  I'm not familiar with server-side scripting, but I'm currently using a PHP application on Media Temple to cache JPEGs from four webcams hosted on a server located in the middle of the Indian Ocean. (Hence my reason for caching them in the US.) The webcams are updated every five minutes. The PHP application stores the cached images in http://static.rigic.co/cache/. I would like to create a cron script to automatically delete the contents of "cache" (not the folder itself; just the files inside) at a regular interval.

• Mac OSX snow leapord move to folder on keystroke

  On a weekly basis I have to organize thousands of photos (in groups of up to five thousand) into folders depending upon what they contain (to then narrow them down to the best photos of the same thing). This means I am constantly scanning through photos and organizing them into a folder. THe problem is, the process of stopping my scan, then dragging the photo all the way into a folder myself is bogging me down. Would it be possible to, for instance using something like applescript, or even going so far as using XCode/Cocoa, to create a shortcut that moves whatever I have selected in the finder to a pre-specified folder? Does somethign like this already exist?

  Many of us stare at computer screens all day. Lately, my eyes have been irritated from prolonged staring at my computer screens. Does anyone use or know of any eye wear technology that helps with this? About five years back, I bought a pair of non-prescription eye glasses that had a no-glare layer put on them by an optometrist. It slightly helped, so I'm considering getting another pair. Is this the best option I have at this point? Thanks so much in advance for your wisdom!

• Is is possible to hide label colors in list view in Mac OS 10.X Finder? I use labels as star ratings

  I have modified the first five label names in OS X Lion to be ? through ?????. This way I can easily tag photos etc. in the finder. However, I find that Apple's rendering of the colored bars is horrendously ugly. I'd like to keep the labels (to be able to sort by label) but not see the colors. I know it was possible to change the colors with Label X, but Unsanity has not issued an update for Lion. I don't need to change the colors, just find a way to hide them in the finder.

• My MacBook Pro (2011) is dead

  I connected my Sony digital camera with the MacBook and the screen turned black. I wonder why because the Sony camera was not on at the time and technically could not be accessed. So I thought it might be temporary and I turned on my camera. Well, it did not work, but my MacBook Pro has been dead since then. It will not turn on - when I hold the power button for five seconds, nothing happens. When I connect the charger cable, the green light is very dim and blinks a little (with about 20% illumination). I wonder what the problem is. I have to call Apple Care, but just so that I know, what could be wrong? Is my MacBook permanently dead? It might be under warranty but I am not sure.

• Server suddenly running out of entropy

  Since a reboot yesterday, one of our virtual servers (Debian Lenny, virtualized with Xen) is constantly running out of entropy, leading to timeouts etc. when trying to connect over SSH / TLS-enabled protocols. Is there any way to check which process(es) is(/are) eating up all the entropy? Edit: What I tried: Adding additional entropy sources: time_entropyd, rng-tools feeding urandom back into random, pseudorandom file accesses – netted about 1 MiB additional entropy per second, problems still persisted Checking for unusual activity via lsof, netstat and tcpdump – nothing. No noticeable load or anything Stopping daemons, restarting permanent sessions, rebooting the entire VM – no change in behaviour What in the end worked: Waiting. Since about yesterday noon, there are no connection problems anymore. Entropy is still somewhat low (128 Bytes peak), but TLS/SSH sessions have no noticeable delay anymore. I'm slowly switching our clients back to TLS (all five of them!), but I don't expect any change in behavior now.

• Mini-jack problem with Sony Vaio (running XP)

  I have a five year old Sony Vaio laptop (vgn-fw31m) that has had impact damage to the audio-output mini-jack for about the last year or so. In a recent discussion with my brother, we wondered whether it would be possible to write a program that would enable windows to use the microphone mini-jack input as the audio-output? As I currently use this laptop for work I am not keen to risk pulling it apart in order to replace the components comprising the audio-out. I therefore 'hope' that a programming solution exists. • Colors less saturated in Snow Leopard Finder, Preview & Safari than in Chrome -- why?

