• Google Author information in search results still havent displayed my details in search results

  I followed the following instructions but still not clear whether i had completely understood it. http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?answer=1408986 http://www.labnol.org/internet/author-profile-in-google/19775/ I did the above last week and i did not find my picture in google search result. First i added google + link in certain web pages and in my google profile i added those pages which had google + anchor link with rel=author tag. After updating i used the following to verify. http://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/richsnippets?url=http%3A%2F%2Fvikku.info%2Fcodesnippets%2Fphp%2F&view= You can see that my pic is appearing at the right. here is a screen shot. so, what am i missing? why it is not in the search result. The author of labnol.org said it will take 3 days for my profile photo link to appear... ?   I wrote a code to find the position in google search result for a search keyword. I also did the same with the browser. Both the results are different. Let me explain in detail here. I have a website and i wanted to know on which page number my domain appears for a search string. Like when i search for 'code snippets' i wanted to find in google search on which page number a certain domain appears. I wrote a php code to search page by page starting from page 1 to page n. I did the same task using a browser. The script returned page 4 and when browsed i can see the domain appearing in second page. here is the search string i use in my code. /search?hl=en&output=search&sclient=psy-ab&q=code+snippets&start=0&btnG= and for each request i change the start=0 to start=1, start=2, etc... and in the response i will check whether my domain appears in it. any idea for this different in search results?

One of the most basic SEO techiniques is including accurate description below 64 characters in the tags of each page. I was wondering if is considered ethical SEO to set up the contents based on a search keyword for example. So if the user searches for 'apples pictures' for example, then the title of the webpage would be 'apple pictures'. Note that the search keywords accurately describe my website contents because the title will always relate to the body of the webpage and 85-90% of the terms searched for will return corresponding results. Is this considered a good seo practice and is it ethical? Also, can someone explain what the idea is behind "linking"? I read somewhere that it is a good seo practice to link other websites and it is good when other websites link you. Does this mean that I should include as many links to other websites as possible (that are somehow relevant to my websites goal), also if I joined forums/services and posted my website url in the signature, would that still be considered other websites linking me?

• Search engine solution for Django that actually works?

