• Apache spawning one process a day, what causes it?

- by xtrimsky
I have a PHP server running, with cron jobs etc... And once a day (between midnight and 3am), apache spawns one process that never ends. The server is a virtual server, so in a couple of days it eats up the whole memory. Is there a way to figure out what is crashing ? What php script isn't finishing ? Or what url via apache was triggered ? I have tried looking on the access logs, errors logs, but didn't find anything unusual. Thank you

• Why no final dot for domain names?

- by user41150
I recently learned that a fully qualified domain name ends in a dot, e.g. www.microsoft.com.. Why do I almost never see this? We casually toss around www.microsoft.com, a relative domain name, without a second thought. It's not mere pedantry, because it seems there's a security issue: someone in your network could create www.microsoft.com.example.com. to hijack your requests to www.microsoft.com. Why doesn't the internet community have a tradition of using genuinely fully qualified domain names?

• Windows 7 Laptop, cursor jumping after typing the letters "y" or "t" [closed]

- by Dave K
My wife has an HP laptop running windows 7. She has a very frustrating problem when typing: in some, but not all cases, typing the letter's "y" or "t" will cause the cursor to jump back a few lines or some number of words. The result is that she ends up typing over whatever it was that she was working on. (as a matter of fact, I just experienced this while typing this question on her computer with the phrase: "typing the letter..." above.) I've installed the latest drivers for her touchpad from Synaptic and disabled tap touching and gesture features to rule out simple unintended mouse clicks. Still the "y" and "t" keys continue to cause problems.

• nginx block URI request but allow internal directory

- by Mike Anders
I'm new to nginx from apache. I'm trying to simply block the URIs: /_mydir/* = / (redirect) But, I want to rewrite: /ex/(.*)$ = /_mydir/$1 I have tried: location /ex/ { rewrite ^/ex/(.*)$ /_mydir/$1 last; } location /_mydir { rewrite ^/_mydir/(.*)$ http://$http_host/ redirect; } But what always happens is once I block the '/_mydir' directory the rewrite is also blocked. I have also tried: location /_mydir/ { internal; } This also ends up blocking the rewrite. All help is greatly appreciated, thanks. UPDATE: I fixed this problem using: rewrite ^/ex/(.*)$ /_mydir/$1 break;

• Remote desktop connection dos not respond anymore (no more task bar)

- by Bronzato
I have a remote desktop connection (from my home) to the company's server. On this I opened a Remote Desktop Connection Manager and inside this connect to a specific server. I was busy copying a file but this task never ends. So I kill the process and now I have a blue screen and no more taskbar. Very frustrating. When I try CTRL+ALT+END (=CTRL+ALT+DEL) this is executed on the main server and not the server which gives me the blue screen. I don't know if I'm clear. I know I should have keep Task Manager open and type Run... explorer.exe but I closed it. Any help is really appreciated!

• Why does FIND on Windows 7 give an "Access Denied" error?

- by rann
Hi All, I have an administrator account on a Windows 7 x64 machine. It is not THE administrator account, the account is simply a member of the administrators group. The install is default. When the user opens a command prompt it ends up in the users' %HOMEPATH% directory where you'll find various directories like the Documents folder. If the user uses the following (windows) FIND command, an "Access Denied" error occurs: FIND /I "My String" C:\Users\Rann\Documents Access denied - C:\USERS\RANN\DOCUMENTS Using runas or right-clicking on the command prompt to run it as an administrator does not change this behaviour; an administrator-level cmd.exe still gives me the same error. Changing the path to any other directory gives the same error. My question is thus: How is one supposed to use the FIND (and possibly other) commands? What rights are needed?

• Turn 2 USB type A ports (receptacles) into an extension cable with 2 type A receptacles using Linux?

- by Tianyang Li
I'm currently trying to connect 2 USB devices together, but both ends are type A plugs. Before I buy a physical extension cords with 2 type A receptacles, I'd like to know if I can connect these 2 devices together at all by passing data "transparently" through a Linux box with = 2 USB ports. I'm actually trying to connect a keyboard to an Android phone, and I want to first try if it can work by using a Linux box as a "virtual" USB extension cord. Has anybody done something like this before? Thanks!

• How can I move the Windows 7 Preview Pane to the bottom?

