  • C string question

    - by user208454
    I am writing a simple c program which reverses a string, taking the string from argv[1]. Here is the code: #include <stdio.h> #include <stdlib.h> #include <string.h> char* flip_string(char *string){ int i = strlen(string); int j = 0; // Doesn't really matter all I wanted was the same size string for temp. char* temp = string; puts("This is the original string"); puts(string); puts("This is the \"temp\" string"); puts(temp); for(i; i>=0; i--){ temp[j] = string[i] if (j <= strlen(string)) { j++; } } return(temp); } int main(int argc, char *argv[]){ puts(flip_string(argv[1])); printf("This is the end of the program\n"); } That's basically it, the program compiles and everything but does not return the temp string in the end (just blank space). In the beginning it prints temp fine when its equal to string. Furthermore if I do a character by character printf of temp in the for loop the correct temp string in printed i.e. string - reversed. just when I try to print it to standard out (after the for loop/ or in the main) nothing happens only blank space is printed.

  • Raw socket sendto() failure in OS X

    - by user37278
    When I open a raw socket is OS X, construct my own udp packet (headers and data), and call sendto(), I get the error "Invalid Argument". Here is a sample program "rawudp.c" from the web site http://www.tenouk.com/Module43a.html that demonstrates this problem. The program (after adding string and stdlib #includes) runs under Fedora 10 but fails with "Invalid Argument" under OS X. Can anyone suggest why this fails in OS X? I have looked and looked and looked at the sendto() call, but all the parameters look good. I'm running the code as root, etc. Is there perhaps a kernel setting that prevents even uid 0 executables from sending packets through raw sockets in OS X Snow Leopard? Thanks.

  • LLVM-3.1 libLLVMSupport.a undefined reference to `dladdr'

    - by user91387
    I'm trying to compile using the llvm-3.1 package. I'm running 12.04 x64 (3.2.0-26 kernel) && 12.10 (3.5.0-4) x64 backported llvm-3.1 from quantal, then debian experimental. Next I tried 12.10 with the native ubuntu llvm-3.1 package; this failed as well. user@system:/tmp/llvm-test# make compiling cpp yacc file: decaf-llvm.y output file: decaf-llvm bison -b decaf-llvm -d decaf-llvm.y /bin/mv -f decaf-llvm.tab.c decaf-llvm.tab.cc flex -odecaf-llvm.lex.cc decaf-llvm.lex g++ -o ./decaf-llvm decaf-llvm.tab.cc decaf-llvm.lex.cc decaf-stdlib.c `llvm-config --cppflags --ldflags --libs core jit native` -ly -ll /usr/lib/llvm-3.1/lib/libLLVMSupport.a(Signals.o): In function `PrintStackTrace(void*)': (.text+0x6c): undefined reference to `dladdr' /usr/lib/llvm-3.1/lib/libLLVMSupport.a(Signals.o): In function `PrintStackTrace(void*)': (.text+0x18f): undefined reference to `dladdr' collect2: error: ld returned 1 exit status make: *** [decaf-llvm] Error 1 I know the code works as I've run it in centos fine using llvm-3.1-6.fc18(rpm) Google was a bit helpful with this: "On some systems, incluning Ubuntu 11.10, linking may fail with message that libLLVMSupport.a in function PrintStackTrace(void*) has undefined reference to dladdr." "Workaround is to compile LLVM with cmake specifying the following variable: -DCMAKE_EXE_LINKER_FLAGS=-ldl" http://svn.dsource.org/projects/bindings/trunk/llvm-3.0/Readme I double checked y ldflags and everything seems ok. user@system:/llvm-config --ldflags -L/usr/lib/llvm-3.1/lib -lpthread -lffi -ldl -lm I'm unclear of what to do next; any suggestions?

