My goal is to talk about the things that work well and what won't work and promote the agile methods a little bit, because I think certain agile techniques are a good fit, but don't seem to be that common in real development.     If I publish my project now, with added license information, will the license still apply to the project if one goes back a few commits in the history to a state where I hadn't yet added any license information?     One of the best ways to learn about programming is reading high quality code/projects from great engineers. Which open-source projects do you think is worth looking at? I mean, that code that you can print and sit under a tree with a glass of wine and enjoy reading. If you can, also specify if the software is great to look at because its documentation, design, UML diagrams or just plain code. I believe UML is not very common within open-source projects. Is there such a thing as a project branch that polishes code and design with the sole objective to give other programmers a great example of great software?

  • Upgrading only certain packages via the getdeb repo

    I'm a bit confused about how getdeb.net works now. The last time I got a package from there was a while ago; at that point the procedure was that you would just download a .deb for each package that you wanted to install/upgrade and then install it using dpkg -i. However the inexorable march of progress has lent its trumpets to this system as well, and getdeb installs are now done via their repo, which is registered with apt in /etc/apt/sources.list.d, after you install a single package that makes the changes to the apt database. I've installed that package, and I've discovered that aptitude dist-upgrade now wants to upgrade a lot of packages on my system that weren't ready for upgrades prior to the installation of the getdeb package. If I rename the file /etc/apt/sources.list.d/getdeb.list to something with a different extension, then do aptitude update && aptitude dist-upgrade, it stops wanting to upgrade packages. So I gather that the default behaviour is now to upgrade all packages to the version available at getdeb. This is not particularly appropriate, since these packages are not as well tested as the officially released versions. Is there a config setting somewhere that will prevent upgrading packages to versions from the getdeb repo unless this action is specifically selected? I'd like to be able to pick and choose what packages are upgraded via getdeb.

    recently I created a java class " Custom Layout Manager ", which I want to make it open-source and distribute it. So it's not really a "product", nor a "complete program". Here's the list of permissions and specifications: You are free to use and modify with some limitations (packages and classes names, should remain the same, if you want another name, extend this class. - The .jar file, project name is ok to change). You don't need to share your modifications. You can't modify and then sell it to others. You can use it as part of your commercial software (For example: It's OK if: you created an instant messaging program, that uses my "Layout", since your "core bussiness" isn't the "Layout", but the msg program. It's NOT OK if: you created another "Layout" by extending it, added some features and sell it.) You can't remove the author's name nor the author's website address. You are free to donate. :D Basically, it's free and it's Ok as you give me credits and don't make money with it. I guess it might be a little bit complex, since you use it "commercially" but cannot sell it separately. I have seeked almost all the licenses, and the closest one was MIT license, but it says that you can sell it, so I don't really want to use this one. Is there any license that fits all these permissions I stated? Thanks.
