• OS X SnowLeopard menubar icons appear/disappear in 8 second cycle

  I just bought a new Mac Mini, and used Migration Assistant to move a user from an iMac to it. All went well, except a very strange behavior... the default OS X menubar icons like time, spotlight, etc (but NOT user installed app icons like dropbox or xmarks) appear and disappear in a very regular 8 second cycle. They appear for about 2 seconds, and then disappear for about 6. This is a screenshot with the icons, and this is a screenshot without them. This is very annoying and I have not found anything online with similar symptoms. Any ideas?

• Splitting an archive on multiple media

  I'm generating archives which are larger than my current physical media ( DVD ). I'd like to split those archives: automatically - instead of generating mini-archives by hand; consistently - so that an archive can be extracted independently of another. For instance for a tree of 24GB which would be archived into 10GB I would get 3 archives, all of them < 4.7 GB and each of them being able to be extracted without the other 2. I'm using dirvish so I'm archiving a filesystem tree. Update: I'm using Linux.

• Image resolution not showing up in "Get info" dialog in Mac OS X

  When I bought a Mac Mini with Mac OS X, I could show image dimensions in the Get Info dialog. After that, I installed some mobile application development software and later I noticed, Get Info was not showing the image dimensions anymore. I need to check the dimensions of those images to include artwork in my project. Now, I reinstalled my Mac OS X and it's working fine – it is showing the dimensions: Before that, 516x314 was missing. Why did that happen? How can I prevent it from happening again?

• Building intranet search

  At work, we have lots of information squirreled away in many different sites -- wikis, product docs, ticketing system, etc -- many of which require authentication. I'm very interested in having a single way to search all our various silos, and in my spare time have looked at Nutch, Grub, Django + Haystack, etc. None of these is a complete solution a la Google Mini or Google Search Appliance. Has anybody built a basic intranet search engine out of a mixture of these tools? Would you have recommendations about how to go about it? I like Django, and Haystack seems to be a mildly popular search solution for it, but I'd need to wire up a crawler that can support crawling authenticated sites to it.

• Redirect traffic to local address so iOS speedtest app measures LAN speed

  I have mounted a Speedtest Mini server on a local LAMP, so I can test my LAN speeds effortlessly just by opening the URL with a Flash enabled web browser, the thing is, I want my iOS and Android devices to test with the LAN server too, not with the WAN, as I'm trying to measure LAN-Only performance. Is there a way so I can redirect the traffic intended to an specific external IP (The one of the real server) to my local server?. I know the servers IP as a short Wireshark analysis gave me the data, but still searching for a way to make that redirect. I have Jailbreak and root on my devices, so playing with system files is not a problem. I've tried mounting a proxy and making redirects by the hosts file and domain names, but it looks like Ookla's app relies on IP address only.

• Hidden Periodic Screenshots on a corporate workstation?

  Can anyone recommend something that allows us to take hidden periodic screenshots of a workstation? We have a user who we believe is abusing his computer privileges. We have our suspicions that he may be playing games, etc. We need to monitor his screen without him being aware of it. Currently, the IT Department here is using Dameware Mini Remote Control to view his login sessions. But there isn't an option to set up automatic periodic screenshots. I'm hoping to find a tool that has this option and can be centrally managed as well. Thank you for your time. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• How do I trap the mouse pointer within a VirtualBox Guest OS?

  I'm on a Mac Mini 2011 with VirtualBox installed. I have Windows 7 running as a Guest OS. My question: How do I "trap" my mouse pointer within Windows? In other words, I don't want my mouse to move outside to the Host OS. Ideally, I would be able to press the Host key to "untrap" my mouse. The purpose: I'm playing Warcraft 3 in the Guest OS and I can't scroll the screen since the mouse keeps jumping to the Host OS instead of scrolling the screen. This happens even in full-screen mode.

