  • Setting creation or change timestamps

    - by Thanatos
Using utimes, futimes, futimens, etc., it is possible to set the access and modification timestamps on a file. Is there a function to set change timestamps? (I understand the cyclic nature of wanting to change the change timestamp, but think archiving software - it would be nice to restore a file exactly as it was.) Are there any functions at all for creation timestamps? (I realize that ext2 does not support this, but I was wondering if Linux did, for those filesystems that do support it.) If it's not possible, what is the reasoning behind it not being so?

  • Log with timestamps that have millisecond accuracy & resolution in Windows C++

    - by Psychic
I'm aware that for timing accuracy, functions like timeGetTime, timeBeginPeriod, QueryPerformanceCounter etc are great, giving both good resolution & accuracy, but only based on time-since-boot, with no direct link to clock time. However, I don't want to time events as such. I want to be able to produce an exact timestamp (local time) so that I can display it in a log file, eg 31-12-2010 12:38:35.345, for each entry made. (I need the millisecond accuracy) The standard Windows time functions, like GetLocalTime, whilst they give millisecond values, don't have millisecond resolution, depending on the OS running. I'm using XP, so I can't expect much better than about a 15ms resolution. What I need is a way to get the best of both worlds, without creating a large overhead to get the required output. Overly large methods/calculations would mean that the logger would start to eat up too much time during its operation. What would be the best/simplest way to do this?

  • getting number of hours until the next event

    - by Andrew Heath
I've got a table with this data: [ID] [event_name] [last_event] 1 stats 2011-01-01 01:47:32 last_event is a timestamp. The event occurs every 48 hours (it's a cron job). I'd like to show my users the number of hours until the event executes again. So far I've got: SELECT (lastFinish + INTERVAL 48 HOUR) FROM `cron_status` which gives me the exact time and date of the next occurence: 2011-01-03 01:47:32. So I figured if I subtracted the current datetime... SELECT ((lastFinish + INTERVAL 48 HOUR) - SYSDATE()) FROM `cron_status` which (I think?) gives me the difference in unix time: 1980015. But if I divide that by 3600 to convert the seconds to hours... SELECT (((lastFinish + INTERVAL 48 HOUR) - SYSDATE())/3600) FROM `cron_status` I get numbers an order of magnitude too high: 549.99. Where am I going wrong? The target is returning the number of hours until the next execution. Thank you!

  • PHP: producing relative date/time from timestamps

    - by KeyStroke
Hi, I'm basically trying to convert a Unix timestamp (the time() function) to a relative date/time that's both compatible with past and future date. So outputs could be: 2 weeks ago 1 hour and 60 minutes ago 15 minutes and 54 seconds ago after 10 minutes and 15 seconds First I tried to code this, but made a huge unmaintainable function, and then I searched the internet for a couple of hours, yet all I can find are scripts that produce only one part of the time (e.h: "1 hour ago" without the minutes). Do you have a script that already does this? If so, I'd really appreciate if you could share it. Thanks.

  • JVM system time runs faster than HP UNIX OS system time

    - by winston
Hello I have the following output from a simple debug jsp: Weblogic Startup Since: Friday, October 19, 2012, 08:36:12 AM Database Current Time: Wednesday, December 12, 2012, 11:43:44 AM Weblogic JVM Current Time: Wednesday, December 12, 2012, 11:45:38 AM Line 1 was a recorded variable during WebLogic webapp startup. Line 2 was output from database query select sysdate from dual; Line 3 was output from java code new Date() I have checked from shell date command that line 2 output conforms with OS time. The output of line 3 was mysterious. I don't know how it comes from Java VM. On another machine with same setting, the same jsp output like this: Weblogic Startup Since: Tuesday, December 11, 2012, 02:29:06 PM Database Current Time: Wednesday, December 12, 2012, 11:51:48 AM Weblogic JVM Current Time: Wednesday, December 12, 2012, 11:51:50 AM Another machine: Weblogic Startup Since: Monday, December 10, 2012, 05:00:34 PM Database Current Time: Wednesday, December 12, 2012, 11:52:03 AM Weblogic JVM Current Time: Wednesday, December 12, 2012, 11:52:07 AM Findings: the pattern shows that the longer Weblogic startup, the larger the discrepancy of OS time with JVM time. • Unix apt-get doesnt download from nfs locaiton

