    Just learned about the screen command on linux - it is genius. I love it. However, the actual terminal/prompt in screen looks and behaves differently than my standard bash prompt. That is, the colors aren't the same, tab completion doesn't seem to work, etc. Is there a way I can tell screen to behave just like a normal (at least, normal as in what I am used to) bash prompt ?

Additional Information I am connecting via ssh from a Mac (Terminal) to a headless linux box (Ubuntu). After logging in, I have TERM=xterm-color and when I run screen I have TERM=screen. Am going to try the suggestions below to see if I can change the $TERM value first.

    In windows7 how do I request a new dhcp lease ? What I need in the equivalent of the button "repair" on windows XP. The button "diagnose" seems to do a few things but not request a new dhcp lease if one is already available. Disabling and re-enabling the card does the trick but messes up any program capturing traffic on the interface.

    I am currently helping to implement an RFID inventory management system for my company. The software that we are locked into has been at best buggy and unreliable. The software provider is now rolling out a major release. My problem is that the new software release keeps a local database on each machine that then syncs to a master database online. According to the software company we cannot do a scaled rollout because of data corruption issues between the software releases. What questions can I be asking and what sort of testing can I do on my end to make sure this software works? Any suggestions would be very helpful.

  • Why does my PDF ask for a password after being retrieved from Visual SourceSafe?

    PREFACE: Yes we're moving away from VSS in the next few months. One of my web projects contains, as one of its files, a PDF. The PDF on our QA site is being pulled from VSS. A QA tester recently told me he's being prompted for a password when he tries to open it. VSS says the file I have on disk is different than the one it has, so I updated it, but afterwards it's still being shown as different. So basically VSS is mangling my PDF and the results are so wobbly that Adobe Acrobat Reader is confused and thinks it has a password. I've tried adding it as Auto-Detect and as Binary. Same results. Why does my PDF ask for a password after being retrieved from Visual SourceSafe and how can I prevent it?

  • iPhone SDK: Do I need to ask user for permissions to use GPS?

    In my iPhone application I need to use GPS (CoreLocation to be exact) to get current position of the device. I know that most (if not all) applications using GPS have a popup implemented asking the user to allow GPS access. Is that done automatically by the iPhone SDK or should I implement such functionality myself? I've tried to run my app on iPhone Simulator and it didn't ask for permissions at all so I'm wondering if the same thing will happen on the actual phone. And if I implement that itself and the SKD provides that out-of-the-box then I'll have two confirmation in my app which I don't want.

    Here's the thing. I have a button that, depending on the scenario, will behave, look and have different text. Here's how it, roughly, looks like at the moment: - if params[:param_A] && @statement_A %span.button.cancel_button{attribute: "value_B"} - if @statement_B = t('locale_A') - else = t('locale_B') - elsif params[:param_A] %span.button.cancel_button{attribute: "value_A"} - if @statement_B = t('locale_A') - else = t('locale_B') There's also a CSS class both buttons should have IF statement_B is true. So it is a mess. And I recently read about the "Tell, don't ask" principle which I liked very much, so I'd love to apply it here... but I'm not sure how. I know I could make a helper, but I'd like to stay away from them because reasons (I really have some valid reasons to do so, but those are beyond the scope of this question). I can resort to that as a last resource, but would rather find another solution.

  • ListView images just not showing up. Why (Drooping my head in shame that I have to ask)

    I am trying to display images in a WinForms ListView that is in details view mode, but images are just not showing up. I have added a SmallImageList (and a large one for good measure, added images to them, added my items to the ListView, but when I set the ImageIndex nothing happens. Images do not show up. I have also tried using the ImageKey. I feel like an idiot that I have to ask about this, but I must be doing something wrong. Any steps I am missing? Thanx much.

    I'm not familiar with Google Analytics but I think you can use it to see how many people get to your site using different search strings. But if you don't yet have the site, can you simply ask Google how popular a search is? For instance say you're choosing a new product name/slogan/etc. First of all, you want to see if that is already very crowded, which is easy through just Googling it. But now you might want to see if anyone is actually searching for this... an ideal situation would be to find a search-string lots of people are using, which doesn't put your competitors on the #1 spot. Is this possible? Not exactly programming-related, but closely related to web-development IMO... please vote to close if you disagree, I won't be offended!

    I need some help regarding the above title. After applying SP1 pack on our SharePoint Server 2007 (MOSS 3.0) the workflows aren't working anymmore on one of the WebApplications (located in SSP2) Workflows work, however on other existing applications (on SSP1 or SSP2) or newly created applications (on SSP1 or SSP2). Details of error: 1. Default / Built in SharePoint Workflows are not starting 2. Sharepoint Designer Workflows throwing the following error message: "You do not have permissions to do this operation. Ask your website administrator to change your pemissions and then try again, or log on with another account that has this permission. To log on with another user account click ok. " 3. Before applying the SP1 on MOSS the workflows were working perfectly fine on this WebApplication. so far: 1. I am logged in as Administrator (bot on Sharepoint site or when working with Sharepoint Designer). 2. Administrator is included in the list Site Collection Administrators 3. I noticed in Sharepoint designer that the username used for creating the workflow is 'converted' into SHAREPOINT\system (in the Modified By Column). Has anybody come accross/fixed this error? Any help much appreciated. Thanks D

