• git branch naming best practices

  I've been using a local git repository interacting with my group's CVS repository for several months, now. I've made an almost neurotic number of branches, most of which have thankfully merged back into my trunk. But naming is starting to become an issue. If I have a task easily named with a simple label, but I accomplish it in three stages which each include their own branch and merge situation, then I can repeat the branch name each time, but that makes the history a little confusing. If I get more specific in the names, with a separate description for each stage, then the branch names start to get long and unwieldy. I did learn looking through old threads here that I could start naming branches with a / in the name, i.e., topic/task, or something like that. I may start doing that and seeing if it helps keep things better organized. What are some best practices for naming git branches? Edit: Nobody has actually suggested any naming conventions. I do delete branches when I'm done with them. I just happen to have several around due to management constantly adjusting my priorities. :) As an example of why I might need more than one branch on a task, suppose I need to commit the first discrete milestone in the task to the group's CVS repository. At that point, due to my imperfect interaction with CVS, I would perform that commit and then kill that branch. (I've seen too much weirdness interacting with CVS if I try to continue to use the same branch at that point.)

• Method for finding memory leak in large Java heap dumps

  I have to find a memory leak in a Java application. I have some experience with this but would like advice on a methodology/strategy for this. Any reference and advice is welcome. About our situation: Heap dumps are larger than 1 GB We have heap dumps from 5 occasions. We don't have any test case to provoke this. It only happens in the (massive) system test environment after at least a weeks usage. The system is built on a internally developed legacy framework with so many design flaws that they are impossible to count them all. Nobody understands the framework in depth. It has been transfered to one guy in India who barely keeps up with answering e-mails. We have done snapshot heap dumps over time and concluded that there is not a single component increasing over time. It is everything that grows slowly. The above points us in the direction that it is the frameworks homegrown ORM system that increases its usage without limits. (This system maps objects to files?! So not really a ORM) Question: What is the methodology that helped you succeed with hunting down leaks in a enterprise scale application?

• How do you word wrap a RichTextField for Blackberry

  I've been trying to modify a rich text field to display correctly in its half of the horizontal field. The goal is this: --------------------------- | address is | ***********| | very long | ** IMAGE **| | state, zip | ***********| --------------------------- Where address is a single string separate from the city and zip. I am modifying the address field like this: RichTextField addrField = new RichTextField(address) { public int getPreferredWidth() { return 200; } protected void layout(int maxWidth,int maxHeight) { super.layout(getPreferredWidth(),maxHeight); setExtent(getPreferredWidth(), getHeight()); } }; The results look like this: ----------------------------- | address is ve| ***********| | state, zip | ** IMAGE **| | | ***********| ----------------------------- where clearly the address is just going under the image. Both horizontal fields are static 200 pixels wide. It's not like the system wouldn't know where to wrap the address. However, I have heard it is not easy to do this and is not done automatically. I have had no success finding a direct answer online. I have found people saying you need to do it in a custom layout manager, some refer to the RichTextField API, which is of no use. But nobody actually mentions how to do it. I understand that I may need to read character by character and set where the line breaks should happen. What I don't know is how exactly to do any of this. You can't just count characters and assume each is worth 5 pixels, and you shouldn't have to. Surely there must be some way to achieve this in a way that makes sense. Any suggestions?

• ropemacs USAGE tutorial

  There are many sites with instructions on installing ropemacs, but so far I couldn't find any with instructions on how to use it after it's already installed. I have it installed, or at least it seems so, Emacs has "Rope" menu in it's top menu bar. Now what? So far I could use only "Show documentation" (C-c d by default). An attempt to use code assist (which is auto-complete, I presume?) only causes Emacs to ask about "Rope project root folder" (what's that?) in the minibuffer and then showing nothing. So, once ropemacs is installed, what are the steps to see it in action on some simple python scripts? Something like "if you have this script in your emacs and put the blinking square here and press this, it does that" would be an answer. (I've been thinking if I should ask this or not for some time, because nobody else seem to have the same problem, so I thought asking this question will make me look somewhat retarded. But, after all, it's usually better to ask it and and look like a retard than not to ask it and do like a retard...)