    - by pravesh
I have switched to unix from last 3 months and trying to understand install process and in particular apt-get. I am able to successfully install and download the packages when I configure my repository on http location in /etc/apt/sources.list file. e.g. deb http://web.myspqce.com/u/eng/rose/debian-mirror-squeeze-amd64/mirror/ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ squeeze main contrib non-free This command will download(/var/cache/apt/archive) and install the package when i use apt-get install When I change the source location to file instead of http(nfs mount point), the package is getting installed but NOT getting downloaded in /var/cache/apt/archive. deb file:/deb_repository/debian-mirror-squeeze-amd64/mirror/ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ squeeze main contrib non-free Please let me know if there is any configuration or settings that i have to make to let apt-get to both download and install package when i use (nfs)file:/ instead of http:/ in sources.list. To achieve this, I can use apt-get --downlaod-only and then use apt-get install for both download and install in two separate calls, but I want to know why package is not getting downloaded with apt-get install but only getting installed when used with file:/ in sources.list

  • Configure samba server for Unix group

    - by Bird Jaguar IV
I'm trying to set up a samba server with access for users in the Linux (RHEL 6) "wheel" group. I am basing smb.conf off of the example here where it goes through the [accounting] example. In my smb.conf I have [tmp] comment = temporary files path = /var/share valid users = @wheel read only = No create mask = 0664 directory mask = 02777 max connections = 0 (rest of the output from $ testparm /etc/samba/smb.conf is here). And groups `whoami` returns user01 : wheel. When I use the following command from another machine (Mac OS) as the Linux user (user01): $ smbclient -L NETBIOSNAME/tmp it asks for a password, I hit return without a password, and get: Enter user01's password: Anonymous login successful Domain=[DOMAIN] OS=[Unix] Server=[Samba 3.6.9-151.el6_4.1] Sharename Type Comment --------- ---- ------- tmp Disk temporary files IPC$ IPC IPC Service (Samba Server Version 3.6.9-151.el6_4.1) But when I try $ smbclient //NETBIOSNAME/tmp I try entering the password I use for the Linux login, and get a bunch of stuff logged, including check_sam_security: Couldn't find user 'user01' in passdb. ... session setup failed: NT_STATUS_LOGON_FAILURE (I can give more logging information if it would be helpful.) I can't find a reference to more steps I need to add group users in the resource. Should I be manually adding samba users from the group somehow? Thank you

  • Error during maven build: "[java] Timestamp response not valid"

Java returned: 10 This is a random error that pops up in various point during the build process, and sometimes the build will succeed and then the next one will fail again. This is really weird, does anyone seen this before? I'm using maven 2.2.1 BTW, the error return code 10 in windows mean "Environment is invalid.:

  • Timestamp as int field, query performance

    - by Kirzilla
Hello, I'm storing timestamp as int field. And on large table it takes too long to get rows inserted at date because I'm using mysql function FROM_UNIXTIME. SELECT * FROM table WHERE FROM_UNIXTIME(timestamp_field, '%Y-%m-%d') = '2010-04-04' Is there any ways to speed this query? Maybe I should use query for rows using timestamp_field >= x AND timestamp_field < y? Thank you I've just tried this query... SELECT * FROM table WHERE timestamp_field >= UNIX_TIMESTAMP('2010-04-14 00:00:00') AND timestamp_field <= UNIX_TIMESTAMP('2010-04-14 23:59:59') but there is no any performance bonuses. :(

