• JSR 355 Final Release, and moves JCP to version 2.9

  JSR 355, JCP EC Merge, passed the JCP EC Final Approval Ballot on 13 August 2012, with 14 Yes votes, 1 abstain (1 member did not vote) on the SE/EE EC, and 12 yes votes (2 members were not eligible to vote) on the ME EC.  JSR 355 posted a Final Release this week, moving the JCP program version to JCP 2.9.  The transition to a merged EC will happen after the 2012 EC Elections, as defined in the Appendix B of the JCP (pasted below), and the EC will operate under the new EC Standing Rules. In the previous version (2.8) of this Process Document there were two separate Executive Committees, one for Java ME and one for Java SE and Java EE combined. The single Executive Committee described in this version of the Process Document will be implemented through the following process: The 2012 annual elections will be held as defined in JCP 2.8, but candidates will be informed that if they are elected their term will be for only a single year, since all candidates must stand for re-election in 2013. Immediately after the 2012 election the two ECs will be merged. Oracle and IBM's second seats will be eliminated, resulting in a single EC with 30 members. All subsequent JSR ballots (even for in-progress JSRs) will then be voted on by the merged EC. For the 2013 annual elections three Ratified and two Elected Seats will be eliminated, thereby reducing the EC to 25 members. All 25 seats will be up for re-election in 2013. Members elected in 2013 will be ranked to determine whether their initial term will be one or two years. The 50% of Ratified and 50% of Elected members who receive the most votes will serve an initial two-year term, while all others will serve an initial one year term. All members elected in 2014 and subsequently will serve a two-year term. For clarity, note that the provisions specified in this version of the Process Document regarding a merged EC will apply to subsequent ballots on all existing JSRs, whether or not the Spec Leads of those JSRs chose to adopt this version of the Process Document in its entirety. <end of Appendix> Also of note:  the materials and minutes from the July EC meeting and the June EC Meeting are now available--following the July EC Meeting, Samsung and SK Telecom lost their EC seats. • Nvidia driver overscan issue second monitor via dvi-d cable

  Ok, I know that I have a bit of a bizarre setup, but here goes. I have an old laptop, HP Pavilion 6000. The graphics card in there is a GeForce 7150M. The monitor connection is an old 18pin. The external monitor I use is a Samsung SyncMaster 2333. Don't ask me why, but this monitor only has a dvi-d connection (yes, i have searched it). So I have the monitor plugged into the laptop. If I use any of the Nvidia propriety drivers and try to set the resolution up to 1920x1080 (the monitor's native resolution), I get a massive overscan issue. Over the years I have tried to get this to work, tinkering with my xorg.conf to death. I have also tried this on every Ubuntu since 10.04, on all the corresponding LUbuntus, and on all the Linux Mints since Lisa. Exact same issue. I have even tried it in WinDoze and it works perfectly there (although I did get the error once, but was unable to reproduce it). Using the Open Source drivers it works perfectly iff I switch off the laptop monitor (this makes no difference with the Nvidia drivers). I would have happily gone on using the Open Source drivers, except that since upgrading to LUbuntu 12.10, the Open Source drivers make my monitor completely hazy and have the same overscan issue until I (through the haze, only because I know where things are) go to the monitor settings, activate the laptop's monitor, then deactivate it, and suddenly it comes right. I have to do this every time. So I have to find a way to fix one of them, so I may as well tackle the propriety drivers, hence this overlong question. Amidst other things, I have tried the nvidia-settings, but because it is connected to an 18pin, it detects the monitor as a vga monitor and does not give me overscan correction options. I have tried custom modlines (although there are always more of those try), I have tried using xrandr, and I have tried all the FlatPanelOptions. What I have not tried is a Gentoo build, as I don't have time any more to do that installation, but up to about three years ago when I ran Gentoo exclusively I did not have this issue. Below is an link to an image with a red highlight around the portion of the screen visible to me, the numbers around it are the number of pixels which are cut off. • After startup, display reverts to one desktop duplicated on both screens

  I have a Samsung R530 laptop. I'm actually running Linux Mint, which is based on Ubuntu (which is why I thought it would be OK to post this here). I'm now getting exactly the same problem on Ubuntu 10.10. I've got it setup with a secondary LCD monitor, and I've changed the display settings so the laptop screen and monitor are at optimal resolution, with the desktop shared between them. After startup though (typically around 10-30 seconds) the display reverts to 1024 x 768 on both screens, and the display is duplicated (i.e. both screens show the same thing). I think this is something to do with my video card, as I had the same problem when I was running Arch Linux. Any ideas? • Windows 8 DLNA streaming of MKV files

