• InstallShield or Windows installer corrupted

  Just recently I've been unable to install any software on my Windows 7 machine. Anything that uses InstallShield or the Windows installer will just hang or give a weird error. I noticed there will be many duplicate isbew64.exe processes (like 25) that launch and then just sit there or else a lot of msiexec.exe *32 processes, depending on what I'm trying to install. One piece of software specifically is the Logitech Harmony software. It gives me an *is_string_not_defined* error, saying c:\program files (x86)\:\ the filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect. The other thing I was trying to install was Battlefield: Bad Company 2, and that just hangs as well, and then just leaves all the Windows installer processes running in the background after I quit the install process. Very odd. I've checked well and googled these issues, it doesn't appear to be any sort of malware issue. I feel like it's related to some kind of corrupted installer application. I've rebooted, deleted the InstallShield folder in program files/common files as some places online suggested but to no avail. I have no idea what to do, any ideas?

• Connecting XRAID to Sunfire via LSI FC card - Drives not showing up

• Cannot start MySQL

  I used this command from shell to repair all Databases mysqlcheck -u root -p --auto-repair --check --optimize --all-databases and after that I restarted the server when it came back alive again I tried to open my vBulletin forum but I recived Database error message. and also tried to open phpMyAdmin but I received this error : #2002 - The server is not responding (or the local MySQL server's socket is not correctly configured). • How do I stop mail.app and its nag screen from opening upon login in OS X if I don't use it

  Currently whenever I start OS X (10.6.2), mail.app starts up with a "Welcome to Mail" dialog, asking me to create an account by inputting name, email address, and password. If I cancel this dialog, the app just hangs and I have to force quit it. I do not use the mail.app and I do not want it to start up with OS X. I have checked the login items and it is NOT present in the login items list for my account. I have also ctrl+clicked the doc icon that appears and confirmed there is no option enabled for "Run at Login". If I go ahead and just spam continue through the dialogs for a new account, I can get through to actually using Mail and accessing preferences. I cannot find a startup option in Mail preferences. After I have completed this, if I now restart, Mail does NOT open automatically. However as soon as I delete the account that I created, it once again goes back to popping up a "Welcome to Mail" dialog every time I startup and login. As best as I can tell, it seems OS X checks if an account exists in the Mail app, and if it does not, it will always start up a "Welcome to Mail" dialog on login, regardless if the Mail app is set to run via login items, etc. This is incredibly frustrating given I have no intention of using the Mail app. I realize I can easily leave account info in there (perhaps even disable the account via preferences), but this behavior is ridiculous. ajgs

  I setup a small box with Server 2003 64bit to be used as a webserver and email server for a small school. Real simple stuff for a few users. A simple website and a handful of emails. rDNS and spf records setup and pass every test I found including test at dnsstuff.com. Email sending to almost every email address (google, hotmail, aol, whatever) works. However, with one domain, I get an bounce back with the error. 550 Requested action not taken: mailbox unavailable It's another school running Exchange judging from some packet sniffing with WireShark. Every email on this domain I have tried sending to gives this error. The email address is valid as I can send to it from my personal, and gmail account without a problem. Does anyone know of some anti-spam software that gives an 550 error like the above? What else could this be? Thanks for any suggestions. • Mac OS Leopard: SyncServer process constantly using 100% CPU

  I am running Leopard that I upgraded from Tiger. I've been noticing that every once in a while the SyncServer process starts up and eats up all the CPU. The fans will start going at full blast and the laptop will slow down to a crawl. I need to force quit the process from Activity Monitor to get it under control. It disappears for a while, but eventually gets started again. I do have an iphone as well that I sync so I'm wondering if syncServer might be an apple process checking for my phone plugged in. The system is running RHEL 5.3 Beta. • Create a mailbox in qmail, then forward all incoming message to Gmail

