  • Increase performance of Samsung 830 256GB SSD

    I have a Samsung 830 SSD in my notebook connected to a SATA interface. This is a rather old HP notebook nc8430 which means SATA is SATA I and not II or even III that disk supports. But SATA I still supports speeds up to 150MB/s so I expected at least double values as per image below. CrystalDiskMark shows rather slow performance: I've been using this SSD for over a year now and I would like to know what to do to make it blazingly fast as other reports say it should be? Edit As suggested I'm adding AS SSD screenshot of the test. And Samsung Magician's benchmark which is likely biased...

  • Cannot use scp on Mac OS X

    Hi all, when I try to copy any file with scp on Mac OS X Snow Leopard from another machine I get this error: scp [email protected]:/home/me/file.zip . Password: ... ---> Couldn't open /dev/null: Permission denied this is the output of "ls -l /dev/null": crw-rw-rw- 1 root wheel 3, 2 May 14 14:10 /dev/null I am in the group wheel, and even if I do "sudo scp..." it doesn't work. It's driving me crazy, do you have any suggestion? Thanx!

  • Using Remote Desktop, connect to a Windows 7 domain user account without first logging on locally?

    I have a dell laptop (henceforth we'll call this the server) running Windows 7 Enterprise. The server is part of my company's domain. My primary user account is a domain account. When I am at home and not connected to the domain, I prefer to connect to the server using Remote Desktop Connection from my MacBook Pro (we'll call this the client). The problem is, that if I do not physically login to the server, I am unable to connect to it using RDC from the client. I have a local administrator account on the server, and connecting to it via RDC works just fine. I had a feeling that the Mac RDC application was not giving me the full story, so I attempted the same procedure from a Windows 7 client. When trying to login, I get this message: So basically, If I logon to the server physically with my domain user and lock the computer, I can then successfully logon from the client. Otherwise, I am unable to connect.

  • Prevent users from Router 2 seeing Router 1 computers

    I've got 2 Netgear N300 (WNR2000v3) routers. Here's my setup: Modem Router 1 Private Users/Router 2 Public Wireless Users on "Guest" Network. I want to prevent users who are connected to Router 2's "Guest" network from accessing anything that is connected to Router 1. There is an option when setting up the "Guest" network called "Allow guest to access My Local Network" which I thought if unchecked would do this very thing; however, I can still access files and such of computers connected to Router 1. Router 1 assigns 192.0.0.x IP addresses, Router 2 assigns 10.0.0.x IP addresses, how can they even see each other? Do I need to change the subnet or something else?

  • Is it possible to tunnel ICMP over TCP?

    I don't want to tunnel TCP over ICMP (as ptunnel does), I want to go the other way around. I'm in the situation where I have TCP (HTTP) connectivity to a machine but an internal firewall over which I have no control is swallowing pings. The monitoring software I'm using appears to determine connectivity by attempting to send a ping before it tries to just connect to the web service on the target machine. It's failing this ping test and giving up. I believe if I could fool my monitoring software into thinking pings were getting through, it would then connect to the web service and be on its merry way. Anyone know how I can do this? I have SSH and root access on the destination machine.

    I’m trying to find a device that would allow a windows 7 client to wirelessly connect and display their screen to a projector while still connected to the wireless network. The idea is to allow a professor to still project and display content while walking around the room with their tablet. To date, haven’t been able to find a solution that meets the requirements, has anyone stumbled across one yet? Then I want the second one to display a value based on the date I entered in the first field. Is there support for this kind of scenario in Office Word 2007?   • Calendar invites go out OK, acknowldegements don't come back, using exchange server

    When I send an invite it goew out OK, however, I don't get an acceptances acknowledgement back. Both I and the person who got the invite are on exchange. When the person who got the invite sends an email responce there is a .ics mini-attachment. When I click on the .ics attachment it doesn't put anything in the calander, it just points to the contact for the person I sent the inviter to.

  • TV video constantly skips 1/2 second, plays 1 second; green on bottom

    I just got DirecTV. It worked for a day, but now the TV video constantly skips 1/2 second, then plays 1 second. Also, the bottom 5th of the screen is solid green. The audio does not skip. I tried to do "Set up TV signal" (in Media Center) - but I get an error. See the post I just made here titled "Error - “IR Hardware not detected” - but it’s installed/working." Thanks for your help.