• Upgraded to a GTX 580 - no video signal on boot

  I have: New Corsair 550w PSU (should be more than enough) AsRock H61M u3s3 mobo (with latest updated BIOS) Just replaced my faithful HD 7790 GPU with a refurbished EVGA GTX 580 1.5GB. When I boot, it sounds like the PC boots to windows, and the 580's fan is spinning, but I can't get any video signal from the card. Old card and integrated graphics still work fine (when I replace and use those instead). I am using the DVI ports on the card with a DVI-VGA adapter until I can get my hands on a mini HDMI adapter tomorrow. Anyone ever heard of a GPU needed something special to make the VGA signal work? Hold down a key on startup or something? I can't even find a manual for this card.

• How do I improve picture quality while streaming live football (soccer) from my Dell D600 to an HDTV?

  I have fibre broadband with speeds up to 38mbs, my Dell D600 has its max 2gb ram and has an ATI Mobility RADEON 9000 4xAGP 32mb card in it...Its TV support it says is NTSC or PAL in S-video and composite modes with a 7-pin mini-DIN connector (optional S-video to composite video adapter cable) and a vga port which i am using at the moment... The laptop runs Windows XP, an 80g HD with only windows + necessary updates and anti virus software on it..... There is HDMI on the TV, but not the laptop Fairly slow moving and close up pictures arent too bad, but when the movment is fast(a shot on goal) or in the distance, I cant see the ball and the images go out of focus.

  Would this be ok? I'm an ASP.NET developer and I'm planning to build "portable" web app servers based on Atom D510 mini-ITX. I have ran Ubuntu 10 with MySQL along with a separate IIS machines (win 2k3, 2k8) before with no problems. But now I'm thinking of "packaging" a web/db server into one small, cheap machine. I thought of Ubuntu/Mono/Postgres/ASP.NET, that it would be a good idea but I'm not sure? I have not actually tried it yet. Your thoughts?

  Is there any way to run higher than 1080p resolution from a Dell XPS 15/17 or HP Pavilion laptop? Specifically, I am planning to buy Dell XPS L721X or HP Pavilion dv7-7005tx with nvidia GeForce GT 650M and connect it to the Apple LED Cinema display via mini Displayport (I don't think Thunderbolt is supported on these notebooks). The idea is to get 1080p on the notebook and 2560x1440 on the main display. Only one of the montitors is active at any time. I asked Dell and they weren't of much help.

• How to disable screens turn off Windows 8.1

  So recently my computer started turning my screen monitors off after a while without activity, if I move the mouse or hit the keyboard they turn back on. I just want them to stay on. My System is windows 8.1 64 bit, I have 2 screens with mini display port and 1 television with hdmi which often is in regular television mode when this issue happens. • IIS7 application pool spawning worker processes

  IIS7 ASP.net 2.0 Number of worker processes growing out of control in single app pool. Appear to keep spawning upwards. Monitoring the w3wp.exe process i can see "current connections" to web service sometimes spawn out of control but not always , only worker processes are consistently growing when this issue occurs. Number of worker processes normally 0 - 20 , when spawning they can reach 1000 + This was deployed in: %windir%\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v2.0.50727\aspnet.config maxConcurrentRequestsPerCPU="50000" maxConcurrentThreadsPerCPU="0" requestQueueLimit="50000" But issue still occurs. Have tried running PROCDUMP on the exe process but the mini dump isnt a great help. I understand this is 99% probable an app issue , what i need help with is tracking it down. Thank you for any tips.   I've got a large amount of .MKV video files which seem to all play at a very low volume - I end up having to turn the TV up all the way to hear them, which is really irritating when I switch to another channel and wake the dead because it's so loud. What I'm looking for is a command-line method to increase the volume (so I can run it on all of them quickly) that would hopefully work regardless of the audio codec in use in the particular file. (I don't mind hard-coding the output audio though). For reference, I'm using Ubuntu 9.04 on my server, and the files are being played back with Boxee on a Mac Mini, but the volume problem is the same on Windows too.