  • C printf not working on ubuntu 13.10 terminal

    - by Blaze Tama
    First, im new in ubuntu so please bear with me. I need to create a C based program for a course in my university. I was using opensuse and its konsole when i was in the university's lab. So basically i need to install opensuse on my system or using a vmware. But i feel lazy to do that, so i tried to run it on my ubuntu instead of opensuse. However, no C code seems working on ubuntu's terminal. The compiling is success, but its not running, or at least the printf is not running. This is my code, a very very simple one : #include<stdio.h> #include<unistd.h> #include<stdlib.h> int main() { printf("test"); return 0; } When i compile it with gcc test.c -o test everything work fine and i get an executeable file. Then i try to run it by ./test, but the printf is not printed. No error or warning was shown. Am i missing something? Note : my gcc is the new one, it should has no problem. Thanks for your help :D

  • Allocating memory inside a function and returning it back

    - by user2651062
    I want to pass a pointer to my function and allocate the memory to which this pointer points. I've read in other posts that I should pass a double pointer to this function and I did so, but I keep getting segmentation fault: #include <iostream> #include <stdlib.h> using namespace std; void allocate(unsigned char** t) { *t=(unsigned char*)malloc(3*sizeof(unsigned char)); if(*t == NULL) cout<<"Allcoation failed"<<endl; else for(int m=0;m<3;m++) *(t[m])=0; } int main() { unsigned char* t; allocate(&t); cout<<t[0]<<" "<<t[1]<<endl; return 0; } the result is always this: Segmentation fault (core dumped) I don't think that there's anything missing from this code. What could be wrong?

  • C Programming matrix

    - by Bilal Khan
    In this program the user enters the # of columns of the matrix and then the entries of the matrix. So, for example, if the user enters 2 for column # and 1 2 3 4 for entries then the program develops a 2 by 2 matrix with 1 2 3 4 as entries. My program works perfectly in such a case. However, if the user for example had only entered 1 2 3 then my program makes a matrix with garbage values. I would like the program in such a case to exit the program. It is a simple question, but it has me baffled. #include<stdio.h> #include<stdlib.h> int main() { int m,x, n, c = 0, d,k, matrix[10][10], transpose[10][10], product[10][10]; printf("Enter the number of columns of matrix "); scanf("%d",&m); if(m<=0){ printf("You entered a invalid value."); exit(0); } else{ printf("Enter the elements of matrix \n"); for( c = 0 ; c < 10 ; c++ ) { for( d = 0 ; d < m ; d++ ) { scanf("%d",&matrix[c][d]); if (matrix[c][d] == 99) // 'x' is character variable I declared to use as a break break; // c = c+1; } if (matrix[c][d] == 99) break; } } printf("\nHere is your matrix:\n"); int i; for(i=0;i<c;i++) { for(d=0;d<m;d++) { printf("%3d ",matrix[i][d]); } printf("\n"); }

  • Puppet yum repo - Pull down 2.7.x vs 3.0.x

    - by Mike Purcell
    So a few weeks ago I started on the path to using puppet to automate all the configs/services. At the time I was using the EPEL repo, which installed version 2.6.x. After some reading I was trying to gain access to the flatten method available via the puppet stdlib, and thought it was available by default in the newer 2.7.x version. So I added a puppet repo with the following settings: [puppetlabs] name=Puppet Labs Packages baseurl=http://yum.puppetlabs.com/el/$releasever/products/$basearch/ enabled=1 gpgcheck=1 gpgkey=http://yum.puppetlabs.com/RPM-GPG-KEY-puppetlabs The problem with this, is it installed v3.0.x instead of 2.7.x. And apparently 3.0.x is a major upgrade which was released only a few weeks ago. Obviously I would prefer to use the 2.7.x for the next few months while PuppetLabs fix any defects which will inevitably arise after a major version. So my question is, what setting can I add to the puppet repo config to pull down only the 2.7.x branch and not the 3.0.x branch?

