When it happens I can't run the task manager (or another app), nor the Start menu, and when i try to close an application the title bar shows "Not responding".     The motherboard on my PC (Dell XPS 410) has socket LGA 755 and according to the box on this processor I have, says it requires a motherboard with socket LGA 775. Will this processor work on the 755 motherboard? Edit: After reading further result online, I think I may have been fed some mis-information. According to this thread the XPS comes with socket LGA 755 but on other sites it says that it comes with LGA 775...

  • BIOS says 8GB RAM installed but only 6GB is available

    my machine is a Dell Studio XPS 9100 with 8GB of RAM installed. When I open the BIOS setup and enter the System Info, it shows that my machine got 8GB of RAM installed but only 6GB is available (yes this is from the BIOS only). In Windows 7 (64bit Pro) it shows only 6GB of RAM are available. But if I run CPU-Z then it can detect all 8GB RAM. The machine came pre-configured and I have never opened the case before.

  • Dell 2950 Perc 6/i "physical disk" and "Enclosure(Backplane)" under Connector 1 in OMSA tree- Troubleshoot help

    Just looking for someone who might know why this could occur... In OMSA, on my Dell 2950, there usually is only one "Physical Disks" child under "Enclosure (Backplane)" in the tree view. Currently, the tree looks like this: Dell PERC 6/i Integrated Connector 1 (RAID) Enclosure (Backplane) Physical Disks (1:04 good, 1:05 removed) Physical Disks (1:33 Ready but unused) Normally it's like this: Connector 1 (RAID) Enclosure (Backplane) Physical Disks (1:04 good, 1:05 good) From the front, 6 of 6 3.5" SAS drives are connected. The server is showing Slot 5 as bad and the disk as removed. It seems that the drive in Slot 5 is being sensed as external to the Enclosure. Any ideas why this would happen? Think I can get away with rebuilding the virtual disk by replacing 1:05 with 1:33? Thanks.

  • Reset DRAC to factory defaults

    I put a DRAC that has not been used in a long time into a PowerEdge 1750 running CentOS 5.8. Because we run our DRACs on a separate network, we don't change the password from the default (root/calvin), but evidently someone changed this one. I tried the regular command line reset (racadm racresetcfg), but I get the following error: ERROR: Unable to perform requested operation. If the operation attempted was to configure DRAC, possible reason may be that Local Configuration using RACADM is disabled. This implies to me that racadm is able to communicate, but there is a setting on the DRAC that is preventing it from working. I was not able to find any references to this error in any Dell documentation. Has anyone seen this problem and/or know what I can do about it? (The DRAC is useless is I can't log in to it.)

    In theory, could I upgrade a mPGA604-socket motherboard with a Prestonia processor to some Intel Xeon processor with 64-bit? I've got a Dell PowerEdge 1750 with dual 2.8GHz Xeon processors running my Windows Home Server machine. I want to upgrade to the upcoming Vail release, but it is 64-bit only. The processors are Prestonia-core, which is pre-64bit, but I was wondering if it was possible to swap in some pin-compatible later generation processor. According to wikipedia, the mPGA604-socket continues to be used for several later generations that do have same pinout. So, IN THEORY, could I swap in a 64-bit, like a Nocona-core?

  • What does 1080p mean in laptop resolution?

    Dell is selling a laptop (Studio 15) where the options for screen resolution are 720p, 900p, and 1080p. What do they mean? I've found a Wikipedia entry that lists the old confusing (UXGA, WUXGA, &c) names and seems to indicate that 1080p might be 1920x1080. It has no information on 900p or 720p. Really, it was bad enough with the WUXGA style descriptions. I think vendors should tell you what they're selling. If you know what the screen resolutions are, I'd appreciate hearing it here.

  • How can I fix a computer that blue screens before Windows starts?

    I have a Dell Inspiron running Windows 7 that keeps getting blue screens of death. At first, the computer slowed down so much it was unusable. After some time, it wouldn't even load Windows anymore; the machine just started going straight to a BSOD after the starting Windows logo. I have tried loading the reset disc, but it just takes me to a loading lobby and never advances. I don't need the files on the computer, but I do need the machine for school. What can I do?

  • Can I rebuild degraded RAID1 on a SAS 5 i controller with a larger mirror drive size?

    A drive failed on a Dell SAS 5i controller - see controller bios screengrab: http://imagebin.ca/view/SkZbszA.html The primary is a 160GB 10k sata drive. I added a 250GB 7k rpm drive in the hope that the array would rebuild onto this drive. This did not happen. (assuming that the controller would just operate at the speed of the slowest drive) The controller could see the new drive, but it didn't automatically rebuild the raid1 onto this drive. (my assumption is that it did not do this rebuild as the drive sizes are different). There was an option to add the new drive to the existing raid1 array - but when I tried this a message appeared stating that all data on the array would be lost. (I didn't get a screenshot of this message, I will later) Should the SAS 5i allow me to rebuild the array onto a larger drive? Is the option to add the drive to the array the right way to go?   • Disable laptop screen

    I recently had the display fail on my Dell Inspiron E1505 laptop. I currently have my TV hooked up to the laptop's S-Video out which works fine as long as I'm running in Windows. For the first minute or so when the computer is booting I get no display. I was wondering if there was any way to disable the laptop screen entirely so that the TV display is active from the beginning (not just after Windows loads). I realize there may be a BIOS setting for this, my only problem is I can't see the BIOS settings screen since no display is active at that point so if anyone has any BIOS setting solutions I'd need the exact keystrokes to hit :)