• How can I disable the CTRL-ALT-DEL key combination completely on XP/Vista/7?

  I have been googling extensively to figure this out, and nobody seems to be able to give a direct answer. Let me start by saying that I'm NOT talking about requiring CTRL-ALT-DEL to enter logon information. I'm working on a golf simulator program which is used at golf centers. I need the ability to completely disable the CTRL-ALT-DEL key sequence so that the golf center customers can't get out of the program and access the computer at all. I realize there are other key combinations that need to be handled as well, we already have this entire feature working in XP, but we're going to be switching to Windows 7 soon, and CTRL-ALT-DEL is the only one that doesn't seem to work in Win7. I'd really like an all-around solution if at all possible. This same program may also be installed on a client's personal computer for an in-home golf simulator, but the computers that really need this feature (golf center computers) are provided to the golf center by us, so would the best option be to write a new shell? I don't know anything about that at all, other than others that suggest writing a new shell for kiosk mode. I'd really like a simpler option, like modifying the registry in some way. I have heard that you can remove some buttons from the menu screen that pops up, but unless I can remove pretty much all of them (including the shutdown/restart button in the bottom-right corner), this won't be enough of a solution for me. • Where can I find clear examples of MVC?

  I've read a couple of things about MVCs but I still don't understand when they should be used and when they shouldn't be used. I am looking for clear examples that say things like "if you're developing this then you should use MVC, like this" and "if you're developing this, you shouldn't use MVC." Most of the examples I've seen rely on complex frameworks which have already implemented everything and you have to learn the framework and use it a lot to understand what's really happening. To many programmers, phrasings such as "UI business logic" sound like marketing terms — for example, the words "Instead the View binds directly to a Presentation Model" are used in this post. I am aware of the dangers that may lurk in the shadows as MVC is a concept and everyone feels like they know it best, yet nobody really knows exactly how to use it because there may be a lot of variables involved and everyone is allowed to have a different perspective on how to dissect a project into the Model, the View and the Controller. There is a lot of theory out there but very few clear examples. What I'm looking for are not "the best" ways of doing it so this should not be considered as subjective; I'm looking for different simple implementations that would allow me to decide on my own which are the best approaches. Succinctly: What are good on-line resources that present pro and con arguments to using MVC in various situations and provide clear examples to help the reader understand the concept?

• Simplest possible voting/synchronization algorithm

  What would be a simplest algorithm one or more people could use to decide who of them should perform some task? There is one task, which needs to be done only once, and one or more people. People can speak, that is, send messages one to another. Communication must be minimal, and all people use the exact same algorithm. One person saying "I'm doing it" is not good enough since two persons may say it at a same time. Simplest that comes to my mind is that each person says a number and waits a bit. If somebody responds in that time, the person with lower number "wins" and does the task. If nobody responds, person says that she's doing it and does it. When she says that she does it, everybody else backs off. This should be enough to avoid two persons doing the task in the same time (since there is wait/handhake period), but might need a "second round" if both persons say the same number. Is there something simpler? For those curious, I'm trying to synchronize several copies of SecondLife LSL script to do something only once.

• What are some funny loading statements to keep users amused?

  Nobody likes waiting but unfortunately in the Ajax application I'm working on at the moment, there is one fair-sized pause (1-2 seconds a go) that users have to undergo each and every time they want to load up a chunk of data. I've tried to make the load as interactive as possible. There's an animated GIF alongside a very plain, very dull "Loading..." message. So I thought it might be quite fun to come up with a batch of 50-or-so funny-looking messages and pick from them randomly so the user never knows what they're going to see. The time they would have spent growing impatient is fruitfully used. Here's what I've come up with so far, just to give you an idea. var randomLoadingMessage = function() { var lines = new Array( "Locating the required gigapixels to render...", "Spinning up the hamster...", "Shovelling coal into the server...", "Programming the flux capacitor" ); return lines[Math.round(Math.random()*(lines.length-1))]; } (Yes -- I know some of those are pretty lame -- That's why I'm here :) The funniest I see today will get the prestigious "Accepted Answer" award.   Hi , I am the newbie of android, but i hava seen the tutorial and implement some simple applications. The question i met is that I am tring to stream some video from my server to android, but the android VideoView class just plays the audition sololy without "image"@@!~ Here is my setting and android code : 1. android core code: mVideoView01.setVideoURI(Uri.parse("rtsp://192.168.16.1:8080/test.sdp")); mVideoView01.start(); 2. my streaming server is VLC and the command is: vlc -vvv d:\nobody.mp4 --sout=#transcode{vcodec=h264,width=320,hegiht=240}:rtp{dst=192.168.16.1,port=4444,sdp=rtsp://192.168.16.1:8080/test.sdp} ps: My ip is got from DHCP but I have checked it really can be connected(Android could play audition after all) ps2: I haved trid to stream some video from "http://www.americafree.tv/" and the playing is good!!@@ So I guess that the problem maybe is caused by streaming Video format, but I have almost tried every figument option form VLC, and it still don't workQQ. • asp.net does not Redirect when in frameset

