  • Midnight Commander Woes: Output while panels are active, and tab completion.

    - by Eddie Parker
I'm trying out midnight commander (loved Norton back in the day!) and I'm finding two things hard to work out. I'm curious if there's ways around this or not however. 1) If the panels are active and I issue a command that has a lot of output, it appears to be lost forever. i.e., if the panels are visible and I cat something (i.e., cat /proc/cpuinfo), that info is gone forever once the panels get redrawn. Is there anyway to see the output? I've tried 'ctrl-o', but it appears to just give me a fresh sub-shell and wipes the previous output away. Pausing after every invocation is a bit irritating, so I'd rather not use that option. 2) Tab completion for commands When mc is running, it consumes the tab character for switching panels. Is there any way to get around this so I can still type in paths and what not on the command line? I'm running cygwin if that matters at all.

  • limits.conf to set memory limits

    - by Rupert Jipe
I would like to limit any process from using more than 500 MB of RAM. AFAIK this is done using RSS in /etc/security/limits.conf but the process called gnome-panel apparently is using 618436 kB of VmRSS. How can this be ? /etc/security/limits.conf * hard rss 512000 username@debian:~$ cat /proc/3002/status Name: gnome-panel State: S (sleeping) Tgid: 3002 Pid: 3002 PPid: 2910 TracerPid: 0 Uid: 1000 1000 1000 1000 Gid: 1000 1000 1000 1000 FDSize: 64 Groups: 20 24 25 29 44 46 112 116 117 1000 1002 1003 VmPeak: 916636 kB VmSize: 916636 kB VmLck: 0 kB VmHWM: 618436 kB VmRSS: 618436 kB VmData: 601972 kB VmStk: 104 kB VmExe: 516 kB VmLib: 29232 kB VmPTE: 1760 kB Threads: 1 SigQ: 0/14001 SigPnd: 0000000000000000 ShdPnd: 0000000000000000 SigBlk: 0000000000000000 SigIgn: 0000000020001000 SigCgt: 0000000180000000 CapInh: 0000000000000000 CapPrm: 0000000000000000 CapEff: 0000000000000000 CapBnd: ffffffffffffffff Cpus_allowed: 3 Cpus_allowed_list: 0-1 Mems_allowed: 00000000,00000001 Mems_allowed_list: 0 voluntary_ctxt_switches: 871965 nonvoluntary_ctxt_switches: 47553 PaX: PeMRs username@debian:~$ cat /proc/3002/limits Limit Soft Limit Hard Limit Units Max cpu time unlimited unlimited seconds Max file size unlimited unlimited bytes Max data size unlimited unlimited bytes Max stack size 8388608 unlimited bytes Max core file size 0 0 bytes Max resident set 524288000 524288000 bytes Max processes 100 100 processes Max open files 1024 1024 files Max locked memory 65536 65536 bytes Max address space unlimited unlimited bytes Max file locks unlimited unlimited locks Max pending signals 14001 14001 signals Max msgqueue size 819200 819200 bytes Max nice priority 0 0 Max realtime priority 0 0 Max realtime timeout unlimited unlimited us

  • Why can't I get rid of default index.html even if I disable the default virtual host in Apache2?

    - by Emre Sevinç
I have created a virtual host settings file and I disabled the default settings by using a2dissite default (this is a pretty standard Ubuntu 10.04 installation). But no matter what I try my Apache2 server simply keeps on displaying the default index.html page instead of the index.php page that I set up in the virtual host file. Can someone help me what I'm missing. Details follow: No default settings: ls -l /etc/apache2/sites-enabled/ total 0 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 51 May 5 13:32 webmin.1273066327.conf -> /etc/apache2/sites-available/webmin.1273066327.conf lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 34 May 30 11:03 www.accontax.be -> ../sites-available/www.accontax.be Contents of the relevant virtual host: cat /etc/apache2/sites-enabled/www.accontax.be <VirtualHost *> ServerName www.accontax.be ServerAlias accontax.be DirectoryIndex index.php DocumentRoot /var/www/drupal/ <Directory /var/www/drupal/> Options Indexes FollowSymLinks MultiViews AllowOverride None Order allow, deny allow from all </Directory> </VirtualHost> Contents of httpd.conf: cat /etc/apache2/httpd.conf Listen 80 NameVirtualHost * I also have those relevant lines in my apache2.conf: # Include generic snippets of statements Include /etc/apache2/conf.d/ # Include the virtual host configurations: Include /etc/apache2/sites-enabled/ When I visit http://www.accontax.be I expect apache2 server go to the /var/www/drupal subdirectory and start serving index.php but it simply keeps on serving index.html from /var/www directory. I have reloaded the configuration, restarted the server, deleted my browser cache. Nothing changed. Probably I'm missing a simple yet crucial step but I just could not find it.