- by Rich Bennema
When searching for files in Windows Explorer, I like to use the Preview Pane to determine if it is the file I was looking for. But with the Preview Pane on the right hand side, either the preview is squished and unreadable or I need to make the Preview Pane wider which ends up hiding a lot of search information. Is there a way to move the Preview Pane to the bottom of the screen. I would rather see less lines in the preview and less files in the search results but be able to see (and read) all of what is being shown.

• Linking LLVM JIT Code to Static LLVM Libraries?

- by inflector
I'm in the process of implementing a cross-platform (Mac OS X, Windows, and Linux) application which will do lots of CPU intensive analysis of financial data. The bulk of the analysis engine will be written in C++ for speed reasons, with a user-accessible scripting engine interfacing with the C++ testing engine. I want to write several scripting front-ends over time to emulate other popular software with existing large user bases. The first front will be a VisualBasic-like scripting language. I'm thinking that LLVM would be perfect for my needs. Performance is very important because of the sheer amount of data; it can take hours or days to run a single run of tests to get an answer. I believe that using LLVM will also allow me to use a single back-end solution while I implement different front-ends for different flavors of the scripting language over time. The testing engine itself will be separated from the interface and testing will even take place in a separate process with progress and results being reported to the testing management interface. Tests will consist of scripting code integrated with the testing engine code. In a previous implementation of a similar commercial testing system I wrote, I built a fast interpreter which easily interfaced with the testing library because it was written in C++ and linked directly to the testing engine library. Callbacks from scripting code to testing library objects involved translating between the formats with significant overhead. I'm imagining that with LLVM, I could implement the callbacks into C++ directly so that I could make the scripting code work almost as if it had been written in C++. Likewise, if all the code was compiled to LLVM byte-code format, it seems like the LLVM optimizers could optimize across the boundaries between the scripting language and the testing engine code that was written in C++. I don't want to have to compile the testing engine every time. Ideally, I'd like to JIT compile only the scripting code. For small tests, I'd skip some optimization passes, while for large tests, I'd perform full optimizations during the link. So is this possible? Can I precompile the testing engine to a .o object file or .a library file and then link in the scripting code using the JIT? Finally, ideally, I'd like to have the scripting code implement specific methods as subclasses for a specific C++ class. So the C++ testing engine would only see C++ objects while the JIT setup code compiled scripting code that implemented some of the methods for the objects. It seems that if I used the right name mangling algorithm it would be relatively easy to set up the LLVM generation for the scripting language to look like a C++ method call which could then be linked into the testing engine. Thus the linking stage would go in two directions, calls from the scripting language into the testing engine objects to retrieve pricing information and test state information and calls from the testing engine of methods of some particular C++ objects where the code was supplied not from C++ but from the scripting language. In summary: 1) Can I link in precompiled (either .bc, .o, or .a) files as part of the JIT compilation, code-generation process? 2) Can I link in code using that the process in 1) above in such a way that I am able to create code that acts as if it was all written in C++?

• Help with specific Regex: need to match multiple instances of multiple formats in a single string.