  I have developed an application on asp.net. I uploaded it to my host. lets say http://myhost/app. My manager wrapped this address into an empty frameset on http://anotherhost/somename and sets the src of frame to http://myhost/ap. And so nobody can login. When the button is hit, it posts back (browser loads stuff, progress bar fills up and ends) but nothing happens. Does not redirect. (I have set IE to alwaysAllowCookies and it now does work, but other people still cannot) I think there is something that I have no clue about framesets and ASP.NET ps: I never use frames but could not convince my manager in doing so. • Synchronizing ASP.NET MVC action methods with ReaderWriterLockSlim

  Any obvious issues/problems/gotchas with synchronizing access (in an ASP.NET MVC blogging engine) to a shared object model (NHibernate, but it could be anything) at the Controller/Action level via ReaderWriterLockSlim? (Assume the object model is very large and expensive to build per-request, so we need to share it among requests.) Here's how a typical "Read Post" action would look. ReaderWriterLockSlim is optimized for multiple concurrent reads, and only blocks if the write lock is held. Since writes are so infrequent (1000s or 10,000s or 100,000s of reads for every 1 write), and since they're of such a short duration, the effect is that the model is synchronized , and almost nobody ever locks, and if they do, it's not for very long.

  As a result of changes in the company, we have to rearrange our sitting plan: one room with 10 desks in it. Some desks are more popular than others for number of reasons. One solution would be to draw a desk number from a hat. We think there is a better way to do it. We have 10 desks and 10 people. Lets give every person in this contest 50 hypothetical tokens to bid on the desks. There is no limit of how much you bid on one desk, you can put all 50, which would be saying "I want to sit only here, period". You can also say "I do not care" by giving every desk 5 tokens. Important note: nobody knows what other people are doing. Everyone has to decide based only on his/her best interest (sounds familiar?) Since there are only 10 people, I think we can brute force it looking into all possible configurations, but I was wondering it there is a better algorithm for solving this kind of problems?

  i´ve been a delphi database programmer since D2. Now i´m facing some digital imaging and 3D challenges that make me to start study OpenGL, DirectX, Color Spaces and so on. I´m really trying but nobody seems to use Delphi for this kind of stuff, just the good-old-paycheck Database programming. ok, i know that we have some very smart guys behind some clever components, some of this open-source. Is there any PhotoShop, Blender, Maya, Office, Sonar, StarCraft, Call of Dutty written in Delphi? Do i have to learn C++ to have access to zillions of books about that kind of stuff? What is the fuzz/hype behind this: int *varName = &anhoterThing? Why pointers seems to be the holy graal to this apps? I´ve downloaded MSVC++ Express and start to learn some WPF and QT integration, and i think: "Man, Delphi does this kind of stuff, with less code, less headaches, since the wheels were invented" This lead my mind to the following... Do you ever tried to write a simple notepad program using just notepad and dcc32 in Pascal/Delphi? if so embarcadero could make our beloved pascal compiler free, and sell just the ide, the vcl, the customer support ... and back to the question: Are we DELPHI, VCL or Pascal programmers?