• Vostro 1520 crash during bios update

  My Vostro 1520 (P8700 C2D) originally came with BIOS A02. This bios version have known problems with VT, so I had to upgrade to A05. During the upgrade, the notebook crashed. Needless to say, it won't boot anymore. The simple question is: is there a way to access the bios boot block to recover the bad flash with a crisis disk? I know that the MINI and the ALIENWARE models have this feature, but I can't seem to find anything about it in the Vostro machines. Any help will be much appreciated. PS: Dell's solution is to change the motherboard, but it will take several days, as the board isn't available in my country :( Regards, Deadmilkman

• Windows/global setting to allow only SSL when on public Wifi?

  Rather than going through each of my apps and modifying settings, or tweaking individual browser settings (I use three different browsers) or just being careful not to type non-SSL URLs into the web address bar, is there a solution at the Windows level that will prevent anything from connecting to the web from my laptop unless it's using SSL? I also have mini apps installed like Gmail checker, etc that connect to the web of their own volition using my usernames, passwords and such, so it goes beyond just web browsers. The reason I'm asking is I want to work securely on the general Internet when on public Wifi (e.g. coffee shops) without a lot of hassle or having to remember everything that needs to be locked down. When I'm back home I want to go back to full access mode using any kind of protocol on the web. If a website doesn't support SSL when I'm out in public then I just don't surf it - that's not a worry to me.

  Today decided to update from Win8 Pro to Win8.1. Everything was fine with enabled 3 monitors (Extended mode, not Eyefinity) at the same time. But after update can't enable 3d monitor, only 2 could be enabled at the same time. Did current things before write question here: Remove all drivers, reboots, re-installs Different cable input's and orders of enabling Tried to enable each monitor from Catalyst and Windows Screen Resolution Spec's: Windows 8.1 Pro XFX HD7970 3 of LG E2442 Cables: 2 DVI 1 HDMI Googled for many time and found one of possible solution is to buy ACTIVE mini DisplayPort to DVI/HDMI, but maybe there are some another more simple solutions?

• A GFX card with two DVI and one HDMI with audio?

  I haven't upgraded my PC for a while nor kept up to date with pc hardware since 2007, but have recently come up with a requirement and I am wondering if I can solve it! Are there any graphics cards out there that have two DVIs and one HDMI output, with the HDMI supporting sound over it? Basically, I've got a two PC monitor setup, and both monitors are connected to the two DVI's of my GTX9800+. I want to upgrade my card to say, GTX 460, but can't find if there is such with two DVIs (for my monitors) and one HDMI with audio (for my TV). So I am wondering, if such solution possible at all? I noticed that there are some cards out there with two DVI's and one mini-HDMI, but they all say 'HDMI Output Yes x 1 (via DVI to HDMI adaptor x 1 )', which probably means that because of the DVI element, the audio won't work. • Can one use Airport (Time Capsule) with an external DHCP server?

  I currently share my DSL connection using a wireless router with DHCP disabled, and dnsmasq running on a Mac Mini serving DHCP & DNS. This setup is important because I have clients doing PXE boot, and I need the control over DHCP that dnsmasq provides. There is also a Time Capsule on the network that's used purely as a backup device; its wireless functions are disabled. The wireless router is starting to get a little flaky, and since it doesn't support 802.11n I'd like to replace it. Rather than buying a new router, I'd like to just use the Time Capsule. But I see no way to disable its DHCP server; when I set the connection type to PPPoE, it insists on serving DHCP. Is there any way to use Airport PPPoE with a DHCP server elsewhere on the network?

• Windows 7 treating my third monitor as an extension to my second rather than detecting it as a stand alone

  I am trying to attach a third monitor to my PC, however I am coming across a rather strange issue. Windows screen resolution is still only showing that I have two monitors connected, but the second has been extended over both the second and third monitors. Basically, it shows as the main display being a normal size, and the secondary as being twice as long as normal. I have my main connected via a the display port, and the second and third are using two of the three mini HDMI ports my video card provides. How do I get windows to accept my third monitor the same as it does my second?