- by KevenK
I apologize for the terrible title...it can be hard to try to summarize an entire situation into a single sentence. Let me start by saying that I'm asking because I'm just not a Regex expert. I've used it a bit here and there, but I just come up short with the correct way to meet the following requirements. The Regex that I'm attempting to write is for use in an XML schema for input validation, and used elsewhere in Javascript for the same purpose. There are two different possible formats that are supported. There is a literal string, which must be surrounded by quotation marks, and a Hex-value string which must be surrounded by braces. Some test cases: "this is a literal string" <-- Valid string, enclosed properly in "s "this should " still be correct" <-- Valid string, "s are allowed within (if possible, this requirement could be forgiven if necessary) "{00 11 22}" <-- Valid string, {}'s allow in strings. Another one that can be forgiven if necessary I am bad output <-- Invalid string, no "s "Some more problemss"you know <-- Invalid string, must be fully contained in "s {0A 68 4F 89 AC D2} <-- Valid string, hex characters enclosed in {}s {DDFF1234} <-- Valid string, spaces are ignored for Hex strings DEADBEEF <-- Invalid string, must be contained in either "s or {}s {0A 12 ZZ} <-- Invalid string, 'Z' is not a valid Hex character To satisfy these general requirements, I had come up with the following Regex that seems to work well enough. I'm still fairly new to Regex, so there could be a huge hole here that I'm missing.: ".+"|\{([0-9]|[a-f]|[A-F]| )+\} If I recall correctly, the XML Schema regex automatically assumes beginning and end of line (^ and $ respectively). So, essentially, this regex accepts any string that starts and ends with a ", or starts and ends with {}s and contains only valid Hexidecimal characters. This has worked well for me so far except that I had forgotten about another (although less common, and thus forgotten) input option that completely breaks my regex. Where I made my mistake: Valid input should also allow a user to separate valid strings (of either type, literal/hex) by a comma. This means that a single string should be able to contain more than one of the above valid strings, separated by commas. Luckily, however, a comma is not a supported character within a literal string (although I see that my existing regex does not care about commas). Example test cases: "some string",{0A F1} <-- Valid {1122},{face},"peanut butter" <-- Valid {0D 0A FF FE},"string",{FF FFAC19 85} <-- Valid (Spaces don't matter in Hex values) "Validation is allowed to break, if a comma is found not separating values",{0d 0a} <-- Invalid, comma is a delimiter, but "Validation is allowed to break" and "if a comma..." are not marked as separate strings with "s hi mom,"hello" <-- Invalid, String1 was not enclosed properly in "s or {}s My thoughts are that it is possible to use commas as a delimiter to check each "section" of the string to match a regex similar to the original, but I just am not that advanced in regex yet to come up with a solution on my own. Any help would be appreciated, but ultimately a final solution with an explanation would just stellar. Thanks for reading this huge wall of text!

• C++/msvc6 application crashes due to heap corruption, any hints?

- by David Alfonso
Hello all, let me say first that I'm writing this question after months of trying to find out the root of a crash happening in our application. I'll try to detail as much as possible what I've already found out about it. About the application It runs on Windows XP Professional SP2. It's built with Microsoft Visual C++ 6.0 with Service Pack 6. It's MFC based. It uses several external dlls (e.g. Xerces, ZLib or ACE). It has high performance requirements. It does a lot of network and hard disk I/O, but it's also cpu intensive. It has an exception handling mechanism which generates a minidump when an unhandled exception occurs. Facts about the crash It only happens on multiprocessor/multicore machines and under heavy loads of work. It happens at random (neither we nor our client have found a pattern yet). We cannot reproduce the crash on our testing lab. It only happens on some production systems (but always in multicore machines) It always ends up crashing at the same point, although the complete stack is not always the same. Let me add the stack of the crashing thread (obtained using WinDbg, sorry we don't have symbols) ChildEBP RetAddr Args to Child WARNING: Stack unwind information not available. What I have tried so far Reviewing all the code related to the point where the crash ends happening. Trying to enable pageheap on our testing lab though nothing useful has been found by now. We have substituted the std::list for a C array and then it crashes in other part of the code (although it is related code, it's not in the code where the old list resided). Coincidentally, now it crashes in another erase, though this time of a std::multiset. Let me copy the stack contained in the dump: ntdll.dll!_RtlpCoalesceFreeBlocks@16() + 0x124e bytes ntdll.dll!_RtlFreeHeap@12() + 0x91f bytes msvcrt.dll!_free() + 0xc3 bytes MyApplication.exe!006a4fda() [Frames below may be incorrect and/or missing, no symbols loaded for MyApplication.exe] MyApplication.exe!0069f305() ntdll.dll!_NtFreeVirtualMemory@16() + 0xc bytes ntdll.dll!_RtlpSecMemFreeVirtualMemory@16() + 0x1b bytes ntdll.dll!_ZwWaitForSingleObject@12() + 0xc bytes ntdll.dll!_RtlpFreeToHeapLookaside@8() + 0x26 bytes ntdll.dll!_RtlFreeHeap@12() + 0x114 bytes msvcrt.dll!_free() + 0xc3 bytes c5ffffff() Possible solutions (that I'm aware of) which cannot be applied "Migrate the application to a newer compiler": We are working on this but It's not a solution at the moment. "Enable pageheap (normal or full)": We can't enable pageheap on production machines as this affects performance heavily. I think that's all I remember now, if I have forgotten something I'll add it asap. If you can give me some hint or propose some possible solution, don't hesitate to answer! Thank you in advance for your time and advice.