  The story so far: Decided to go with Xapian as search backend because it has all search-engine features I was looking for, knows about Unicode, stemming, has few dependencies and requires no bloated app-server installation on top of it. Tried Django and Haystack (plus xapian-haystack, the backend glue code to tie Haystack to Xapian) because it was advertised on quite some blogs as "working". Did not work. Neither django-haystack nor the xapian-haystack project provide a version combination that actually works together. MASTER from both projects yields an error from Xapian, so it's not stable at all. Haystack 1.0.1 and xapian-haystack 1.0.x/1.1.0 are not API-compatible. Plus, in a minimally working installation of Haystack 1.0.1 and xapian-haystack MASTER, any complex query yields zero results due to errors in either django-haystack or xapian-haystack (I double-verified this), maybe because the unit-tests actually test very simple cases, and no edge-cases at all. Tried Djapian. The source-code is riddled with spelling errors (mind you, in variable names, not comments), documentation is also riddled with ambiguities and outdated information that will never lead to a working installation. Not surprisingly, users rarely ask for features but how to get it working in the first place. Next on the plate: exploring Solr (installing a Java environment plus Tomcat gives me headaches, the machine is RAM- and CPU-constrained), or Lucene (slightly less headaches, but still). Before I proceed spending more time with a solution that might or might not work as advertised, I'd like to know: Did anyone ever get an actual, real-world search solution working in Django? I'm serious. I find it really frustrating reading about "large problems mostly solved", and then realizing that you will never get a working installation from the source-code because, actually, all bloggers dealing with those "mostly solved problems" never went past basic installation and copy-pasting the official tutorials. So here are the requirements: must be able to search for 10-100 terms in one query must handle + (term must be present) and - (term must not be present), AND/OR must handle arbitrary grouping (i.e. parentheses around AND/OR) must allow for Django-ORM filtering before or after fulltext-search (i.e. pre-/post-processing of results with the full set of filters that Django knows about) alternatively, there must be a facility to bulk-fetch the result set and transform it into a QuerySet should be light on the machine, so preferably no humongous JVM and Java-based app-server installation Is there anything out there that does this? I'm not interested in anecdotal evidence, or references to some blog posts that claim it should be working. I'd like to hear from someone who actually has a fully-functional setup working in the real world, under real conditions, with real queries. EDIT: Let me repeat again that I'm not so much interested in anecdotal evidence that someone, somewhere has a somewhat running installation working with unspecified properties. I already went there, I read all the blog posts, mailing lists, I contacted the authors, but when it came to actual implementation of real-world scenarios, nothing ever worked as advertised. Also, and a user below brought that point up as well, considering the TCO of any project, I'm definitely not interested in hearing that someone, somewhere was able to pull it off once a vendor parachuted in an unknown number of specialists to monkey-patch the whole installation with specific domain-knowledge that's documented nowhere. So, please, if you claim you have a working installation that actually satisfies minimum requirements for a full-fledged search (see requirements above), please provide the following so that we can all benefit from a search solution for Django that actually solves the problem: exact Linux distribution, release version, exact release version of Haystack (or equivalent) and release version of search backend, exact release version of the search engine publicly (!) available documentation how to set up all components exactly in the way that your installation was set up such that the minimal requirements above are met.   The problem I am working on an aggregation website that collects reviews about specific products from various websites. The site has many thousands of outbound links (with "nofollow" attributes) to the content source websites where the reviews were collected from. The site has far more outbound links than inbound links and I have read that this is bad for SEO. The question Would adding an intermediate «You are leaving this site» disclaimer/warning page like this hurt search engine rankings? And can you provide any links about this topic? p.s. The exit page would be a POST form instead of a script, that notifies the user that he/she is leaving this site and provides a button to continue to the other website. p.p.s This kind of idea is implemented on many forums, aggregation websites with the purpose of warning the user that he/she is leaving this site and to block search engine bots from following those links because search bots do not submit forms.

• Does your company name in an article title damage Search Engine relevance

  I've been wondering about this for a while but never come across a solid answer. Many websites include their name in all the title tags of their articles. This is often apparent in word-press blogs etc. eg: Tsunami hits Japan and leaves thousands homeless | My Website Name The issue I have is that Search engines strip the stop words out of this sentence to leave the words in which it compares to the body text. So if I want my article to rank well and be relevant, in this case about the terrible Tsunami that has recently struck Japan what is to STOP the MY WEBSITE NAME section of the title de-valuing the relevance of the article. Am I over-worrying? Or should I take this in to consideration? Thanks for advice in advance.

The domain is over 10 years old, approximately 10 thousand indexed pages, and the planned addition is approx. 30K new pages. Any idea how we should go about it? Must we schedule a gradual data release? Have you heard of any industry standards as to how many new pages per day / week / month should be added in order to appear natural and not get in trouble with Google? I.e. should we plan a bi-weekly addition of 5K?

• Are SharePoint site templates really less performant than site definitions?

  So, it seems in the SharePoint blogosphere that everybody just copies and pastes the same bullet points from other blogs. One bullet point I've seen is that SharePoint site templates are less performant than site definitions because site definitions are stored on the file system. Is that true? It seems odd that site templates would be less performant. It's my understanding that all site content lives in a database, whether you use a site template or a site definition. A site template is applied once to the database, and from then on the site should not care if the content was created using a site template or not. So, does anybody have an architectural reason why a site template would be less performant than a site definition? Edit: Links to the blogs that say there is a performance difference: From MSDN: Because it is slow to store templates in and retrieve them from the database, site templates can result in slower performance. From DevX: However, user templates in SharePoint can lead to performance problems and may not be the best approach if you're trying to create a set of reusable templates for an entire organization. Templates in the database are compiled and executed every time a page is rendered. From Branding SharePoint:Custom site definitions hold the following advantages over custom templates: Data is stored directly on the Web servers, so performance is typically better. At a minimum, I think the above articles are incomplete, and I think several are misleading based on what I know of SharePoints architecture. I read another blog post that argued against the performance differences, but I can't find the link.