• Delphi: Fast(er) widestring concatenation

  i have a function who's job is to convert an ADO Recordset into html: class function RecordsetToHtml(const rs: _Recordset): WideString; And the guts of the function involves a lot of wide string concatenation: while not rs.EOF do begin Result := Result+CRLF+ '<TR>'; for i := 0 to rs.Fields.Count-1 do Result := Result+'<TD>'+VarAsString(rs.Fields[i].Value)+'</TD>'; Result := Result+'</TR>'; rs.MoveNext; end; With a few thousand results, the function takes, what any user would feel, is too long to run. The Delphi Sampling Profiler shows that 99.3% of the time is spent in widestring concatenation (@WStrCatN and @WstrCat). Can anyone think of a way to improve widestring concatenation? i don't think Delphi 5 has any kind of string builder. And Format doesn't support Unicode. And to make sure nobody tries to weasel out: pretend you are implementing the interface: IRecordsetToHtml = interface(IUnknown) function RecordsetToHtml(const rs: _Recordset): WideString; end; Update One I thought of using an IXMLDOMDocument, to build up the HTML as xml. But then i realized that the final HTML would be xhtml and not html - a subtle, but important, difference. • ADO/SQL Server: What is the error code for "timeout expired"?

  i'm trying to trap a "timeout expired" error from ADO. When a timeout happens, ADO returns: Number: 0x80040E31 (DB_E_ABORTLIMITREACHED in oledberr.h) SQLState: HYT00 NativeError: 0 The NativeError of zero makes sense, since the timeout is not a function of the database engine (i.e. SQL Server), but of ADO's internal timeout mechanism. The Number (i.e. the COM hresult) looks useful, but the definition of DB_E_ABORTLIMITREACHED in oledberr.h says: Execution stopped because a resource limit was reached. No results were returned. This error could apply to things besides "timeout expired" (some potentially server-side), such as a governor that limits: CPU usage I/O reads/writes network bandwidth and stops a query. The final useful piece is SQLState, which is a database-independent error code system. Unfortunately the only reference for SQLState error codes i can find have no mention of HYT00. What to do? What do do? Note: i can't trust 0x80040E31 (DB_E_ABORTLIMITREACHED) to mean "timeout expired", anymore than i could trust 0x80004005 (E_UNSPECIFIED_ERROR) to mean "Transaction was deadlocked on lock resources with another process and has been chosen as the deadlock victim". My pseudo-question becomes: does anyone have documentation on what the SQLState "HYT000" means? And my real question still remains: How can i specifically trap an ADO timeout expired exception thrown by ADO? Gotta love the questions where the developer is trying to "do the right thing", but nobody knows how to do the right thing. Also gotta love how googling for DB_E_ABORTLIMITREACHED and this question is #9, with MSDN nowhere to be found. Update 3 From the OLEdb ICommand.Execute reference: DB_E_ABORTLIMITREACHED Execution has been aborted because a resource limit has been reached. For example, a query timed out. No results have been returned. "For example", meaning not an exhaustive list.

• ADO.NET zombie transaction bug? How to ensure that commands will not be executed on implicit transac

  e.g. When deadlock occurs, following SQL commands are successfully executed, even if they have assigned SQL transaction that is after rollback. It seems, it is caused by a new implicit transaction that is created on SQL Server. Someone could expect that ADO.NET would throw an exception that the commands are being executed on a zombie transaction. However, such exception is not thrown. (I think this is a bug in ASP.NET.) Moreover, because of zombie transaction the final Dispose() silently ignores the rollback. Any ideas, how can I ensure that nobody can execute commands on implicit transaction? Or, how to check that transaction is zombie? I found that Commit() and Rollback() check for zombie transaction, however I can call them for a test:) I also found that also reading IsolationLevel will do the check, but I am not sure whether simple calling transaction.IsolationLevel.ToString(); will not be removed by a future optimizer. Or do you know any other safe way invoke a getter (without using reflection or IL emitting)?