  I have a Samsung TV that is capable of playing MKV files. The Windows DLNA Play To menu that appears when you right-click a media file does not support MKV files, but a simple trick has been to change the file extension from .mkv to .avi so the Play To context menu item would appear. At that point I could successfully stream from my computer to my TV. However, this does not appear to work in Windows 8. Doing the same thing in Windows 8 causes the Play To window to open but the file does not get played. Dragging and dropping the file in the Play To window causes it to be silently ignored. Using actual AVI, MP4, etc. files works, of course. It appears Windows 8 is now doing some kind of validation on the file that Windows 7 wasn't previously. The Play To window does not show any kind of obvious error message or warning and there is nothing in the Windows event log. So, is there a way in Windows 8 to stream MKV files to a DLNA device without converting it to another container format? I would rather not use extra third-party software, but I would consider it if it's purposefully designed for this simple case rather than a more robust "media library/server" solution.

• Audio Static/Interference regardless of audio interface?

  I currently am running a media center/server on a Lubuntu machine. The machine specs: Core 2 Duo Extreme EVGA SLI 680i MotherBoard 2 GB DDR2 Ram 3 Hard Drives no raid - WD Caviar Black, Green, and Samsung Spinpoint Galaxy GTX 220 1GB External USB Creative XI-FI Extreme Card 550W Power Supply This machine is hooked up through an optical cable to an ONKYO HTR340 Receiver through the XIFI card. Whenever I play any audio regardless if it is through XBMC, the default audio player, a flash video, etc, I get a horrible static sound that randomly gets louder. Here is a video of the sound: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SqKQkxYRVA4 This static comes in randomly, sometimes going away for short periods, but eventually always comes back. So far I have tried everything I could think of: Reinstalling OS Installing/upgrading/repairing PulseAudio/Alsa Installing alternate OSes, straight Ubuntu, Lubuntu, Xubuntu, Arch, Mint, Windows 7 Switching audio from the external card to internal Optical, audio out through HDMI, audio out through headphones Different ports on receiver (my main desktop sounds fine on the same sound system) Different optical cables Unplugging everything unnecessary from the motherboard (1 HD, 1 Stick of Ram, 1 Keyboard) Swapping out ram Swapping out the motherboard Replacing the Graphics Card (was replaced due to fan being noisy, not specifically for this problem) Different harddrives Swapping power supply Disabling onboard audio Pretty much everything short of swapping the CPU. I haven't been able to narrow down the problem and it is getting frustrating. Is it possible that the CPU is faulty and might cause a problem such as this, or that the PC case is shorting out the motherboard? Any kind of suggestions will be appreciated.

• Intel Core i7 QuadCore on HP Pavilion dv7 Overheating Issues

  I bought a brand new HP notebook: HP Pavilion dv7-6b21em BeatsAudio edition. The notebook is about 2 months old and has pretty nasty overheating problem. I mainly use it for development however i do play some games. The disturbing thing is that the computer is loud on pretty simple tasks. Here are the specs: CPU: Intel Core i7-2670QM QuadCore ( 8 threads ) @ 2.20 GHz RAM: ( 8GB ) 2x 4GB @ 1066 HDD: 1TB 7200 GPU: ATI Radeon HD 6770M 1GB Dedicated DDR OS: Windows 7 64bit Enterprise I have an external monitor runing on VGA port an 22' Samsung SyncMaster S24B300 CPU Heat Statistics Platform: rPGA 988B (Socket G2) Frequency: cca. 3000 Mhz VID: 1.1809 - 1.2059 v Revision: D2 CPUID: 0x206A7 TDP: 45.0 Wats, Lithographu: 32 nm Heat: Tj. Max: 100*C, Power 4.5 - 5.9 Wats Core #0: 63*C Load on all is about 0 to 2% Core #1: 65*C Core #2: 66*C Core #3: 67*C I opened the notebook the fan is working fine there is no dust but still right now the fan is pretty loud even tho all i have open is FireFox. When i run a game the heat jumps to whopping 90-97*C. It has not shut down due to overheating yet but the loud fan is pretty annoying considering I'm not really doing anything stressfull. Is there anything i can do to fix this is it maybe a BIOS issue ? I have all drivers updated tho to the latest. I have very few background processes running consuming bare 2GB of RAM and about 2% of CPU. I had it serviced they said there is nothing wrong with it. But i feel that a Notebook that costs 1.2k Euros cant be like this.