• COM port read - Thread remains alive after timeout occurs

- by Sna
Hello to all. I have a dll which includes a function called ReadPort that reads data from serial COM port, written in c/c++. This function is called within an extra thread from another WINAPI function using the _beginthreadex. When COM port has data to be read, the worker thread returns the data, ends normaly, the calling thread closes the worker's thread handle and the dll works fine. However, if ReadPort is called without data pending on the COM port, when timeout occurs then WaitForSingleObject returns WAIT_TIMEOUT but the worker thread never ends. As a result, virtual memory grows at about 1 MB every time, physical memory grows some KBs and the application that calls the dll becomes unstable. I also tryied to use TerminateThread() but i got the same results. I have to admit that although i have enough developing experience, i am not familiar with c/c++. I did a lot of research before posting but unfortunately i didn't manage to solve my problem. Does anyone have a clue on how could i solve this problem? However, I really want to stick to this kind of solution. Also, i want to mention that i think i can't use any global variables to use some kind of extra events, because each dll's functions may be called many times for every COM port. I post some parts of my code below: The Worker Thread: unsigned int __stdcall ReadPort(void* readstr){ DWORD dwError; int rres;DWORD dwCommModemStatus, dwBytesTransferred; int ret; char szBuff[64] = ""; ReadParams* params = (ReadParams*)readstr; ret = SetCommMask(params->param2, EV_RXCHAR | EV_CTS | EV_DSR | EV_RLSD | EV_RING); if (ret == 0) { _endthreadex(0); return -1; } ret = WaitCommEvent(params->param2, &dwCommModemStatus, 0); if (ret == 0) { _endthreadex(0); return -2; } ret = SetCommMask(params->param2, EV_RXCHAR | EV_CTS | EV_DSR | EV_RLSD| EV_RING); if (ret == 0) { _endthreadex(0); return -3; } if (dwCommModemStatus & EV_RXCHAR||dwCommModemStatus & EV_RLSD) { rres = ReadFile(params->param2, szBuff, 64, &dwBytesTransferred,NULL); if (rres == 0) { switch (dwError = GetLastError()) { case ERROR_HANDLE_EOF: _endthreadex(0); return -4; } _endthreadex(0); return -5; } else { strcpy(params->param1,szBuff); _endthreadex(0); return 0; } } else { _endthreadex(0); return 0; } _endthreadex(0); return 0;} The Calling Thread: int WINAPI StartReadThread(HANDLE porthandle, HWND windowhandle){ HANDLE hThread; unsigned threadID; ReadParams readstr; DWORD ret, ret2; readstr.param2 = porthandle; hThread = (HANDLE)_beginthreadex( NULL, 0, ReadPort, &readstr, 0, &threadID ); ret = WaitForSingleObject(hThread, 500); if (ret == WAIT_OBJECT_0) { CloseHandle(hThread); if (readstr.param1 != NULL) // Send message to GUI return 0; } else if (ret == WAIT_TIMEOUT) { ret2 = CloseHandle(hThread); return -1; } else { ret2 = CloseHandle(hThread); if (ret2 == 0) return -2; }} Thank you in advance, Sna.

