  • Welcome to the newly merged JCP EC!

    As part of the JCP.Next effort, the second JSR as part of the JCP program reforms, JSR 355, Executive Committee (EC) Merge, will take effect on Tuesday as JCP 2.9. The first in the effort was JSR 348, which took effect as JCP 2.8 in October 2011. EC members guide the evolution of the Java technologies by approving and voting on all technology proposals (Java Specification Requests, or JSRs). They are also responsible for defining the JCP's rules of governance and the legal agreement between members and the organization. They provide guidance to the Program Management Office (PMO) and they represent the interests of the JCP to the broader community. Starting on Tuesday, 13 November, JCP 2.9 is in effect, and the EC is merged from two ECs -- one representing Java SE/EE and one representing Java ME -- to one merged EC. IBM and Oracle each gave up one of their two seats (one per EC) and the terms expired for four members who did not run for re-election: AT&T, Deutsch Telekom, Siemens and Vodafone. All four remain JCP members. In addition, the seat occupied by RIM was forfeited due to lack of participation in October 2012. The JCP values the organizations and representatives for their contribution to the JCP EC, and looks forward to their continued participation in the JCP Program. The complete listing of the EC, 24 members total at the moment, is now available. We asked the two newcomers to the EC, Cinterion and CloudBees, and the re-elected London Java Community, to comment on their plans for their term in the EC. Read about their plans in the article published on JCP.org, "JCP 2.9 with a Merged EC Takes Effect 13 November".   • How can I remedy the always-on-top window problem?

    Sorry for the vague title but this one is hard to explain so bear with me please. I'm using Windows Vista at work for web development and sometimes when I Click or Alt-Tab to background window, the window will get focus but it will not be brought to the front. In order to bring the window to the front, I have to click on the applications border (when the resize cursor appears) and the window will then jump to the front. I've had this problem for about a year now and it happens at least a dozen times a day, but it doesn't do this all the time - seems random. I hope I have explained the issue fully (and you've understood it) and would appreciate any constructive answers or comments to solve this problem. Example: If I Alt-Tab from Google Chrome to Notepad and this problem randomly occurs, Google Chrome will remain in front of Notepad, however, I will be able to type text into Notepad while the window is behind Google Chrome. Clicking on Notepad's content area will not bring it to the front but clicking it's window border will. Video Exampe http://vimeo.com/19388998 In this video, I clicked from Google Chome to UltraEdit and chrome stayed in font, but as you can see, I can still type in UltraEdit. I'm starting to believe that this could be a bug in Google Chrome so I'll continue to watch if this between other applications.

Today's tip is on Storage and Oracle Virtual Desktop Infrastructure: Question: I run Oracle Virtual Desktop 3.4.1 on Solaris and use a local ZFS storage pool.  How should I configure my ZFS ARC cache?  Answer by John Renko, Consulting Developer, Oracle: Oracle recommends about 5G of ARC cache per template in use to achieve up to a 90% disk read offload. Set your ARC min=max to reserve the maximum amount of your remaining memory for your running VMs. In /etc/system: set zfs:zfs_arc_min = 5368709120 set zfs:zfs_arc_max = 5368709120 The amount you need to reserve will depend on your template but this has proven to be a great start for a typical windows 7 VM running productivity applications.

  • Welcome to BlogEngine.NET 2.9 using Microsoft SQL Server

    If you see this post it means that BlogEngine.NET 2.9 is running and the hard part of creating your own blog is done. There is only a few things left to do. Write Permissions To be able to log in to the blog and writing posts, you need to enable write permissions on the App_Data folder. If you’re blog is hosted at a hosting provider, you can either log into your account’s admin page or call the support. You need write permissions on the App_Data folder because all posts, comments, and blog attachments are saved as XML files and placed in the App_Data folder.  If you wish to use a database to to store your blog data, we still encourage you to enable this write access for an images you may wish to store for your blog posts.  If you are interested in using Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL, SQL CE, or other databases, please see the BlogEngine wiki to get started. Security When you've got write permissions to the App_Data folder, you need to change the username and password. Find the sign-in link located either at the bottom or top of the page depending on your current theme and click it. Now enter "admin" in both the username and password fields and click the button. You will now see an admin menu appear. It has a link to the "Users" admin page. From there you can change the username and password.  Passwords are hashed by default so if you lose your password, please see the BlogEngine wiki for information on recovery. Configuration and Profile Now that you have your blog secured, take a look through the settings and give your new blog a title.  BlogEngine.NET 2.9 is set up to take full advantage of of many semantic formats and technologies such as FOAF, SIOC and APML. It means that the content stored in your BlogEngine.NET installation will be fully portable and auto-discoverable.  Be sure to fill in your author profile to take better advantage of this. Themes, Widgets & Extensions One last thing to consider is customizing the look of your blog.  We have a few themes available right out of the box including two fully setup to use our new widget framework.  The widget framework allows drop and drag placement on your side bar as well as editing and configuration right in the widget while you are logged in.  Extensions allow you to extend and customize the behaivor of your blog.  Be sure to check the BlogEngine.NET Gallery at dnbegallery.org as the go-to location for downloading widgets, themes and extensions. On the web You can find BlogEngine.NET on the official website. Here you'll find tutorials, documentation, tips and tricks and much more.   • Disable RDC Welcome Screen in Windows 2008 R2

    Is there a way to disable or bypass the "Welcome" screen I see when I'm using RDC to log in to a machine using saved credentials? I have startup task which launches an RDP session automatically to localhost when the machine boots. This works, except that the remote desktop window stops and waits for an "OK" on the Welcome screen: MACHINENAME-A.B.C.D(Server ID:Console 0) Welcome [OK] This screen is preventing me from automating this login. Is there any way to get around it? EDIT: Here's the command line I'm currently using to launch it: start /min C:\windows\system32\mstsc.exe c:\rdp\ServiceRunner.rdp

    I'm making an API that will return data in JSON. I also wanted on client side to make an utility class to call this API. Something like : JSONObject sendGetRequest(Url url); JSONObject sendPostRequest(Url url, HashMap postData); However sometimes the API send back array of object [{id:1},{id:2}] I now got two choices (): Make the method test for JSONArray or JSONObject and send back an Object that I will have to cast in the caller Make a method that returns JSONObject and one for JSONArray (like sendGetRequestAndReturnAsJSONArray) Make the server always send Arrays even for one element Make the server always send Objects wrapping my Array I going for the two last methods since I think it would be a good thing to force the API to send consistent type of data. But what would be the best practice (if one exist). Always send arrays? or always send objects?