  I needed to let PHP send mails from my webserver to my web app users. So I installed qmail on my Debian server: sudo apt-get install qmail I also updated files in /etc/qmail specifing my domain name, and then I run sudo qmailctl reload and sudo qmailctl restart: /etc/qmail/defaultdomain # Contains 'mydomain.com' /etc/qmail/defaulthost # Contains 'mydomain.com' /etc/qmail/me # Contains 'mail.mydomain.com' /etc/qmail/rcpthosts # Contains 'mydomain.com' /etc/qmail/locals # Contains 'mydomain.com' Emails are sent without any problem from my PHP script to any email address, using the standard mail PHP library. Now the problem is that if I send mail from my PHP using [email protected] as sender address, I want that customer can reply to that address! And possibly, I want all mails sent to this address should be forwarded to my personal Gmail address. At the moment qmail seems to not accept any incoming mail because of "invalid mailbox name". • How to read cell data in excel and output to command prompt

I have never done any type of scripting or coding before and I have been teaching myself online by learning from the technet script centre and online forums. • Does MySQL log successful or attempted queries?

  I'm trying to track down a hit-or-miss bug in a web application. Sometimes a request completes just fine; sometimes it hangs and never finishes. I see that Apache now has several requests listed on the server-status page as "sending reply," and that doesn't change. I'm testing on localhost, so there shouldn't ever be more than one. Out of curiosity, I set MySQL to log all queries and I'm tail -fing the log file. When things go OK, I see a pattern like this: 20 Connect root@localhost on dbname 20 Query (some query #1) 20 Query (some query #2) (etc) 20 Quit 21 Connect (etc) When it hangs, I see a pattern like this: 22 Connect root@localhost on dbname 22 Query (some query #1) //nothing happens, so I try the post again 23 Connect root@localhost on dbname 23 Query (some query #1) //nothing happens; try again 24 Connect (etc) Here's my question: is MySQL logging attempted queries, or successful queries? In other words, if the last line I see is query #1, does that imply that query #1 or query #2 is hanging? My guess is that the one I don't see is the problem, because the last one I see looks fine, but maybe the one I don't see is too screwed-up for MySQL to process. Thoughts?

• Sometimes, Synaptics Touchpad Tends Cursor to Top-Right Corner

  This has been a reoccurring issue for me, pretty much since I've owned this laptop (an ASUS G60JX.) Sometimes, the cursor will stop working properly and instead tend toward the top right of the screen. Basically, sometime into my usage (maybe after a couple hours) the touchpad will inevitably begin to malfunction, where it has confusing patterns of pushing the mouse cursor toward the top right of the screen. In addition, certain features (like momentum) seem to quit working entirely. It makes using the cursor extremely difficult. I've been having this issue across very many drivers. Pretty much as soon as multitouch came into the mix, although I don't believe multitouch has anything to do with it. It appears that, in the state of malfunction, it doesn't matter how you touch the touchpad, but where you touch it. Certain regions do not seem to trigger the cursor to move to the top right corner. In fact, no specific region seems to, but some areas do so more often than others. The issue can be resolved temporarily by putting the computer into sleep mode and awakening it. I have found no way to recreate this success without sleeping the computer or rebooting. Disabling and re-enabling the touchpad device does not do anything to resolve the problem. This issue does not affect my WACOM tablet nor any USB mice, and can be resolved (not to my satisfactory) by uninstalling the touchpad drivers. I'm looking for a solution, or at least a workaround that doesn't require sleep mode.

• Configure IIS Web Site for alternate Port and receive Access Permission error

  When I configure IIS to run a Web site on Port 1414, I get the following error: --------------------------- Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager --------------------------- The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80070020) However, as according to netstat the port is not in use. Completely aside from IIS, I wrote a test program (just to open the port and test it): TcpListener tcpListener; tcpListener = new TcpListener(IPAddress.Any, port); try { tcpListener.Start(); Console.WriteLine("Press \"q\" key to quit."); ConsoleKeyInfo key; do { key = Console.ReadKey(); } while (key.KeyChar != 'q'); } catch (Exception ex) { Console.WriteLine(ex.Message); } tcpListener.Stop(); The result was an exception and the following ex.Message: An attempt was made to access a socket in a way forbidden by its access permissions The port was available but its "access permissions" are not allowing me access. This remains after several restarts. The port is not reserved or in use as far as I know and while IIS says it is in use, netstat and my test program say it is not and my test program receives the error that I am not allowed to access the port. The test program ran elevated. The IIS Site is running MQSeries, but the MQ listener also cannot start on port 1414 because of this issue. A quick search of my registry found nothing interesting for port 1414. What are socket access permissions and how can I correct mine to allow access?