  I am sorry I have already asked this question on "Superuser", but nobody answers there, so I deleted it from "Superuser" and decided to post it here. Hope it's not a big crime, especially given the fact that I was firstly advised to use twill here on "StackOverflow" (not on "SuperUser") How do I start using twill? I have just downloaded it, unpacked it and clicked on the setup .py file in the folder. The black window (terminal) appeared for a moment and vanished. (I do have Python 2.5 installed on my computer - along with SDK from Google App Engine) In the twill documentation section it says: Downloading twill The latest release of twill is twill 0.9, released Thursday, December 27th, 2007; it is available for download at http://darcs.idyll.org/~t/projects/twill-0.9.tar.gz. You can also use Python's easy_install to install or upgrade twill. twill works with Python 2.3 or later. To start using twill, install it and then type twill-sh. • What's the compelling reason to upgrade to Visual Studio 2010 from VS2008?

  Are there new features in Visual Studio 2010 that are must-haves? If so, which ones? For me, the big draws for VS2008 as compared to VS2005 were LINQ, .NET Framework multitargeting, WCF (REST + Syndication), and general devenv.exe reliability. Granted, some of these features are framework things, and not tool things. For the purposes of this discussion, I'm willing to combine them into one bucket. What is the list of must-have features for VS2010 versus VS2008? Are there any? I am particularly interested in C#. Update: I know how to google, so I can get the official list from Microsoft. I guess what I really wanted was, the assessment from people using it, as to which things are really notable. Microsoft went on for 3 pages about 2008/3.5 features, and many people sort of boiled it down to LINQ, and a few other things. What is that short list for VS2010? Summary so far, what people think is cool or compelling: Visual Studio engine multi-monitor support new extensibility model based on WPF, prettier and more usable new TFS stuff, incl automated test tools parallel debugging .NET Framework parallel extensions for .NET C# 4.0 generic variance optional and named params easier interop with non-managed environments, like COM or Javascript VB 10.0 collection and array literals / initializers automatic properties anonymous methods / statement lambdas I read up on these at Zander's blog. He described these and other features. Nobody on this list said anything about: Visual Studio engine F# support Javascript code-completion JQuery is now included UML better Sharepoint capabilities C++ moves to msbuild project files

• Deleting a non-owned dynamic array through a pointer

  Hello all, I'm relatively novice when it comes to C++ as I was weened on Java for much of my undergraduate curriculum (tis a shame). Memory management has been a hassle, but I've purchased a number books on ansi C and C++. I've poked around the related questions, but couldn't find one that matched this particular criteria. Maybe it's so obvious nobody mentions it? This question has been bugging me, but I feel as if there's a conceptual point i'm not utilizing. Suppose: char original[56]; cstr[0] = 'a'; cstr[1] = 'b'; cstr[2] = 'c'; cstr[3] = 'd'; cstr[4] = 'e'; cstr[5] = '\0'; char *shaved = shavecstr(cstr); delete[] cstrn; where char* shavecstr(char* cstr) { size_t len = strlen(cstr); char* ncstr = new char[len]; strcpy(ncstr,cstr); return ncstr; } In that the whole point is to have 'original' be a buffer that fills with characters and routinely has its copy shaved and used elsewhere. To prevent leaks, I want to free up the memory held by 'shaved' to be used again after it passes through some arguments. There is probably a good reason for why this is restricted, but there should be some way to free the memory as by this configuration, there is no way to access the original owner (pointer) of the data.

• Creating a draft version of the page before publishing in Drupal 6?

  I've been looking for a good way to handle revisions in Drupal, but I am yet to succeed. For some reason there is no built in way to save a draft (that I've found so far), and the modules I've tried so far do not seem to fully work. First I tried save_as_draft, which seemed to do almost what I wanted, and if I'm not mistaken, also handles CCK fields. Sadly it seems to be broken somehow, so I can't edit a page once I've saved it as a draft.. maybe I could fix it by going through the code, but that would not be my preferred solution. The other module I tried is aptly named draft, but from what I can tell, this module only handles the title and body fields, and does this in a way that appear odd to me. Is there some common practice to solve this? I couldn't imagine that nobody had to solve this before, but I haven't found any good solution to it yet. Clarification I need this functionality for already existing content, that is, I want to be able to create and edit a draft version of an already published page, while the "old" version would still be available to anonymous users.

• Git as mercurial client? Why no git-hg?

