  • performing simple buffer overflow on Mac os 10.6

    - by REALFREE
I'm trying to learn about stack base overflow and write a simple code to exploit stack. But somehow it doesn't work at all but showing only Abort trap on my machine (mac os leopard) I guess Mac os treats overflow differently, it won't allow me to overwrite memory through c code. for example, strcpy(buffer, input) // lets say char buffer[6] but input is 7 bytes on Linux machine, this code successfully overwrite next stack, but prevented on mac os (Abort trap) Anyone know how to perform a simple stack-base overflow on mac machine?

  • 64-bit 13.10 shows 1GB less RAM than 64-bit 13.04 did

    - by kiloseven
Multiple 64-bit versions (Kubuntu, Lubuntu and Xubuntu) once installed on my ThinkPad R60 show 3GB of RAM, not the correct 4GB of RAM. Last week with 13.04, I had 4GB of RAM (which matches the BIOS) and this week I have 3GB available. Inquiring minds want to know. • How to use more than 3 virtual disks in Linux using CentOS and XenServer

    - by 010110110101
I've attached 5 virtual disks to a Virtual Machine in Citrix XenServer. The VM has the xs-tools installed. Initially it said that it couldn't add so many disks. After I installed the xs-tools, it let me add all the disks. But /dev doesn't show all the disks. It shows these: /dev/xvda /dev/xvdb /dev/xvdc /dev/cdrom Perhaps it is bound by the limits of an IDE bus? (3 disks + CD-ROM) If so, how does one change the VM to use SCSI? Edit: According to the documentation: 2.6.3. VM Block Devices In the PV Linux case, block devices are passed through as PV devices. XenServer does not attempt to emulate SCSI or IDE, but instead provides a more suitable interface in the virtual environment in the form of xvd* devices. It is also possible to get an sd* device using the same mechanism, where the PV driver inside the VM takes over the SCSI device namespace. This is not desirable so it is best to use xvd* where possible for PV guests (this is the default for Debian and RHEL). For Windows or other fully virtualized guests, XenServer emulates an IDE bus in the form of an hd* device. When using Windows, installing the Citrix Tools for Virtual Machines installs a special PV driver that works in a similar way to Linux, except in the fully virtualized environment. Still, with 5 virtual disks attached, I don't see the other xvd devices. • How to understand Linux kernel source code for a beginner?

    - by Amit Chavan
Hi, I am a student interested in working on Memory Management, particularly the page replacement component of the linux kernel. What are the different guides that can help me to begin understanding the kernel source? I have tried to read the book Understanding the Linux Virutal Memory Manager by Mel Gorman and Understanding the Linux Kernel by Cesati and Bovet, but they do not explain the flow of control through the code. They only end up explaining various data structures used and the work various functions perform. This makes the code more confusing. My project deals with tweaking the page replacement algorithm in a mainstream kernel and analyse its performance for a set of workloads. Is there a flavor of the linux kernel that would be easier to understand(if not the linux-2.6.xx kernel)?

  • Is there much difference between X86 Assembly language on Windows and Linux?

    - by Logan545
I'm a complete beginner at Assembly, and my aim is to learn as much as I can to do with Assembly to one day I can reach expert level (I know I'm way off right now, but you never know). My only problem is this: I've got two books which both teach assembly, one on a Linux and the other on Windows. They are Jeff Duntemann's Assembly Language Step By Step (the linux one) and Introduction to 80x86 Assembly Language and Computer Architecture (the windows version). If I want to get the best out of assembly, should I do this on linux and windows? Also, is the syntax the same on Windows and Linux or will I have teach my self again when learning on the other OS( which is my main concern, I want to be able to use assembly on windows and linux).

  • GRE keepalive with Linux and RouterOS

    - by eri
I have a Linux host and couple of routerboadrs. I created a GRE tunnel, but Linux does not answer keepalive packages. Then router mark gre connection as unreachable, so I cant send to Linux host from router subnet. If linux sends something into tunnel (ping, etc.) - RouterOS mark connection as reacheble. Second and next packages routed nicely until one minute idle (no traffic). Tunnel in linux a make in this way: remote=x.x.x.x dev=gre21 network=10.21.0.0/16 ip tunnel add ${dev} mode gre remote ${remote} ttl 255 ip addr add 172.16.1.1/24 peer 172.16.1.21 dev ${dev} ip link set ${dev} up ip route add ${network} dev ${dev} And ip l: 14: gre21: <POINTOPOINT,NOARP,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 1476 qdisc noqueue state UNKNOWN link/gre 0.0.0.0 peer 109.60.170.15 How to set state "running"? How to keep alive tunnel? Ping in cron?