  • Is Subversion(SVN) supported on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS 32bit?

    - by Chad
I've setup subversion on Ubuntu 10.04, but can't get authentication to work. I believe all my config files are setup correctly, However I keep getting prompted for credentials on a SVN CHECKOUT. Like there is an issue with apache2 talking to svnserve. If I allow anonymous access checkout works fine. Does anybody know if there is a known issue with subversion and 10.04 or see a error in my configuration? below is my configuration: # fresh install of Ubuntu 10.04 LTS 32bit sudo apt-get install apache2 apache2-utils -y sudo apt-get install subversion libapache2-svn subversion-tools -y sudo mkdir /svn sudo svnadmin create /svn/DataTeam sudo svnadmin create /svn/ReportingTeam #Setup the svn config file sudo vi /etc/apache2/mods-available/dav_svn.conf #replace file with the following. <Location /svn> DAV svn SVNParentPath /svn/ AuthType Basic AuthName "Subversion Server" AuthUserFile /etc/apache2/dav_svn.passwd Require valid-user AuthzSVNAccessFile /etc/apache2/svn_acl </Location> sudo touch /etc/apache2/svn_acl #replace file with the following. • pdftotext not outputting hebrew characters

    - by Ofri Raviv
I'm using Xpdf's pdftotext to get the text out of some hebrew pdf files on Ubuntu. On my local machine this worked fine. I then tried to do it on another machine and the hebrew characters don't show up in the text file. I verified that I have the language package (see below why I think so). Where else can I look for the problem? >> tail -2 /etc/xpdf/xpdfrc include /etc/xpdf/includes >> cat /etc/xpdf/includes # This file was automatically generated by /usr/sbin/update-xpdfrc. # Instead, add or remove files in /etc/xpdf/ then run # /usr/sbin/update-xpdfrc to regenerate this file. include /etc/xpdf/xpdfrc-latin2 include /etc/xpdf/xpdfrc-thai include /etc/xpdf/xpdfrc-greek include /etc/xpdf/xpdfrc-turkish include /etc/xpdf/xpdfrc-arabic include /etc/xpdf/xpdfrc-hebrew include /etc/xpdf/xpdfrc-cyrillic >> cat /etc/xpdf/xpdfrc-hebrew #----- begin Hebrew support package (2003-feb-16) unicodeMap ISO-8859-8 /usr/share/xpdf/hebrew/ISO-8859-8.unicodeMap unicodeMap Windows-1255 /usr/share/xpdf/hebrew/Windows-1255.unicodeMap #----- end Hebrew support package >> ls /usr/share/xpdf/hebrew/ ISO-8859-8.unicodeMap Windows-1255.unicodeMap

  • SSH X11 forwarding does not work. Why?