  • Printing an East Coast Timestamp in Arizona time

    - by John
Hello, The code returns "datesubmitted" in a nice format. The field "datesubmitted" is a timestamp of East Coast time. How could I print it out as Arizona time? Right now, that would be 3 hours behind East Coast time. For now, I would be happy just to do that. However, during other parts of the year (when Daylight Savings time is not being used), Arizona time is only 2 hours behind East Coast time. Is there a way that I could print the date below so that Arizona time is always correctly displayed? Or would I have to change the code when Daylight Savings time stops and starts? Thanks in advance, John date('l, F j, Y &\nb\sp &\nb\sp g:i a &\nb\sp &\nb\sp \N\E\W &\nb\sp \Y\O\R\K &\nb\sp \T\I\M\E', strtotime($row["datesubmitted"]))

  • How can a string timestamp with hours 0 to 24 be parsed

    - by user897052
I am trying to parse a string timestamp of format "yyyyMMddHHmmss" with DateTime.ParseExact(). The catch is I must allow for an hour value of "24" (i.e. hours can be from 0 to 24; Note: I can't control the input values.) and, of course, that results in an exception. Are there any settings/properties I can set instead of manually parsing/using regex's? If not, any efficient parsing ideas? ex. DateTime.ParseExact("20120911240000", "yyyyMMddHHmmss", System.Globalization.CultureInfo.InvariantCulture); hour 24 means hour 0 of next day (so day + 1, hour = 0)

  • Which Perl moudle can handle variety of date formats with unicode characters ?

    - by ram
My requirement is parsing xml files which contains wide varieties of timestamps based on the locales at which they are written. They may contain Unicode characters in case of Chinese or Korean locales. I have to parse these timestamps and put then in a standard format something like 2009-11-26 12:40:54 to put them in a oracle database. Sometimes I may not even know the locale and yet I have to parse the timestamps. I am looking for a module that automatically detects the timestamp format (including unicode characters for am and pm in their local language) and converts in to epoch time so that I can convert it back to what ever way I like to. I have gone through similar questions in this forum. Few suggested DateFormat module, and Date::Parse module. The perl distribution I am using is 5.10 so Date::Manip doesn't come as a core module. As I am supposed to use just the basic core modules and few CPAN modules(on request I cannot ask for all), I request you to kindly suggest me a good module that suffices all my requirements. Thanks in advance

  • Adding Timestamp to Java's GC messages in Tomcat 6

  • Is there a POSIX pathname that can't name a file?

    - by Charles Stewart
Are there any legal paths in POSIX that cannot be associated with a file, regular or irregular? That is, for which test -e "$LEGITIMATEPOSIXPATHNAME" cannot succeed? Clarification #1: pathnames By "legal paths in POSIX", I mean ones that POSIX says are allowed, not ones that POSIX doesn't explicitly forbid. I've looked this up, and the are POSIX specification calls them character strings that: Use only characters from the portable filename character set [a-zA-Z0-9._-] (cf. http://www.opengroup.org/onlinepubs/009695399/basedefs/xbd_chap03.html#tag_03_276); Do not begin with -; and Have length between 1 and NAME_MAX, a number unspecified for POSIX that is not less than 14. POSIX also allows that filesystems will probably be more relaxed than this, but it forbids the characters NUL and / from appearing in filenames. Note that such a paradigmatically UNIX filename as lost+found isn't FPF, according to this def. There's another constant PATH_MAX, whose use needs no further explanation. The ideal answer will use FPFs, but I'm interested in any example with filenames that POSIX doesn't expressly forbid. Clarification #2: impossibility Obviously, pathnames normally could be bound to a file. But UNIX semantics will tell you that there are special places that couldn't normally have arbitrary files created, like in the /dev directory. Are any such special places stipulated in POSIX? That is what the question is getting after.