  • Put a Windows computer to sleep remotely (from a Linux box)

    - by snark
I'd like to have my Linux box (a QNAP TS-210 NAS) send the order to go to sleep (or hibernation) to my main Windows 7 computer. As the NAS is running Linux, I can't use psshutdown from SysInternals' PsTools. Is there any Linux equivalent? Or some "magic packet" that can order the Win7 computer to sleep. I know I could install a SSH daemon and trigger a shutdown command from the Linux box using ssh, but ideally I do not want to install anything on the Win7 computer. I can install Linux software on the NAS, no problem about this. PHP, python and perl are also available on it.

  • Publishing and setting permissions to a Linux share to AD

    - by blsub6
I have a Linux share that I want to publish to users on my Active Directory domain. I'd like to be able to control the permissions to access that share using security groups. So say I have a share named "Share" on my Linux machine named "Linux" with IP address 192.168.1.2. I publish \\192.168.1.2\Share in AD and make it so that only people who are part of the "IT" security group can access it. What's to stop anyone who's not in the "IT" security group from just going to explorer and typing in \\192.168.1.2\Share or \\Linux\Share into their Explorer to access this share? Do I need to set up permissions on the Linux file server?

  • How to make schema dumps comparable between Windows and Linux

    - by Jonathan
I have two systems running, one on linux and the other on windows. From the linux box, I ran pg_dump against both systems and dumped the schema. pg_dump command: pg_dump -h HOST -U USER -s -f /tmp/out.sql DB_NAME After I removed all of the "--" comments, I diffed the files together. Diff output snippet, linux compared to windows: - ADD CONSTRAINT sys_c004775 FOREIGN KEY (ruleid) REFERENCES rule(ruleid); + ADD CONSTRAINT sys_c004775 FOREIGN KEY (ruleid) REFERENCES "rule"(ruleid); The linux dump does not quote any entities and windows does. Is this a function of some encoding or just of a difference between windows and linux? Is there an option in pg_dump to make the output more consistent?

  • Minimal Linux distribution with sshd and apt

    - by Sergey Mikhanov
When I signed up for my Debian Linux VPS hosting and first logged on and invoked ps, there was the only user process running: sshd. As I can see, this was minimal Linux with only two things installed and configured: sshd and apt (plus all dependencies, of course). I want to build (or use existing) similar Linux distro, any advice on how to build (or pick) one? Googling "minimum linux", or "linux with sshd only" usually brings up Debian's netinstall, which is not what I want. Thanks in advance.

Hello all. I've been a linux user for quite some time. But haven't do printing until now. I just wanna ask how to do printing in linux? I have researched a bit on it. I found some $> echo "print me" > /dev/lp0, but unfortunately, I have no lp0 in my /dev. I don't know if this is the right thing to do. Nevertheless, please tell me of ways on how I can print from my linux box. Here are some details: OS: debian linux 5.0.4 printer: disclosed until it is necessary connection: usb connection So do i need to add a printer first? From the printer manual that I read, this printer model has no linux driver.

  • SSD runs faster on Windows as compared to Linux [closed]

    - by wushugene
Windows 7 seems to install, boot and run much smoother & faster than each the three linux distros I have recently tried (Ubuntu 12.04 unity, Linux mint 13 MATE, and Fedora 17 on gnome 3.4). Why am I facing bad performance in Linux? I have tweaked my Linux installs for the SSD (enabling trim, disabling swap, etc.) I'm using an Acer TravelMate with i5-2410m processor, intel hd 3000 graphics, 8 gigs of ram, and a 256 gb samsung 830 ssd. Edit: Boot times are 10-15 seconds slower, there is noticeable delay from login to fully loaded desktop, and in general does not appear to be as responsive as my old windows 7 install or the Linux guests I had running on it.

I am using 64 bit Ubuntu 12.10. This is my kernel version: Linux 3.5.0-19-generic #30-Ubuntu SMP Tue Nov 13 17:48:01 UTC 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux My wireless card is an AWUSU36H The first thing I do to install the driver is copy the driver from the CD to the Downloads folder. cd /media/me/AWUS036H/Drivers/RTL8187L/Unix (Linux)/Linux driver for kernel 2.6.X$ cp rtl8187_linux_26.1025.0328.2007.tar.gz ~/Downloads/ Then I extract the tar tar xvfz rtl8187_linux_26.1025.0328.2007.tar.gz I navigate into the extracted folder, and I try to follow the instructions in the Readme.txt cd rtl8187_linux_26.1025.0328.2007 This are the contents of the folder: drv.tar.gz makedrv stack.tar.gz wlan0rmv ieee80211 ReadMe.txt wlan0dhcp wlan0up ifcfg-wlan0 rtl8187 wlan0down wpa_supplicant-0.4.9 This is what the Readme.txt says: Release Date: 2006-02-09, ver 1.2^M RTL8187 Linux driver version 1.2^M ^M --This driver supports RealTek RTL8187 Wireless LAN driver for ^M Fedora Core 2/3/4/5, Debian 3.1, Mandrake 10.2/Mandriva 2006, ^M SUSE 9.3/10.1/10.2, Gentoo 3.1, etc.^M - Support Client mode for either infrastructure or adhoc mode^M - Support WEP and WPAPSK connection^M ^M < Component >^M The driver is composed of several parts:^M 1. • Is there a SUPPORTED way to run .NET 4.0 applications natively on a Mac?

