    I'm having a similar problem as "ruby 1.9 segmentation fault on exit." I followed the solution and updated libselinux with yum and have the following version installed: Package libselinux-2.0.96-6.fc14.1.x86_64 already installed and latest version I am running a RackSpace machine, kernel version: 2.6.35.4-rscloud. My C backtrace is: -- C level backtrace information ------------------------------------------- /usr/local/rvm/rubies/ruby-1.9.3-p0/lib/libruby.so.1.9(+0x18910a) [0x7f3cdb6c010a] vm_dump.c:796 /usr/local/rvm/rubies/ruby-1.9.3-p0/lib/libruby.so.1.9(+0x5eb04) [0x7f3cdb595b04] error.c:258 /usr/local/rvm/rubies/ruby-1.9.3-p0/lib/libruby.so.1.9(rb_bug+0xb8) [0x7f3cdb5969d8] error.c:277 /usr/local/rvm/rubies/ruby-1.9.3-p0/lib/libruby.so.1.9(+0x119865) [0x7f3cdb650865] signal.c:609 /lib64/libpthread.so.0() [0x328540eeb0] /usr/local/rvm/rubies/ruby-1.9.3-p0/lib/libruby.so.1.9(+0x179272) [0x7f3cdb6b0272] ./include/ruby/ruby.h:1306 /usr/local/rvm/rubies/ruby-1.9.3-p0/lib/libruby.so.1.9(+0x17f31b) [0x7f3cdb6b631b] vm.c:1220 /usr/local/rvm/rubies/ruby-1.9.3-p0/lib/libruby.so.1.9(+0x1800d5) [0x7f3cdb6b70d5] vm.c:624 /usr/local/rvm/rubies/ruby-1.9.3-p0/lib/libruby.so.1.9(rb_yield+0x44) [0x7f3cdb6bb274] vm.c:654 /usr/local/rvm/rubies/ruby-1.9.3-p0/lib/libruby.so.1.9(+0xab821) [0x7f3cdb5e2821] numeric.c:3204 /usr/local/rvm/rubies/ruby-1.9.3-p0/lib/libruby.so.1.9(+0x183601) [0x7f3cdb6ba601] vm_insnhelper.c:404 /usr/local/rvm/rubies/ruby-1.9.3-p0/lib/libruby.so.1.9(+0x1792b4) [0x7f3cdb6b02b4] insns.def:1015 /usr/local/rvm/rubies/ruby-1.9.3-p0/lib/libruby.so.1.9(+0x17f31b) [0x7f3cdb6b631b] vm.c:1220 /usr/local/rvm/rubies/ruby-1.9.3-p0/lib/libruby.so.1.9(+0x1800d5) [0x7f3cdb6b70d5] vm.c:624 /usr/local/rvm/rubies/ruby-1.9.3-p0/lib/libruby.so.1.9(rb_yield+0x44) [0x7f3cdb6bb274] vm.c:654 /usr/local/rvm/rubies/ruby-1.9.3-p0/lib/libruby.so.1.9(rb_ary_each+0x54) [0x7f3cdb5622e4] array.c:1478 /usr/local/rvm/rubies/ruby-1.9.3-p0/lib/libruby.so.1.9(+0x183601) [0x7f3cdb6ba601] vm_insnhelper.c:404 /usr/local/rvm/rubies/ruby-1.9.3-p0/lib/libruby.so.1.9(+0x1792b4) [0x7f3cdb6b02b4] insns.def:1015 /usr/local/rvm/rubies/ruby-1.9.3-p0/lib/libruby.so.1.9(+0x17f31b) [0x7f3cdb6b631b] vm.c:1220 /usr/local/rvm/rubies/ruby-1.9.3-p0/lib/libruby.so.1.9(rb_iseq_eval+0x1f0) [0x7f3cdb6bbae0] vm.c:1447 /usr/local/rvm/rubies/ruby-1.9.3-p0/lib/libruby.so.1.9(+0x67bfd) [0x7f3cdb59ebfd] load.c:310 /usr/local/rvm/rubies/ruby-1.9.3-p0/lib/libruby.so.1.9(rb_require_safe+0x6ef) [0x7f3cdb5a02df] load.c:619 /usr/local/rvm/rubies/ruby-1.9.3-p0/lib/libruby.so.1.9(+0x183601) [0x7f3cdb6ba601] vm_insnhelper.c:404 /usr/local/rvm/rubies/ruby-1.9.3-p0/lib/libruby.so.1.9(+0x1792b4) [0x7f3cdb6b02b4] insns.def:1015 /usr/local/rvm/rubies/ruby-1.9.3-p0/lib/libruby.so.1.9(+0x17f31b) [0x7f3cdb6b631b] vm.c:1220 /usr/local/rvm/rubies/ruby-1.9.3-p0/lib/libruby.so.1.9(+0x1800d5) [0x7f3cdb6b70d5] vm.c:624 /usr/local/rvm/rubies/ruby-1.9.3-p0/lib/libruby.so.1.9(rb_yield+0x44) [0x7f3cdb6bb274] vm.c:654 /usr/local/rvm/rubies/ruby-1.9.3-p0/lib/libruby.so.1.9(rb_ary_each+0x54) [0x7f3cdb5622e4] array.c:1478 /usr/local/rvm/rubies/ruby-1.9.3-p0/lib/libruby.so.1.9(+0x183601) [0x7f3cdb6ba601] vm_insnhelper.c:404 /usr/local/rvm/rubies/ruby-1.9.3-p0/lib/libruby.so.1.9(+0x1792b4) [0x7f3cdb6b02b4] insns.def:1015 /usr/local/rvm/rubies/ruby-1.9.3-p0/lib/libruby.so.1.9(+0x17f31b) [0x7f3cdb6b631b] vm.c:1220 /usr/local/rvm/rubies/ruby-1.9.3-p0/lib/libruby.so.1.9(rb_iseq_eval_main+0xaf) [0x7f3cdb6bbbdf] vm.c:1461 /usr/local/rvm/rubies/ruby-1.9.3-p0/lib/libruby.so.1.9(+0x6471a) [0x7f3cdb59b71a] eval.c:204 /usr/local/rvm/rubies/ruby-1.9.3-p0/lib/libruby.so.1.9(ruby_exec_node+0x1d) [0x7f3cdb59c56d] eval.c:251 /usr/local/rvm/rubies/ruby-1.9.3-p0/lib/libruby.so.1.9(ruby_run_node+0x1e) [0x7f3cdb59e60e] eval.c:244 ruby() [0x4008eb] /lib64/libc.so.6(__libc_start_main+0xfd) [0x3284c1ee5d] ruby() [0x4007d9]