• How can I cause Task Scheduler to "fail" if a dialog box returns a certain result?

  I'm working on a VBScript to do a weekly reboot of all machines on our network. I want to run this script via Task Scheduler. The script runs at 3:00 AM, but there is a small chance that users may still be on the network at that time, and I need to give them the option to terminate the reboot. If they do so, I would like the reboot to occur the next night at 3:00 AM. I've set Task Scheduler up to repeat in this way. So far, so good. The problem is that if the user selects "Cancel" in my script, the Task Scheduler does not see my task as failed, and won't run it again the next night. Any ideas? Can I pass an errorcode to task scheduler or otherwise abort the task via VBScript? • Dell PS/2 Keyboard Stops Working Randomly After Power Disturbance

  I have a Dell PS/2 keyboard connected to a desktop PC running Slackware 12.2 & Windows XP. After a recent, brief power outage/disturbance at my home, the keyboard has begun to quit working at random times. It has stopped at POST, but not by keyboard error -- I have to press the F1 key to continue booting, and at times the keyboard has already stopped working. Other times, the keyboard will work perfectly for a long time (a day or more) before it finally quits. It has stopped at boot, in Windows XP, and in Slackware. The led lights continue to work regardless. I have tried another PS/2 keyboard and it seems to be immune to this problem. The USB mouse always works. Does anyone have any ideas about how this might have happened? If this is related to the power disturbance that killed the power to the running PC, is it feasible that it would have only fried the keyboard itself (which still works sometimes) and not the PS/2 port nor anything else? I have experienced no other problems since the event.

• Can I still restore partition table?

  Once I was going to resize partitions on my Mac HD from Bootcamp. I changed my mind and was going to quit, but apparently I hit a button, which made every single mac partion dissapear, and windows 7 refused to restart and be reinstalled. The 1 TB large HD consists of 3 partions, I believe. Since I can't see their actual size (except bootcamp), this is how I recall it. Macintosh HD about 500GB (Somewhere around 700GB according to disk utillity, but 500 according to Finder, and 500GB was all I could access.) Lion Recovery disk Bootcamp 293.36 GB To fix this I connected my mac via target disk mode to a pc and ran TestDisk. However this is the results: Since I Don't have 10 reputation I cant post the image showing the testdisk results, so I post a link instead hoping it is ok. The two mac partitions' sizes are completely wrong, and BOOTCAMP isn't showing. I tested using disk utilities from the snow leopard dvd. There there is one 293.36 GB Mac OS Extended partition. Before I had the firewire cable for target disk mode I tried reinstalling windows. Without success I tried again formating BOOTCAMP. Was that a bad thing to do? Could it have overwritten data from Macintosh HD? Unfortunately I have no backup. I could bring it to some kind of computer repair firm though.

• Reconfiguring PHP with OpenSSL Extension on CentOS

  Hi Guys - Long time browser, first time poster! I have a CentOS Dedicated server running just fine. I'm trying to reconfigure PHP to include the OpenSSL extensions so I can use some of the Youtube API's. I installed OpenSSL with yum, so it's in place on the server. I'm just now having trouble getting PHP to use it as an extension. I got the latest PHP tarball, untarred, set my configure string (./configure) using the proper parameter for openssl (--with-openssl=/usr) and it checked out just fine. I ran Make, then Make Install. I am getting hung up here. After it makes the PEAR config file it seems to quit. I guess I'm not sure, but it seems like there is a LOT more that should be happening. • Sendmail stat=Sent

  Guys, I am trying to figure out why sendmail is saying that it sends out an email but I actually never get it. This is from the logs when the email is being sent out: I have replaced the email address with some fake address and I have also replaced the name of the server with a fake hostname. The most significant point of this information from the logs is that it shows that the "Message was accepted for delivery". Do you guys have any suggestions as to why it seems like the message goes out but I never get the actual email? • Google Contacts/Calendars + Address Book + iCal: built-in sync (problems) or Exchange sync?

