• Keyboard lights sometimes stay on after PC is powered off. Why?

  Sometimes when I power off my PC some lights on the keyboard stay on. It's pretty random which ones, though I suspect it has something to do with what lights were on just before the shutdown (if I vigorously follow that they are all off while the PC is shutting down then they stay off). Not that this would change anything, but it is annoying. Why does this happen and how can I avoid it? Added: I know that I can turn off the power completely to my computer and it will go off. That's not the point. Actually, I even want my keyboard to have power, because I use it to turn on my computer (the power button on the case is difficult to reach). I just want the lights to go off. Or at least understand why this happens. Oh, and it's a PS2 keyboard.

  How to stop blanking screen although I am active on Ubuntu Karmic on old IBM Laptop 600E? After some time of working on the machine the screen goes blank. When I hit ESC on the built-in keyboard (not on the attached USB keyboard where I work) it comes back and everything works fine until the next screen-blanking. I suspect it is some power management issue. When I use an old keyboard that has a ps2 connector it does not happen. So my guess is that the usb keyboard does not update the power management timer that detects when the session was last used? I am using fluxbox window manager. I do not want to disable power management because it is nice that the fan only works at the necessary speed (the fan spped is regulated which I can hear) But I could disable power management for testing purposes.

Therefore, for each component, which communication bus is involved and what is the route that data takes from the component to the processor, including; The bus name Whether bus is serial or parallel The name of any bridges involved Also, what is the the role of a bridge The components are: Internal components: Floppy Drive, Hard Drive, CD/DVD Drive, Memory, Processor Power supply, Graphics card & Sound card External devices: Monitor, Keyboard, Mouse (PS2 & USB), Printer, Pen Drive I have absolutely no idea of what the routes are and how motherboards communicate, could someone give me a start here? • Can I tell which installation DVD was used for my Windows XP?

  I have two Windows XP installation DVDs (that came from the OEM with my two laptops). I need to reinstall Windows on one of them but I'm not sure which one is which. Is there any way to tell which DVD was used for each laptop? PS. They both came from the same OEM and there're no distinguishing markings on the DVDs themselves. PS2. The reason for my concern is to avoid installation twice, which may invalidate license for already installed Windows XP on one laptop if I duplicate it to another.

• How can I remove LibUSB on Windows 7?

  I've installed LibUSB, a software that modifies your USB driver so that programs can access it easily. I didn't know that in Windows 7 you have to run it in compatibility mode for Windows XP, so now my Windows 7 can't access any USB port (including keyboard and mouse). Now I can't access my computer at all, and I don't have any PS2 connection in my computer. I tried to run it in Safe Mode but it didn't change anything. I tried to run a system restore from before the installation of LibUSB, but all the restore points give me an error: "The instruction at 0x73888f18 referenced memory at 0x00000004. The memory could not be read." I also tried to run Hiren's Boot CD and remove all the files associated with LibUSB, but that didn't change anything. So how can I remove LibUSB and access my computer again without formatting my hard drive? (I have important things on it)

• Keyboard not responding during boot

  My keyboard just stopped responding during boot. So I cannot go to BIOS or select system which I want to start. It is USB keyboard and it was working before. I borrowed PS2 keyboard and it also isn't working during boot. Lately I have been having problems with hard disk. Once every 2-5 minutes LED was on for 30 seconds and win7 wasn't responsive. I connected disk to another controller on motherboard and seems it is working now. All that suggests that to me that that motherboard is broken. What can I check? Or maybe you have some other suggestions?