  • Remote Socket Read In Multi-Threaded Application Returns Zero Bytes or EINTR (104)

    - by user39891
Hi. Am a c-coder for a while now - neither a newbie nor an expert. Now, I have a certain daemoned application in C on a PPC Linux. I use PHP's socket_connect as a client to connect to this service locally. The server uses epoll for multiplexing connections via a Unix socket. A user submitted string is parsed for certain characters/words using strstr() and if found, spawns 4 joinable threads to different websites simultaneously. I use socket, connect, write and read, to interact with the said webservers via TCP on their port 80 in each thread. All connections and writes seems successful. Reads to the webserver sockets fail however, with either (A) all 3 threads seem to hang, and only one thread returns -1 and errno is set to 104. The responding thread takes like 10 minutes - an eternity long:-(. *I read somewhere that the 104 (is EINTR?), which in the network context suggests that ...'the connection was reset by peer'; or (B) 0 bytes from 3 threads, and only 1 of the 4 threads actually returns some data. Isn't the socket read/write thread-safe? I use thread-safe (and reentrant) libc functions such as strtok_r, gethostbyname_r, etc. *I doubt that the said webhosts are actually resetting the connection, because when I run a single-threaded standalone (everything else equal) all things works perfectly right, but of course in series not parallel. There's a second problem too (oops), I can't write back to the client who connect to my epoll-ed Unix socket. My daemon application will hang and hog CPU 100% for ever. Yet nothing is written to the clients end. Am sure the client (a very typical PHP socket application) hasn't closed the connection whenever this is happening - no error(s) detected either. Any ideas? I cannot figure-out whatever is wrong even with Valgrind, GDB or much logging. Kindly help where you can.

  • Colorizing your terminal and shell environment?

    - by Stefan Lasiewski
I spend most of my time working in Unix environments and using Terminal emulators. I try to use color on the commandline, because color makes the output more useful and intuitive. What are some good ways to add color to my terminal environment? What tricks do you do? What pitfals have you encountered? Unfortunately, support for color is wildly variable depending on terminal type, OS, TERM setting, utility, buggy implementations, etc. Here's what I do currently, after alot of experimentation: I tend to set 'TERM=xterm-color', which is supported on most hosts (but not all). I work on a number of different hosts, different OS versions, etc. I'm trying to keep things simple and generic, if possible. Many OSs set things like 'dircolors' and by default, and I don't want to modify this everywhere. So I try to stick with the defaults. Instead tweak my Terminal's color configuration. Use color for some unix commands (ls, grep, less, vim) and the Bash prompt. These commands seem to the standard "ANSI escape sequences" I've managed to find some settings which are widely supported, and which don't print gobbledygook characters in older environments (even FreeBSD4!) (For the most part). From my .bash_profile ### Color support # The Terminal application typically does 'export TERM=term=color' # Some terminal types will print Black, White & underlined with these settings. OS=`uname -s` case "$OS" in "SunOS" ) # Solaris9 ls doesn't allow color, so use special characters instead. LS_OPTS='-F' ;; "Linux" ) # GNU tools supports colors! • Patch management on multiple systems

    - by Pierre
I'm in charge of auditing the security configuration of an important farm of Unix servers. So far, I came up with a way to assess the basic configuration but not the installed updates. The very problem here is that I just can't trust the package management tools on those machine. Indeed some of them did not sync with the repository for a long time (So I can't do a "yum check-updates" on Redhat for example). Some of those servers are not even connected to the internet and use an company repository. Another problem is that I have multiple target systems: AIX, Debian, Centos/Redhat, etc... So the version could be different (AIX) and the tools available will be different. And, last but not least, I can't install anything on the target system. So I need to use a script to retrieve the information and either: process it directly or save the information to be able to process it later on a server (Which may happen to run a different distribution than the one on which the information have been retrieved). The best ideas I could come up with were: either retrieve the list of installed packages on the machine (dpkg -l for example on debian) and process it on a dedicated server (Directly parsing the "Packages" file of debian repositories). Still, the problem remains the same for AIX and Redhat... or use Nessus' scripts to assess vulnerability on the installed packages, but I find this a bit dirty. Does anyone know any better/efficient way of doing this ? P.S: I already took time to review some answers to similar problems. Unfortunately Chef, puppet, ... don't meet the requirements I have to meet. Edit: Long story short. I need to have the list of missing updates on a Unix system just like MBSA on Windows. I'm not authorized to install anything on this system as it's not mine. All I have are scripts languages. Thanks.