  If I look at the picture here in Safari, Preview or the finder, the shades of blue are significantly different than if I look at the picture in Google Chrome (they are less saturated than in Chrome). Since I am a photographer and need to prepare pictures for publication online, I need to know what a jpeg should really look like, in order to color-correct it. I have an excellent Eizo monitor that is correctly calibrated. If I open the same image in Photoshop CS3, I get the Chrome colors if I use Monitor RGB under view proof setup, and I get the Safari colors if I use Macintosh RGB. Can anyone explain the difference between these two settings, and the difference between Safari and Chrome? Which colors are correct? Photos that I prepared under Windows (during the past five years) now seem washed out in the Apple Finder and Preview, even though I had correctly prepared them. Is there a setting on the Macintosh for color calibration, besides the monitor calibration control panel?

• VMware ESX 3.5 Host Health shown as unknown

  I have an ESX 3.5 update 5 cluster of five host servers, all fully patched as of this Friday. Today I noticed that one of the servers has the Hardware Health status as unknown in Virtual Center Infrastructure Client. When I look at the Health Status view under configuration for that host, all the items are status Unknown. The server is exactly the same configuration as the others - same model (HP DL360 G5), memory, NICs etc. I have tried restarting the management service with service mgmt-vmware restart but this has not resolved the issue. Asides from this, I am not seeing any issues with the cluster - however, I hate having a blind spot like this. Any ideas?

• Web Filter For Multiple Networks

  I have been using a Barracuda web filter 310 in our network and I have just had enough of it. It does not support trunking and we have several networks that have users that need to be web filtered. (I guess if everyone just did their flippin jobs I would not have this issue) but the management wants me to get it resolved. Does anyone know the top five web filters that are better than the barracuda web filters that support network trunking so that I can have multiple domains and subnets going through it? • How much power supply do I need for my server, and could a shortage be causing my odd crashing?

  I have 5 servers, all with similar hardware (i7, four 2tb 7200rpm drives, two 4tb 5400rpm drives, 430 watt power supply), and lately the machines have been freezing up. This has gotten worse in the last day or so, and I can't pinpoint any explanation. One recent change was adding the two 4tb hard drives. The crashes happen most often while running a large Hadoop job, so I was originally thinking the load was causing some issues, but last night one server just froze without any heavy load on the box (or so I think), other than HDFS (Hadoop's distributed file system) was probably rebalancing itself since two of the five nodes were offline. If I plugin a monitor and keyboard to one of these frozen machines, I can't get any response or feedback on the screen. Any ideas on possible points of failure and/or different logs I can look at to investigate? • Cannot connect to internet with Clearwire modem.

  I'm currently using a Motorola WiMAX modem (CPEi 25725) and cannot connect to the internet. I can connect to the modem at 192.168.15.1 and check its status. It says that it has good/excellent connectivity to the internet and shows all five signal bars. Additionally it has sent and received some WiMAX packets so I believe it is connected to a tower. I'm at a loss for what the problem is. Unplugging the modem, restarting it from software, and restarting my computer (Windows 7) have not helped. Windows still reports that it is not connected to the internet. Alternatively, could this be an ISP issue? I have heard that Clearwire is a not-so-reputable ISP that blocks VoIP, and I was using Skype recently.

• Inaccurate bandwidth limiting in altq queues

  I'm setting up an environment where I have one Linux server, one OpenBSD router and one Linux client and I want to be able to limit how much bandwidth the client should be able to use. I've been performing these tests with "netcat" and "time" (using time to measure the time of the transfer with netcat), and what happens when trying these tests (using the TCP protocol, the queues will for some reason not work with UDP) is that the queues aren't exact at all. For example: when setting a bandwidth limit of 10mbit, the client cannot use more than five mbits, when setting a limit of 100mbit, the client cannot use more than around 50mbit. • How do I make my "volume up" more powerful in Win7?