• Uninstalling PowerShell 1.0

  I am attempting to standardize our PowerShell deployment and usage across all servers, which involves uninstalling PS1.0/installing PS2.0 on Server 2003 machines. In searching for KB926139 through CMD and Control Panel Add/Remove Programs, it is nowhere to be found. We have KB926141 installed on these servers as the Language Pack update, but no initial Install Update. PowerShell 1.0 is installed on the server and can be found at the default locations (%windir%\System32\WindowsPowerShell\V1.0, %windir%\Syswow64\WindowsPowerShell\V1.0). I would like to avoid deleting the Registry Entry in this situation since it should be pretty simple, any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

  Hi I had a server pc with the following error. \windows\system32\config\system is corrupt or missing As to fix it i replaced the files instructed here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545. Problem solved and I was able to boot up to windows desktop. But now none of the usb ports recognize any of the usb devices such as mouse, keyboard, thumbdrive nada... The usb mouse powers up (the light at the bottom lids up) but no functionality. Has anyone experienced this kind of behaviour any tip is really appreceiated. PS:There is no PS2 ports for both mouse and keyboard. Edit: Same behaviour persists in Safe mode also.

• python: os.system does not execute shell comand

  I need to execute shell command in python program (I have ubuntu). More specifically I want to create graph using graphviz in python script. My code is os.system("dot -Tpng graph.dot -o graph.png") It does not work, but if I just type dot -Tpng graph.dot -o graph.png in command line then everything is fine. Do you know what the problem? Thank you! Edit: Does not work means that nothing happens, there are no errors.   There came a situation where I wanted to work with two JDevelopers simultaneously and start two different applications in two JDEVs. (Both of them have to in separate installation location, else it will create a problem because of system directory).Now, when we want to start WLS in JDEV, only the first one will be started and the other one fails with an exception of port conflict. Until few days back, $1million dollar question was how to change the integrated WLS port number?So, heres the answer after some R&D. In the view menu, click on "Application Server Navigator". Right click on Integrated Weblogic server.1) If it is the first time that you are trying to start the server, then there is a menu "Create Default Domain". If you click on this, a window will be displayed where it asks for the preferred port number. Change it here.2) If the domain is already created, then click on Properties and change the preferred port number.Again, if you want to change the port before starting JDEV from the file system, then goto $JDEV_USER_HOME/systemxxx/o.j2ee and open the file adrs-instances.xml and change the http-port in the startup-preferences:<hash n="startup-preferences">   <value n="http-port" v="7111"/></hash>Note 1: adrs-instances.xml will be created ONLY after you create the default domain.Note 2: systemxxx - refers to system.<JDEV version> like system.11.1.1.3.56.59 for PS2.Note 3: $JDEV_USER_HOME - in windows - would be C:\Documents and Settings\[user_name]\Application Data\JDeveloper"Now, you can run multiple Integrated WLS simultaneously. • Intel graphic chipset and NVIDIA Geforce GTX560

  I have an NVIDIA Geforce GTX560 with two video projectors and I would like to use the onboard Intel Graphic Chipset to plug an additional monitor. I saw the question : How can I use both Intel onboard and Nvidia graphics at the same time? but the answer is so short that I was not convinced. My motherboard (GIGABYTE GA-H61M-D2P-B3 (rev. 1.0)) equipped with Intel H61 Chipset allow shared memory between onboard and PCIe cards. And Windows 7 allow me to use the three outputs thanks to Intel's driver. I'm able to use the onboard graphic card but without graphical interface for now. I think i need intel driver for that. But I would like to know if I can setup my displays in xorg.conf with something like : Section "Device" Identifier "Device0" Driver "intel" EndSection Section "Device" Identifier "Device1" Driver "nvidia" EndSection Section "Device" Identifier "Device2" Driver "nvidia" EndSection Does anyone have successfully setup something like that ? Or should I burn my head experimenting it by myself ? Or is there any good reasons to discouraged me to try ? Thanks for your help. Antoine PS : i'm using Ubuntu 10.10 for now, but I could switch to another version. PS2 : i also read this : Use 3 monitors w/built-in intel adapter + two old nvidia PCI cards on 10.10? which doesn't tell me more about the possibilities to use Intel Graphic and Nvidia at the same time EDIT : according to that : Can not get Dual Monitors to work on Different GPUs, I should be able to run two Xserver one on Intel the other on Nvidia. I will try and post the result here.