  • Laptop shuts down randomly without warning

    My Asus Zenbook UX32V turns off randomly when I'm working on it. This happens both when the computer is recently turned on (5 minutes), and after being on for several days. I'm not running any heavy software The laptop is not heating The fan is not working on the maximum capacity (it's not heating) It happens when the laptop is lying still on the table It is no warning, it simply goes black It happens both when charging and on battery My guess is that it suddenly lose power somehow. What puzzles me is that I can flip the laptop upside down, sideways, shake it, etc. without it shutting off. This makes me think it's not something that's loose causing occasional short-circuits. I realize that the laptop probably doesn't like flipping and shaking, but it was the best way I could troubleshoot. I rarely turn the computer off, only have it in hibernate or sleep mode (most often hibernate). I've never experienced that the laptop is off when I wake it up from sleep mode. I've had the problem for a few months and it happens 2-8 times a week. Specs: Asus Zenbook UX32V Windows 8.1 (it happened in Windows 8.0 too) Intel i5-3317U CPU @ 1.70GHz The laptop is approx 1.5 years, but it has a small dent on one of the sides that probably voids the warranty. The dent has been there since week one and I don't think it's related to the problems I'm having now. Does anyone have a clue what might cause this, and how it might be fixed? I've read all other questions (some of which are listed below) that seem related to my issue, but none report the same behavior as I'm experiencing.   • Why does my screen dim on a desktop installation of Windows 7?

    Periodically, while using my Windows 7 Pro desktop installation, the screen suddenly dims. The brightness is about 75% normal (estimate). It's as if I am in a power-saving mode on a laptop running on batteries. But this is a full desktop installation. I know it is not a hardware glitch or monitor adjustment issue because the Windows cursor is still bright white while everything else goes dim. The Control Panel Power Options have not been changed. They are set to "Balanced [active]" and I have tried restoring the default settings. Flipping through the power and display settings, everything looks "normal." There is no screen saver or power-off-after settings apparent. Rebooting the system resets everything to full brightness but I can't find a way to restore it in Windows or to keep it from happening in the first place. Suggestions?

  • MacBook Air Keeps dropping Wi-Fi

    So my MacBook Air keeps dropping Wi-Fi for some reason. It happens ONLY on my home network, and ONLY to my computer. I'm using a Linksys WRT54G router. I'm the only Mac on the network. Every other Wi-Fi network is perfectly fine, and every other computer on this network is fine. Many things can happen. It could say it's connected, but not be able to access the internet (whether it tells me that there's no internet access or not). It may just drop Wi-Fi altogether, and refuse to connect. Generally, if I unplug the router and plug it back in, it's all good. It also works if I restart my computer. This happens multiple times a day. Yesterday I did everything I know to get it to connect (restart router many times, restart my MacBook), and nothing worked. Eventually it just magically worked. How can I stop this from happening? We got a notice from Comcast a while ago saying that a bot called DNS Changer was detected on one or more machines on the network. I'm assuming that this can't be me, right?

There's very little information available that gives detailed explanations of what cables are used inside a computer. What I found was very dated and often lacked detailed explanations. For someone planning out their first build it would be great way for this to be explained all in one place, like here! Important things to know about cables and connections in a computer? What are their names? Where do they connect to and why? What typical Voltages do they output? Changing Voltages for Overclocking? Please refernce PSU cables(Full modular, Modular and Non-Modular,24-pin, 20+4-pin etc), SATA(I, II, III), Molex etc. EDIT: Forgot to mention any information about PSU rails would also be appreciated :)

  • cannot access localhost using ip

    I have done a small web development project using eclipse. It runs well when I try running it on browser with url localhost:8080/myproject/home.html. But if I want to access it on another machine (laptop, mobile, etc. using the same wifi) it is not possible; it is not able to connect. After Googling for a while found out that I have to use the IP address instead of 'localhost'. So I tried 10.0.0.4:8080/myproject/home.html, but still does not work. In fact i am unable to open that url on the same machine (where localhost:8080/myproject/home.html works fine). I also added a new Inbound rule in control panel firewall settings, allowing access to all ports for protocol TCP. Still have problem in running application with the url 10.0.0.4:8080/myproject/home.html (both on same machine as well as laptop and mobile).   • How do I restore system default settings on Linux Mint KDE?