• Entity Association Mapping with Code First Part 1 : Mapping Complex Types

- by mortezam
Last week the CTP5 build of the new Entity Framework Code First has been released by data team at Microsoft. Entity Framework Code-First provides a pretty powerful code-centric way to work with the databases. When it comes to associations, it brings ultimate flexibility. I’m a big fan of the EF Code First approach and am planning to explain association mapping with code first in a series of blog posts and this one is dedicated to Complex Types. If you are new to Code First approach, you can find a great walkthrough here. In order to build a solid foundation for our discussion, we will start by learning about some of the core concepts around the relationship mapping. What is Mapping?Mapping is the act of determining how objects and their relationships are persisted in permanent data storage, in our case, relational databases. What is Relationship mapping?A mapping that describes how to persist a relationship (association, aggregation, or composition) between two or more objects. Types of RelationshipsThere are two categories of object relationships that we need to be concerned with when mapping associations. The first category is based on multiplicity and it includes three types: One-to-one relationships: This is a relationship where the maximums of each of its multiplicities is one. One-to-many relationships: Also known as a many-to-one relationship, this occurs when the maximum of one multiplicity is one and the other is greater than one. Many-to-many relationships: This is a relationship where the maximum of both multiplicities is greater than one. The second category is based on directionality and it contains two types: Uni-directional relationships: when an object knows about the object(s) it is related to but the other object(s) do not know of the original object. To put this in EF terminology, when a navigation property exists only on one of the association ends and not on the both. Bi-directional relationships: When the objects on both end of the relationship know of each other (i.e. a navigation property defined on both ends). How Object Relationships Are Implemented in POCO domain models? When the multiplicity is one (e.g. 0..1 or 1) the relationship is implemented by defining a navigation property that reference the other object (e.g. an Address property on User class). When the multiplicity is many (e.g. 0..*, 1..*) the relationship is implemented via an ICollection of the type of other object. How Relational Database Relationships Are Implemented? Relationships in relational databases are maintained through the use of Foreign Keys. A foreign key is a data attribute(s) that appears in one table and must be the primary key or other candidate key in another table. With a one-to-one relationship the foreign key needs to be implemented by one of the tables. To implement a one-to-many relationship we implement a foreign key from the “one table” to the “many table”. We could also choose to implement a one-to-many relationship via an associative table (aka Join table), effectively making it a many-to-many relationship. Introducing the ModelNow, let's review the model that we are going to use in order to implement Complex Type with Code First. It's a simple object model which consist of two classes: User and Address. Each user could have one billing address. The Address information of a User is modeled as a separate class as you can see in the UML model below: In object-modeling terms, this association is a kind of aggregation—a part-of relationship. Aggregation is a strong form of association; it has some additional semantics with regard to the lifecycle of objects. In this case, we have an even stronger form, composition, where the lifecycle of the part is fully dependent upon the lifecycle of the whole. Fine-grained domain models The motivation behind this design was to achieve Fine-grained domain models. In crude terms, fine-grained means “more classes than tables”. For example, a user may have both a billing address and a home address. In the database, you may have a single User table with the columns BillingStreet, BillingCity, and BillingPostalCode along with HomeStreet, HomeCity, and HomePostalCode. There are good reasons to use this somewhat denormalized relational model (performance, for one). In our object model, we can use the same approach, representing the two addresses as six string-valued properties of the User class. But it’s much better to model this using an Address class, where User has the BillingAddress and HomeAddress properties. This object model achieves improved cohesion and greater code reuse and is more understandable. Complex Types: Splitting a Table Across Multiple Types Back to our model, there is no difference between this composition and other weaker styles of association when it comes to the actual C# implementation. But in the context of ORM, there is a big difference: A composed class is often a candidate Complex Type. But C# has no concept of composition—a class or property can’t be marked as a composition. The only difference is the object identifier: a complex type has no individual identity (i.e. no AddressId defined on Address class) which make sense because when it comes to the database everything is going to be saved into one single table. How to implement a Complex Types with Code First Code First has a concept of Complex Type Discovery that works based on a set of Conventions. The convention is that if Code First discovers a class where a primary key cannot be inferred, and no primary key is registered through Data Annotations or the fluent API, then the type will be automatically registered as a complex type. Complex type detection also requires that the type does not have properties that reference entity types (i.e. all the properties must be scalar types) and is not referenced from a collection property on another type. Here is the implementation: public class User{ public int UserId { get; set; } public string FirstName { get; set; } public string LastName { get; set; } public string Username { get; set; } public Address Address { get; set; }} public class Address { public string Street { get; set; } public string City { get; set; } public string PostalCode { get; set; } }public class EntityMappingContext : DbContext { public DbSet<User> Users { get; set; } } With code first, this is all of the code we need to write to create a complex type, we do not need to configure any additional database schema mapping information through Data Annotations or the fluent API. Database SchemaThe mapping result for this object model is as follows: Limitations of this mappingThere are two important limitations to classes mapped as Complex Types: Shared references is not possible: The Address Complex Type doesn’t have its own database identity (primary key) and so can’t be referred to by any object other than the containing instance of User (e.g. a Shipping class that also needs to reference the same User Address). No elegant way to represent a null reference There is no elegant way to represent a null reference to an Address. When reading from database, EF Code First always initialize Address object even if values in all mapped columns of the complex type are null. This means that if you store a complex type object with all null property values, EF Code First returns a initialized complex type when the owning entity object is retrieved from the database. SummaryIn this post we learned about fine-grained domain models which complex type is just one example of it. Fine-grained is fully supported by EF Code First and is known as the most important requirement for a rich domain model. Complex type is usually the simplest way to represent one-to-one relationships and because the lifecycle is almost always dependent in such a case, it’s either an aggregation or a composition in UML. In the next posts we will revisit the same domain model and will learn about other ways to map a one-to-one association that does not have the limitations of the complex types. • Kill your temp tables using keyboard shortcuts : SSMS

