  • Slow Windows Explorer on Windows 7

    I have Laptop with i7 (4 cores), 8GB ram and SSD OCZ Vertex 3 MaxIOPS which in testing that I did just now does 400mb/s+ read/write. However the responsiveness of Windows Explorer is far from being perfect. Opening up Computer, Documents, going into folders is very slow (1-5seconds). I don't have any viruses or spyware and I have tried changing properties to optimize view for General Items. I tried disabling Search Indexer but it made search in Outlook 2010 crawl and didn't bring any other effect. Even double clicking on file takes some time to open things up (like clicking a Word document). I don't have any drives mapped, my computer is not joined to domain. I have multiple VPN connections that I connect to but they all have disabled default gateways. I tried using CC Cleaner or some Windows 7 Tweaks app to disable some things. I am power user using Visual Studio, Tortoise SVN and other developer/administration apps. Any non obvious ideas? Edit: So I've been trying to pinpoint where the issue comes from and it seems that straight after reboot Windows Explorer opens very fast, when I load 3-4 programs (Royal TS, Visual Studio, Outlook) it's noticeably slower and the more programs I have it gets worse. After I start closing programs it starts working better and if I leave 2 open it's fast again. I tried doing some research with DiskMon and other programs from sysinternals but couldn't find anything suspicious.   • windows 2003 under Hyper-V - can't send/receive ping

    I've installed Windows 2003 x64 R2 SP2 under Hyper-V (the Windows Pro 8 edition). I have a NIC configured but I can't move any traffic on it. In particular I can't send or receive Pings. Scoreboard There is a second VM running Ubuntu under the Windows 8 host which is able to send and receive pings from the host O/S . When I try to ping from Windows 2003 guest to Windows 8 host I get 'Request Timed Out'. When I try to ping from Windows 8 host to Windows 2003 guest I get 'Reply from 192.168.10.107 Destination Host Unreachable'. There's no problem pinging from the Ubuntu guest to the Windows 8 host and no problem pinging from the Windows 8 host to the Unbuntu guest. Environment Integration services are installed on Windows 2003. The windows 2003 needs a static IP address of 192.168.10.15. The Windows 2003 ipconfig output looks like this : While the host o/s ipconfig output looks like this : Event Logs The only things I can see in the event logs which is (a) looks signifcant and (b) is not related to the lack of networking is this : I'm not sure if that's significant or not. Hyper-V and NICs When the Windows 2003 guest was first booted it had no NIC; I subsequently added a 'Legacy Network Connector' which I couldn't get Windows 2003 to recognise; I subsequently removed that and added a 'Standard Network Connector' and at least on the surface this works ... only it doesn't. 'Virtual Network Type' is external. Although I've only mentioned ping there's no other evidence of network activity. 'Allow incoming echo request' is enabled on the Windows 2003 guest. HELP ? What else should I look at or do to resolve this problem ? EDIT 1: I should have said that I turned off the firewall on the W2003 server for a while and retested the pings; same result.

    Hi. I have a following situation: I need to deploy a windows service that listens for incoming request on tcp port (basically WCF service). I have a High Availability requirement - the service must be deployed on two servers and if the service stops (only the service, not the whole server) on one server, all the requests must be redirected to the second one. For me it looks like a basic failover scenario. How can I achieve this on Windows Server 2003? Should I use Microsoft Cluster Service or Network Load Balancing? The important part is that the process of swapping the servers should not concern the clients (the client must see only single address / single host or domain name). Thanks in advance for help.

  • Timeout option not working on efi windows 7/windows8 dual boot machine

    I hav a gigbyte GA-Z77m-D3h mobo and installed Windows 8 Pro and Windows 7 Ultimate on two SSDs (in that order) in EFI mode. Now when I start my computer, I get the windows boot menu (text mode) with the two OSses to choose, but I have to manually press RETURN to have the computer boot into the Win OS. Even if I wait an hour, no default action takes place. Using bcdedit (from either of the OSses) I can successfully change the time out value, and it shows up in the bcdedit (no params) output. But it doesn't fire ...   • Set Default Program for All Users on Server

    I work with a large server environment that's running Windows Server 2003, 2008, and 2012 now on some boxes. We have a custom-built log viewer program that associates with two file types that I'd like to set to be the default program for all users across all boxes, so new users don't have to set the default program themselves on every box they log into. Ideally I'd like to have a simple registry script we could push out to all machines at once. I realize this likely means changing the registry entries for either HKCR or HKLM for the file extensions, but adding the program location with %1 extension to \shell\open\command value in HKLM simply opens the program and does not also load the log file. Am I just missing an open and play setting, or am I looking at this entirely wrong? (And I know the script will need to be different for 2003 and 2008, but changing the version for two scripts isn't hard) Thanks!