  • Parsing mathematical experssions with two values that have parenthesis and minus signs

    - by user45921
    I'm trying to parse equations like these which only has two values or the square root of a certain value from a text file: 100+100 -100-100 -(100)+(-100) sqrt(100) by the minues signs, parenthesis and the operator symbol in the middle and the square root, and I have no idea how to start off... I've got the file part done and the simple calculation parts except that I couldnt get my program to solve the equations in the above. #include <stdio.h> #include <string.h> #include <stdlib.h> #include <math.h> main(){ FILE *fp; char buff[255], sym,sym2,del1,del2,del3,del4; double num1, num2; int ret; fp = fopen("input.txt","r"); while(fgets(buff,sizeof(buff),fp)!=NULL){ char *tok = buff; sscanf(tok,"%lf%c%lf",&num1,&sym,&num2); switch(sym){ case '+': printf("%lf\n", num1+num2); break; case '-': printf("%lf\n", num1-num2); break; case '*': printf("%lf\n", num1*num2); break; case '/': printf("%lf\n", num1/num2); break; default: printf("The input value is not correct\n"); break; } } fclose(fp); } that is what have I written for the other basic operations without parenthesis and the minus sign for the second value and it works great for the simple ones. I'm using a switch method to calculate the add, sub, mul and divide but I'm not sure how to properly use the sscanf function (if I am not using it properly) or if there is another way using a function like strtok to properly parse the parenthesis and the minus signs. Any kind help?

  • Pointers inside a structure [on hold]

I mean the pointers should not be initialized ? And if it is not ok, why compile it without errors?

  • strlen returns incorrect value when called in gdb

    - by alesplin
    So I'm noticing some severely incorrect behavior from calls to standard library functions inside GDB. I have the following program to illustrate: #include <stdio.h> #include <stdlib.h> #include <string.h> int main(int argc, char *argv[]) { char *s1 = "test"; char *s2 = calloc(strlen("test")+1,sizeof(char)); snprintf(s2,strlen("test")+1,"test"); printf("string constant: %lu\n", strlen(s1)); printf("allocated string: %lu\n", strlen(s2)); free(s2); return 0; } When run from the command-line, this program outputs just what you'd expect: string constant: 4 allocated string: 4 However, in GDB, I get the following, incorrect output from calls to strlen(): (gdb) p strlen(s1) $1 = -938856896 (gdb) p strlen(s2) $2 = -938856896 I'm pretty sure this is a problem with glibc shipped with Ubuntu (I'm using 10.10), but this is a serious problem for those of us who spend lots of time in GDB. Is anyone else experiencing this kind of error? What's the best way to fix it? Build glibc from source? (I'm already running a version of GDB built from source)

  • Man pages in Linux

    - by Ayos
    I don't seem to have all the man pages that I need. For example, my college computers (running Fedora 14) have man pages for ASCII, all the standard C libraries (stdlib.h, stdio.h) and so on and so forth. I wish to "install" these pages, after looking up on the Internet I couldn't really find anything that made sense. How can I get, say, the man-page of ASCII (I know it's not really a command or a daemon or anything like that, but typing man ASCII on the college computer gets me a page with the ASCII value table + a little more information). I don't want to keep using the Internet for looking up man pages every time I need to look up a function, function prototype or the ASCII table or something like that.

  • Please help me debug this little C program on dynamic two-dimensional array? [migrated]

    I am a newbie here. I have written a little C program, which is to create a two-dimensional matrix. Here is the code: #include <stdio.h> #include <stdlib.h> int **CreatMatrix(int m,int n){ int **Matrix; int i; Matrix=(int**)malloc(m*sizeof(int*)); for(i=0;i<m;i++){ Matrix[i]=(int*)malloc(n*sizeof(int)); } return Matrix; } int main(){ int m,n; int **A; printf("Please input the size of the Matrix: "); scanf("%d%d",&m,&n); A=CreatMatrix(m,n); printf("Please input the entries of the Matrix, which should be integers!\n"); int i,j; for(i=0;i<m;i++){ for(j=0;j<n;j++){ scanf("%d",&A[i][j]); } } printf("The Matrix that you input is:\n"); for(i=0;i<m;i++){ for(j=0;j<n;j++){ printf("%3d ",A[i][j]); } printf("\n"); } for(i=0;i<m;i++) free(A[i]); free(A); } I have run it, and it works fine. But I am not sure if it is right? Can anyone help me debug it?