    - by Ole Tange
This is a debugging question. When you ask for clarification please make sure it is not already covered below. I have 4 machines: Z, A, N, and M. To get to A you have to log into Z first. To get to M you have to log into N first. The following works: ssh -X Z xclock ssh -X Z ssh -X Z xclock ssh -X Z ssh -X A xclock ssh -X N xclock ssh -X N ssh -X N xclock But this does not: ssh -X N ssh -X M xclock Error: Can't open display: The $DISPLAY is clearly not set when logging in to M. The question is why? Z and A share same NFS-homedir. N and M share the same NFS-homedir. N's sshd runs on a non standard port. $ grep X11 <(ssh Z cat /etc/ssh/ssh_config) ForwardX11 yes # ForwardX11Trusted yes $ grep X11 <(ssh N cat /etc/ssh/ssh_config) ForwardX11 yes # ForwardX11Trusted yes N:/etc/ssh/ssh_config == Z:/etc/ssh/ssh_config and M:/etc/ssh/ssh_config == A:/etc/ssh/ssh_config /etc/ssh/sshd_config is the same for all 4 machines (apart from Port and login permissions for certain groups). If I forward M's ssh port to my local machine it still does not work: terminal1$ ssh -L 8888:M:22 N terminal2$ ssh -X -p 8888 localhost xclock Error: Can't open display: A:.Xauthority contains A, but M:.Xauthority does not contain M. xauth is installed in /usr/bin/xauth on both A and M. xauth is being run when logging in to A but not when logging in to M. ssh -vvv does not complain about X11 or xauth when logging in to A and M. Both say: debug2: x11_get_proto: /usr/bin/xauth list :0 2>/dev/null debug1: Requesting X11 forwarding with authentication spoofing. debug2: channel 0: request x11-req confirm 0 debug2: client_session2_setup: id 0 debug2: channel 0: request pty-req confirm 1 debug1: Sending environment. I have a feeling the problem may be related to M missing in M:.Xauthority (caused by xauth not being run) or that $DISPLAY is somehow being disabled by a login script, but I cannot figure out what is wrong.

  • /dev/input/uinput Device appears to be 'broken'

    - by Adam Luchjenbroers
I'm trying to setup Pystromo so that I can remap the keys on my Belkin N52TE gamepad. Pystromo basically captures the key strokes and then outputs the remapped keystrokes to the uinput device. However, at the moment it simply swallows the input and outputs absolutely nothing. I've tracked the issue to something being wrong with my uinput device, with the smoking gun being: # ls -l /dev/input/uinput crw-rw---- 1 root plugdev 10, 223 Dec 31 2009 /dev/input/uinput # cat /dev/input/uinput cat: /dev/input/uinput: No such device The uinput module is loaded, and can be clearly seen via lsmod. Anyone seen this before, or can think of something worth attempting? Current Setup Gentoo Linux Kernel 2.6.32 (Gentoo Sources 2.6.32-r1) HP DV7 Laptop Output dmesg dmesg | grep uinput does nothing, and no new lines appear if I run modprobe -r uinput && modprobe uinput. Yet the uinput module can clearly be seen when running lsmod: # lsmod | grep uinput uinput 6200 0 lsusb # lsusb Bus 005 Device 003: ID 050d:0200 Belkin Components Bus 005 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub Bus 008 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub Bus 004 Device 002: ID 1532:0101 Razer USA, Ltd Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub Bus 002 Device 002: ID 5986:0143 Acer, Inc Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub Bus 006 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub Bus 007 Device 002: ID 03f0:171d Hewlett-Packard Wireless (Bluetooth + WLAN) Interface [Integrated Module] Bus 007 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub lsusb -v PasteBin Update Hmm, updating evdev and hal seems to have partially fixed it. /dev/input/uinput still can't be accessed but Pystromo is now remapping keys successfully. I'm a little bit mystified about what's going on here, but it seems that my understanding of how all this works is flawed. Since I've posted a bounty, I'll leave this here for someone to post an explanation for how user-space input devices work under the hood.

  • Wireless connection drops when wired computer starts a game.

    - by Skadlig
Starting this week I have had a strange problem on my network. Some background of my setup: Internet is provided by a adsl-modem. A D-link Dir-600 router is hooked up to to adsl-modem. My computer is hooked up to the router using a cat-5 cable. My wife's computer is hooked up using a wireless usb dongle, TP-Link TL-WN821N. Both computers use windows 7 64-bit home premium. Up until this week everything was normal, we could for instance play Dungeons & Dragons Online together without any network issues. Now every time I start DDO or any other network game, for instance L4D, the whole wireless network drops. I have confirmed that it's not just her computer using an Samsung Galaxy Spica android phone. Shutting down the game on my end restores the wireless connection automagicly. My wife can start DDO without the net dropping but if I plug in a wireless network card in my computer and start up the game the connection drops. So it seems like something my computer, and my computer only, does when starting a game makes the wireless connection write a sad note and kill it self but for the life of me I can't figure out what that might be. I could hook her computer up using cat-5 but I would prefer not to do that. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what the problem might be, what I can do to fix it or what I should do to get more data regarding what is happening?