• unreadable corrupted ntfs partition - lost clusters reported

  partition magic is reporting multiple 'bad file record signature' and 'lost clusters' errors on my 250GB samsung sata disk (connected via usb on a xp sp3). Unfortunately PM is unable to fix. PM shows the drive as being NTFS, detects used space ok and also drive name. But PM browser (right click on partition, browse...) won't show anything (as if disk was empty) Windows Explorer is not even picking the drive name and reports 'the file or directory is corrupted and unreadable' PTDD partition table doctor demo tells me the boot sector is fine, and I can see all disk content on its browser - but crucially cannot copy that content over to a new disk (PTDD browser is pretty arid to say the least) Also tried - photorec-6.11.3 - it actually started to extract files but wouldn't keep file names or any folder structure (maybe I missed sth on the configuration options) - find and mount - intellectual scan went well, the only partition on the disk was detected, then tried to mount into p: but got this error on windows explorer: 'p:\ is not accesible. The media is write protected'. Find and mount allows you to create an image from partition but I don't have a disk big enough at hand. Does anyone know if this will keep the extracted files/folders structure intact? I'm starting to think the disk is pretty screwed and my chances to recover this data are slim. Please someone enlighten me with that marvellous piece of software I am missing :-) Thanks in advance

• Windows 7 migration led to crashdump and hibernate problems

  Note: I'm using a Samsung 830 SSD (migrated OS from defunct PC) and other than these two (interrelated?) problems it's working fine. Surprisingly well actually. Motherboard is a ASUS P8Z77-V Deluxe. Problem 1: Crashdumps are not working. volmgr throws an event 45 "The system could not sucessfully load the crash dump driver." whenever you modify crashdump settings, or if a crashdump occurs. diskpart says that "Crashdump disk = no" which is peculiar. Problem 2: Hibernation isn't working. Again, volmgr throws the same event 45 if you try to hibernate. The screen blanks, then you're at the password prompt. No sleepage occurs. (Yes, I know I should avoid hibernation on SSDs but it's enabled and the hibernation file is definitely there so I'd like to know why it's failing). Diskpart claims "Hibernation file = no" which is again peculiar... it's plainly there and getting created by the system. The common factor appears to be volmgr and/or the crashdump "service" (if that's what it is). I'd much rather get this working than spend days reinstalling and reconfiguring the entire system, especially when it's working perfectly otherwise. Sleep works as well (as long as it's not hybrid sleep). So, what defines the flags "Crashdump disk" and "Hibernation file disk" in diskpart's output? And what might be going wrong that's breaking crashdumps in particular?

• Reorganize Primary/Recovery Partitions and then install Ubuntu Netbook Remix?

  Hi all, I have a Samsung N120 netbook (with upgraded 2GB RAM). I recently got a new hard drive and motherboard for it because the original parts were faulty. However, when I got it back, whoever was working on it decided to make my primary partition ~40GB in size, compared to (what appears to be) the recovery partition, which is around 100GB in size. Firstly, I want to make the recovery partition much smaller (around ~10GB or smaller, if possible) and then make my primary partition fill the rest of the space. After that, I want to install Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.10. I don't know if this is installed within Windows like Ubuntu 9.10 but I want both XP and UNR on my machine at the same time. So basically... how do I resize my primary and recovery partitions such that the recovery is about 10GB or less and the primary fills the rest? Secondly, is UNR installed within Windows? (If not, would it create its own partition on my hard drive, along with the XP partition, and the recovery partition?) Thanks in advance.

• hdparm - how to secure erase SATA SSD over USB

  I have been following this guide on how to secure erase an SSD (trying to improve the performance of mine, which currently only writes at about 30mb/s seq). However, I'm using an USB--Sata docking device to avoid having the harddrive frozen. Apparently using this solution the SATA device is recognized as a SCSI drive, which is giving me trouble. I use the "hdparm -I /dev/sda" command with those parameters, and I get the error; HDIO_DRIVE_CMD (identify) failed: Invalid Exchange After a lot of googling on the issue I can't seem to find anyone who has actually solved this problem. However, I have not tried to just go ahead and use the secure erase. So I'm not sure if this would actually still work. I would love any and all input I can get on this, especially on whether it will still work to do a secure erase with the drive being recognized as a SCSI drive. The drive itself is a Samsung 256gb SSD (pm800), I'm sure you can understand my reluctance to go through this procedure without feeling reasonably safe that I won't mess it up beyond repair.

