  • Why do programming languages allow shadowing/hiding of variables and functions?

    - by Simon
Many of the most popular programming languges (such as C++, Java, Python etc.) have the concept of hiding / shadowing of variables or functions. When I've encountered hiding or shadowing they have been the cause of hard to find bugs and I've never seen a case where I found it necessary to use these features of the languages. To me it would seem better to disallow hiding and shadowing. Does anybody know of a good use of these concepts?

  • How do you demonstrate performance in paired-programming environments?

    - by NT3RP
Performance reviews have come up recently at my work, and I was put in an interesting position. Our team does a lot of pair programming, which has a tendency of averaging out the skill differences between team members (especially considering we rotate pairs). Generally, when doing performance reviews, you look back at the work you've done, and demonstrate what you've accomplished, and how you've exceeded expectations to try to negotiate a raise or other benefits. How do you demonstrate (or even measure) individual performance in an environment like this?

  • Data architecture for event log metrics?

    - by elliot42
My service has a large ongoing number of user events, and we would like to do things like "count occurrence of event type T since date D." We are trying to make two basic decisions: What to store? Storing every event vs. only storing aggregates (Event log style) log every event and count them later, vs. (Time-series style) store a single aggregated "count of event E for date D" for every day Where to store the data In a relational database (particularly MySQL) In a non-relational (NoSQL) database In flat log files (collected centrally over the network via syslog-ng) What is standard practice / where can I read more about comparing the different types of systems? Additional details: The total event stream is large, potentially hundreds of thousands of entries per day But our current need is only to count certain types of events within it We don't necessarily need real-time access to the raw data or aggregation results IMHO, "log all events to files, crawl them at a later time to filter and aggregate the stream" is a pretty standard UNIX Way, but my Rails-y compatriots seem to think that nothing is real unless it's in MySQL.

  • Start Programming embedded devices

    - by user1611753
I am good at C programming and also I am good at embedded devices. I have setup an embedded circuit myself using the basic arduino and by interfacing some devices with it. But the main problem is that I do not know where and how to start programming this device with the known C programming skills. The device has an on chip boot loader. By "start programming", I mean how to bring the embedded device into my programming and stuff. I know program starts from a main() and an infinite loop makes the application run. But the real question is, how to start this all and integrate the hardware with the software which I write. Kindly help with this. Thanks for the help in advance.

  • Does functional programming mandate new naming conventions?

    - by Jakob
I recently started studying functional programming using Haskell and came upon this article on the official Haskell wiki: How to read Haskell. The article claims that short variable names such as x, xs, and f are fitting for Haskell code, because of conciseness and abstraction. In essence, it claims that functional programming is such a distinct paradigm that the naming conventions from other paradigms don't apply. What are your thoughts on this?

  • Microsoft Workflow - "Event cannot be delivered"

    - by Wojtek
I have strange problem. My application is using Windows Workflow Foundation. It is simple app that creates requests and then other presons accepts/denies these requests. Everything was working very fine until my client took application to other servers (app and db). From this time WF instances are created in DB but when app tries to fire event to WF instance it strikes exception: "Event "EventName" for instance id "instanceGUID" cannot be delivered". What went wrong? Any suggestion where to start find the problem?

  • How to sketch out an event-driven system?

    - by Jordan
I'm trying to design a system in Node.js (an attempt at solving one of my earlier problems, using Node's concurrency) but I'm running into trouble figuring out how to draw a plan of how the thing should operate. I'm getting very tripped up thinking in terms of callbacks instead of returned values. The flow isn't linear, and it's really boggling my ability to draft it. How does one draw out an operational flow for an event-driven system? I need something I can look at and say "Ok, yes, that's how it will work. I'll start it over here, and it will give me back these results over here." Pictures would be very helpful for this one. Thanks. Edit: I'm looking for something more granular than UML, specifically, something that will help me transition from a blocking and object-oriented programming structure, where I'm comfortable, to a non-blocking and event driven structure, where I'm unfamiliar.

