• VMware Player- no Maverick GUI after install

  I'm experimenting with using both VMware Player and Virtualbox to run an Ubuntu VM in Win7. I have the VB install of Maverick working fine, and with only a few quirks such as slow response in Firefox scrolling and the occasional freeze, it works fine. However, making backup copies of a VB machine for storage is a PIA, and so I would like to see how Player works in the same situation. I created a new VM with 2GB RAM & 30GB hard drive space. The install went smoothly, but everytime I start the VM, no GUI shows and I have no mouse control. It brings me to a screen saying Ubuntu Easy Install: VMware Player is installing VMware Tools.. please wait. At this point, I get a login prompt and then goes to a standard CLI interface. At this point, I have no mouse control at all. The CPU and memory gauge that I have as a Win7 screenlet shows no changes and minimal HDD activity. The VMWare site says to install the Tools by a tarball, going to VMInstall VMware Tools, but I can't do that with no mouse control. Any solutions?

• Why is it that software is still easily pirated today?

  I've always been curious about this. Now I wouldn't call myself a programmer yet, but I'm learning, so maybe the answer to this is obvious. It just seems a little hard to believe that with all of our technological advances and the billions of dollars spent on engineering the most unbelievable and mind-blowing software, we still have no other means of protecting against piracy then a "serial number/activation key". I'm sure a ton of money, maybe even billions, went into creating Windows 7 or Office and even Snow Leopard, yet I can get it for free in less than 20 minutes. Same for all of Adobe's products, which are probably the easiest. I guess my question is: can there exist a fool proof and hack proof method of protecting your software against piracy? If not realistically, how about theoretically possible? Or no matter what mechanisms these companies deploy, hackers can always find a way around it? EDIT: So apparently, the answer is no. There's pretty much no way. And so I'm sure these big companies have realized this as well. Should they adopt another sales model rather than charging a crapload for their software (I know its justified and they put a lot of hard work into their software, but its still a lot of money). Are there any alternative solutions that will benefit both the company and the user (i.e. if you purchase our product, we'll apply $X dollars to your account that will apply to future purchases from our company)?

• What is the best way to "carve" a terrain created from a heightmap?

  I have a 3d landscape created from a heightmap. I'd like to "carve" some holes in that terrain. That will allow me to create bridges, caverns and tunnels inside it. That operation will be done in the game editor so it doesn't need to be realtime. In the end, rendering is done using traditional polygons. What would be the best/easiest way to do that ? I already think about several solutions : Solution 1 1) Create voxels from the heightmap (very easy). In other words, fill a 3D array like this : voxels[32][32][32] from the heightmap values. 2) Carve holes in the voxels as i want (easy too). 3) Convert voxels to polygons using some iso-surface extraction technique (like marching cubes). 4) Reduce (decimate) polygons created in 3). This technique seems to be the most promising for giving good results (untested). However the problem with marching cubes is that they tends to produce lots of polygons thus reducing them is mandatory. Implementing 4) also seems not trivial, i have read several papers on the web and it seems pretty complex. I was also unable to find an example, code snippet or something to start writing an algorithm for triangle mesh decimation. Maybe there is a special decimation algorithm (simpler) for meshes created from marching cubes ? Solution 2 1) Create some triangle mesh from the heighmap (easy). 2) Apply severals 3D boolean operation (eg: subtraction with a sphere) to carve the mesh. 3) apply some procedure to reduce polygons (optional). Operation 2) seems to be very complex and to be honest i have no idea how to do that. Also applying many boolean operation seems to be slow and will maybe degrade the triangle mesh every time a boolean operation is applied.

• bluetooth headset can connect, but not visible in pulse audio

  I have a plantronics bluetooth headset, and until yesterday I could use it without any problem. However, today it suddenly stopped working (maybe related to the last software update I did). I can still connect/disconnect my headset, but it doesn't show up in pulse audio anymore. I read through various posts that describes kind of the same problem, but none of the suggested solutions worked. • Unknown filesystem error