• Fedora 9 not reconizing hard drive

  I am installing Fedora 9 to a PC (specifications at the bottom) and have had a lot of trouble with it recognising the hard drive. To get the Fedora installer to recognize it in the first place I had to pass "ata_generic.all_generic_ide=1 pci=nomsi" to the kernel, after which it installed OK. However, now when I boot the installed OS, I get a "could not find filesystem '/dev/root'" error. I tried passing the same arguments to the kernel at boot as I did when installing but to no avail. I have tried using the default LVM layout and defining manual ones but it made no difference. There is no option in the BIOS to enable AHCI or anything like that, in fact the BIOS is very limited in most respects. I can get into the system by using the installation CD in rescue mode (with those extra kernal parameters) but I'm not sure what to do once in there... Unfortunately using a more recent version of Fedora or even another Linux distribution altogether isn't an option becuase of outside constraints - which is annoying since I know for a fact Ubuntu works fine on this setup. I have not been using Linux that long, so treat me like an idiot - I am one. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks! • Using 1920x1200 mode on SyncMaster T260HD in Linux

  I just got a Samsung SyncMaster T260HD monitor. It works straight out of the box with Windows but I can't seem to get it to work with Linux, which is my primary OS for day to day work. The computer boots up but when going into graphical mode on Linux the monitor gives me a "Mode not supported" error and doesn't display anything. I booted up windows and, using PowerStrip, grabbed the exact ModeLine that should be used to get the equivalent setting in Linux and added it to my xorg config file but it doesn't seem to help. the ModeLine is: ModeLine "1920x1200" 153.9 1920 1984 2016 2080 1200 1203 1209 1235 +hsync -vsync This is the modeline for the working display settings in windows but it doesn't seem to work in Linux My complete entry in the xorg.conf file for the monitor is Section "Monitor" Identifier "Monitor0" ModelName "SyncMaster" DisplaySize 518 324 HorizSync 30.0 - 81.0 VertRefresh 56.0 - 75.0 Option "dpms" ModeLine "1920x1200" 153.9 1920 1984 2016 2080 1200 1203 1209 1235 +hsync -vsync EndSection I'm running Scientific Linux 5.4 (clone of Redhat Enterprise Linux 5.4) but I've tried booting with a recent Linux Mint Distro as well as Ubuntu 9.04 and had the same problem. • There's a stray current flowing from my monitor through the VGA cable to the PC. Is this safe?

  I have two monitors in my machine. One is an old LCS samsung monitor. Recently, I started to hear a small hum in my speakers (subwoofer) and replaced them. The new one also got the issues then I found our that its a grounding issue. I unplugged the PC's power chord. The monitor is still switched on. When I checked, there's current in the earth pin (ground pin). When I unplug the monitor, there's no current and the speaker is normal. Now, I have moved that monitor to my dad's machine and took his monitor. My question is, is it a big issues? The house's earthing system is working and its grounding the current. I won't feel it if I touch the machine like in many other cases. But still, is it good to keep that monitor attached to my machine? Can it harm the computer? What should I do?

• Spurious alleged file corruption on Windows 7

  Recently my Laptop sometimes warns about corrupted files on the hard drive (Samsung SSD PB22-JS3 TM). This has only happened so far when updating (or checking out) an SVN repository with either TortoiseSVN or the command line Subversion client. The fun thing is that the corrupted file has always been a .svn directory (although the directory entry may contain files in that directory too, if they're small enough?—?which should be the case with SVN). However, when looking into the warned-about directory I notice nothing strange or unusual and don't get any more warnings about it and another try (SVN stops updating once that error occurs?—?TortoiseSVN even with an appropriate error message) of updating the working copy works (well, mostly; sometimes it does it again, albeit with a different directory). Since the laptop is only a few months old I doubt the SSD is failing already—five months of normal usage shouldn't be too surprising. Also it (so far) occurred only with SVN updates on a large repository. • Toshiba Satellite U500 - Totally Damaged LCD

  I accidentally damaged my Toshiba Satellite U500 laptop which resulted in a totally unusable LCD. The LCD panel has some cracks on it, and I can only see black & white spots; the laptop frame became broken/bent to where I can partially see inside the PC; the accident disassembled the CD tray, and bent the keyboard frame (which now has a weird hump). The system is still working though. It responds to my inputs (eg, turning it on/off, typing my password @ Windows Login, etc). What I want to do now is to transfer all of my important data from that laptop to my external drive. But I don't know how since the LCD screen is unreadable. I know I can connect it to an external monitor or a TV (I have a Samsung 1080p TV) but I don't know how. What cable should I purchase to connect the TV? Which ports on the laptop and TV should I connect it to? Do I need press something while/after connecting it? Can I boot my laptop using the TV?