  • Advice for someone moving from Windows / Coldfusion / Java to Linux / Ruby / Rails

    - by Ciaran Archer
Hi all I am thinking of undertaking a serious career move. Currently I work day to day with ColdFusion 9+, and some Java in a Windows environment. My background is Java/JSP etc prior to ColdFusion. I'm considering a move towards Ruby / Rails on Linux as I think it would be a real challenge, keep things fresh and would stand me in good stead for the next few years. There are also more jobs in this area. I would consider myself an experienced web professional. I do TDD and I understand good OO design concepts. I have worked for the past few years on a busy transactional gaming website with all the security and performance challenges that entails. I have also contributed to an open source ColdFusion project recently and I am a active member of the CF community on StackOverflow . In order to maintain my current remuneration (!) etc. I would like to get up to speed on Ruby / Rails and Linux before I go job hunting. The idea is that I can demonstrate enough proficiency in these new skills and combined with my other language / programming / architectural and performance experience I have I'll be a good candidate. I am building a personal website in Rails 3.0 on Ubuntu which I hope will expose me to lots of Rails/Ruby and I am reading a few books. What else can I do? Has anyone made this type of move, and if so would they have any tips apart from what I've mentioned? Is there any areas around Rails/Ruby/Linux that I have to get up to speed with? Any and all tips are appreciated.