  • XP Pro freezes on welcome screen

    I have a problem that sounds much the same as http://superuser.com/questions/83101/how-to-diagnose-a-freeze-on-startup-in-windows-xp About every 2nd or 3rd boot, XP-Pro freezes on the Welcome page (the one showing the user name icons). The mouse moves the cursor OK, but clicking on an icon does nothing, and neither does any keystroke. If you press too many keys there is a beep and after that the mouse won't move the cursor anymore. The work-around is always to reboot into Safe mode and request a CHKDSK /R After this, the next boot is fine. There are no related entries in the Event log when the problem occurs. The only two entries are: "Microsoft (R) Windows (R) 5.01. 2600 Service Pack 3 Multiprocessor Free." "The Event log service was started." Update 1: Many thanks for that but I found no problems with any diagnostics I have run. But, I have managed to locate, and code round, the source of the problem - which is with whatever processing goes on behind the XP Welcome (as opposed to "classic") login screen. Unfortunately, having classic login means you don't get the useful Fast User Switching (FUS) login/switch mode. So, to retain this, my fix is: Add a Windows shutdown script (using gpedit.msc) to force "classic" mode for the first logon after next XP startup, by running: reg add "hklm\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon" /v LogonType /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f Add a Scheduled Task to run at User Logon that enables Welcome screen (and hence FUS) by running the same command with 1 instead of 0 after the /d flag. The task is run as a privileged user (who can run "reg add").

  • System recognizes admin password on the Welcome screen but not when elevating

    I set up Windows 7 with a couple of standard accounts, and an administrator account (called Odin). I can log in to Odin just fine from the Welcome screen. While logged into Odin I can do anything that requires administrator privileges without a password: just hit Yes in the User Account Control dialog. If I am logged into one of the other accounts and I do something that requires elevation (e.g. most installers, and some control panel functionality), then Windows presents me with a User Account Control dialog asking "Do you want to allow the following program to make changes to this computer? To continue, type an administrator password, and then click Yes." The account shown in this dialog is Odin, so I enter Odin's password. But Windows redisplays the dialog with the message "Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password." This always happens, and has done so for many months, probably since I first got the computer. Why does Odin's password work from the Welcome screen, but not when elevating? Please note that I am not asking how to recover Odin's password. I remember the password I originally set for Odin, and it works as it should from the Welcome screen, but is not recognized when elevating. The password has no funny characters, just letters and digits. Thanks!

  • Windows 7 Home hangs at "Welcome" screen

    I'm asking on behalf of a friend who's currently having problems with his machine. Windows 7 Home 32-bit. He's too far away for me to help by going over to his house - I'm helping him over the Internet. This is his current machine: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883227134 The only two changes he made to that machine is to swap out the gfx card for a EVGA GTX 460 and the PSU for a Corsair TX650. Here's what happened: He was playing a computer game (fairly CPU/GPU intensive) and had some music going in the background in foobar while playing. Suddenly, he notices the music stopped playing, so he switches to foobar to try to close it, but it freezes up (window won't respond). So he figures it's just foobar having a bad day and force quits that program. Suddenly, his game won't respond, so he force quits that, then the entire computer just went to crap at that point, so he hits the restart button on his machine. Computer POSTS fine, but now he gets stuck at the Windows "welcome" screen (his account is set to auto-login). HD activity light is solid yellow but he doesn't hear HDD activity. He tried booting into Safe Mode - gets stuck at the "welcome screen". Tried a STartup Repair within Windows 7, it found a few problems, but still gets stuck at welcome. I advised him to boot off the DVD - sfc /scannow found nothing (couldn't use the regular /scannow option; says there's a repair pending, had to use use offbootdir/offwindir command switches). Ran startup repair 3 times - found nothing. My friend runs virus/malware scans on a regular basis, so he's fairly sure it's not that either. Right now I'm having my friend run chkdsk /R on the computer while in this Startup Recovery mode - so far it's caught a few bad sectors. However at this point I'm kinda wondering which way to go if chkdsk doesn't fix it. Quick Google search said someone had success by booting Windows with bootlogging on - some others have success with running the aforemented chkdsk, etc. The fact that Windows cannot even boot into Safe Mode concerns me. While we're waiting for chkdsk /R to finish, are there any other options I can give my friend short of reinstalling Windows 7? He has his data on a separate partition so that's not a major problem (though it'll be an annoyance for him). I suspect his hard drive may be having some issues, but my main concern is getting him back up and running before we start diagnosing the hard drive (I may have him run some sort of SMART test utility later).

    I have a problem with my Windows 7 which fails to startup, and it happens frequently. I already tried to fix it, but nothing happened. I checked my hardisk and there is no badsector detected. Its stop in the Welcome screen and I get the following message: C:\Windows\System32\EXPLORERFRAME.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or contains an error. The Welcome screen then disappears and I get a totally empty screen with a cursor. What happened and how can I fix it?