  • Using a named pipe to simulate a serial port on a VMware virtual machine (linux host and client)

    - by Dave M
Trying to write a python program to create a simulated data stream and feed it, through a named pipe, to a VMware virtual machine. The host is running Ubuntu 11.10 and VMware player 5.0.0. The Vm is running Ubuntu netbook 10.04. I am able to get the pipe working on the local machine but I am not able to get the pipe to pass data through the virtual serial port to the programs running on the virtual machine. #!/usr/bin/python import os # # Create a named pipe that will be used as the serial port on a VMware virtual machine SerialPipe = '/tmp/gpsd2NMEA' try: os.unlink(SerialPipe) except: pass os.mkfifo(SerialPipe) # # Open the named pipe NMEApipe = os.open(SerialPipe, os.O_RDWR|os.O_NONBLOCK) # # Write a string to the named pipe NMEAtime = "235959" os.write(NMEApipe, str( '%s\n' % NMEAtime )) Test to see if the python program is working on the host machine (displays 235959 if data is passing through the pipe) $ cat /tmp/gpsd2NMEA 235959 Serial port as defined in the VMware .vmx file: serial0.present = "TRUE" serial0.startConnected = "TRUE" serial0.fileType = "pipe" serial0.fileName = "/tmp/gpsd2NMEA" serial0.pipe.endPoint = "client" serial0.autodetect = "FALSE" serial0.tryNoRxLoss = "TRUE" serial0.yieldOnMsrRead = "TRUE" Test to see if the serial port in the VM is receiving data $ cat /dev/ttyS0 or $ minicom -D /dev/ttyS0 or $ stty -F /dev/ttyS0 cs8 -parenb -cstopb 115200 $ echo < /dev/ttyS0 None of these display any data from the python program.

  • Where is '/host' declared for mount in Wubi (Ubuntu 9.10)?

    - by Pedro
Hi! I'm using Wubi (ubuntu 9.10), and I couldn't find where '/host' mountpoint is declared for mounting. There's no entry in fstab, but it's listed in /proc/mount and mounted at boot time. • Resolving loss of internet bandwidth in home network

    - by Caspar
Recently, I've decided to connect my laptop at home to my modem/router through Ethernet cables built into my apartment. As these built-in Ethernet cables are usable via plugs built into the walls (called powerline adapters), I use some additional cabling (STP CAT6 cables) from my laptop/router to the plugs. In addition, I don't know any technical details about these built-in cables (as they're not visible), only the maximal bandwidth (1 GBit = Cat6?) that they're supporting. The built-in cables are Cat. 5e Ethernet cables. The problem is now that when I set up the connection, I cannot use the full bandwidth that my internet connection is actually offering (100 Mbit/s), only about 85 Mbit/s between 85 - 88 Mbit/s, despite the fact that all cables involved should support the maximal bandwidth. I know from other tests with one of the Ethernet cables in use that I can use almost 99 Mbit/s when I connect my laptop directly to the router/modem using only this one cable. In addition, it is very unlikely that the length of the resulting cable connection from my laptop to my router involving the built-in cables exceeds 100 m. So, what possible reasons for this loss of bandwidth exist? And how I can fix this issue? I hope this might help resolve the issue: The built-in cables appear to be Cat. 5e Ethernet cables. So, is there any problem when I connect Cat6 Ethernet cables directly to Cat5e Ethernet cables via the plugs?

