• Localization of Settings.bundle defaultvalues

  How can I have a localized default values in the Settings bundle? I encounter this problem for regionally sensitive defaults. Consider an option in the settings bundle to indicate whether to show distances in miles or kilometers. The default settings for en_US and en_GB is 'miles, and km for everywhere else. Does the SDK provide a settings for that? Or should I just add a third option: 'Infer metric system, miles, kms'

• Port Redirection on Mac OS X Lion

  I have tried to solve this issue using pf but with no luck. Basically, I am trying to redirect incoming port 443 traffic to port 22. I have tried to set up a rule in a file and load it in pf but I get syntax error. Can anyone with more experience with pf provide some insight? Here's what I've attempted: pass in on en1 proto tcp from any to any port 443 rdr-to 127.0.0.1 port 22 and pass in quick proto tcp to port 443 rdr-to 127.0.0.1 port 22 I've been able to do this in MacOSX Snow Leopard with ipfw: sudo ipfw add 1443 forward 127.0.0.1,22 ip from any to any 443 in but it doesn't work in Lion (it gives me an Invalid Argument error).

  I asked in the Ubuntu area, but thought I would get a better answer here. Was anyone able to install packetfence on Ubuntu 10? I tried a tutorial, but didn't have any luck. Some of the services installed and are working apache with php, snort, pfdetect, and pfdhcplistener. I can even get info with pfcmd node view all, but for the life of me I can't get it to work with apache2. When I run pfcmd service pf start I also get an error uninitialized value $_[7] in join at /usr/local/pf/lib/pf/class.pm line 170

• Simple animation using C#/Windows Forms

  I need to knock out a quick animation in C#/Windows Forms for a Halloween display. Just some 2D shapes moving about on a solid background. Since this is just a quick one-off project I really don't want to install and learn an entire new set of tools for this. (DirectX dev kits, Silverlight, Flash, etc..) I also have to install this on multiple computers so anything beyond the basic .Net framework (2.0) would be a pain in the arse. For tools I've got VS2k8, 25 years of development experience, a wheelbarrow, holocaust cloak, and about 2 days to knock this out. I haven't done animation since using assembler on my Atari 130XE (hooray for page flipping and player/missile graphics!) Advice? Here's some of the things I'd like to know: I can draw on any empty widget (like a panel) by fiddling with it's OnPaint handler, right? That's how I'd draw a custom widget. Is there a better technique than this? Is there a page-flipping technique for this kind of thing in Windows Forms? I'm not looking for a high frame rate, just as little flicker/drawing as necessary. Thanks. Post Mortem Edit ... "a couple of coding days later" Well, the project is done. The links below came in handy although a couple of them were 404. (I wish SO would allow more than one reply to be marked "correct"). The biggest problem I had to overcome was flickering, and a persistent bug when I tried to draw on the form directly. Using the OnPaint event for the Form: bad idea. I never got that to work; lots of mysterious errors (stack overflows, or ArgumentNullExceptions). I wound up using a panel sized to fill the form and that worked fine. Using the OnPaint method is slow anyway. Somewhere online I read that building the PaintEventArgs was slow, and they weren't kidding. Lots of flickering went away when I abandoned this. Skip the OnPaint/Invalidate() and just paint it yourself. Setting all of the "double buffering" options on the form still left some flicker that had to be fixed. (And I found conflicting docs that said "set them on the control" and "set them on the form". Well controls don't have a .SetStyle() method.)   I've made a simple Javascript code for a shopping basket but now I have realised that I have made a error with making it and don't know how to fix it.   I would like to design a web app that functions as a simple thesaurus : a long list of words with attributes, all of which are linked to each other. Wikipedia defines it as: In Information Science, Library Science, and Information Technology, specialized thesauri are designed for information retrieval. They are a type of controlled vocabulary, for indexing or tagging purposes. Such a thesaurus can be used as the basis of an index for online material. The Art and Architecture Thesaurus, for example, is used to index the Canadian Information retrieval thesauri are formally organized so that existing relationships between concepts are made explicit. What database software, design or model would best fit this? Are PHP and MySQL good technologies to handle it?

  I have a new site that has multiple top-level domains and subdomains all going to it: www.domain.com, campaign.domain.com, chicago.domain.com, domain2.com - all go to the same site/site directory. Right now I have one Google Analytics account profile set up for it, but I want to be able to track the traffic that is hitting those different URLs separately. The domains are being routed on the server-side (not .htaccess). How can I do this in Google Analytics? Do I need to create filters? Or create different profiles for each domain?

