  • FTP server questions

    I'm currently trying to set up a home FTP server using debian and proftpd and I've run into a problem that has me confused. I have most things set up already, I believe, but I cannot access my ftp server using my external ip. I've forwarded the correct port on my router and I've checked http://www.yougetsignal.com/tools/open-ports/ to be sure that it is, in fact, opened. I've used telnet locally on my server to check that the port accepts connections. I am able to use ftp via LAN. But, I still cannot access anything externally. I'm thinking that there's still some router configuration to be done in order to fix this, such as routing all connections on my ftp port to my server via the internal ip, but I can't find any option on my router to do this. Is this a necessary step? There is an option to use DMZ hosting, but I'd rather avoid it if possible. I can provide additional information as requested, please let me know any information that you think could help at all. Thanks. -Brad PS - I have a Telus Actiontec Modem/Router Update - !! Trying my ftp server out at work, worked! I guess I did set it up correctly after all. What is confusing me, though, is why doesn't the server allow me to connect locally anymore? That seems very weird to me. Also, I don't really understand why I am denied outright if I attempt to connect from the same network using the external address. I'll look into it more when I get home, but thank you guys for your help. Update 2 - I found the problem with not being able to connect locally anymore. I was setting the masquerade address to my external IP and for some reason that was causing it to hang on MLSD when I connected using my LAN address. I've removed the masquerade address and I'm going to check if I need it at work tomorrow. I'll update this page if I find anything.

  • push commits to git (gitolite) repository messes up file permissions (no more trac access)

    already posted here so feel free to answer there. everytime i commit/push something to the git server the file permissions change (all added/edited files in the repository have no read and execute access for the group). thus trac can't access the repository. do I need to change permissions of the folder differently? chmod u=rwx,g=rx,o= -R /home/git/repositories or do i need to setup gitolite somehow to write files with different permissions??? regards, klemens

  • MKV video suddenly stops playing after random time - what could this be?

    I have this HP USB drive (16GB, NTFS formatted) that has, a MKV video. The USB is always detectable, so is the MKV, but when I connect that USB drive with that MKV video on my HT-C5530 home cinema USB port, the playback just suddenly stops after random time, and it returns to the main menu when I can see the pen and it's contents. I really have no clue about what could be the issue here, has someone else experience something similar? That may help me out on this.

  • How to disable my netbook's touchpad when a usb mouse is connected.

    This is the first computer I have ever bought and I couldn't bring it home without a mouse of its own. I'm trying to disable the touchpad but the only option I find is by uninstalling the drivers, which I think is a bit drastic, the buttons for activation and deactivation are disabled (I'm using windows 7 starter). Do you have any idea of how to disable the touch pad when an external mouse is hooked up?

  • Random directories in c:\ that I cannot delete

    I just noticed a few directories in C:\ with long, random hex values. Each of these contains an update directory. When I click on the update directory, I get an access denied message, even though my account has admin privileges (XP Home). Two questions: How can I delete these folders, and how is it possible to restrict a folder this way?

    I just edited the htaccess file to include: AuthType Basic AuthName "My Protected Area" AuthUserFile /home/path/to/public_html/ Require valid-user I then created a htpasswd file via the htpasswd command. I have enabled the module: LoadModule authn_file_module modules/mod_authn_file.so in the Apache configuration. Now, when I load the page I now get a 500 error and apache log says "configuration error: couldn't check user. No user file?: /"

    Hi, I have a small home network with the router capable of running OpenWRT, is there some utility or firewall rule, which can be used to Wake On LAN on request. What I think - if I want to access my media centre (using for example SSH or HTTP) and it is suspended, is it possible to catch the ICMP packet (saying the machine is offline) and send the WOL packet to wakeup the machine and resend the SSH or HTTP request? I've discovered, that if the VPN is active, and I leave the computer, the computer does not go to sleep automatically, as it should. If i disconnect VPN, it works. Why is that ? How can I ensure that my PC can go into sleep mode automatically even with the VPN connection on ?

  • iPhone4: Keep playing songs after song selected from Search iPhone screen ends?

    When I first got my iPhone 4, if I selected a song from the "search iPhone" screen (when you hit home twice), iTunes would start playing a playlist of all my songs, starting with the selected one. I recently updated it to 4.2.1 (I don't remember exactly what I was at before). Now, when I select a song from the "Search iPhone" screen, iTunes starts playing a playlist containing only that song. Is there a way I can get the old behavior back?

  • linux disk usage report inconsistancy after removing file. cpanel inaccurate disk usage report

    relevant software: Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 6.3 (Santiago) cpanel installed 11.34.0 (build 7) background and problem: I was getting a disk usage warning (via cpanel) because /var seemed to be filling up on my server. The assumption would be that there was a log file growing too large and filling up the partition. I recently removed a large log file and changed my syslog config to rotate the log files more regularly. I removed something like /var/log/somefile and edited /etc/rsyslog.conf. This is the reason I was suspicious of the disk usage report warning issued by cpanel that I was getting because it didn't seem right. This is what df was reporting for the partitions: $ [/var]# df -h Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/sda2 9.9G 511M 8.9G 6% / tmpfs 5.9G 0 5.9G 0% /dev/shm /dev/sda1 99M 53M 42M 56% /boot /dev/sda8 883G 384G 455G 46% /home /dev/sdb1 9.9G 151M 9.3G 2% /tmp /dev/sda3 9.9G 7.8G 1.6G 84% /usr /dev/sda5 9.9G 9.3G 108M 99% /var This is what du was reporting for /var mount point: $ [/var]# du -sh 528M . clearly something funky was going on. I had a similar kind of reporting inconsistency in the past and I restarted the server and df reporting seemed to be correct after that. I decided to reboot the server to see if the same thing would happpen. This is what df reports now: $ [~]# df -h Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/sda2 9.9G 511M 8.9G 6% / tmpfs 5.9G 0 5.9G 0% /dev/shm /dev/sda1 99M 53M 42M 56% /boot /dev/sda8 883G 384G 455G 46% /home /dev/sdb1 9.9G 151M 9.3G 2% /tmp /dev/sda3 9.9G 7.8G 1.6G 84% /usr /dev/sda5 9.9G 697M 8.7G 8% /var This looks more like what I'd expect to get. For consistency this is what du reports for /var: $ [/var]# du -sh 638M . question: This is a nuisance. I'm not sure where the disk usage reports issued by cpanel get their info but it clearly isn't correct. How can I avoid this inaccurate reporting in the future? It seems like df reporting wrong disk usage is a strong indicator of the source problem but I'm not sure. Is there a way to 'refresh' the filesystem somehow so that the df report is accurate without restarting the server? Any other ideas for resolving this issue?

