I need to download the java sdk to install solr, and also need to install winrar since I can't even unzip a file I uploaded from my mapped drive. What setting do I have to change?

    I have 50,000 high resolution JPEG photos, where a couple of them might occasionally be needed, about once a year. I wanted to zip them to save disk space, except that zipping gives no space benefit - so trying to reduce the images disk usage using winzip, winrar or 7zip was not successful. Is there any software or algorithm similar to zip to compress image size on hard disk for storage without loosing any image information?

    I have a large file I want to transfer using either Internet storage hosting, DVD-Rs or USB storage, which sometimes is limited to FAT file-systems (for example: mobile phones) What I'm basically looking for is a tool that create multiple files/volumes (less than 2GB each - FAT's file size limit) which are packed with a self-extracting executable. Currently the only tool I found doing this is WinRAR, but that's shareware, and not free. Is there any Free, preferably Open-Source tool that does that? Thank in advance

  • Preventing some apps from appearing on the start menu on vista

    Vista start menu shows your most frequently used apps, which is great, I love it. However, there are some apps which I use frequently through shell or such, that I do not want to appear on that menu. Winrar, Media Player Classic, Infranview... I can right click on it to remove it, but it'll return to the menu shortly, how can I set it so that those apps never appear on the start menu. Thanks.

  • Command-line tool to deduplicate a single humongous file?

    I make regular snapshots of my VM using a nightly script. These backups are compressed using WinRAR and do shrink considerably, but I suspect it's not as efficient as had the file had been deduplicated first (just a hunch which I'm hoping to test). So instead of compressing the VHD itself, I would like to deduplicate the single file first, and then compress the output of the deduplicator. Is anyone aware of such a CLI tool?

    I recently downloaded a piece of software that came in a .ZIP archive, but the .EXE software inside of the archive had a password on it. The website that I would have gotten the password from closed a while ago. Because the executable is password protected it cannot be extracted. I'm on Windows 7 Home Premium, and I use winrar for my archives. So, I guess my question is is it possible to crack a password for a file within an archive without extracting it?

I'm looking for a GUI tool to open up the contets and extract needed files. On windows I would use WinRar to do this. K3B only allows me to burn the stuff, Arch does not work with ISO files :( Is there a similar tool on Linux, preferably from KDE world?

    I just downloaded the Java SDK/JDK versions 5 and 6, and I just need the development tools (and some libraries) contained in the installation packages, I don't need to perform an installation and that's why I was only looking for a zip package at first (for Windows there is only an exe installation file), I only need to extract the contents of the installation packages, I think this can be done from the command line but so far I haven't found how to do this (I already considered WinRar and 7-Zip, but I really want to find how to do it without using these tools) Have you done this before and how?

  • Strange. Asterisk key plays random Windows sound when pressed

    This is a new one on me. When I press the "asterisk", or * button on my number pad (but not SHIFT+8), Windows makes either a "Exclamation" or "Windows ding" sound. I haven't noticed a pattern to which sound is made. Logitech K200 keyboard No special key mapping software or Logitech software running Realtek sound to stereo through optical cable. Visual Studio 2010, Chrome, Fiddler, WinRAR, Notepad++, and Dropbox running. No unusual behavior otherwise. A solution isn't terribly important but my curiosity is both piqued and stumped. This doesn't normally happen and nothing odd has taken place otherwise. Ideas?

    I have created tar.gz from my linux server, and I downloaded the same to my linux system and I successfully doen untar with tar -xvf package.tar.gz. And now my issue I downloaded same package.tar.gz to the windows system then uploaded to another linux server, and tried same command tar -xvf package.tar.gz. but it getting tar: This does not look like a tar archive tar: Skipping to next header tar: Exiting with failure status due to previous errors as response. I also tried filezill manual trnasfer with binary mode. How can I do the same ? Update When I directly download to the linux system its working fine.     I have a strange error in Windows 7 when I want to execute/open a file inside ZIP archive. I have two files: File1.dwg File2.dwg The archive is not corrupted ( I checked with 7zip utility ) When I double click on the any file inside ZIP (I opened ZIP with Windows Explorer), the error occured: Ok. If I open zip file with 7-zip or WinRAR every file could be opened(executed) without error and the AutoCAD is opened to see the dwg content. Why in Windows ZIP ?   • opening offline sync files from a .CAB file

    OK, I have downloaded from Windows Live Spaces (don't know if this is useful, but might be) a .CAB file containing an Index.XML file and package.cab, package01.cab through to package12.cab. The index.XML simply has names of all the subsequent package.cab files and their offsets. The first package.cab has a single 26MB XML file which appears to be an OfflineSyncFile definition which I am guessing is the meta data for all the other packageXX.cab files. Now the question I have is how should i be going about extracting these things and piecing it all back together again. I have tried WinRAR, which extracts all 800MB for me into unnamed files and randomly named directories. I have also tried the standard extract in Windows Explorer with much the same resusts.

  • Software that will burn DVDs with a SFV or Pararchive file for each disc?

    I'd like to burn several thousand RAW files (.DNG) of around 10-30 MB each to DVD to backup my photo archive. I'm looking for software that can do this and include an SFV-type file on each disc burnt. These are my requirements: compression is optional, and probably not desirable due to the extra time involved files should be spread amongst the discs as self-contained units, i.e. I don't want to have to load files from more than one disc to be able to read the files on that disc, so that excludes WinRAR's spanning options I don't want to spend time writing ISO images first as this will be a task I'll need to repeat often as I add new images to my archive - the software should write to the DVDs for me as simply as possible I'd like the SFV/Pararchive/recovery record to be stored with the files on each disc, so it only references the files on that particular disk Thanks in advance!

    I have just uploaded tar.gz archive to my Centos server from my home Windows 7 computer. Before that, it was extracted from .zip archive. When I try to extract it: tar -xvf file.tar.gz gunzip file.tar.gz It always give me error: "not in gzip format" The archive is not corrupted, because it is possible to extract it in Windows with Winrar. It always appeared to bomb out with an incomplete archive at about 20gb. So I tried using WinRAR and doing it manually as a ZIP file, but it told me of the limit. So, I was wondering, what is a recommended zip format (and tool for accomplishing the task) for archiving up a large amount of data (around 50gb)? Thanks