When I want to search a network drive, I get the following message: This folder is not indexed. To search this directory plase use Search Companion or add this directory to your index via options. Basically, I have two questions. Is there some way that I can use the indexed search where appropriate and then have it switch over to the Search Companion automatically? Second, how does a programmer look at this code and think this is a good idea? I realize that this question is rhetorical. However, I must enter my search string into one search, receive the error, and then click "Search Companion" to bring up the new search window. This window doesn't even take the defaults from the previous one so I have to specify the search string and drive again.

• ClearOS - how to create a site to site VPN between two ClearOS boxes?

  I plan on setting up some ClearOS boxes at several sites, and would like to set up site-to-site VPN between the remote sites and a main site (all running ClearOS enterprise 5.2sp1 / latest version). I have found references for how to set up ClearOS to VPN in to devices such as cisco for IPSEC, and others with PPTP. But for these methods it did not mention how you might configure 2 ClearOS boxes to talk to each other ipsec or pptp. I also saw documentation on installing OpenVPN and using the OpenVPN client software to VPN in to the ClearOS box. I will probably use this for individual users to VPN in, but I have some small sites ( 1 to 10 users) that will have their own ClearOS box and need to create a site to site VPN link back to the main site's OpenVPN box. Is this possible, can you point me to docs, or other info or basically, how? A couple updates: I did find a thread that asks the same basic question, where the user has a vpn set up between the two clearos machines (after installing ipsec vpn modules), just not transporting traffic between the LANS - and the very last post claims you have to edit some files (/etc/ipsec.conf) and set leftnexthop rightnexthop values to %direct. After that, it's supposed to work. Could it be that simple? I also posted to clear foundation, and they pointed me to some documentation for setting up ipsec unmanaged vpn. This looks pretty good, but, I will most likely need to figure out how to handle a dynamic dns type setup at least on one end. Also, what does it mean by multi-wan? Finally, what happens when a vpn connection goes down exactly - someone has to reboot the box or ?

• I have a very long and repetitive python path, where do I look to correct this?

  I know it is probably not necessary to paste the whole path, but just for the record I have done so below. Whenever I run a python command, it takes a long time to load this path I suppose. I need it to be able to work with LINQ, because I want to add additional where clauses to the final query that gets run. I am looking for the best open source .NET search engine that works with LINQ. I like lucene.net but the problem is the LINQ interface (LINQ to Lucene) hasn't been updated since 2008. Are there any good options out there?

• How should I handle search engines auto-correcting the spelling of a site's name?

  A client's site and company is called 'Tranin Communications' (Tranin is her last name). It ranks well in searches for her name but rather poorly in searches for the name of her site/company. I realized that this is largely due to* search engines (Google especially) assuming that the query was misspelled and automatically including results for both 'train communications' and 'communications training'. Both of those queries yield many high-ranking sites that completely drown out hers. Sometimes Google even shows results for 'communications training' instead of 'tranin communications', hiding her site altogether. Is there a way to report an incorrect auto-correction to Google or something I can do to discourage this behavior (e.g. a meta tag)? My searches have come up cold, any suggestions would be appreciated. *I've come to this conclusion because her site ranks very highly when the same queries are put in quotes.

• Why google isn't updating my site title in search results? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Google doesn't seem to update the description or title of my homepage I had my domain for few days before I uploaded site to it, and it had one title, and then when I uploaded content it should get new title, but with my misunderstanding of WordPress it had blocked robots.txt and keyword with no-index and no-follow. But I removed that like 7 days ago, and I see in reports that Google bot is crawling over my site, but my site title isn't updating, it still has old domain title when site wasn't there... My robots.txt has now: User-agent: * Allow: / I have clear title tag on every page. How long does it take to update? Do I need to check something else?