  • Ruby but not Rails on my Resume

    - by Ken Bloom
I have listed Ruby as a skill on my resume becuase I've been programming in Ruby for 5 years while I work on my Ph.D. thesis. I've mostly been using it to implement natural language processing algorithms. I'm starting to look for a job, and I posted my resume to a few sites (as an extra bonus when applying to certain on-target jobs). Now I get recruiters calling me to offer me Ruby on Rails jobs. The problem is that I've never learned Rails. It was never relevant to what I'm doing for my Ph.D. How do you recommend handling this situation to avoid wasting my time and theirs? (And learning Rails probably isn't an option until I finish my thesis.) Can my resume be adjusted to make this clearer? Should it be adjusted? Should I just politely tell them on the phone that I don't know Rails? By the way, the relevant part of my resume simply says: Skills: Programming Languages: C, C++, Java, Scala, Ruby, LaTeX Databases: MySQL, XML, XPath and lists a few other skill areas that couldn't possibly be confused with a Rails developer.

  • Ruby on Rails / PostgreSQL - Library not Loaded error when starting server- libq.5.dylib

    - by Mike McCoy
I have app that is running Ruby 1.9.2, Rails 3, and postgreSQL 8.3. It was originally setup and working with postgreSQL 9.1, but I uninstalled 9.1 and installed and changed to 8.3 insure compatibility on a Heroku shared database setup. It was running ok, but it's not now Now, when working on this app, when I run a database upgrade I get this error: dlopen(/Users/michaeljmccoy/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.2-p290/gems/pg-0.12.2/lib/pg_ext.bundle, 9): Library not loaded: libpq.5.dylib Referenced from: /Users/michaeljmccoy/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.2-p290/gems/pg-0.12.2/lib/pg_ext.bundle Reason: no suitable image found. However, when I add the path to my .profile file and restart the terminal window, I get the same errors.

  • How to do case-insensitive order in Rails with postgresql

    - by brad
I am in the process of switching my development environment from sqlite3 to postgresql 8.4 and have one last hurdle. In my original I had the following line in a helper method; result = Users.find(:all, :order => "name collate NOCASE") which provided a very nice case-insensitive search. I can't replicate this for postgresql. Should be easy - any ideas? Thanks.

I would like to connect to my Postgres 8.3 database using SSL from my XP client using OpenSSL. This works fine without SSL. When I try it with SSL (no client certificate), I get the error: error:140790E5:SSL routines:SSL23_WRITE:ssl handshake failure I have followed the instructions in the Postgres manual for SSL including creating a self-signed certificate. • Exception with RubyAMF and Ruby 1.9 although code works

    - by Tam
I'm getting an exception with RubyAMF using Ruby 1.9 and Rails 2.3.5. Although code afterward executes normally I'm not very comfortable with seeing such exception in the log file. • Trying to install postgresql:i386 on 12.04 amd64

    - by tim jackson
Due to some legacy 32 bit libraries being used in postgresql functions I need to get a 32 bit install of Postgresql on a 64 bit native system. But it seems like there is a problem with the multiarch not seeing all.debs as satisfying dependencies. uname -a: 3.8.0-29-generic #42-precise-Ubuntu SMP x86_64 dpkg --print-architecture: amd64 dpkg --print-foreign-architecture: i386 apt-get install postgresql-9.1: returns postgresql : Depends: postgresql-9.1 but it is nto going to be installed postgresql-9.1:i386 : Depends: postgresql-common:i386 but it is not installable Depends: ssl-cert:i386 but it is not installable Depends: locales:i386 but it is not installable etc .. But I have installed ssl-cert_1.0.28ubuntu0.1_all.deb and locales_..._all.deb andpostgresql-common is an all.deb Does anyone have experience installing 32 bit packages on 64 bit systems that depend on packages that are all.debs. Or has anyone installed 32 bit postgres on 64 bit? Any help appreciated.

  • Rails application keeps timing out when attempting to connect to Postgresql DB

    - by Corillian
I'm hosting a postgresql database on a small windows azure Ubuntu 13.04 VM with a default postgresql.conf. I have a Rails application running on a medium windows azure Ubuntu 13.04 VM. When accessing the postgresql database the rails application is constantly timing out. In its database.yml I have the connection pool size set to 120 and the timeout set to 15 seconds. Despite this my rails logs are full of the following error message: ActiveRecord::ConnectionTimeoutError: could not obtain a database connection within 5 seconds (waited 5.0023203 seconds). The max pool size is currently 120; consider increasing it. My postgresql.conf has a max connection limit of 120, making it any larger prevents the server from being able to successfully restart. I've also made sure that ssl was off in the postgresql.conf per this article but beyond that I have no idea what's going on. My postgresql logs don't contain any info indicating something is going wrong. My website is getting ~1k hits per day so perhaps a small VM instance just isn't powerful enough? I appreciate any assistance! [Edit1] The postgresql database is in a separate cloud service within the same affinity group. For example: db small VM: mydatabase.cloudapp.net (Affinity Group US East) forums medium VM: myforums.cloudapp.net (Affinity Group US East) On the database server I have opened port 5432. The connection to the database server from the forums server is using its hostname. Is it possible that the DNS resolution is what's taking so long?