  My computer has (had) a dual boot of Ubuntu Precise and Windows 7. Recently, when I started the computer, grub gave me an error saying "Unknown filesystem", and sent me to grub rescue. I searched for solutions to this, and found this answer: Unknown filesystem error: grub rescue. I followed the instructions there, but they didn't really help: when I restarted the computer, it went straight to Windows without grub intervening at all (so it boots successfully, just not to the OS I want). This is the log from boot-repair. My Ubuntu partition is sda6. Naturally, I'm a little worried, since the log says "unknown filesystem type ''", which to me looks like the partition might be corrupt somehow. From the Ubuntu Live CD, I started gparted and looked at my partitions, and it also told me that my sda6 is an unknown filesystem. So my questions are basically: Can I restore Ubuntu to the way it was? If not, can I at least rescue the data I had on the partition somehow? Again, if I can't restore Ubuntu, how do I clean everything up so that I can reinstall it without too many complications? Another thing I should mention is that yesterday I had a similar problem where the computer told me there was a problem with the hard drive when it was starting, but it fixed itself by running fsck (that time it got past grub, and managed to start Ubuntu). Between that occasion and me having trouble booting the computer today, I have booted it successfully at least twice. Thanks for any help!

• Debugging Windows Service Timeout Error 1053

  If you ever receive an Error 1053 for a timeout when starting a Windows Service you've written, the underlying problem might not have anything to do with a timeout.  Here's the error so you can compare it to what you're seeing: --------------------------- Services --------------------------- Windows could not start the Service1 service on Local Computer.   Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion. --------------------------- OK   --------------------------- Searching the Web for a solution to this error in your Windows Service will result in a lot of wasted time and advice that won't help.  Sometimes you might get lucky if your problem is exactly the same as someone else's, but this isn't always the case.  One of the solutions you'll see has to do with a known error on Windows Server 2003 that's fixed by a patch to the .NET Framework 1.1, which won't work.  As I write this blog post, I'm using the .NET Framework 4.0, which is a tad bit past that timeframe. Most likely, the basic problem is that your service is throwing an exception that you aren't handling.  To debug this, wrap your service initialization code in a try/catch block and log the exception, as shown below: using System; using System.Diagnostics; using System.ServiceProcess; namespace WindowsService { static class Program { static void Main() { try { ServiceBase[] ServicesToRun; ServicesToRun = new ServiceBase[] { new Service1() }; ServiceBase.Run(ServicesToRun); } catch (Exception ex) { EventLog.WriteEntry("Application", ex.ToString(), EventLogEntryType.Error); } } } } After you uninstall the old service, redeploy the service with modifications, and receive the same error message as above; look in the Event Viewer/Application logs.  You'll see what the real problem is, which is the underlying reason for the timeout. • SQL SERVER – Storing Variable Values in Temporary Array or Temporary List

  SQL Server does not support arrays or a dynamic length storage mechanism like list. Absolutely there are some clever workarounds and few extra-ordinary solutions but everybody can;t come up with such solution. Additionally, sometime the requirements are very simple that doing extraordinary coding is not required. Here is the simple case. Let us say here are the values: a, 10, 20, c, 30, d. Now the requirement is to store them in a array or list. It is very easy to do the same in C# or C. However, there is no quick way to do the same in SQL Server. Every single time when I get such requirement, I create a table variable and store the values in the table variables. Here is the example: For SQL Server 2012: DECLARE @ListofIDs TABLE(IDs VARCHAR(100)); INSERT INTO @ListofIDs VALUES('a'),('10'),('20'),('c'),('30'),('d'); SELECT IDs FROM @ListofIDs; GO When executed above script it will give following resultset. Above script will work in SQL Server 2012 only for SQL Server 2008 and earlier version run following code. DECLARE @ListofIDs TABLE(IDs VARCHAR(100), ID INT IDENTITY(1,1)); INSERT INTO @ListofIDs SELECT 'a' UNION ALL SELECT '10' UNION ALL SELECT '20' UNION ALL SELECT 'c' UNION ALL SELECT '30' UNION ALL SELECT 'd'; SELECT IDs FROM @ListofIDs; GO Now in this case, I have to convert numbers to varchars because I have to store mix datatypes in a single column. Additionally, this quick solution does not give any features of arrays (like inserting values in between as well accessing values using array index). Well, do you ever have to store temporary multiple values in SQL Server – if the count of values are dynamic and datatype is not specified early how will you about storing values which can be used later in the programming. Also, new worldwide greenhouse gas legislation is putting added pressure on companies to report the impact of their emissions and energy usage on the environment. • Why is Samba Access from Windows So Slow?