    I have a drive with failed sectors ect... I can't image it with Acronis as it hangs. I can't with Knoppiz it hangs. CHKDSK hangs. I want to use DDRescure but I don't have any Linux boxes running at the moment. I could do is in a VM but that seems like it would be slow and problematic? Are there any ways I can data recovery this disk from my Windows machine or is there an ideal way to work with DDRescue on Windows?

    my sister is using Acer laptop, that has an intel WLAN card and supports windows hosted network(checked in command prompt).Am using the basic way using netsh wlan command also, then am using netsh start wlan command.The hosted network gets created and it could b seen in "Network and Sharing Center" as the . I also went to Device manager, selected WLan card, made sure"allow this device to wake computer from sleep" is selected. Now I went to the newly created , clicked properties, and under sharing enabled allow this to be shared(but I am not able to select The name of the wifi my sis wants to share (in this case her college wifi name, LEts say QP4,Ethernet and Local Area connection are the only two option that are coming). Also the SSID name is not being shown in her mobile nor when I click the tower icon at the tray area,Any suggestions on what might be going wrong?She is using windows 8. Should I look for updated drivers? Her laptop is only 6 months old, i don't think the drivers are outdated. Any advice shall be appreciated.

  • Remove Ubuntu or XP from the Windows 7 Boot Menu

    If you’ve ever used a dual-boot system and then removed one of the operating systems, it can still show up in Windows 7’s boot menu. We’ll show you how to get rid of old entries and speed up the boot process. To edit the boot menu, we will use a program called bcdedit that’s included with Windows 7. There are some third-party graphical applications that will edit the menu, but we prefer to use built-in applications when we can. First, we need to open a command prompt with Administrator privileges. Open the start menu and type cmd into the search box. Right click on the cmd program that shows up, and select Run as administrator. Alternatively, if you’ve disabled the search box, you can find the command prompt in All Programs > Accessories. In the command prompt, type in bcdedit and press enter. A list of the boot menu entries will appear. Find the entry that you would like to delete – in our case, this is the last one, with the description of “Ubuntu”. What we need is the long sequence of characters marked as the identifier. Rather than type it out, we will copy it to be pasted later. Right-click somewhere in the command prompt window and select Mark. By clicking the left mouse button and dragging over the appropriate text, select the identifier for the entry you want to delete, including the left and right curly braces on either end. Press the Enter button. This will copy the text to the clipboard. In the command prompt, type in: bcdedit /delete and then right-click somewhere in the command prompt window and select Paste. Press Enter to input the now completed command. The boot menu entry will now be deleted. Type in bcdedit again to confirm that the offending entry is now gone from the list. If you reboot your machine now, you will notice that the boot menu does not even come up, because there is only one entry in the list (unless you had more than two entries to begin with). You’ve shaved a few seconds off of the boot process! Not to mention the added effort of pressing the enter button. There’s a lot more that you can do with bcdedit, like change the description of boot menu entries, create new entries, and much more. For a list of what you can do with bcdedit, type the following into the Command Window. bcdedit /help While there are third-party GUI solutions for accomplishing the same thing, using this method will save you time by not having to go through the extra steps of installing an extra program.     In October 2011 I wrote a blog post entitled ObjectStorageHelper<T> – A WinRT utility for Windows 8 where I introduced a little utility class called ObjectStorageHelper<T> that I had been working on while noodling around on the Developer Preview of Windows 8. ObjectStorageHelper<T> makes it easy for anyone building apps for Windows 8 to save data to files. How easy?     I have a wide screen of high resolution and I see everything small on it. So In windows I set the display to 150%, I would like to do something similar in Ubuntu. Simply changing screen resolution to lower resolution doesn't help because Ubuntu is in a virtual machine and it simply changes the VM window to the actual resolution. Is there a command or a simple hack that can do the trick? EDIT: I am running Ubuntu as a VirtualBox VM on Windows 7 host.