  • Retro video games programming

    - by SebKom
I just watched the Super Mario Bros. -1 World glitch in youtube and I really began wondering about the code behind those games. Which language was used? What about the OS for the video games consoles? Are there any website with resources about this subject? (I am a 90s video gamer so I am particularly interested about the programming behind those games but feel free to make this a wiki and include links to resources about video games programming in general, if you want)

  • PHP AJAX mysql event calendar - UI for events spanning multiple days

    - by play
I have built a PHP calendar system and have pretty much everything done but not sure how to deal with a UI issue involving how the events that stretched out over a couple of days. I want to be able to stretch an event that stretches over couple of days in a div that spans those days in the calendar. Basically I would like to know how to achieve what these guys have achieved with the event that stretches out from 21st to 22nd with the yellow div background. I have been trying to see how I can do it with PHP but I feel like I might be trying the wrong thing. Perhaps this is done with javascript?

  • Ext RowEditor.js does not fire 'afteredit' event

    - by terrani
Hi, I have a Ext grid with RowEditor plugin. I have the following code to add 'afteredit' event to the roweditor object. store.on('update',function(){ }); editor.on("afteredit",function(roweditor, changes, record, index){ $.ajax({ url: $("#web").val() + "/registration/client/address-save" ,type: 'post' ,data: record.json ,dataType: 'json' ,success: function(data){ if(data.success == true){ alert("Update Successfully"); } } }); }); when I click a row and edit a value, sometimes the grid fires 'afteredit' event, but sometimes it doesn't. Do I have a problem with my code above?

  • jQyery bind on ajax load() event

    - by Andrei C
Hi guys. I have a page which display multiple blocks with results details. Inside each block I have some tags with thichbox jQuery plugin attached( class="thichbox"). http://jquery.com/demo/thickbox/ here is an example of one kind of ampersant tag: <a class="thickbox" title="Please Sign In" href="userloginredir.php?height=220&width=350&deal=3"> Problem comes when I added a jQuery pagination to the page because of to many results displaying on the page. The div component with the results inside is updated through ajax load() event. Below is the pagination script. $(document).ready(function(){ //References var pages = $("#menu_deals li"); var loading = $("#loading_deals"); var content = $("#content_deals"); //show loading bar function showLoading(){ loading .css({visibility:"visible"}) .css({opacity:"1"}) .css({display:"block"}) ; } //hide loading bar function hideLoading(){ loading.fadeTo(1000, 0); }; //Manage click events pages.live('click',function(){ //show the loading bar showLoading(); //Highlight current page number pages.css({'background-color' : ''}); $(this).css({'background-color' : 'yellow'}); //Load content var pageNum = this.id; var targetUrl = "ajax_search_results.php?page=" + pageNum + "&" + $("#dealsForm").serialize() + " #content_d"; content.load(targetUrl, hideLoading); }); //default - 1st page $("#1").css({'background-color' : 'yellow'}); var targetUrl = "ajax_search_results.php?page=1&" + $("#dealsForm").serialize() + " #content_d"; showLoading(); content.load(targetUrl, hideLoading); }); When I added pagination(code above), the thickbox events are not recognized anymore and instead of poping out a window with the login form inside it opens the results in new page (is acting like clicking on a normal link) From my jQuery knowledge this means that the components are not defined in the DOM because the content is updated after document ready triggered. I'm trying to bind the load event with something like this: content.bind('load',???); But I don't know how to pass the load params, targetUrl and the callback function hideLoading, when binding the load event. Please help me out in this matter, already took me more time than possible allowed. Thank you!

  • Why does this C# event handler not respond to this event in this Silverlight application?