  (I've looked at a few other questions related to this, but I've only found old questions with people saying that they're having problems, or anticipating Snow Leopard fixing them; no recent updates.) I'm looking to sync my Google Contacts & Calendars, and Gmail, with my Mac & iPhone. The iPhone I have currently set up thus: IMAP for Mail Exchange (Google Sync) for Contacts & Calendars The Mac: Address Book: built-in sync iCal: CalDAV, configured as a Google account I haven't been syncing Gmail to Apple Mail, because I was having weird IMAP glitches every so often that just got to annoying. Will Exchange / Google Sync work for this at all? Any suggestions there? Here are the other problems I'm having. Address Book only syncs certain fields (for example, Birthdays don't sync at all). I believe this is a list of the information that's synced. Address Book's "Synchronize with Google" checkbox doesn't stay checked when I quit Address Book. I think iCal is working fine, for the most part. Any suggestions on how to improve this setup? Why doesn't Address Book / Google Contacts sync stay enabled? Could I use Exchange for it like I am on the iPhone? Will that sync all the fields, including Birthdays, etc.? Thanks in advance!

• memory tuning with rails/unicorn running on ubuntu

  I am running unicorn on Ubuntu 11, Rails 3.0, and Ruby 1.8.7. It is an 8 core ec2 box, and I am running 15 workers. CPU never seems to get pinned, and I seem to be handling requests pretty nicely. My question concerns memory usage, and what concerns I should have with what I am seeing. (if any) Here is the scenario: Under constant load (about 15 reqs/sec coming in from nginx), over the course of an hour, each server in the 3 server cluster loses about 100MB / hour. This is a linear slope for about 6 hours, then it appears to level out, but still maybe appear to lose about 10MB/hour. If I drop my page caches using the linux command echo 1 /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches, the available free memory shoots back up to what it was when I started the unicorns, and the memory loss pattern begins again over the hours. • How to get rid of Windows XP Pro Blue pop up screen

  Windows XP user-home edition 36 bit. One day I woke to see a blue pop up screen from Microsoft Windows XP Pro. I have not installed anything new myself. The 'add on' pop up always comes on when I open up mozilla to surf the net. I always just close it out to not install anything. I then woke to have colored tabs, the new download status bar at the bottom and this pop up window that asks me to retype two words spaced, a timer of two minutes starts and states if no word put in system will shut off. I have let it run down more than a few times and it does not shut down. No other options to choose from. If I misspell with a lot of letters it tells me I did so, but if I can't read a few letters I guess at it although it is not and it lets me resume what I am doing. This window pops up every single minute no matter what I am doing. Please help, I'm really annoyed with this. I have searched the net all over and don't quit know what to look for anymore

• Having munin server monitoring problem: Graphs not being generated.

I've followed the directions for debugging munin on the 'Debugging Munin plugins' wiki page, but I get the following results when going through their directions: After telnetting to localhost 4949, I can see a list of plugins, see a node at archstl.archstl.org, but can't fetch anything. The output is as follows: >fetch cpu . However, on the same machine (which is both the node and the master munin server), I can run munin-run cpu, and it prints the results correctly to the command line, like so: user.value 100829130 nice.value 3479880 system.value 13969362 idle.value 664312639 iowait.value 12180168 irq.value 14242 softirq.value 199526 steal.value 0 Looking at the wiki page mentioned above, it looks like it might be a plugin environment problem, but I can't figure out how to fix/change this... • Mac OS X Terminal.app Ubuntu 9.10 SSHD and incorrect keyboard mapping

  Does anyone have any Idea how to handle this? I can't stand connecting to certain Ubuntu boxes via Mac OS X because of issues with keyboard layout etc. I have set TERM=vt100 and TERM=xterm-color in Ubuntu .bashrc and also in the Terminal.app advanced preferences and nothing seems to fix this issue. Trying to use arrow keys on slim silver keyboard results in ^[[A etc. From Answer OS X 10.6.4 When I try to run /lib/terminfo/x/xterm-color I get permission denied? Maybe this is the issue?! Regular bash login shell. If I sudo often it works. Which leads me to believe the above permissions problem is the cause.