- by jamiet
Here’s a nifty little SSMS trick that my colleague Tom Hunter educated me on the other day and I thought it was worth sharing. If you’re a keyboard shortcut junkie then you’ll love it. How often when working with code in SSMS that contains temp tables do you see the following message: Msg 2714, Level 16, State 6, Line 78 There is already an object named '#table' in the database. Quite often I would imagine, it happens to me all the time! Usually I write a bit of code at the top of the query window that goes and drops the table if it exists but there’s a much easier way of dealing with it. Remember that temp tables disappear as soon as your sessions ends hence wouldn’t it be nice if there were a quick way of recycling (i.e. stopping and restarting) your session? Well turns out there is and all it takes is a sequence of 4 keystrokes: Bring up the context menu using that mythically-named button that usually sits 3 to the right of the space bar ‘C’ for “Connection” ‘H’ for “Change Connection…” ‘Enter’ to select the same connection you had open last time (screenshots below) Once you’ve done it a few times you’ll probably have the whole sequence down to less than a second. Such a simple little trick, I’m annoyed with myself for it not occurring to me before! The only caveat is that you’ll need a “USE <database>” directive at the top of your query window but I don’t think that’s much of a bind! That is all other than to say if you like little SSMS titbits like this then Lee Everest’s blog is a good one to keep an eye on! @jamiet Share this post: email it! | bookmark it! | digg it! | reddit! | kick it! | live it!

• Oracle Service Bus JMS Deployments Utility by Mike Muller

- by JuergenKress
For proxy services utilizing the JMS transport, OSB receives messages from destinations by using an MDB. These MDBs get generated and deployed during activation of the service configuration. OSB creates a random, unique name for the J2EE application that gets deployed to WLS. The name starts with “_ALSB_” and ends in a unique series of digits. The EAR files are written to the sbgen subdirectory of the domain home directory. You will see these applications on the WLS console page for “Deployments”. For various operational reasons, there are times when the application name for a given proxy service needs to be determined. Since the generated name of the application doesn’t reflect the name of the service, it becomes difficult to determine the relationship between the service and its EAR file. In fact, it can not be discerned from either the OSB or WLS consoles.Read the full article here. • SSIS – Delete all files except for the most recent one

- by jorg
Quite often one or more sources for a data warehouse consist of flat files. Most of the times these files are delivered as a zip file with a date in the file name, for example FinanceDataExport_20100528.zip Currently I work at a project that does a full load into the data warehouse every night. A zip file with some flat files in it is dropped in a directory on a daily basis. Sometimes there are multiple zip files in the directory, this can happen because the ETL failed or somebody puts a new zip file in the directory manually. Because the ETL isn’t incremental only the most recent file needs to be loaded. To implement this I used the simple code below; it checks which file is the most recent and deletes all other files. Note: In a previous blog post I wrote about unzipping zip files within SSIS, you might also find this useful: SSIS – Unpack a ZIP file with the Script Task Public Sub Main() 'Use this piece of code to loop through a set of files in a directory 'and delete all files except for the most recent one based on a date in the filename. 'File name example: 'DataExport_20100413.zip Dim rootDirectory As New DirectoryInfo(Dts.Variables("DirectoryFromSsisVariable").Value.ToString) Dim mostRecentFile As String = "" Dim currentFileDate As Integer Dim mostRecentFileDate As Integer = 0 'Check which file is the most recent For Each fi As FileInfo In rootDirectory.GetFiles("*.zip") currentFileDate = CInt(Left(Right(fi.Name, 12), 8)) 'Get date from current filename (based on a file that ends with: YYYYMMDD.zip) If currentFileDate > mostRecentFileDate Then mostRecentFileDate = currentFileDate mostRecentFile = fi.Name End If Next 'Delete all files except the most recent one For Each fi As FileInfo In rootDirectory.GetFiles("*.zip") If fi.Name <> mostRecentFile Then File.Delete(rootDirectory.ToString + "\" + fi.Name) End If Next Dts.TaskResult = ScriptResults.Success End Sub Share this post: email it! | bookmark it! | digg it! | reddit! | kick it! | live it!