    I did something weird and now my text size is like 3pt on every system window, but when I go in and change my window fonts to larger to something that looks normal, it makes my clock, bash, and other fonts absolutely gigantic. Is there any way I can just roll back my system and it's settings? It wouldn't be much bother as I installed the OS yesterday. I'd hate to have to reinstall entirely though, but I guess it's an option.

    Where could I get best step by step instructions (with some simple explanations) how to setup domain controller on Windows Server 2008 R2 Server Core? I don't know what do I need? Do I need DNS as well and AD and so on and so forth. I don't know enough about these things, but I need to set them up to prepare development environment. I would also like to know how to configure firewall on DC machine, to make it visible on other machines because I've setup DC somehow but I can't connect to it... This is my HW config: Linksys internet router with DHCP my dev machine is Windows 7 my DC machine is a VM in my dev machine my dev machine has a network adapter to linksys and a virtual adapter to DC DC machine has two network adapters: one to linksys (to be inetrnet connected) and one to host (my dev Win7 machine)

  • Computer freezes +/- 30 seconds, suspicion on SSD

    My computer freezes for about 30 seconds, this happens occasionally. When it happens I can still move the mouse, sometimes even alternate between tabs in google chrome. If I try to open windows explorer nothing happens. Also chrome rapports "waiting for cache". It also happens in starcraft II, during which the sounds loops. My system specs are: AMD Athlon X4 651 Asus Ati HD6670 ADATA SSD sp900 Asus f1a55 mainboard 4 GB crucial 1333 ram 500 watt atx ps I'm running Windows 7, fully updated. Any help is much appreciated. Update: I tried something before your reply that may have helped the problem. I don't know for sure if it has, it's too soon to tell. A bit of history first. I had problems installing win7 on my ssd from the start. In IDE mode it worked, but I had the same problems as above. AHCI was a total fail, with it on before install as well as turning it on after install (including tweaking register). I didn't bother installing the AMD chipset/AHCI as it was reported to have no TRIM function and thus make problems worse. Eventually I did install the AMD SMbus driver as the stability issues were driving me crazy. It worked, no more issues, until I installed some extra drivers and software. Audio/LAN/ASUS suite, I don’t see the relation, but somehow it screwed up my system again. As a last effort I posted here on this site. After which the thought occurred to me turn on AHCI again as by now I had all necessary drivers installed anyway. (plus all windows updates downloaded/installed in the meantime) I did and stability didn’t seem great the first few reboots, but eventually everything seemed to work great. I tried to play starcraft II – an almost guaranteed freeze before – and I had no problems. I’m basically crossing my fingers and hope the problem is gone for good. I still think it has something to do with my SSD. In my research into the problem I noticed a lot of these issues with sandforce 2281 firmware, the exact same firmware I have. People reported the same problem that I had, freezes. Additionally they reported that during a freeze the hdd light stayed on, I noticed after I read this that this happened with my computer as well. None of this is conclusive evidence that my SSD is really to fault, but it is suspicious. And why turning on AHCI would fix it I don’t know. Thank you Tom for taking a look, if the problem returns I will certainly do what you advised.

    Is it possible to mount remote file system (on Windows 2003 server) as local disk in Windows 7? I have Windows 2003 server with software RAID and some shares. On another computer with Windows 7 I have software which can access only data form local or USB disks. This solution doesn't work because program doesn't see files in folder: Mount Remote CIFS/SMB Share as a Folder not a Drive Letter Everything is the same LAN.

  • windows 2000 freezing during large disk write

    We have a windows 2000 sp4 server which freezes up for about 1 minutes while its web-app does a ~500mb write operation. I can see the webapp start to do I/O activity (through process explorer) then the RDP session becomes unresponsive, you can click on windows and buttons but nothing happens. When the disk write finally finishes the session 'catches up' on all the mouse clicks you did during the freeze in a mad flurry of window activity and the server returns to normal. During the freeze the web-app stops as well. The same behaviour happens on the console of the server. (so I know its not a network thing) Nothing appears in the Event logs. Its like nothing happened. I have upgraded all the HP hardware drivers to the latest proliant support pack. And also run a HP hardware diagnostics which found nothing wrong. What would cause a disk write to lock the rest of the OS?