• Unable to debug an encodded javascript?

  I’m having some problems debugging an encoded javacscript. This script I’m referring to given in this link over here. The encoding here is simple and it works by shifting the unicodes values to whatever Codekey was use during encoding. I don’t see anything in the code above which tells it to decode on the basis of codekey value. The only thing I can point in the encoding text is the last character which is set to 1 , 2 ,3 or 4 depending upon the codekey selected during encoding process. One can verify using the link I have given above. However, to debug, I’m using firebug addon with the script running as localhost on my wamp server. I’m able to put a breakpoint on the js using firebug but I’m unable to retrieve any of the user defined parameters or functions I mentioned above. I want to know under this context what would be best way to debug this encoded js.

• What's up with LDoms: Part 9 - Direct IO

Solaris will create nodes for this hardware under /devices.  This includes entries for the virtual PCI root complex (pci_0 in the diagram) and anything between it and the actual endpoint device.  It is very important to understand that all of this PCIe infrastructure is virtual only!  Only the actual endpoint devices are true physical hardware. There is an implicit dependency between the guest owning the endpoint device and the root domain owning the real PCIe infrastructure: Only if the root domain is up and running, will the guest domain have access to the endpoint device. The root domain is still responsible for resetting and configuring the PCIe infrastructure (root complex, PCIe level configurations, error handling etc.) because it owns this part of the physical infrastructure. This also means that if the root domain needs to reset the PCIe root complex for any reason (typically a reboot of the root domain) it will reset and thus disrupt the operation of the endpoint device owned by the guest domain.  The result in the guest is not predictable.  I recommend to configure the resulting behaviour of the guest using domain dependencies as described in the Admin Guide in Chapter "Configuring Domain Dependencies". Please consult the Admin Guide in Section "Creating an I/O Domain by Assigning PCIe Endpoint Devices" for all the details! As you can see, there are several restrictions for this feature.  It was introduced in LDoms 2.0, mainly to allow the configuration of guest domains that need access to tape devices.  Today, with the higher number of PCIe root complexes and the availability of SR-IOV, the need to use this feature is declining.  I personally do not recommend to use it, mainly because of the drawbacks of the depencies on the root domain and because it can be replaced with SR-IOV (although then with similar limitations). This was a rather short entry, more for completeness.  I believe that DIO can usually be replaced by SR-IOV, which is much more flexible.  I will cover SR-IOV in the next section of this blog series.

• Assigning a pointer variable to a const int in C++?

  I'm wondering if anyone can explain the following to me: If I write int i = 0; float* pf = i; I get a compile error (gcc 4.2.1): error: invalid conversion from ‘int’ to ‘float*’ Makes sense - they are obviously two completely different types. But if instead I write const int i = 0; float* pf = i; It compiles without error. Why should the 'const' make a difference on the right hand side of the assignment? Isn't part of the idea of the 'const' keyword to be able to enforce type constraints for constant values? Any explanation I have been able to come up with feels kind of bogus. And none of my explanations also explain the fact that const int i = 1; float* pf = i; fails to compile. Can anyone offer an explanation?

And i cannot set as Desired unit the Inch(1) or feet(3), it gives the Infinity error. And if i put as Original and Desired unit the inch(1), the outcome is "Not a Number". • All parts of my Printable Swing component doesn't print

  I'm trying to do a printable component (an invoice document). I use JComponent instead of JPanel because I don't want a background. The component has many subcomponents. The main component implements Printable and has a print-method that is calling printAll(g) so that all subcomponents should be printed. But my subcomponents doesn't print. What am I missing? • Legacy non-dpi-aware application resolution scaling?

  Our environment prominently featuers an outdated but absolutely mission-critical Win32 application that is not dpi-aware. It is optimized for an 800x600 display. Most of our users now have 17"-20" displays with native resolutions ranging from 1280x1024 to 1680x1050. However, they still operate these displays at 800x600 because the text in this legacy application is otherwise too small. Of course, it also means that nothing quite fits on the screen in Office 2007. Most of our workstations still run Windows XP, but some are on Windows 7 and there are more to come. About one-third of our users run the app remotely via MS Terminal Services, and the remainder run it locally. Is anyone aware of any method that could be used to scale this specific application to about 170%, so that it would fill a 1280x1024 screen, without affecting other applications that work best at the display's native resolution? I know how to do this in Mac OS X, but I have never found a way to do it in Windows. Of course, this ideally would be something that we could push out via Group Policy. I suppose we even could create a custom MSI package to re-deploy the legacy application with some sort of display virtualization layer, if such a thing exists.