  • How to have a shell script available everywhere I SSH to

    - by aib
I have a shell script which I simply cannot do without: bar from Theiling Online I use SSH a lot and on a variety of *nix servers. However, I am not a system administrator and usually don't have the time or privileges to install it on every server I connect to. It is apparently a very portable sh script and has command line options to export itself as a shell function, which got me thinking: Could I use one of OpenSSH's subjectively obscure features to export it everywhere I go? My first thought was to assign the source to an environment variable like BAR = "cat -v" and then execute it on the other side as `$BAR`, but 1) I can't even get the cat example to to work locally, 2) I don't know how to put the script's actual multiline source into an environment variable and 3) I have yet to see a machine with PermitUserEnvironment enabled. I guess I could even do with an ssh option to write a file called ~/bar at logon, but a more volatile solution would be better. Calling wget http://.../bar at logon would be unacceptable. Any ideas? P.S. Putty-specific solutions, though I doubt any would exist, are also fine.

  • Growing a Linux software RAID5 array

    - by chrismetcalf
On my home file server, I've got a 1.5TB software RAID5 array, built from four 500gb Western Digital drives. I've got a fifth drive that I usually run as a hot spare (but have out of the array at the moment), but if I can I'd like to add that to the array and grow it to 2TB since I'm running out of space. I Googled for guidance, but there seem to be a lot of differing opinions out there (many of them probably now out-of-date) as to whether or not that is possible and/or smart. What's the right way to go about this, or should I start looking into building a new array with more space? • IP routing Solaris 9 access the internet from local network

    - by help_me
I am trying to configure the NICS on the Solaris Sparc server. My problem lies in getting out to the "Internet" from the local network. I have requested the NIC to receive a DHCP server address #ifconfig -interface dhcp start. If anyone could guide me as to what I need to do next. I am not able to ping 4.2.2.2 or access the internet. • Do background processes get a SIGHUP when logging off?

    - by Massimo
This is a followup to this question. I've run some more tests; looks like it really doesn't matter if this is done at the physical console or via SSH, neither does this happen only with SCP; I also tested it with cat /dev/zero > /dev/null. The behaviour is exactly the same: Start a process in the background using & (or put it in background after it's started using CTRL-Z and bg); this is done without using nohup. Log off. Log on again. The process is still there, running happily, and is now a direct child of init. I can confirm both SCP and CAT quits immediately if sent a SIGHUP; I tested this using kill -HUP. So, it really looks like SIGHUP is not sent upon logoff, at least to background processes (can't test with a foreground one for obvious reasons). This happened to me initially with the service console of VMware ESX 3.5 (which is based on RedHat), but I was able to replicate it exactly on CentOS 5.4. The question is, again: shouldn't a SIGHUP be sent to processes, even if they're running in background, upon logging off? Why is this not happening? Edit I checked with strace, as per Kyle's answer. As I was expecting, the process doesn't get any signal when logging off from the shell where it was launched. This happens both when using the server's console and via SSH.

  • setting the PATH for Git (not for me)

    - by Iain
Hi, I'm running OSX 10.6.5 with Git 1.7.1 I have git installed in a non-standard location (though that really should be the standard on a mac;-) in /Library/Frameworks/Git.framework. My own PATH is set fine, git works fine, until... I set up a pre-commit hook with a Ruby script: $ git commit -m "added some Yard documentation" .git/hooks/pre-commit: line 1: #!/usr/bin/env: No such file or directory The pre-commit.sample runs ok, so it appears that git can't find /usr/bin/env, or much else as I've tried shebanging it directly to ruby etc. Just /bin/sh is ok. So, where does Git get it's PATH? because it's not using mine or this wouldn't be happening. And more to the point, how do I get it to see /usr/bin/env ? I've tested the ruby script already, it works. Just to add: $ cat /etc/paths /usr/bin /bin /usr/sbin /sbin /usr/local/bin $ cat /etc/paths.d/git /Library/Frameworks/Git.framework/Programs The first few lines of the Ruby script (which runs via ./pre-commit or ruby pre-commit) #!/usr/bin/env ruby -wKU class String def expand_path File.expand_path self end def parent_dir File.dirname self.expand_path end end

  • Have to run auto-negotiate between clients and switch - "old" switch works fine - "new" switch results in "port flapping"?