• Spurious alleged file corruption with an SSD

  Recently my Laptop sometimes warns about corrupted files on the hard drive (Samsung SSD PB22-JS3 TM). This has only happened so far when updating (or checking out) an SVN repository with either TortoiseSVN or the command line Subversion client. The fun thing is that the corrupted file has always been a .svn directory (although the directory entry may contain files in that directory too, if they're small enough?—?which should be the case with SVN). However, when looking into the warned-about directory I notice nothing strange or unusual and don't get any more warnings about it and another try (SVN stops updating once that error occurs?—?TortoiseSVN even with an appropriate error message) of updating the working copy works (well, mostly; sometimes it does it again, albeit with a different directory). Since the laptop is only a few months old I doubt the SSD is failing already—five months of normal usage shouldn't be too surprising. Also it (so far) occurred only with SVN updates on a large repository. • My EliteBook is not auto picking 1080p for external monitor, poor display on forcing

  I'm connecting my Samsung LED S22A300B to my HP EliteBook 6930p through VGA out. Laptop has Intel 4500MHD video card. I have latest drivers installed for both card and monitor. Only 800x600 and 1024x768 are shown. A lot of other people get this problem when they use it with docking station as discussed here. But I am not using any docking station. The monitor works great with my desktop though. As advised on the aforementioned page, one of the things I tried was to force the resolution using Intel's "custom resolution" feature. I installed PowerStrip on my desktop and copied advanced timing values(front/back porch,sync width, etc.) from there and then used the same values while defining a custom resolution in my laptop's Intel graphics utility. As a result, I got the 1080p resolution but the display is poor. Text has some weird colored shadow and sometimes on images too. What should I do?

• HP Officejet 4500 G510n-z Not Showing up in Remote Desktop (Terminal Services)

  I installed this printer on a windows XP machine. First using the wireless option, and later using USB. In both cases when I connect to my other computer (also Windows XP) via terminal services and check printers in the local resources tab it does not show up on the remote session. I used to have a Samsung connected to my local computer over USB and and that worked fine over terminal services. Things I tried so far: I did read this page and installed the software fix on both computers: (Printers that use ports that do not begin with...) I installed the minimum HP software install on the remote computer and that didn't help either. I also tried running the add new printer wizard on the remote computer: I selected "local printer attached to this computer" and did not check the "automatically.." option. On the next page of the wizard I can select an option for "use the following port". I see options for TS001 through TS009 there. I'm assuming those are coming from the local machine. I tried clicking each one and then checking "have disk" and pointing it to C:\3be8dc611b11322e8ddf8a67\i386\msxpsdrv.inf 1 but for every single TS00.. port it says "The specified location does not contain information about your hardware." Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm pretty stuck at this point. 1 C:\3be8dc611b11322e8ddf8a67 is the folder I extracted the HP driver software to after I downloaded it.

• Using native resolution on external display results in stretched, out of bounds image

  I have an HP min 311 netbook with Windows XP, which I've connected to a Samsung SyncMaster 2043BW display via the supplied analog cable. The external display's native res is 1680x1050, which the netbook's ION GPU supports. I've configured the external display as the single display (no cloning or any such fancy stuff). However, once I set the native res, the image just stretches out. It looks squashed, and it goes outside the monitor's edges. In contrast, lower resolutions manage to stay within the monitor's display edges, though obviously they are skewed in some way (vertically or horizontally). BTW, the only res which seems to be displayed relatively clearly (it's the least blurry) is 1280x720. I tried looking all over the web for an explanation/advice but could not find any. I already played with the settings on the external display itself several times. So either it's not that, or I missed something. Has someone run into this issue? I need help.

• Why can't I install Java?

  I've been searching high and low for someone who can help me. I've been trying for a month. A month. to install Java on my new PC to no avail. No tech support forum can seem to help me. It all started while playing tekkit one day. I kept running out of memory (using the 32-bit JRE 7 u45) so I decided to install the 64-bit version. I uninstalled the 32-bit version first, for some reason, and downloaded the 64 bit runtime. In the installer, I go through all the normal screens until the installation progress bar appears. Then, it just sits there. No progress is made. No CPU is used by the installer, or any of its dependencies. The installer will stay like this for hours, days, and in one case a whole week without doing anything at all. I've tried installing older versions, the 32-bit version, even Java 6 and none of them will install. UAC is disabled, I've run regedit, CCleaner, and any other "fix-it" program there is. It's getting to the point where I may just have to wipe my hard drives and start over. I have several applications that require java, so this is an absolute necessity. Please, please, someone have the answer. Here are my system specs: -Intel i7-3770k -AsRock z77 Extreme3 -Samsung 840 pro SSD -WD Caviar Black 1tb

• The best LCD monitors for reading text?