  We recently updated our SQL 2008 server to use SP 2 and its causing a few headaches. We use SSRS on this server and when a client tries to print a report by the built-in print function, we're needing to download the RsClientPrint ActiveX control from the server from the client gets the following error Unable to load client print control. We have about 700 computers that are needing this fixed and I've followed the instructions found on the following URL: http://www.kodyaz.com/articles/client-side-printing-silent-deployment-of-rsclientPrint.aspx We have two issues: Most of the users who will be using this ActiveX control are not local administrators so they will not be able to install the control themselves Since there are so many computers, this has to be done silently behind the scenes run by a local admin account After following the information from the link above, we're able to put the files in the C:\Windows\System32 folder and register the DLL but we still get the same problem. The only small thing I've noticed is that in the HTML for the report page, everything that references a version is referencing version 2007.100.4000.00 and the version of the DLL that I pulled from the report server is 2007.100.1600.22. Also, for some clients that are local administrators, they are prompted every time to install the ActiveX control when they click print. This works successfully but we can't have the user asked if they want to install the same control every time they need to print.

• How to inspect remote SMTP server's TLS certificate?

  We have an Exchange 2007 server running on Windows Server 2008. Our client uses another vendor's mail server. Their security policies require us to use enforced TLS. This was working fine until recently. Now, when Exchange tries to deliver mail to the client's server, it logs the following: A secure connection to domain-secured domain 'ourclient.com' on connector 'Default external mail' could not be established because the validation of the Transport Layer Security (TLS) certificate for ourclient.com failed with status 'UntrustedRoot. Contact the administrator of ourclient.com to resolve the problem, or remove the domain from the domain-secured list. Removing ourclient.com from the TLSSendDomainSecureList causes messages to be delivered successfully using opportunistic TLS, but this is a temporary workaround at best. The client is an extremely large, security-sensitive international corporation. Our IT contact there claims to be unaware of any changes to their TLS certificate. I have asked him repeatedly to please identify the authority that generated the certificate so that I can troubleshoot the validation error, but so far he has been unable to provide an answer. For all I know, our client could have replaced their valid TLS certificate with one from an in-house certificate authority. Does anyone know a way to manually inspect a remote SMTP server's TLS certificate, as one can do for a remote HTTPS server's certificate in a web browser? It could be very helpful to determine who issued the certificate and compare that information against the list of trusted root certificates on our Exchange server.

• What can lead to a zone memory exhaustion and how Nginx reacts to it?

  What is a possible scenario for exhausting the memory designated to a connection zone with limit_conn_zone directive and what are the implication in this case? Suppose I have this in my configuration: http { limit_conn_zone $binary_remote_addr zone=connzone:1m; ... server { limit_conn connzone 5; which, according to the documentation, allocates 16000 states for connzone on a 64-bit server. It also says that If the storage for a zone is exhausted, the server will return error 503 (Service Temporarily Unavailable) to all further requests. Well, Ok. But what does it mean on practice? When does this happen? Who receives those 503s? Does it mean that if the number of IPs somehow associated with connzone hits 16000 everyone gets a 503 and it's all over? How does Nginx decide? The documentation is weirdly vague on this. So, considering the example config, who would actually get a 503 and under which circumstances and how would things go from there? Same with request zones?

  We have a Dell PE2950 file server running Windows 2008, hosting a DFS namespace of ~1.2 TB. This server has two Broadcom 1Gbps NICs teamed together. When there is high traffic going to the server across the network (greater than 200 Mbps), any Windows 7 client accessing a DFS share at the time experiences severe performance problems. For example: Computer A has an AutoCAD drawing opened directly from the DFS share. Performance is normal, not causing any issues. Computer B begins a file transfer, putting a 11GB file onto a different DFS namespace, on the same server Computer A immediately notices lag while using AutoCAD. The cursor momentarily freezes within AutoCAD every 10 seconds or so, and any browsing of the DFS share is extremely slow. Computer B completes file transfer, and performance resumes to normal for Computer A. This is only affecting Windows 7 clients, using a variety of hardware (desktop + laptop). All of our Windows XP clients see no performance impact during the file transfer. Things I have tried with no change: Had Computer A work from an entirely different RAID array from the file transfer destination Updated NIC drivers on clients and server Enabled TCP offload and receive side scaling on the server NIC (previously disabled when the issue began) Antivirus disabled during file transfer I am currently having a user test applications other than AutoCAD when the file transfer occurs, and will update the question with that result. Does anyone have any recommendations for resolution or additional troubleshooting steps?