• "FOR UPDATE" v/s "LOCK IN SHARE MODE" : Allow concurrent threads to read updated "state" value of locked row

  I have the following scenario: User X logs in to the application from location lc1: call it Ulc1 User X (has been hacked, or some friend of his knows his login credential, or he just logs in from a different browser on his machine,etc.. u got the point) logs in at the same time from location lc2: call it Ulc2 I am using a main servlet which : - gets a connection from database pooling - sets autocommit to false - executes a command that goes through app layers: if all successful, set autocommit to true in a "finally" statement, and closes connection. Else if an exception happens, rollback(). In my database (mysql/innoDb) i have a "history" table, with row columns: id(primary key) |username | date | topic | locked The column "locked" has by default value "false" and it serves as a flag that marks if a specific row is locked or not. Each row is specific to a user (as u can see from the username column) So back to the scenario: --Ulc1 sends the command to update his history from the db for date "D" and topic "T". --Ulc2 sends the same command to update history from the db for the same date "D" and same topic "T" at the exact same time. I want to implement an mysql/innoDB locking system that will enable whichever thread arriving to do the following check: Is column "locked" for this row true or not? if true, return a message to the user that " he is already updating the same data from another location" if not true (ie not locked) : flag it as locked and update then reset locked to false once finished. Which of these two mysql locking techniques, will actually allow the 2nd arriving thread from reading the "updated" value of the locked column to decide wt action to take?Should i use "FOR UPDATE" or "LOCK IN SHARE MODE"? This scenario explains what i want to accomplish: - Ulc1 thread arrives first: column "locked" is false, set it to true and continue updating process - Ulc2 thread arrives while Ulc1's transaction is still in process, and even though the row is locked through innoDb functionalities, it doesn't have to wait but in fact reads the "new" value of column locked which is "true", and so doesn't in fact have to wait till Ulc1 transaction commits to read the value of the "locked" column(anyway by that time the value of this column will already have been reset to false). I am not very experienced with the 2 types of locking mechanisms, what i understand so far is that LOCK IN SHARE MODE allow other transaction to read the locked row while FOR UPDATE doesn't even allow reading. But does this read gets on the updated value? or the 2nd arriving thread has to wait the first thread to commit to then read the value? Any recommendations about which locking mechanism to use for this scenario is appreciated.   OpenSSL documents state that it can safely be used in multi-threaded applications provided that at least two callback functions are set, locking_function and threadid_func.... I've written programs which use OpenSSL API. Moreover, I know how to use pthreads. However, the OpenSSL documents are written in the form of a manual, and I can't see a step-by-step guide on what I have to do when using OpenSSL in a multi-threaded app. Is there a tutorial on using OpenSSL with pthreads? (I searched the web, but no satisfactory result appeared.) PS: I'm working in Debian Lenny & Ubuntu Lucid/Maverick. PS2: OpenSSL includes a sample, but it's far too complicated to start with.

  Hello, I was wondering if there is a library for editing program flow. I refer to conditions if, loops (do, while, for) and other elements that can exist inside a program. What I would like to have is some sort of a CAD application (similar to an UML editor) from where I can take some elements and edit their properties, make connections between them. Do you know similar software that does this, or resembles a little what I'm trying to achieve? Thanks, Iulian PS: It is something that should resemble this image.   I'd like to set my bash prompt to a fixed width, and make up the difference in space before the $, so whether long or short, my prompt remains the same width: [name@host] ~/Directory/Dir...Another/LastDir $ [name@host] ~/Directory(branch) $ Currently, in a short directory path my prompt looks something like this: [name@host] ~/Directory(branch) $ a deeper directory path looks like this: [name@host] ~/Directory/Dir...Another/LastDir $ You can see I've truncated the PWD in the middle so I can see where the path begins, and where it ends. I'd like to make up the difference before the $.