  This is a question that's been bothering me for a while. I've done my homework and checked stackoverflow and found at least these two topics about my question: Git for Mercurial like git-svn and Git interoperability with a Mercurial repository I've done some serious googling to solve this issue, but so far with no luck. I've also read the Git Internals book, and the Mercurial Definitive Behind the Scenes to try to figure this out. I'm still a bit puzzled why I haven't been able to find any suitable git-hg type of a tool. From my perspective hg-svn is one of the main features, why I've chosen to use git over mercurial also at work. It allows me to use a workflow I like, and nobody else needs to bother, if they don't care. I just don't see the point in using the intermediate hg repo to convert back and forth, as suggested in one of the chains. So anyway, from what I've read hg and git seem very similar in conceptual design. There are differences under the hood, but none of those should prevent creating a git client for hg. As it seems to me, remote tracking branches and octopus merges make git even more powerful than hg is. So, the real question, is there any real reason why git-hg does not exist (or at least is very hard to find)? Is there some animosity from git users (and developers) towards their hg counterparts that has caused the lack of the git-hg tool? Do any of you have any plans to develop something like this, and go public with it? I could volunteer (although with very feeble C-skills) to participate to get this done. I just don't possess the full knowledge to start this up myself. Could this be the tool to end all DVCS wars for good?

• What's next for all of these Microsoft "overlapping" and "enhanced" products ?

  Recently I attended a road show, organised by MS Gold Partner company in the UK. The products discussed were: SharePoint server (2010 and 2007), Exchange server, Office Communication Server 2007, Exchange hosted services Office Live meeting, Office Communicator, System Center Configuration Manager and Operation Manager, VMware, Windows 7 etc. As Microsoft claims the enhancement in the each product against higher version, I felt that clients are not much interested in all these details. For example Office Communicator, surely they have improved a lot the product and first site all said 'WOW' great product, but nobody wish to pay money for all these extra features. Some argued, they are bogged down by all these increased number of menus. They don't need soft call feature included with mobile call. It apply for all other products as well such as MS office (next what 2 ribbons ?), windows OS and many more. Indeed there must be good features in all these products, but is it worth to spend money and time to update the older system ? Also sometimes these feature will decrease the productivity instead increase it. *So do you think what ever enhancement MS is doing in the products is only for selling purpose, not a real use ?? and I think also keep the developer busy learning the new tools and features. * I am sure some some people here will argue that some people need this sort of features. But I am not talking about NASA or MI5 guys. I am talking of usual businesses and joe public. Any ideas welcome.

  Hi every one, I am Ali from Saudi Arabia. undoubtedly, Scala is one of the best programming language for any programmer to learn, but there is "good" problems that is faced especially by beginners, and what seems frustrating that these problems won't solve soon, so as a beginner and on behalf of beginners let me raise these "objective" questions: 1- why scala has no effective and stable development platform, in fact, it suffers many problems with Eclipse, Netbeat, and Intellij. 2- although I have looked for a clear,easy, and understandable explanation of how to get started with Scala, but fortunately, there was no article or guide that deserves to spend the time I have spent to read it. nobody could tell you clear steps that fit you as a beginner who wants to start his"HELLO WORLD" with Scala, while all other languages have its "HELLO WORLD" guides and books. thank you for your time, be sure that you read notes below. 1- I have no experience in programming language before. 2- don't tell me "not to begin with scala", simply, because I will do. 3- OS is windows vista home premium. 4- I hate excuses, such as Scala is new language......etc

• Conventions for the behavior of double or triple "click to select text" features?

  Almost any mature program that involves text implements "double click to select the word" and, in some cases, "triple click to select additional stuff like an entire line" as a feature. I find these features useful but they are often inconsistent between programs. Example - some programs' double clicks do not select the ending space after a word, but most do. Some recognize the - character as the end of a word, others do not. SO likes to select the entire paragraph as I write this post when I triple click it, VS web developer 2005 has no triple click support, and ultra-edit 32 will select one line upon triple clicking. We could come up with innumerable inconsistencies about how double and triple click pattern matching is implemented across programs. I am concerned about how to implement this behavior in my program if nobody else has achieved a convention about how the pattern matching should work. My question is, does a convention (conventions? maybe an MS or Linux convention?) exist that dictates how these features are supposed to behave to the end user? What, if any, are they?