  I have been using an 19" Acer AL1916A B for several years now. While possibly failing in other areas - the text was incredibly sharp. Which is very important for someone like me that spends all day writing code. My eyes are very finely tuned and I can see refresh rates and even the smallest pixel overflows from anti-aliasing. Unfortunately it finally died. I then tried a 19" widescreen Acer X193w+ and found that the text was much less sharp. I also tried a 19" widescreen Samsung 920nw and was also disappointed. (by the way, widescreen is a great invention for companies - the same price for less screen!). I am looking for a couple of options of LCD's that hands-down render text ultra sharp and clear. This isn't subjective - an LCD either has sharp text or it doesn't. Anyone with delicate eyes can see the difference and knows what I'm talking about. Please also bare in mind that you're vision can adjust to a given screen; rendering your judgment biased if you do not constantly use other monitors also. If you use windows with ClearType enabled please do not reply.

• Nvidia Linux Driver Huge Resolution

  I'm trying to setup a working CUDA SDK on my Linux Mint. I'm new to Linux and everything connected with it. So, I tried following some steps on how to install CUDA. Firstly, I downloaded a Linux driver from here: http://developer.nvidia.com/cuda/cuda-downloads version 295.41. After that, I barely found a way to run it. I did it like this: 1. typed in sudo init 1 in terminal and switched to root 2. typed service mdm stop 3. ran the *.run file downloaded from the link above Then it started installing the driver. It gave some warning messages, but I ignored it. After installation, I typed init 5 and it came back to GUI screen, BUT everything is huge. I restarted, still huge. My screen resolution is 640x480 on a 17 inch laptop monitor. I tried running Nvidia X Server Settings, but it says: "You do not appear to be using Nvidia X Driver. Please edit your X configuration file." I tried that. Nothing happened. I cant change the resolution because that Nvidia Settings thing gives no options. Then I googled some things, installing some packages - nothing. The biggest problem is I don't understand whats really going on. My laptop is a Samsung with i7 and Nvidia Gt 650M with optimus. I cant even install bumblebee, but that is something I will try if I manage to get my resolution to default. Please, help!

• Enable CPU fan always on

  I am using 3 years old overheating laptop and I want my CPU fan to be spinning 24/7 regardless of the consequences. How to make it spin? The problem is that CPU & GPU heats up to 68°C (154 F) right after boot and never goes down, because CPU fan is not spinning full throttle. It starts spinning faster when temperature goes over 70°C and stops when it reaches seventy again. When doing heavy work on databases, it gets from 70 to 90 in no-time and automatically powers off. Bios does not contain any "fan spin 100%" options, just "spin slowly all the time" and "auto" which is more useless than the first one since my fan doesn't have pwm wire. Currently I'm solving this with cooling stand (3x5V), but it isn't much of a help. I would rather use the CPU fan since it is the only fan directly responsible for cooling down CPU/GPU. But how to make it spin 100% all the time? Should I attach it's red power wire to motherboard to get constant 5V (is there such option?), or is there an option to control it via software? Laptop: Samsung R528 2.3 GHz Intel i3 with Nvidia GeForce 310M Bios: Phoenix 03KT.M003.20100622.KSJ (and that is latest update) OS: Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS with 3.2.0.51 kernel CPU fan: Image/Description Has 5V 0,4A and only 3 pins, no pwm. P.S. Yes, I did clean everything with alcohol, freed the air vents, changed thermal paste etc; that reduced temperature by 4 degrees.

• Looking for an application that scrolls or pans netbook screens running Windows

  I'm looking for a Windows 7 and XP compatible Windows desktop panning/scrolling tool. This is to solve a problem where some applications for example MSN have settings/preference Windows that are not resizeable. I have a Netbook with a small maximum screen resolution e.g. 1024x600. The fixed non-resizeable windows are too large for this display screen size so I cannot see all of the items on these windows, particularly the OK button to save settings. What I would like is a desktop scrolling/panning tool where if I move my mouse pointer to any edge of the display, it pans to show the region of the too-large-fixed window that I could not see. I use a Samsung N110 and Toshiba NB100 netbooks.