  • How to boot more than 1 linux distro along with windows?

    I have a machine that currently has Windows Vista living peacefully with Ubuntu 10.04 but I would like to test out another distro outside of a virtual machine without destroying my current Ubuntu or Windows installs. Is this possible? If so, any recommendations on how to arrange the partitions? I was thinking of moving user home areas to a separate partition and having 1 partition for all Ubuntu files and 1 for all files associated with the other distro.

  • Reliable access to Internet but not local network (not DNS or proxy issues)

    I'm looking for help with a Vista Home Premium laptop that has trouble accessing any resource on our home network, but accesses the Internet just fine. The set-up is this: The Vista laptop and a MacBook Pro connect wirelessly to the router-modem. A Synology DS212j NAS drive has a wired connection to the router-modem. Devices on the local network are always referred to by IP address, so this cannot be a DNS issue. The MacBook Pro connects reliably to the NA via AFP (network shared folders), SMB (network shared folders) and HTTP. The Vista laptop connects to and browses sites on the Internet without any problems. It can log into the NAS via SMB and list the shared folders (so there is nothing wrong with the log-in credentials), but when it tries to open any of the folders Explorer just hangs with the spinning cursor for several minutes and then says "\192.168.1.64\shared\Photos is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The specified network name is no longer available." It can ping the NAS successfully. If I try to open the NAS drive's web interface, the browser just hangs. This is the same with IE, Firefox and Chrome. (There is no proxy.) I can log into the NAS drive with FTP and navigate directories, but when I try to list the contents of a directory with more than a handful of entries, the ftp client hangs. I set up a website on the MacBook. The Vista laptop was able to load some of the pages, but loading any of the images was very hit and miss. Images embedded in HTML pages never worked no matter how many times I reloaded the page, but when I linked directly to the image it did load (though several attempts were sometimes needed). I tried all of this with the Windows Firewall turned off, and with AVG turned off. That made no difference. I'd really appreciate any suggestions anyone can make. The fact that the Vista laptop has trouble with HTTP and FTP as well as SMB connections suggests to me that this is a problem at the TCP level or below. But don't forget it accesses sites outside the LAN with no problems.

After working a bit lately with Netgears ReadyNAS's units, I have become really spoiled with how easy it was to set up network shares and giving a specific user different levels of network access to a specific share (forbidden access, read, read/write).   • Recreate/Regenerate vhost config in cpanel for one account

    So my boss as allways was messing with cpanel on our production server (we only have production servers, which is bad enough)... so now all of the accounts is pointing to the default apache page in /usr/local/apache/htdocs instead of /home/useracc/public_html. Is there a way how to tell cpanel/WHM to recreate the vhost configuration of the account from scratch? the account has a database and emails associated with them so before i do anything i don't want to mess anything up with cpanel.

  • Setting up Virtual Hosts with Apache on Windows 2008 server for multiple sites. Complicated setup, including subversion

    I am setting up apache on my windows 2008 server at my home. It will serve 2 functions. Subversion hosting to allow me and some others to manage company documents with version control Local website hosting for web development. Will need to run several websites since I generally work on more then one site at a time. Heres what I have done so far. I set up subversion and apache 2.2 using some walk troughs. I changed the default port to 1337. (im a nerd) Using dyndns.com I created a domain to forward to my home ip which is dynamic. ( company.gotdns.org) I then went into my DNS for my company.com and added a record to point repo.company.com to company.gotdns.org At this point people who need access to my file repository can access by going to repo.company.com/repo which is good so far. My question comes on the next step, setting up virtual hosts with apache. Ideally I would like to have my local website be viewable by some others in the company from their homes. So, say I am working on site1, I would like to have them be able to view this by going site1.roeland.bythepixel.com. At the same time, I would like to have site10.wouter.bythepixel.com go to his local setup for site10. What I have done for this: I went into my DNS for company.com and added a record to point roeland.company.com to company.gotdns.org (which translates to my ip). I added code to my httpd-vhosts.conf (listed at bottom) I added code to my host file (listed at bottom) Hah, so of course this doenst work as excepted.. going to site1.roeland.bythepixel.com doesnt bring up my test1 site. Could anyone point me where I may be going wrong?   • VNC connection via SSH proxy machine

    I would like to make a VNC connection from home to a Windows machine at work. The Windows machine is not accessible from the outside, but there is a Linux box that does have port 22 open, so it would seem that this can be done. I suspect it's just a command that "forwards" connections to port 22 on the Linux machine to the Windows machine? Just can't find an example that does exactly this though Thanks in advance!

    I get this error when installing any network adapter on my computer: The device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31) I have tried many different adapters and many different drivers. Any ideas?