    - by Edward Tanguay
    Can anyone tell me why the following code successfully executes this event: OnLoadingComplete(this, null); but never executes this event handler? void initialDataLoader_OnLoadingComplete(object obj, DataLoaderArgs args) CODE: using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.Linq; using System.Windows.Controls; using System.Diagnostics; namespace TestEvent22928 { public partial class MainPage : UserControl { public MainPage() { InitializeComponent(); DataLoader initialDataLoader = new DataLoader("initial"); initialDataLoader.RegisterText("test1", "http://test:111/testdata/test1.txt"); initialDataLoader.RegisterText("test2", "http://test:111/testdata/test2.txt"); initialDataLoader.BeginLoading(); initialDataLoader.OnLoadingComplete += new DataLoader.LoadingComplete(initialDataLoader_OnLoadingComplete); } void initialDataLoader_OnLoadingComplete(object obj, DataLoaderArgs args) { Debug.WriteLine("loading complete"); //WHY DOES EXECUTION NEVER GET HERE? } } public class DataManager { public DataLoader CreateDataloader(string dataloaderIdCode) { DataLoader dataLoader = new DataLoader(dataloaderIdCode); return dataLoader; } } public class DataLoader { public string IdCode { get; set; } public List<DataItem> DataItems { get; set; } public delegate void LoadingComplete(object obj, DataLoaderArgs args); public event LoadingComplete OnLoadingComplete = delegate { }; private int dataItemCurrentlyLoadingIndex; public DataLoader(string idCode) { IdCode = idCode; DataItems = new List<DataItem>(); dataItemCurrentlyLoadingIndex = -1; } public void RegisterText(string idCode, string absoluteSourceUrl) { DataItem dataItem = new DataItem { IdCode = idCode, AbsoluteSourceUrl = absoluteSourceUrl, Kind = DataItemKind.Text }; DataItems.Add(dataItem); } public void BeginLoading() { LoadNext(); } private void LoadNext() { dataItemCurrentlyLoadingIndex++; if (dataItemCurrentlyLoadingIndex < DataItems.Count()) { DataItem dataItem = DataItems[dataItemCurrentlyLoadingIndex]; Debug.WriteLine("loading " + dataItem.IdCode + "..."); LoadNext(); } else { OnLoadingComplete(this, null); //EXECUTION GETS HERE } } } public class DataItem { public string IdCode { get; set; } public string AbsoluteSourceUrl { get; set; } public DataItemKind Kind { get; set; } public object DataObject { get; set; } } public enum DataItemKind { Text, Image } public class DataLoaderArgs : EventArgs { public string Message { get; set; } public DataItem DataItem { get; set; } public DataLoaderArgs(string message, DataItem dataItem) { Message = message; DataItem = dataItem; } } }

  • What happened to programming-books.com?

    - by Kurtosis
A couple years ago I found a great site called something like 'programming-books.com' (but not exactly that). It let users submit links to their favorite books for various programming languages, and write a short blurb about why they're so good. You could include their Amazon page and the website would grab a cover picture. I've since lost that bookmark and am trying to find it again, anyone know what site I'm talking about? Is it still around? (cross-posted @ hacker news)

  • How to use Event notification in Solaris 10 when a directory change

    - by user357594
I read the following page: Robert Benson's article on ECF developers.sun.com/solaris/articles/event_completion.html I also read the Solaris man pages but they are not very clear of how to use event notifications for directories. For example, If I add a new file into a directory, I would like to get some notification of that event. I found this link: blogs.sun.com/praks/entry/file_events_notification Which has what I need but it is for Solaris 11 ( which is not in the market yet). Based on the link below, I don't want to use poll because I want to get the performance advantage of events. blogs.sun.com/dap/entry/event_ports_and_performance Any suggestion is highly appreciated! -Armando.

  • Visual Studio 2008. MFC event wizard broken

    - by G Forty
OK, so it's almost a programming question - The VS2008 dialog event wizard has stopped working. Double-clicking on a button in an MFC dialog project does not fire the wizard as usual and a right-click to get to the 'Add Event Handler...' shows a dialog with no message types. Further to this the MFC message mapping and virtual class listing that generally appears in the properties window (Alt + Enter) is now empty. Has anyone elese seen this and if so, how'd they fix it? I have 'repaired' my VS08 installation ... Thx++ Jerry