  I have set up a file server using Ubuntu 12.04 Server. The purpose is to serve several network drives to Windows users that have heretofore been served by numerous NAS drives. I have Samba set up with one share defined so far. I can connect to it fine from my test Windows 7 and Windows XP machines. When I do a directory listing on the share from Windows, it can take up to two minutes to get all the files listed--would have taken about 1.5 seconds when I was using the Buffalo NAS. Sometimes it times out with no response at all. I have used the default smb.conf and simply added the following for the share I have set up so far: [engineering] comment = Ubuntu File Server Share path = /networkdriveshares/engineering browsable = yes guest ok = yes read only = no create mask = 0755 I have tried changing the workgroup setting to the Active Domain name our Windows computer use but didn't notice any difference. The only other change I made to the default smb.conf was adding in the recommended socket settings: SO_RCVBUF=8192 SO_SNDBUF=8192 socket options = TCP_NODELAY Lots of information about slow Samba shares online but I have tried all of the solutions I have found and none have made a lick of difference. If there is no solution, is there a better way to set up a file server to be used by Windows clients?

• Cannot set monitor to native resolution

  problem is similar to so many other users, but solutions found do not work. Background: Fresh install of 12.04 (completely updated) on a Fit-PC2 (specs). Read in several places that the new 3.X kernel that 12.04 runs on has a new psb_gfx driver which supports the gma500 graphics card (poulsbo chipset). All's pretty much working (there are some glitches which are documented, so I won't raise them here), except for the screen resolution. My native monitor resolution is 1920X1080, but all I get is 1024x768. Output running xrandr: xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default Screen 0: minimum 1024 x 768, current 1024 x 768, maximum 1024 x 768 default connected 1024x768+0+0 0mm x 0mm 1024x768 0.0* Although I read that Ubuntu does not come with an xorg.conf file anymore, I also tried running sudo X :1 -configure, and here's the end of the output: Number of created screens does not match number of detected devices. Configuration failed. When I look in the xorg.conf.new file created in my home directory, it seems that for some reason X thinks I have two screens. Don't know what to do with that. Ideas anyone? • How to design highly scalable web services in Java?

  I am creating some Web Services that would have 2000 concurrent users. The services are offered for free and are hence expected to get a large user base. In the future it may be required to scale up to 50,000 users. There are already a few other questions that address the issue like - Building highly scalable web services However my requirements differ from the question above. For example - My application does not have a user interface, so images, CSS, javascript are not an issue. It is in Java so suggestions like using HipHop to translate PHP to native code are useless. Hence I decided to ask my question separately. This is my project setup - Rest based Web services using Apache CXF Hibernate 3.0 (With relevant optimizations like lazy loading and custom HQL for tune up) Tomcat 6.0 MySql 5.5 My questions are - Are there alternatives to Mysql that offer better performance for what I'm trying to do? What are some general things to abide by in order to scale a Java based web application? I am thinking of putting my Application in two tomcat instances with httpd redirecting the request to appropriate tomcat on basis of load. Is this the right approach? Separate tomcat instances can help but then database becomes the bottleneck since both applications access the same database? I am a programmer not a Db Admin, how difficult would it be to cluster a Mysql database (or, to cluster whatever database offered as an alternative to 1)? How effective are caching solutions like EHCache? Any other general best practices? Some clarifications - Could you partition the data? Yes we could but we're trying to avoid it. We need to run a lot of data mining algorithms and the design would evolve over time so we can't be sure what lines of partition should be there.

• What is the best way to restrict access to adult content on Ubuntu?

  I bought my kids a PC and installed 12.04 (Unity) on it. The bottom line is, I want my children to use the computer unsupervised while I have confidence they cannot access anything inappropriate. What I have looked at: I was looking at Scrubit a tool which allows me configure my wifi router to block content and this solution would also protect my other PC and mobile devices. This may be overkill as I just want the solution to work on one PC. I also did some Google searches and came across the application called Nanny (it seems to look the part). My experience of OSS is that the best solutions frequently never appear first on a Google search list and in this case I need to trust the methods therefore my question is very specific. I want to leverage your knowledge and experience to understand “What is the best way to restrict adult content on 12.04 LTS” as this is important to me. It maybe a combination of things so please don't answer this question "try this or that", then give me some PPA unless you can share your experience of how good it is and of course if there are any contraints. • How can I perform 2D side-scroller collision checks in a tile-based map?