  • State / Screen management in Entity Component Systems

    My entity/component system is happily humming along and, despite some performance concerns I initially had, everything is working fine. However, I've realized that I missed a crucial point when starting this thing: how do you handle different screens? At the moment, I have a GameManager class which owns a component manager and entity manager. When I create an entity, the entity manager assigns it an ID and makes sure it's tracked. When I modify the components that are assigned to an entity. an UpdateEntity method is called, which alerts each of the systems that they may need to add or remove the entity from their respective entity lists. A problem with this is that the collection of entities operated on by each system is determined solely by the individual Systems, typically based on a "required component" filter. (An entity has to have a Renderable component to be rendered, for instance.) In this situation, I can't just keep collections of entities per screen and only Update/Draw those collections. They'd have to either be added and removed depending on their applicability to the current screen, which would cause their associated components to be removed, or enable/disable entities in a group per screen to hide what's not supposed to be visible. These approaches seem like really, really crappy kludges. What's a good way to handle this? A pretty straightforward way that comes to mind is to create a separate GameManager (which in my implementation owns all of the systems, entities, etc.) per screen, which means that everything outside of the device context would be duplicated. That's bothersome because some things are always visible, or I might want to continue to display the game under a translucent menu window. Another option would be to add a "layer" key to the GameManager class, which could be checked against a displayable layer stack held by the game manager. *System.Draw() would be called for each active layer, in the required order as determined by the stack. When the systems request an iterator for their respective entity collections, it would be pre-filtered to a (cached) set of those entities that participate in the active layer. Those collections could be updated from the same UpdateEntity event that's already used to maintain each system's entity collections. Still, kinda feels like a hack. If I've coded myself into a corner, feel free to throw tomatoes as long as they're labeled with a helpful suggestion. Hooray for learning curves.

  • Force gdm login screen to the primary monitor

    I have two monitors attached to my video card. Primary monitor has a resolution equal to 1280x1024 and the second has 1920x1200. My gdm login screen always appears on the second monitor even if it is switched off. My question is how to force gdm to show the login screen always on the primary monitor with resolution 1280x1024? I use Nvidia GT9500 videcard in Twinview mode. I can't use Xinerama because vpdau doesn't work correclty in this mode.

If I watch a movie on YouTube using Chromium or Firefox my screen will turn off as is set in System Settings Brightness and Lock.     On 12.04 64-bit, about every 5 seconds my screen blinks twice. Even during installation of Ubuntu from CD, this happens during the complete process. I had no problems with earlier Ubuntu versions (earlier version was 10.04LTS 64-bit) System specs: I7-2600K MSI 7681 Motherboard 16 GB RAM 2 x Nvidia 560 card SLI (only 1 screen on 1 card active during install process) This flickering is driving me crazy, please help.

  • How can I change the default screen resolution?

    Here's the scoop: I have a crappy VisionQuest TV that I am currently using as a monitor on my computer running XBMCbuntu. It defaults to 1280x768 which the TV will not display correctly. It appears to be the correct size, but the screen is panned WAY to the left. The TV works fine on 1024x768 with the screen sitting in the right spot. Problem is, I have to change the resolution to 1024x768 every time I boot up. Any ideas?

    So I've got a brandynew System 76 laptop running Ubuntu 14.04, and if I close the lid, putting it to sleep, and reopen it, I am presented with the very nice new Unity lock screen. However, when I enter my password, and it succeeds, it then presents me with a second lock screen. Where I have to enter my password again, before finally being let into the desktop. Hash anyone else seen this sort of behavior?

  • xubuntu app menu on wrong side of screen

    I am using Xubuntu 12.04, with a dual monitor setup (with the nvidia driver xinerama enabled). The top panel is spanned acros the two monitors. This works quite fine, except for one thing. When I click the little Application Menu button on my left screen, the application menu opens on the top right corner of the left screen. This is quite annoying, I fiddled in the panel prefs but could not fix this. Any thoughts?

  • Starting one BlackBerry screen from another.

    I've recently run into a snag while putting on the finishing touches for my BlackBerry app. I'm building a login screen which, if the user is successful in logging in, goes to a data loading screen, and then to a home screen. From the home screen, you can use the app. Everything works great but one thing, I can't seamlessly move from the login screen to the loading screen, to the home screen. I can move from the login screen to the loading screen ok, because I'm doing that via a button click which is on the GUI thread, but then I have the login screen at the bottom of the stack and can't get it out using the dismiss method. Once in the loading screen, I can't push the home screen because I'm not doing it via the gui method, though I'm able to update the GUI via the following piece of code: private void checkData(){ Timer loadingTimer = new Timer(); TimerTask loadingTask = new TimerTask() { public void run() { // set the progress bar progressGaugeField.setValue(DataManager.getDataLoaded()); // for repainting the screen invalidate(); } }; loadingTimer.scheduleAtFixedRate(loadingTask, 500, 500); } Does anyone know how to solve my problem of moving seamlessly from the login screen to the loading screen to the home screen?