Hey guys, New to rails, trying to figure out something simple. Seems as though I cannot migrate a very simple mysql database using "rake db:migrate" command. Here is the issue: I know rails defaults to sqllite right now, but I need to use mysql for a series of reasons. • Migrate from MySQL to PostgreSQL on Linux (Kubuntu)

    - by Dave Jarvis
Storyline Trying to migrate a database from MySQL to PostgreSQL. All the documentation I have read covers, in great detail, how to migrate the structure. I have found very little documentation on migrating the data. The schema has 13 tables (which have been migrated successfully) and 9 GB of data. MySQL version: 5.1.x PostgreSQL version: 8.4.x I want to use the R programming language to analyze the data using SQL select statements; PostgreSQL has PL/R, but MySQL has nothing (as far as I can tell). A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away... Create the database location (/var has insufficient space; also dislike having the PostgreSQL version number everywhere -- upgrading would break scripts!): sudo mkdir -p /home/postgres/main sudo cp -Rp /var/lib/postgresql/8.4/main /home/postgres sudo chown -R postgres.postgres /home/postgres sudo chmod -R 700 /home/postgres sudo usermod -d /home/postgres/ postgres All good to here. Next, restart the server and configure the database using these installation instructions: sudo apt-get install postgresql pgadmin3 sudo /etc/init.d/postgresql-8.4 stop sudo vi /etc/postgresql/8.4/main/postgresql.conf Change data_directory to /home/postgres/main sudo /etc/init.d/postgresql-8.4 start sudo -u postgres psql postgres \password postgres sudo -u postgres createdb climate pgadmin3 Use pgadmin3 to configure the database and create a schema. A New Hope The episode began in a remote shell known as bash, with both databases running, and the installation of a command with a most unusual logo: SQL Fairy. perl Makefile.PL sudo make install sudo apt-get install perl-doc (strangely, it is not called perldoc) perldoc SQL::Translator::Manual Extract a PostgreSQL-friendly DDL and all the MySQL data: sqlt -f DBI --dsn dbi:mysql:climate --db-user user --db-password password -t PostgreSQL > climate-pg-ddl.sql mysqldump --skip-add-locks --complete-insert --no-create-db --no-create-info --quick --result-file="climate-my.sql" --databases climate --skip-comments -u root -p The Database Strikes Back Recreate the structure in PostgreSQL as follows: pgadmin3 (switch to it) Click the Execute arbitrary SQL queries icon Open climate-pg-ddl.sql Search for TABLE " replace with TABLE climate." (insert the schema name climate) Search for on " replace with on climate." (insert the schema name climate) Press F5 to execute This results in: Query returned successfully with no result in 122 ms. Replies of the Jedi At this point I am stumped. Where do I go from here (what are the steps) to convert climate-my.sql to climate-pg.sql so that they can be executed against PostgreSQL? How to I make sure the indexes are copied over correctly (to maintain referential integrity; I don't have constraints at the moment to ease the transition)? How do I ensure that adding new rows in PostgreSQL will start enumerating from the index of the last row inserted (and not conflict with an existing primary key from the sequence)? Resources A fair bit of information was needed to get this far: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/PostgreSQL http://articles.sitepoint.com/article/site-mysql-postgresql-1 http://wiki.postgresql.org/wiki/Converting_from_other_Databases_to_PostgreSQL#MySQL http://pgfoundry.org/frs/shownotes.php?release_id=810 http://sqlfairy.sourceforge.net/ Thank you!

  • I'm a student learning C++ and I've recently found out about Ruby. Would learning (some of) Ruby help me with C++ or would it just confuse me?