  My volume up button raises the volume by 1%. Its also not a button, it's a weird 'touch' thing which is really really terrible. If I want to lower the volume, I have to awkwardly rub it for a while. If it were to decrease by 5% or 10% it would be a lot better. Can this be set somewhere in Windows/Keyboard settings? I got close to a solution with Autohotkey, where I could do this: a::Send {Volume_Up 5} which would send the volume up command five times, however when I assign it to the volume key, it forms an endless loop since the Send command sends Volume_Up and parses it at the same time. There's also a mention of it on winsupersite that says The cheapest, called MSDN Operating Systems, costs $699 a year ($499 renewal), and of course includes Windows 8 (Core), Windows 8 Pro, and Windows 8 Enterprise. You get five licenses each for Windows 8 Core and Pro, and one Multiple Activation Key (MAK) for Windows 8 Enterprise. What is windows 8 core? Is it the new 'home' edition or something else? What differentiates it from the pro and enterprise editions?

• Do I use the FV function in Excel correctly?

  My task: Create a table: Calculate what the revenues of e-trading will be after five years at 15 percent interest rate if we now have 15 000 EUR. Use the FV function from the Financial Group in Excel. My resolution: =FV( 15%; 5; 0; -15000). My question: Is it correct? I know the task lacks information whether the interest rate is per month or per year. I calculate it as 'per year'. My question is orientated more on the usage of the FV function. I, for example, do not understand why '-15000' and not '15000'. Also why the third parameter has to be 0? Maybe I do it wrong. Please help me solve it! Thanks in advance.

• What is the difference between Skip and Don't Copy buttons in Copy File dialog?

  This is a silly question. In Windows 7/Vista when a user trying to copy multiple file, it looks like he has five options: Copy and Replace Don't Copy Copy, but keep both files Skip Cancel the operation. It looks to me that option 2 (Don't Copy) is the same as 4 (Skip). However, it's kind of strange for Microsoft to put two buttons that perform the same action. I probably miss something. Could you please tell me what I'm missing?

• Why are my log in times taking so long in Linux?

  In recent weeks, login times on my Ubuntu server have started timing out; both through SSH and the local command line console. Examination of the /var/auth.log yields nothing interesting. How can I diagnose long log in times on my Ubuntu server? I should mention, also, that no updates have been performed since the problem has started, and that the /, /boot/ and /usr/ file systems are mounted as readonly. [Edit] This is a stand alone machine, so it doesn't authenticate with Active Directory, LDAP etc. Also, the login prompt is responsive, as is the password prompt. Upon typing the password then CR, I'll timeout. After four a five tries, I will be able to login, although I'm worried this will start taking longer.

• Is it possible to really delete a Facebook chat message or the whole chat?

  Ok, so a few months ago me and a friend send a whole bunch of smileys to each other in Facebook chat just for fun. I wish I had known at that time how stupid that was. Even until today, every time I open the chat with that contact, the Facebook tab totally locks up when I try to load that chat. It will load eventually after five minutes or so, but it becomes very inconvenient at times. On Facebook Messenger for Android, there's no problem and the chat works fine. I'd like to know if there's any way to completely delete a Facebook chat (not archive them) and start over so it won't load the smileys anymore.

  Currently I have a 2mb/s ADSL connection. I signed up for the service more than five years ago. Has technology improved much during that time to allow for greater speed using the same wires? The building I live in is quite old and the lines aren't very good. They weren't able to support 6mb/s service back then. Now I notice that the lowest speed offered by my telco is 10mb/s. The safest way to secure internal web servers is to only connect using VPNs but this seems overkill to protect a DVRs remote web interface (for example). As a compromise, would it be better to use very large ports numbers? (eg. five digits up to 65531) I've read that port scanners typically only scan the first 10,000 ports so using very high port numbers is a bit more secure. Is this true? Are there better ways to protect web servers? (ie. web guis for applications)