    - by Dan
What, if any, are the Microsoft supported options for running C#/.NET 4.0 code natively on the Mac? Yes, I know about Mono, but among other things, it lags Microsoft. And Silverlight only works in a web browser. A VMWare-type solution won't cut it either. Here's the subjective part (and might get this closed): is there any semi-authoritative answer to why Microsoft just doesn't support .NET on the Mac itself? It would seem like they could Silverlight and/or buy Mono and quickly be there. No need for native Visual Studio; cross-compiling and remote debugging is fine. The reason is that where I work there is a growing amount of Uncertainty about the future which is causing a lot more development to be done in C++ instead of C#; brand new projects are chosing to use C++. Nobody wants to tell management 18–24 months from now "sorry" should the Mac (or iPad) become a requirement. C++ is seen as the safer option, even if it (arguably) means a loss in productivity today.

What, if any, are the (Microsoft) supported options for running C#/.NET 4.0 code natively on the Mac?

  • ./rtnet start rteth0-mac: unknown interface: No such device ioctl: No such device

    - by Anisha Kaul
    I have installed the RTnet over Xenomai. RTnet compiled well, and I also tested loopback on the single machine and was able to ping. However I noticed ./rtnet start showing the following output: What should I interpret when all it says is "no such device"? What more info should I provide here for you to help me in getting rid of this error? linux-y3pi:/usr/local/rtnet/sbin # ./rtnet start rteth0: unknown interface: No such device rteth0-mac: unknown interface: No such device ioctl: No such device ioctl: No such device ioctl: No such device ioctl: No such device ioctl (add): No such device vnic0: unknown interface: No such device SIOCSIFADDR: No such device vnic0: unknown interface: No such device SIOCSIFNETMASK: No such device Waiting for all slaves...ioctl: No such device ioctl: No such device linux-y3pi:/usr/local/rtnet/sbin # lsmod: linux-y3pi:/usr/local/rtnet/sbin # lsmod Module Size Used by tdma 18281 0 rtmac 9274 1 tdma rtcfg 49485 0 rtcap 7216 0 rt_loopback 1563 2 rtpacket 5517 0 rtudp 10655 0 rt_8139too 11374 0 rtipv4 22842 2 rtcfg,rtudp rtnet 42130 9 tdma,rtmac,rtcfg,rtcap,rt_loopback,rtpacket,rtudp,rt_8139too,rtipv4 ip6t_LOG 8480 6 xt_tcpudp 3540 2 xt_pkttype 1176 3 ipt_LOG 8201 6 xt_limit 2159 12 snd_pcm_oss 44878 0 snd_mixer_oss 15151 1 snd_pcm_oss snd_seq 55731 0 s nd_seq_device 6698 1 snd_seq edd 8407 0 ip6t_REJECT 4306 3 nf_conntrack_ipv6 8186 4 nf_defrag_ipv6 10128 1 nf_conntrack_ipv6 ip6table_raw 1451 1 xt_NOTRACK 1112 4 ipt_REJECT 2397 3 xt_state 1314 8 iptable_raw 1478 1 iptable_filter 1706 1 ip6table_mangle 1756 0 nf_conntrack_netbios_ns 1678 0 nf_conntrack_ipv4 8957 4 nf_conntrack 80411 5 nf_conntrack_ipv6,xt_NOTRACK,xt_state,nf_conntrack_netbios_ns,nf_conntrack_ipv4 nf_defrag_ipv4 1561 1 nf_conntrack_ipv4 ip_tables 18872 2 iptable_raw,iptable_filter ip6table_filter 1679 1 ip6_tables 19066 4 ip6t_LOG,ip6table_raw,ip6table_mangle,ip6table_filter x_tables 24094 16 ip6t_LOG,xt_tcpudp,xt_pkttype,ipt_LOG,xt_limit,ip6t_REJECT,ip6table_raw,xt_NOTRACK,ipt_REJECT,xt_state,iptable_raw,iptable_filter,ip6table_mangle,ip_tables,ip6table_filter,ip6_tables fuse 69279 3 loop 17417 0 dm_mod 71671 0 snd_hda_codec_via 57768 1 snd_hda_intel 24871 2 snd_hda_codec 95006 2 snd_hda_codec_via,snd_hda_intel snd_hwdep 6540 1 snd_hda_codec snd_pcm 90716 3 snd_pcm_oss,snd_hda_intel,snd_hda_codec snd_timer 22050 2 snd_seq,snd_pcm snd 71410 14 snd_pcm_oss,snd_mixer_oss,snd_seq,snd_seq_device,snd_hda_codec_via,snd_hda_intel,snd_hda_codec,snd_hwdep,snd_pcm,snd_timer soundcore 7854 1 snd iTCO_wdt 11716 0 iTCO_vendor_support 2942 1 iTCO_wdt snd_page_alloc 8324 2 snd_hda_intel,snd_pcm sr_mod 13186 0 cdrom 37628 1 sr_mod i2c_i801 9677 0 pcspkr 1950 0 sg 28847 0 serio_raw 4534 0 ext4 361361 2 jbd2 82943 1 ext4 crc16 1699 1 ext4 i915 500199 2 drm_kms_helper 33537 1 i915 drm 211193 3 i915,drm_kms_helper sd_mod 33977 5 i2c_algo_bit 5625 1 i915 intel_agp 11529 1 i915 intel_gtt 16397 3 i915,intel_agp ata_generic 3787 0 ata_piix 22875 4 ahci 20097 0 libahci 22089 1 ahci libata 194812 4 ata_generic,ata_piix,ahci,libahci scsi_mod 204709 4 sr_mod,sg,sd_mod,libata linux-y3pi:/usr/local/rtnet/sbin #