• Unable to suspend with FGLRX enabled

- by schmmd
I am unable to suspend in a fully updated (as of yesterday, 29 March 2011) Ubuntu 10.10 installation (kernel 2.6.35-28). Following is a list of some of my hardware: Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R Video: Radeon HD-567X-YNF3 Initially, when I went to either Suspend or Hibernate the machine would almost go into suspend, but it would never power down. Instead it would bounce back to the login screen. This was due to a problem with the USB3 ports being unable to suspend (noticed this in /var/log/kern.log). Disabling the USB3 ports in the BIOS fixed this issue. Now Suspend and Hibernate power down the machine. It successfully awakens from Hibernate. However, it will not return from suspend. The mouse and keyboard are not powered and the monitor has no signal. These devices are still not powered after a restart. I must power-cycle the machine. The pm-suspend log ends after it states that it entered suspend (i.e. there is no information any resume code running). I discovered that acpitool -s suspends the machine and resumes successfully exactly once. The second time the machine will not resume. I am not sure how these two tools handle suspend differently. UPDATE: the problem was introduced somewhere between 2.6.35-22 and 2.6.35-28. I have both kernels install presently. Suspend works fine with 2.6.35-22 but not with 2.6.38-28.

• You Might Be a SharePoint Professional If…

- by Mark Rackley
I really think no explanation is needed. Hope this makes you smile.. Thanks again for being an awesome SharePoint community! If you can only dream about working an 8 hour day, there’s a good chance you are a SharePoint professional. You might be a SharePoint professional if the last time you heard “Old MacDonald Had a Farm” you wondered “How many web front ends does it have?” If you consider Twitter the best form of support since the dawn of the Internet, you might be a SharePoint professional. If you are giddy-as-a-school-girl excited about going to Anaheim in October and it has NOTHING to do with Disneyland, you might be a SharePoint professional. You might be a SharePoint professional if you own more SharePoint shirts than you do pairs of underwear. If you’ve thought of giving up a career in the IT world for a job taking orders at a fast food chain, you might be a SharePoint professional. You might be a SharePoint professional if the only people who understand the words that come out of your mouth are other SharePoint people. If you put the word “Share” or “SP” in front of EVERYTHING (ShareFood, SPRunner, etc… etc…) then you might be a SharePoint professional. You are probably a SharePoint professional if you love SharePoint.. you hate SharePoint… you love SharePoint… you hate SharePoint… If the only thing you’d rather do more than SharePoint is SharePint, then you are definitely a SharePoint professional. You might be a SharePoint professional if your idea of name dropping is “Andrew Connell says…” or “According to Todd Klindt”… or even “Well, when I was stuck in a Turkish prison with Joel Oleson…”

• Different Means Better with the new Windows Phone Developer Experience

- by Nikita Polyakov
If you are interested in the building mobile applications or have been in the past you might want to check out this blog post: Charlie Kindel - Different Means Better with the new Windows Phone Developer Experience What does this mean? Let me take some out takes and highlight them for you. It won’t come as a surprise to many to learn that the Windows Phone 7 developer experience builds upon the following GIANTS (among others): .NET Silverlight XNA platform Microsoft’s developer tools Web 2.0 standards and To enable the fantastic user experiences you’ve seen in the Windows Phone 7 Series demos so far we’ve had to break from the past. To deliver what developers expect in the developer platform we’ve had to change how phone apps were written. One result of this is previous Windows mobile applications will not run on Windows Phone 7 Series. To be clear, we will continue to work with our partners to deliver new devices based on Windows Mobile 6.5 and will support those products for many years to come, so it’s not as though one line ends as soon as the other begins. Once again, more details at MIX10. Start watching the @WP7Dev twitter account for more info.