  • Socket in C: recv overwrite a char[]

    Hi all, I'm trying to make a little client-server script like many others that I've done in the past. But in this one I have a problem. It is better if I post the code and the output it give me. • c - dereferencing issue

    - by Joe
    Hi, I have simplified an issue that I've been having trying to isolate the problem, but it is not helping. I have a 2 dimensional char array to represent memory. I want to pass a reference to that simulation of memory to a function. In the function to test the contents of the memory I just want to iterate through the memory and print out the contents on each row. The program prints out the first row and then I get seg fault. My program is as follows: #include <stdio.h> #include <stdlib.h> #include <ctype.h> #include <string.h> void test_memory(char*** memory_ref) { int i; for(i = 0; i < 3; i++) { printf("%s\n", *memory_ref[i]); } } int main() { char** memory; int i; memory = calloc(sizeof(char*), 20); for(i = 0; i < 20; i++) { memory[i] = calloc(sizeof(char), 33); } memory[0] = "Mem 0"; memory[1] = "Mem 1"; memory[2] = "Mem 2"; printf("memory[1] = %s\n", memory[1]); test_memory(&memory); return 0; } This gives me the output: memory[1] = Mem 1 Mem 0 Segmentation fault If I change the program and create a local version of the memory in the function by dereferencing the memory_ref, then I get the right output: So: #include <stdio.h> #include <stdlib.h> #include <ctype.h> #include <string.h> void test_memory(char*** memory_ref) { char** memory = *memory_ref; int i; for(i = 0; i < 3; i++) { printf("%s\n", memory[i]); } } int main() { char** memory; int i; memory = calloc(sizeof(char*), 20); for(i = 0; i < 20; i++) { memory[i] = calloc(sizeof(char), 33); } memory[0] = "Mem 0"; memory[1] = "Mem 1"; memory[2] = "Mem 2"; printf("memory[1] = %s\n", memory[1]); test_memory(&memory); return 0; } gives me the following output: memory[1] = Mem 1 Mem 0 Mem 1 Mem 2 which is what I want, but making a local version of the memory is useless because I need to be able to change the values of the original memory from the function which I can only do by dereferencing the pointer to the original 2d char array. I don't understand why I should get a seg fault on the second time round, and I'd be grateful for any advice. Many thanks Joe

  • seg fault caused by malloc and sscanf in a function

    - by Framester
    Hi, I want to open a text file (see below), read the first int in every line and store it in an array, but I get an segmentation fault. I got rid of all gcc warnings, I read through several tutorials I found on the net and searched stackoverflow for solutions, but I could't make out, what I am doing wrong. It works when I have everything in the main function (see example 1), but not when I transfer it to second function (see example 2 further down). In example 2 I get, when I interpret gdb correctly a seg fault at sscanf (line,"%i",classes[i]);. I'm afraid, it could be something trivial, but I already wasted one day on it. Thanks in advance. [Example 1] Even though that works with everything in main: #include<stdio.h> #include<stdlib.h> #include<string.h> const int LENGTH = 1024; int main() { char *filename="somedatafile.txt"; int *classes; int lines; FILE *pfile = NULL; char line[LENGTH]; pfile=fopen(filename,"r"); int numlines=0; char *p; while(fgets(line,LENGTH,pfile)){ numlines++; } rewind(pfile); classes=(int *)malloc(numlines*sizeof(int)); if(classes == NULL){ printf("\nMemory error."); exit(1); } int i=0; while(fgets(line,LENGTH,pfile)){ printf("\n"); p = strtok (line," "); p = strtok (NULL, ", "); sscanf (line,"%i",&classes[i]); i++; } fclose(pfile); return 1; } [Example 2] This does not with the functionality transfered to a function: #include<stdio.h> #include<stdlib.h> #include<string.h> const int LENGTH = 1024; void read_data(int **classes,int *lines, char *filename){ FILE *pfile = NULL; char line[LENGTH]; pfile=fopen(filename,"r"); int numlines=0; char *p; while(fgets(line,LENGTH,pfile)){ numlines++; } rewind(pfile); * classes=(int *)malloc(numlines*sizeof(int)); if(*classes == NULL){ printf("\nMemory error."); exit(1); } int i=0; while(fgets(line,LENGTH,pfile)){ printf("\n"); p = strtok (line," "); p = strtok (NULL, ", "); sscanf (line,"%i",classes[i]); i++; } fclose(pfile); *lines=numlines; } int main() { char *filename="somedatafile.txt"; int *classes; int lines; read_data(&classes, &lines,filename) ; for(int i=0;i<lines;i++){ printf("\nclasses[i]=%i",classes[i]); } return 1; } [Content of somedatafile.txt] 50 21 77 0 28 0 27 48 22 2 55 0 92 0 0 26 36 92 56 4 53 0 82 0 52 -5 29 30 2 1 37 0 76 0 28 18 40 48 8 1 37 0 79 0 34 -26 43 46 2 1 85 0 88 -4 6 1 3 83 80 5 56 0 81 0 -4 11 25 86 62 4 55 -1 95 -3 54 -4 40 41 2 1 53 8 77 0 28 0 23 48 24 4 37 0 101 -7 28 0 64 73 8 1 ...