  • Rewriting UNIX cal(1)

    - by dharmatech
Hello, Today I was testing out SRFI 19 and wrote a simple version of the UNIX cal(1) command. Here's a version in R6RS Scheme which runs in Ikarus and Ypsilon. A few example runs. Schemers: How would you write it? Use your favorite implementation. Ruby and Python: I'm guessing that y'all have elegant date and time libraries. I'm sure you can put the Schemers to shame. ;-) Let's see what ya got. I'd also like to see Haskell and golfed versions. Is there a Stack Overflow tag for re-implementations of UNIX commands? :-) Ed

Most UNIX regular expressions have, besides the usual *,+,? operators a backslash operator where \1,\2,... match whatever's in the last parentheses, so for example L=(a)b\1* matches the (non regular) language a^n b a^n On one hand, this seems to be pretty powerful since you can create (a*)b\1b\1 to match the language a^n b a^n b a^n which can't even be recognized by a stack automaton. On the other hand, I'm pretty sure a^n b^n cannot be expressed this way. Two questions: 1. Is there any literature on this family of languages (UNIX-y regular). In particular, is there a version of the pumping lemma for these? 2. Can someone prove (or perhaps disprove) that a^n b^n cannot be expressed this way? Thanks

  • Reading file resource in Unix and MacOS

    - by Sanjeev
Hi, I am writing my first wxWidgets application which aims to be cross-platform. The program uses dll file for plugins and in Windows, reads dll resource part for information regarding plugin name, author name etc. I have never used Unix or MacOS (little Linux though) and am wondering whether compiling binary for these other OSes will require changes to the code written for Windows. For instance, is there a DLL equivalent in Unix and MacOS? Are there any provisions of compiling resource strings and files into a such files? Thanks, Sanjeev

  • How can I read pcap files in a friendly format?

    a simple cat on the pcap file looks terrible: $cat tcp_dump.pcap ?ò????YVJ? JJ ?@@.?E<??@@ ?CA??qe?U?????h? .Ceh?YVJ?? I can actually extract more information just viewing the RAW file. What is the best ( and preferably easiest) way to just view all the contents of the pcap file? UPDATE Thanks to the responses below, I made some progress. Here is what it looks like now: tcpdump -qns 0 -A -r blah.pcap 20:57:47.368107 IP 205.188.159.57.25 > 67.23.28.65.42385: tcp 480 0x0000: 4500 0214 834c 4000 3306 f649 cdbc 9f39 [email protected] 0x0010: 4317 1c41 0019 a591 50fe 18ca 9da0 4681 C..A....P.....F. 0x0020: 8018 05a8 848f 0000 0101 080a ffd4 9bb0 ................ 0x0030: 2e43 6bb9 3232 302d 726c 792d 6461 3033 .Ck.220-rly-da03 0x0040: 2e6d 782e 616f 6c2e 636f 6d20 4553 4d54 .mx.aol.com.ESMT 0x0050: 5020 6d61 696c 5f72 656c 6179 5f69 6e2d P.mail_relay_in- 0x0060: 6461 3033 2e34 3b20 5468 752c 2030 3920 da03.4;.Thu,.09. 0x0070: 4a75 6c20 3230 3039 2031 363a 3537 3a34 Jul.2009.16:57:4 0x0080: 3720 2d30 3430 300d 0a32 3230 2d41 6d65 7.-0400..220-Ame 0x0090: 7269 6361 204f 6e6c 696e 6520 2841 4f4c rica.Online.(AOL 0x00a0: 2920 616e 6420 6974 7320 6166 6669 6c69 ).and.its.affili 0x00b0: 6174 6564 2063 6f6d 7061 6e69 6573 2064 ated.companies.d etc. This looks good, but it still makes the actual message on the right difficult to read. Is there a way to view those messages in a more friendly way? UPDATE This made it pretty: tcpick -C -yP -r tcp_dump.pcap Thanks!