• Copy or Export Byobu screen?

- by kmassada
One of the best things about byobu is the scrollback feature in a given session. I have been working on something, and I have tons of lines in the current scrollback session and I want to copy everything to a file, how to?? According to the screen home page, looks like you can do this? but when I'm done I do a search for all those files, can't find them. C-a h (hardcopy) Write a hardcopy of the current window to the file "hardcopy.n". C-a H (log) Begins/ends logging of the current window to the file "screenlog.n". For the screen commands to work, I have to be in screen mode, I believe, and not sure how to check that? kenneth@dv7:~$ ps -ef | grep byobu kenneth 16245 16173 0 05:18 pts/12 00:00:00 grep --color=auto byobu kenneth 25935 1 0 Dec14 ? 00:21:26 /usr/bin/xfce4-terminal -x byobu-launcher kenneth 25938 25935 0 Dec14 pts/0 00:00:00 tmux -2 -f /usr/share/byobu/profiles/tmuxrc new-session /usr/bin/byobu-shell kenneth 25962 1 1 Dec14 ? 00:37:31 tmux -2 -f /usr/share/byobu/profiles/tmuxrc new-session /usr/bin/byobu-shell kenneth 25963 25962 0 Dec14 pts/1 00:00:00 sh -c /usr/bin/byobu-shell This is from the byoby man page and I absolutely don't know what it does? I tried, it, and looked around, can't tell. Ctrl-a ~ - Save the current window's scrollback buffer there's also enter, copy mode, select with space key, and press enter to copy, I do that, the screen displays gibberish for 10 seconds refreshes, done. cat >> ~/log.output << COMM --paste using ctrl a ] I think-- COMM this confirms the copy paste works, but when I press enter, nothing get saved to that log file, I've checked, I do have write privileges in my home directory. lol the select all, from the xfce4-terminal doesn't go far enough, and scrolling back with the mouse, well won't work, no need to try it, I know byobu buffer doesn't work like that.

• ADF Bounded Taskflow Activation

- by Vijay Mohan
hey guys, It's really been a while since I last blogged. Just came across a hard-to-debug scenario, so thought of sharing it for the benefit of ADF developers.I had a page fragment(jsff) wrapped inside a bounded taskflow, for which the activation was conditional and was based on a requestScope property (be it a requestScope variable or a property coming from a requestScope bean). As soon as the taskflow activates and page renders the requestScope parameters life span ends. After that, when you raise an event inside the page (click of commandLink, moseHover, valueChange event etc) then for the first time the event gets fired but it fails to affect the change in the page, moreover, for the subsequent times the event itself doesn't get fired. Any guesses as to what could be the culprit..?I guess, I already gave the reason in the initial paragraph. For the first time when the event gets fired, the fwk sees that the page is already lying in inactivate state, so it fails to affect the change and for subsequent times it doesn't even fire the event because it already knew that the page/region is inactive. So, in such a scenario we must use either a pageFlowScope property or transientVO property which could exist till the page's life span.

• How to implement curved movement while tracking the appropriate angle?

- by Vexille
I'm currently coding a 2D top-down car game which will be turn-based. And since it's turn-based, the cars won't be controlled directly (i.e. with a simple velocity vector that adjusts its angle when the player wants to turn), but instead it's movement path has to be planned beforehand, and then the car needs to follow the path when the turn ends (think Steambirds). This question has some interesting information, but its focus is on homing-missile behaviour, which I kinda had figured out, but doesn't really apply to my case, I think, since I need to show a preview of the path when the player is planning his turn, then have the car follow that path. In that same question, there's an excellent answer by Andrew Russel which mentions Equations of Motion and Bézier's Curve. Some of his other suggestions of implementation are specific to XNA though, so they don't help much (I'm using Marmalade SDK). If I assume Bézier's Curve as the solution of choice, I'm left with one specific problem: I'll have the car's position (the first endpoint) and the target/final position (the last endpoint), but what should I use as the control point (assuming a square/quadratic curve)? And whether I use Bézier's Curve or another parametric equation, I'd still be left with another issue: the car can't just follow the curve, it must turn (i.e. adjust its angle) accordingly. So how can I figure out which way the car should be pointing to at any given point in the curve?