If there are problems, cd to the src directory and run make there cd src && make first gcc -c -I. -Iproto -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -DFEAT_GUI_GTK -I/usr/include/gtk-2.0 -I/usr/lib/gtk-2.0/include -I/usr/include/atk-1.0 -I/usr/include/pango-1.0 -I/usr/openwin/include -I/usr/sfw/include -I/usr/sfw/include/freetype2 -I/usr/include/glib-2.0 -I/usr/lib/glib-2.0/include -g -O2 -I/usr/openwin/include -o objects/buffer.o buffer.c In file included from buffer.c:28: vim.h:41: error: syntax error before ':' token In file included from os_unix.h:29, from vim.h:245, from buffer.c:28: /usr/include/sys/stat.h:251: error: syntax error before "blksize_t" /usr/include/sys/stat.h:255: error: syntax error before '}' token /usr/include/sys/stat.h:309: error: syntax error before "blksize_t" /usr/include/sys/stat.h:310: error: conflicting types for 'st_blocks' /usr/include/sys/stat.h:252: error: previous declaration of 'st_blocks' was here /usr/include/sys/stat.h:313: error: syntax error before '}' token In file included from /opt/local/bin/../lib/gcc/sparc-sun-solaris2.6/3.4.6/include/sys/signal.h:132, from /usr/include/signal.h:26, from os_unix.h:163, from vim.h:245, from buffer.c:28: /usr/include/sys/siginfo.h:259: error: syntax error before "ctid_t" /usr/include/sys/siginfo.h:292: error: syntax error before '}' token /usr/include/sys/siginfo.h:294: error: syntax error before '}' token /usr/include/sys/siginfo.h:390: error: syntax error before "ctid_t" /usr/include/sys/siginfo.h:398: error: conflicting types for '__fault' /usr/include/sys/siginfo.h:267: error: previous declaration of '__fault' was here /usr/include/sys/siginfo.h:404: error: conflicting types for '__file' /usr/include/sys/siginfo.h:273: error: previous declaration of '__file' was here /usr/include/sys/siginfo.h:420: error: conflicting types for '__prof' /usr/include/sys/siginfo.h:287: error: previous declaration of '__prof' was here /usr/include/sys/siginfo.h:424: error: conflicting types for '__rctl' /usr/include/sys/siginfo.h:291: error: previous declaration of '__rctl' was here /usr/include/sys/siginfo.h:426: error: syntax error before '}' token /usr/include/sys/siginfo.h:428: error: syntax error before '}' token /usr/include/sys/siginfo.h:432: error: syntax error before "k_siginfo_t" /usr/include/sys/siginfo.h:437: error: syntax error before '}' token In file included from /usr/include/signal.h:26, from os_unix.h:163, from vim.h:245, from buffer.c:28: /opt/local/bin/../lib/gcc/sparc-sun-solaris2.6/3.4.6/include/sys/signal.h:173: error: syntax error before "siginfo_t" In file included from os_unix.h:163, from vim.h:245, from buffer.c:28: /usr/include/signal.h:111: error: syntax error before "siginfo_t" /usr/include/signal.h:113: error: syntax error before "siginfo_t" buffer.c: In function `buflist_new': buffer.c:1502: error: storage size of 'st' isn't known buffer.c: In function `buflist_findname': buffer.c:1989: error: storage size of 'st' isn't known buffer.c: In function `setfname': buffer.c:2578: error: storage size of 'st' isn't known buffer.c: In function `otherfile_buf': buffer.c:2836: error: storage size of 'st' isn't known buffer.c: In function `buf_setino': buffer.c:2874: error: storage size of 'st' isn't known buffer.c: In function `buf_same_ino': buffer.c:2894: error: dereferencing pointer to incomplete type buffer.c:2895: error: dereferencing pointer to incomplete type *** Error code 1 make: Fatal error: Command failed for target `objects/buffer.o' Current working directory /home/xluntor/vim72/src *** Error code 1 make: Fatal error: Command failed for target `first' How do I fix the make errors? Or is there another way to install vim as non-root? Thanks in advance EDIT: I took a look at the google groups link Sarah posted. The "Compiling Vim" page linked from there was for Linux, so the commands doesn't even work on Solars. But it did hint at logging the output of ./configure to a file, so I did that. Here it is: ./configure output removed. New version further down. Does anyone spot anything critical missing? EDIT 2: So I downloaded the vim package from sunfreeware. I couldn't just install it, since I don't have root privileges, but I was able to extract the package file. This was the file structure in it: `-- SMCvim `-- reloc |-- bin |-- doc | `-- vim `-- share |-- man | `-- man1 `-- vim `-- vim72 |-- autoload | `-- xml |-- colors |-- compiler |-- doc |-- ftplugin |-- indent |-- keymap |-- lang |-- macros | |-- hanoi | |-- life | |-- maze | `-- urm |-- plugin |-- print |-- spell |-- syntax |-- tools `-- tutor I moved the three files (vim, vimtutor, xdd) in SMCvim/reloc/bin to $HOME/bin, so now I can finally run $HOME/bin/vim! But where do I put the "share" directory and its content? EDIT 3: It might also be worth noting that there already exists an install of vim on the system, but it is broken. When I try to run it I get: ld.so.1: vim: fatal: libgtk-1.2.so.0: open failed: No such file or directory "which vim" outputs /opt/local/bin/vim EDIT 4: Trying to compile this on Solaris 10. uname -a SunOS ws005-22 5.10 Generic_141414-10 sun4u sparc SUNW,SPARC-Enterprise New ./configure output: ./configure --prefix=$home/bin ac_cv_sizeof_int=8 --enable-rubyinterp configure: loading cache auto/config.cache checking whether make sets $(MAKE)... yes checking for gcc... gcc checking for C compiler default output file name... a.out checking whether the C compiler works... yes checking whether we are cross compiling... no checking for suffix of executables... checking for suffix of object files... o checking whether we are using the GNU C compiler... yes checking whether gcc accepts -g... yes checking for gcc option to accept ISO C89... unsupported checking how to run the C preprocessor... gcc -E checking for grep that handles long lines and -e... /usr/sfw/bin/ggrep checking for egrep... /usr/sfw/bin/ggrep -E checking for library containing strerror... none required checking for gawk... gawk checking for strip... strip checking for ANSI C header files... yes checking for sys/wait.h that is POSIX.1 compatible... no configure: checking for buggy tools... checking for BeOS... no checking for QNX... no checking for Darwin (Mac OS X)... no checking --with-local-dir argument...