    - by Von32
Hi! As the title says, I'm a student that will be starting my second year of C++ very soon. I've discovered Ruby, however. While I've heard much buzz about the language before, I've disregarded it because I always thought it wasn't something that would be useful. However, I've found a number of FANTASTIC tutorials on ruby and am interested in learning it (probably because it seems so straightforward). Would playing around with ruby be a good or bad idea? I understand that there's not such thing as bad knowledge, but I'm afraid that Ruby will only confuse me when dealing with C++. How different from C++ is it? I've read it's based on C in some way, but my google-fu seems to be horrible today. How useful is Ruby in the real world? I'm not specifically asking about jobs- I'm more interested in what sort of applications may come from this language. Any specific examples worth looking at? Going back to Question two- I've read some posts on here that Ruby and C++ can hold hands once in a while. How flexible is this relationship? Is it rarely that this would work? Thank you Very much for your time! EDIT: This has to be the one community on the internet that doesn't suck. Why have I never posted before? You guys are awesome!

  • Combine 3 select fields and validate as one in my User model in ruby on rails 3

    - by Psychonetics
Ok I have 3 select boxes for selecting date of birth. I have constants setup in my User model to provide months, years etc.. Anyway I can successfully validate these select boxes separately. What I want to do is combine the :day, :month and :year and store in :birthday and validate the whole date as one so I can return 1 error rather than 3 separate ones. Also doing this will make it easier to store the validated date in my birthday field in my database. Part of my form <td> <%= f.input :day, :required => false, :label => "Birthday: " , :prompt => "Day", :collection => User::DAYS %></td> <td> <%= f.input :month, :label => false, :prompt => "Month", :collection => User::MONTHS %> </td> <td> <%= f.input :year, :label => false, :prompt => "Year", :collection => User::YEAR_RANGE %> </td> Part of User model MONTHS = ["January", 1], ["February", 2], ["March", 3], ["April", 4], ["May", 5], ["June", 6], ["July", 7], ["August", 8], ["September", 9], ["October", 10], ["November", 11], ["December", 12] # finish this DAYS = 1..31 # finish this START_YEAR = Time.now.year - 106 END_YEAR = Time.now.year YEAR_RANGE = START_YEAR..END_YEAR class User < ActiveRecord::Base attr_accessor :day, :month, :year validates_presence_of :day, :message = 'What day in a month was you born?' validates_presence_of :month, :message = 'What month was you born?' validates_presence_of :year, :message = 'What is your year of birth?' end

  • Ruby Shoes for non-trivial apps

    - by marcof
I've been taking a look at Ruby Shoes for GUI development with Ruby. So far, it's been a pretty good experience for making simple apps. However, I am quite worried about being able to write large scale applications with it. For example, how would I go about using MVP pattern with this framework ? For now, I have not been able to not make presentation concerns leak into the view because of the lack of some kind of "data binding". I have code that looks like this : Shoes.app do @view = SampleView.new @presenter = SamplePresenter.new @view @label = para @view.sample_property button "Update sample_property" do @presenter.update_sample_property end end Here, the call to @presenter.update_sample_property updates @view.sample_property but the label is not updated accordingly. For this to work, I would have to make @presenter.update_sample_property to return a string, and then call @label.text = return_value, but I think that would violate the MVP principle of not having presentation logic in the view. I'm used to work in .Net with the MVP pattern so I don't know if the pattern applies correctly to Shoes like I tried to do. Are there any ressources out there for making non-trivial apps with Shoes ? Especially using the MVP pattern or something similar ? EDIT : I took a look at the shoebox to see what other people have achieved with the framework. Though I did not look through it extensively, at first sight it seems like they are all simple projects with no real purposes.

OO'yness. Is everything an object that gets send messages? Different paradign? syntax - anything like jslint for checking for well-formed code?

  • Moving away from .Net to Ruby and coping without intellisense

    - by user460667
I am in the process of trying to learn Ruby, however after spending nearly 10 years in the MS stack I am struggling to get by without intellisense. I've given RubyMine a try which does help however ideally I would like to go free which would mean no RubyMine. How have other people leant to cope with remembering everything instead of relying on Ctrl-Space? Any advice is appreciated as at the moment I am feeling very stupid (no jokes about MS devs please ;)) Thanks