    - by ConfusedAboutSwitching
I need some help understanding a problem we're having at work: We run Altiris/Deployment Solution and have to use auto-negotiate between client systems and our switches (Altiris apparently requires this for imaging, PXE boot and other functions). We have several areas with old wiring (Cat 3 & Cat 5) that have old 10/100 Cisco switches in them - and we can set these systems up to "auto/auto" (auto-negotiate on both the NIC and the switch port), and everything has been working fine. But - our networking crew changed out a couple of old switches for 10/100/1000 Cisco switches, and now - they are claiming that "auto/auto" won't work because the switches can't auto-negotiate the way the old 10/100 switches did - and that if we try to set the new gig switches to auto-negotiate, the switch port starts "port flapping", and shuts the port down. But - if we put the old switch back in - they work using "auto/auto" just fine - no port flapping. The networking crew is telling me that the problem is that we're putting "new switches" on "old wire", and that the old cabling can't/won't support the auto-negotiation with these new switches....??? There's something about this that doesn't make sense to me - can someone explain this to me? Or is our networking crew just doing something wrong in the configuration of these new switches? While will the old switches work "auto/auto", but the new switches won't?? HELP!!....and Thanks!! M

  • exim4 seem to stop listening

    - by trakos
Hey, I have a strange problem with my exim4 configuration. I have a dedicated server running debian for quite a long time now, but I'm not really using it actively recently, so everything just worked due to lack of changes ;) However, recently, my exim4 smtp stopped answering on port 25. It does not respond through localhost, as well - even though it's set to listen on any interface available. Some things I've checked: ks:/home/trakos/Maildir/new# netstat -ap | grep exim tcp 0 0 *:smtp : LISTEN 12521/exim4 ks:/home/trakos/Maildir/new# exiwhat 12521 daemon: -q30s, listening for SMTP on port 25 (IPv4) ks:/home/trakos/Maildir/new# cat /var/log/exim4/rejectlog ks:/home/trakos/Maildir/new# cat /var/log/exim4/paniclog The queue is set for 30s only because I was running it in a non-daemon mode to see any output. Strangely enough, no suspicious output is given, netstat even shows it is listening on port 25, but still trying to telnet to it times out. The only things that may have changed recently are: I've got second IP for my server I remember that few days ago my spamassasin crashed, and I've started it up again So yeah, I'm really clueless about this one now :P I mean, I don't even know what could be failing here. Could someone give me some ideas what should I check next? PS: it has uptime of 442 days, so I haven't really tried rebooting it yet ^^

  • Mounted NFS directory not writable by Apache / PHP

    - by phpfour
Need some help here with NFS. Here's what I have (all servers running CentOS 5.6 with SELinux): 172.17.20.1 - Primary server with static IP. Varnish redirects requests to the web servers. 172.17.20.2 - Web server 1 172.17.20.3 - Web server 2 The application residing on the web servers is running Drupal and I need both of them to share the same files directory. I have created a folder in 172.17.20.1 called /var/nfs with root user. Here is my /etc/exports content: /var/nfs 172.17.20.2(rw,sync,no_root_squash) 172.17.20.3(rw,sync,no_root_squash) On both the web servers (172.17.20.2/3), I have it mounted like below: [root@web2 ~]# mount ... 172.17.20.1:/var/nfs on /mnt/nfs/var/nfs type nfs (rw,sync,hard,intr,addr=172.17.20.1) On all the servers, I've added the user apache to the root group to get the desired write access: [root@main ~]# cat /etc/group root:x:0:root,apache .... .... apache:x:48: [root@web1 ~]# cat /etc/group root:x:0:root,apache .... .... apache:x:48: Despite all this, when I try to write files into the /mnt/nfs/var/nfs folder from Drupal/PHP, it cannot write to it. I even tried with a simple PHP upload script but it doesn't work, so the problem is not with Drupal. Any help you guys can do is much appreciated. I've spent hours and hours with it, without any success :( Thanks in advance.