  • Announcing Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel Release 3 for Oracle Linux

    - by Lenz Grimmer
We are excited to announce the general availability of the Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel Release 3 for Oracle Linux 6. The Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel Release 3 (UEK R3) is Oracle's third major supported release of its heavily tested and optimized Linux kernel for Oracle Linux 6 on the x86_64 architecture. UEK R3 is based on mainline Linux version 3.8.13. Some notable highlights of this release include: Inclusion of DTrace for Linux into the kernel (no longer a separate kernel image). DTrace for Linux now supports probes for user-space statically defined tracing (USDT) in programs that have been modified to include embedded static probe points Production support for Linux containers (LXC) which were previously released as a technology preview Btrfs file system improvements (subvolume-aware quota groups, cross-subvolume reflinks, btrfs send/receive to transfer file system snapshots or incremental differences, file hole punching, hot-replacing of failed disk devices, device statistics) Improved support for Control Groups (cgroups)  The ext4 file system can now store the content of a small file inside the inode (inline_data) TCP fast open (TFO) can speed up the opening of successive TCP connections between two endpoints FUSE file system performance improvements on NUMA systems Support for the Intel Ivy Bridge (IVB) processor family Integration of the OpenFabrics Enterprise Distribution (OFED) 2.0 stack, supporting a wide range of Infinband protocols including updates to Oracle's Reliable Datagram Sockets (RDS) Numerous driver updates in close coordination with our hardware partners UEK R3 uses the same versioning model as the mainline Linux kernel version. Unlike in UEK R2 (which identifies itself as version "2.6.39", even though it is based on mainline Linux 3.0.x), "uname" returns the actual version number (3.8.13). For further details on the new features, changes and any known issues, please consult the Release Notes. The Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel Release 3 and related packages can be installed using the yum package management tool on Oracle Linux 6 Update 4 or newer, both from the Unbreakable Linux Network (ULN) and our public yum server. Please follow the installation instructions in the Release Notes for a detailed description of the steps involved. The kernel source tree will also available via the git source code revision control system from https://oss.oracle.com/git/?p=linux-uek3-3.8.git If you would like to discuss your experiences with Oracle Linux and UEK R3, we look forward to your feedback on our public Oracle Linux Forum.

  • Mac OS X Development.

    - by j-t-s
Hi All, I would love to begin developing applications for the MAC OS X, although I have to idea where to start. Problem: I currently do not, and cannot afford a new MAC OS X-based computer. Solution: A very good friend loves trying out things that I've made for Windows, and also owns a MAC OS X computer, and is willing to test these new creations. Now I am faced with another problem. I don't know which language to use to develop these apps in. I am a .NET Developer and seeing as though I can only use a Windows based PC to develop MAC apps, where should I start? I've heard of Mono, and have used it on Linux before, would Mono be an option for MAC development on a Windows based computer, too? Are there any other ways around this? Any help is appreciated. :) Thank you jt