  I am trying to create a game where you have a player that can move horizontally and jump. It's kind of like Mario but it isn't a side scroller. I'm using a 2D array to implement a tile map. My problem is that I don't understand how to check for collisions using this implementation. After spending about two weeks thinking about it, I've got two possible solutions, but both of them have some problems. Let's say that my map is defined by the following tiles: 0 = sky 1 = player 2 = ground The data for the map itself might look like: 00000 10002 22022 For solution 1, I'd move the player (the 1) a complete tile and update the map directly. This make the collision easy because you can check if the player is touching the ground simply by looking at the tile directly below the player: // x and y are the tile coordinates of the player. The tile origin is the upper-left. if (grid[x][y+1] == 2){ // The player is standing on top of a ground tile. } The problem with this approach is that the player moves in discrete tile steps, so the animation isn't smooth. For solution 2, I thought about moving the player via pixel coordinates and not updating the tile map. This will make the animation much smoother because I have a smaller movement unit per frame. However, this means I can't really accurately store the player in the tile map because sometimes he would logically be between two tiles. But the bigger problem here is that I think the only way to check for collision is to use Java's intersection method, which means the player would need to be at least a single pixel "into" the ground to register collision, and that won't look good. How can I solve this problem?

  I'm researching about 2D game for Android to implement an Android Game Project. My project looks nearly like PaperToss. Instance of throwing a page, my game will throw a coin. Suppose that I have a coin put in three-dimensional that have coordinates at A(x,y,z). I throw that point ahead, after 1/100 second, that coin move from A(x,y,z) to A'(x',y',z'). By this way, I have two problems need to solve. Determine the formulas can be used to compute the coordinates of the coin at time t. This problem is under-researching. I have no idea to solve this problem. Mapping three-dimensional points to a two-dimensional and use those new coordinates (a two-dimensional coordinates) to draw our coin on screen. I have found two solutions for this problem: Orthographic projection & Perspective projection However, my old friend said that OpenGL supports to solve problems like my problems. Any body have experiences about my problems? Help me please :) Thank for reading my question.

• xubuntu install on p4

  Hello i am thinking of installing xubuntu on a dell gx260 pentium 4 pc with: 1.8GHz processor 64mb integrated video card(had other but it died on me) 1GB of RAM Ive installed lubuntu but im not enjoying it since i can not make shortcuts of partitions or folders on desktop for faster usability(i dont want them on my bar, want them on desktop) also the buggs i seen on it made me reconsider of using lubuntu:mplayer not working, no video was working,chromium outdated etc and i dont want to stay all day to find solutions over the internet. And seen on internet from xubuntu that theyve had shortcuts for theyre partitions on desktop, and is more attractive.(can some1 tell me if with xubuntu u can make shortcuts on desktop, i mean the shortcuts remain after reboot) 1 more thing to add:at installing lubuntu when it asked me where to install it only showed me the entire hard drive(i have 3 partitions on it) and made me select the size of the lubuntu partition from 1 that the installer wanted.(from local disk D: from windows xp view),need to mention that i have windows xp on the machine which is on local C:, kept my downloads on local D:, and other stuff on E:. I want an ubuntu distro which would work fine especially for internet purpose. Can someone lend me a hand on this?

• Is the development of CLI apps considered "backward"?

  I am a DBA fledgling with a lot of experience in programming. I have developed several CLI, non interactive apps that solve some daily repetitive tasks or eliminate the human error from more complex albeit not so daily tasks. These tools are now part of our tool box. I find CLI apps are great because you can include them in an automated workflow. Also the Unix philosophy of doing a single thing but doing it well, and letting the output of a process be the input of another, is a great way of building a set of tools than would consolidate into an strategic advantage. My boss recently commented that developing CLI tools is "backward", or constitutes a "regression". I told him I disagreed, because most CLI tools that exist now are not legacy but are live projects with improved versions being released all the time. Is this kind of development considered "backwards" in the market? Does it look bad on a rèsumè? I also considered all solutions whether they are web or desktop, should have command line, non-interactive options. Some people consider this a waste of programming resources. Is this goal a worthy one in a software project?
