -nolisten tcp vt7 Additionally, X11 Tunneling has been enabled in SSH as well as SSH 2 connections.

• VS 2010 Security Warning When Opening My Own Projects

  Whenever I try to open my own projects in VS 2010 Express, I get the following message: You should only open projects from a trustworthy source I can click OK on the message and open the solution, but I would prefer to not get warned every time I open my solution. The files were not downloaded from the Internet; they are sitting right on my department's network drive. There's nothing to unblock if I look at the Properties window for the project file. • Allow opening a new tab with Ctrl+T on all websites in Firefox

  In Firefox, certain websites and plugins (Adobe PDF Plugin) appear to "capture" the Control key, so that when I try to open a new tab using "Ctrl+t", nothing happens - or worse, something unexpected happens. Examples: On the Codecademy site, while editing code, Ctrl+T either does nothing, or (when Flash is disabled) switches the position of the two characters next to the cursor. When viewing PDF's with the Adobe PDF Plugin, Ctrl+T does nothing. Is there a way to disable this "feature"? I would like "Ctrl+t" to always "talk" to Firefox! Edit: After searching superuser deeper, this question is very similar to the questions: "How to prevent keystroke grabbing/hijacking by websites in Firefox?" "How do I prevent pages I visit from overriding selected Firefox shortcut keys?". The answers to these questions are interesting and relevant, but do not give a method on how to disable combinatinos such as "Ctrl+t". Maybe a modified Greasemonkey script is the easiest solultion. Edit 2 - Attempt at a solution The following UserScript (Use GreaseMonkey to install it) successfully captures Ctrl+t on some sites (Google Search site, for instance - PopUp "Gotcha" appears), but not on the Codecademy site. I found another question pertaining to this subject here: "How to forbid keyboard shortcut stealing by websites in Firefox".   Some websites are not opening in my system. I am using Ubuntu 12.10. Earlier, when I was using Ubuntu 10.10,11.10 there was no such issue. The problem was started in ubuntu 12.04, but it remained the same even after formatting and installing ubuntu 12.10. I have tried Firefox as well as Chromium and I am sure the issue is not with the browser. same websites are opening perfectly with Windows. Google, Twitter and Ubuntu related websites are running perfect. Other websites like www.downrightnow.com, easy-mantra.com, facebook.com, sourceforge.net are not opening. Installed dual boot with win xp. Ubuntu 12.10 is 64 bit. • OpenOffice.org 3 waits 25 seconds before opening

  I'm on Fedora 14, and OpenOffice 3.3.0 takes a long time to open (about 30 seconds, sometimes less). It isn't a CPU or disk performance issue, it's just simply a very long delay before the program opens. It appears to be a frivolous network connection timing out. According to Wireshark, it tries to look up: dulcimer.(none) which fails, after which it tries to look up: dulcimer.(none).mylitestream.com (dulcimer is my hostname, and LiteStream is my ISP) Is there a way to work around this bug in OpenOffice?