  • Need help to install Ubuntu on Win7 Alienware M17xR3, installing not working

    Please I need help to install linux on my computer to start analyzing Next Generation Sequencing (molecular genetics) for my work. I've tried to install from all different ways and forms and it gave me different errors. First I will describe my system: Alienware M17x R3 Raid Drive 596GB (2x 298 GB) Windows7 primary partition C: The hardrive is divided in 3 primary partitions (can't do 4 don't know why) 1st: Fat16 no name capacity 40mbs almost not used (has files like command.com, dellbio.bin, dellrmk.bin and oobedone.flg) I dont know what this is for but is blocked and non system (Status:none). 2nd: Recovery NTFS 9GB (Status:system) and it seems to have boot files. 3rd: CD: Windos OS (status:boot). And I have 2 Logical drivers F: data for backup and games :D (300gb) G: For trying to install the Linux (Already tried with Fat32, Ext2, ext3 and ext4) Installing with Wubi on F: and G: Instalation looks good on windows ask to restart dos mode appears: try (HD0,0) non-ms:skip try (HD0,1) NTFS5: No Wibildr try (HD0,2) NTFS5: Error: "Prefix" is not set. Installing with Wubi on C: Installation looks good on windows ask to restart dos mode apears: Mount denied becouse NTFS volume is already exclusive opened, the volume may be already mounted or another software may use it which could be identified for example by the help of the 'FUSER' command Mount devdm-4 Could not find installation files /ubuntu/install custom-installation Run 'Chkdsk /r' on windows and restart...blablablalba... that should correct. done this didn't work. Tried installing with USB drive and after burning a CD with the Iso file download from the official website: I've tried the option to install along windows with a G: drive in FAT32, EXT2,3 and 4, I've tried to leave unallocated data, without the driver G at all... appears this everytime: http://i.stack.imgur.com/eo2Ie.png pres ok it ask me to: Not possible to install the boot loader at the location: specify new location: I've tried to select all the drivers non is accepted If I ask to continue without installing the boot loader he ask me to install later by myself which I'm trying to figure it out but I'm not really good to understand how ppl get to the programming part like a DOS to write down couse I'm a newb and I've dont work on dos or linux before... I've read that the boot loader has to be installed on the primary partition, but I'm not sure what I can delete from those 2 partitions that would let me get 1 extra... and it seems that the one that windows use is protected to write down so the software is not touching it... Please if someone have any idea to help me out... I've got a course tomorrow of how to use the software to analyze the data and I wanted to take my computer with me, so I've passed the last 3 days trying to search different ways to solve. Now I'm at the point where I do alot of text info such as help texts, eula, privacy policy etc. I realized that I'm not sure what would the best way to store these texts. 1. Directly in the aspx page 2. In text files and then load the text via ViewData[] to the aspx file 3. In my sql database If use option 3 how would I then design the database e.g. eula = table x, privacypolicy=table y? I guess I just need some directions of what't the pros and cons with the options above.

    There are lots of training methods from different vendors to learn .NET technologies (i.e. books, DVDs, online training, etc.). All of them claim the same thing: that they are the best, their content is 100% guaranteed, makes their customers professional in no time, etc. It’s confusing and sometimes frustrating as well. I especially want a training resource (i.e. a course) to provide valuable content in short time. More importantly I feel they should do their job properly so as to avoid the customer feeling they've wasted time or money. What I should do when I evaluating training methods and resources to help further software development skills? What are your training sources? Do you have any recommendations?

    I am searching for a tool/framework that follows the naked objects pattern and is written in Java. I know about tools like for instance JMatter, Naked Objects and Domain Object Explorer. That's not exactly what I am searching for, though. Open source would be great, but doesn't need to be. My intention is to use that tool/framework for the purpose of model-driven software development to do the modeling part. Ideally, such a tool/framework would provide the option to use JPA to store/load objects.

  • Recommendation for using equals in Entities and avoiding LazyInitializationExceptions?

    In the beginning there is a problem that wants to be solved. In my case i got an LazyInitializationException while using indexof in a Collection to retrieve an Object for manipulation. Here i start to think about using equals in EntityBeans (OR-Mapper at all). I know there are some discussions about overriding equals in association with OR-Mapper as hibernate like [1] Entities equals(), hashCode() and toString(). How to correctly implement them? [2] To equals and hashcode or not on entity classes, that is the question. [3] Overriding equals and hashCode in Java I currently have some entities which implements the equals but inside the code i could not use equals several times because of the LazyInitializationExceptions. So i had to workaround and use eg. the name property of the object to identify it's equality. From my point of view the whole 'LazyInitializationException-thing' is not really mentioned in this questions. I'd like to know have you got some good patterns or real live recommendations how to avoid such exception in an equal-Method. Shall i use some helper Methodes to distinguish if a Object of a class is already initialized (4) or should i apdicate the use of equals and use helper classes instead (2)? And what is about catching LazyInitializationExceptions in the equals? [Edit]: If you put equals in context with the initialization of the Object then it will gain importance. Sometimes it is nessesary to have the Object fully initialized but sometimes you don't want to. Because you just need the Object itself (name, id, ...) not its Collection-Properties. So just for equalization you have to reattach the Object and load the whole bunch you don't realy need? Are there any other solutions for such a problem?

    If this is not the place to ask this, please forgive this Ubuntu cub, I want to ask, what do people do with Ubuntu? As an Ask Ubuntu user I can see that most of the users (including myself) are asking questions about entertainment related problems. Is that all? No commercial use with it? Do people make fun of Ubuntu or just pretending to be Ubuntu users and use Windows secretly? Please don't hate me or make fun of me, I know lots of people trying to make Ubuntu even better, and I know it's better than Windows (if Adobe software just work on Ubuntu, I won't see Windows logo on my monitor anymore). What hinders Ubuntu from getting traction in the professional field?