  • Getting around the lack of GPT support with CentOS 5.4

    Here is my issue and I hoping that there is someone out there that has an answer so I don't end up stuck here at my co-location all day. Last night I came here and upgraded a server (Dell 2970) to have four 1TB Hard Drives in RAID 5 which leaves a 3TB block. I tried to partition this but keep getting an error that GPT is not supported so I found a site online telling me I need to run the dd command and right random data to /dev/sda. This is great (if it works) but taking forever. I have two more machines to upgrade today and not a chair in site. Does anyone have advice on how I can avoid this issue beforehand?     When attempting to set MemOpMode or ProcVirtualization with syscfg.exe, I get the following error: C:\Users\EGr>syscfg --MemOpMode=AdvEccMode System Services or CSIOR disabled In the past, I have been told that this can be resolved by forcefully reinstalling the Dell Lifecycle controller firmware, and then trying again; however, I cannot find my notes on how to do that. Has anyone ever run into this issue, and does anyone know how I can fix it? If it is possible to forcefully reinstall the firmware, how would I do that? I've tried running the installer, but it fails after running for ~2 min. I believe there is a way to fix this as well, by adding/modifying a registry value at HKLM\System\Control\CurrentControlSet\Services\IPMIDRV (that might not be the correct path, but I know it is IPMIDRV). Is this a common issue? What is the actual cause of it?

    I own an older 32-bit Dell XPS 410 that I intended to use for gaming. Currently, I have a ATI Radeon 4000 series card installed, along with a Core 2 Duo and Ubuntu 12.10. I'm fairly certain that my problem is a GPU failure - but before I spend money on a new one, I want to make sure other components aren't the problem/if it would be cheaper just to buy a new PC. Here are my symptoms: Computer power button remains orange (usually green when successfully started.) A fan gets increasingly faster until powered off. Monitor remains black when started, receiving no signal. When powered on, the computer will power itself off near instantly, and then turn on again. If startup is successful, sometimes the screen will become jittered and unusable unless restarted. Is this just a GPU failure, or something more extensive like the motherboard?

    I have an issue with a Dell Inspiron 15 (1545) laptop that refuses to open any applications (save select Microsoft programs, e.g. Security Essentials, Ctrl Panel, Windows Explorer (not Internet), regedit, Event Viewer, etc.). I've run Microsoft Memory Diagnostics Tool and it found a 'hardware problem was detected.' Does this indicate that the RAM has failed? I notice when I open programs like Word, Excel, Internet Explorer, etc., it always give me an error from WerFault.exe saying The instruction at xxxxxxx referenced memory at xxxxxxxxx. The memory could not be written. and sometimes something about illegal instructions. If it is a hardware problem, does this mean that replacing the RAM is my only option? Again, I would also like to know if RAM can fail (like hard drives) and if malware can cause RAM to fail also.

In the specifications, I found this about the hard drive: 30GB ATA-100; (4200RPM); 40GB ATA-100 (5400RPM); 60GB ATA-100 (4200RPM) *Optional 40GB (5400) 2nd HDD Module for media bay I'm familiar with SATA and IDE, but ATA-100 doesn't ring a bell. What do I have to take into account when I go look for a replacement hard drive?

  • How to use auto-discovery with iDRAC Enterprise?

    All I want to do is: have "auto discovery" enabled on my iDRAC enterprise at the factory rack the server, cable iDRAC to dhcp-enabled management network have the iDRAC DHCP, find the "Provisioning Server", and get updated with login credentials (for us to use with racadm, idrac webui, etc.) I don't need to do any configuring of the system, install OS, or anything else. I just want idrac to dhcp out of the box, and end up with an account that can be used to login. All the docs I can find on Dell's site refer to a "Provisioning Server", but I honestly can't tell if they have some reference product, or if they only have software that "integrates" with other vendor's existing management systems. I'd be happy to set up whatever is needed, I just can't find something that explicitly describes the process (only references to the fact that it is supported).

  • Slight network lag on Small Business Server 2008 R2

    I recently upgraded a network from a SBS 2003 server to a SBS 2008 R2 Server. Both I and users have noticed a slight delay in network applications and browsing network drives on the new server. It is minor, maybe a second or two at most. However I am wondering if anyone knows of anyway to optimize the networking to service requests sooner to the workstations. The network is running a 1 gig network with some 100 meg devices (mainly network printers). All workstations are XP SP3 Network software runs out of a shared folder mapped as a network drive, no sql databases. Server is a Dell Poweredge T610 with plenty of ram, cpu power, and storage.

  • Cannot login to OpenManage Server Administrator

    After freshly installed OpenManage Server Administrator from the CD that comes with my new server, Dell PowerEdge T110, I still could not figure out how to login successfully to the application. The server is running Windows 2008 SR2 Foundation and serves as a domain controller. I access its web interface locally using Firefox 3.6. On the login page and choose local system login. OMSA user's guide seems to state that I should be able to login using an Active Directory user. I tried Administrator, my_domain\Administrator, a a few combinations with the correct password. But none of them can logged in. Does Server Administrator requires any additional treatment to the user accounts, or what are the steps I missed here?