• cant access site intermittent as i get site not available

  i have a news site i check stuff for regularly.. once in a while i cant access it completely from my 5 different browsers and even from the command line, nslookup cant resolve, ping and tracert fails.. all not being able to resolve site name..the problem is specific to this.. i am told by the site support person that problem is that its cache on my machine or on ISP and I say thats not true because this site I access it 1-2-3 times a week from one browser only.. i only fire up the other ones in times of trouble..and when i have the problem even if i try on my secondary machines i still get the same problems.. when problem goes away all works well.... question is whats causing the intermittent dns/http problems... i don't believe this is something to do with my machine because probe disappears without me having done anything at all.

• How can I forward ALL traffic over a site-to-site VPN on Cisco ASA?

  Hi There, I currently have two Cisco ASA 5100 routers. They are at different physical sites and are configured with a site-to-site VPN which is active and working. I can communicate with the subnets on either site from the other and both are connected to the internet, however I need to ensure that all the traffic at my remote site goes through this VPN to my site here. I know that the web traffic is doing so as a "tracert" confirms this, but I need to ensure that all other network traffic is being directed over this VPN to my network here. • Transform Search String into FullText Compatible Search String?

  I'm working with the fulltext search engine of MSSQL 2008 which expects a search string like this: ("keyword1" AND "keyword2*" OR "keyword3") My users are entering things like this: engine 2009 "san francisco" hotel december xyz stuff* "in miami" 1234 something or "something else" I'm trying to transform these into fulltext engine compatible strings like these: ("engine" AND "2009") ("san francisco" AND "hotel" AND "december" AND "xyz") ("stuff*" "in miami" "1234") ("something" OR "something else") I have a really difficult time with this, tried doing it using counting quotation marks, spaces and inserting etc. but my code looks like horrible for-and-if vomit. Can someone help?

• Search predictions broken in Chrome - reinstall didn't solve the problem

  I recently changed the default search engine to a custom google search URL (using baseUrl) with some additional parameters and removed all the rest of the search engines, and since then, the search predictions stopped working. I even tried to reinstall Chrome but as soon as I resync, the problem is back! Search predictions are just gone without option to fix!! In IE changing the search provider allows specifying a prediction (suggestion) provider, In chrome, once you change the default search engine, you'll never be able to have predictions again!! This is a terrible bug, I mean WTF!!! Is there any workaround to that? I posted a bug report a while ago but it seems no one looks at it. I'm about to give up on Chrome and go back to IE, the only good thing about Chrome is the Extension market and the AdBlocker (which I can find in IE as well). The perfrormance changes don't matter to me too much. Thanks

• Remote site AD design (2003)

  A remote site has about 25 of our 50-ish employees. They have their own AD domain presently (2003) but I want to look at getting them onto the same global domain for ease of access/administration. The remote site has a VPN link but line speeds are very poor. I am already aware of tools like ADMT and have done a few migrations in the past (NT/2003 domains), but this is the first time I have the luxury of designing how this domain is organised. So I'm looking for tips on good AD design; would a remote site be better served as a sub-domain? would this reduce traffic? I am only currently looking at 2003 since only existing machine will be used.

• Site to site VPN using RRAS from an untrusted network?

  Our remote office will be moving to a new space where internet will be provided. They'll be behind a router doing NAT (I do not have admin rights to this router). They will be sharing a printer with the other people on the LAN, but will need VPN to our network for email and file shares. I was thinking of just having them run the windows VPN client and connecting via PPTP like they do when they are off-site, but I have read that multiple PPTP connections from the same NAT'd address to the same destination doesn't work well or at all. I am thinking some kind of site-to-site VPN is needed so there is just one tunnel. Can I just put in a VPN gateway, set it to connect to our RRAS/PPTP server, and have them use it as their default gateway? Perhaps even use the local default gateway for internet traffic. If so, what VPN gateway/device is recommended for this? Or other solutions? Thanks.
