• Difference between User Control and Custom Control Library

  I'm working on creating a date/time user control in WPF using C# 2008. My first user control. I'm also using Matthew MacDonald's book, "Pro WPF in C# 2008". In that book he strongly recommended creating a user control using the WPF Custom Control Library project template; so I followed his suggestion. I've finished writing the code which would go into what I think of as the code-behind file. Now I'm ready to write the XAML. The only problem is, I just discovered there is no corresponding .xaml file? So, I don't get why using a WPF Custom Control Library project is better, or prefered, when writing a user control?

• Resources for dashboard app backend design

  I am looking for examples of code/data/infrastructure design for a dashboard-style webapp. I am designing an interface for staff and faculty at a university to access departmental resources and be alerted of cyclical processes, events, deadlines, etc. Technologies I am working with: apache tomcat 6 and a mySQL database, JSP (including JSTL), bootstrap 3, and javascript/jquery. I have basic experience most of these technologies building smaller web apps but was hoping someone could direct me towards a book or other resource that discusses how to design the db architecture (and maybe how to template) for a dashboard, esp. for something like a notification systems. Any suggestions?

• How can I use a carriage return in a HTML tooltip ?

  Hi, I'm currently adding verbose tooltips to our site, and I'd like (without having to resort to a whizz-bang jQuery plugin, I klnow there are many!) to use carriage returns to format the tooltip. To add the tip I'm using the 'title' attribute. I've looked around the usual sites and using the basic template of: <a title='Tool?Tip?On?New?Line' >link with tip</a> I've tried replacing the '?' with: <br /> &013; / &#13; \r\n Environment.NewLine (I'm using C#) Neither work.   In the following code, Foo::add calls a function via a function object: struct Plus { inline int operator()(int x, int y) const { return x + y; } }; template<class Fct> struct Foo { Fct fct; Foo(Fct f) : fct(f) {} inline int add(int x, int y) { return fct(x,y); // same efficiency adding directly? } }; Is this the same efficiency as calling x+y directly in Foo::add? In other words, does the compiler typically directly replace fct(x,y) with the actual call, inlining the code, when compiling with optimizations enabled?

• How do I get User.message_set messages to show up for the built in test client?

  I'm aware that the old Django messages framework is deprecated, but I still would like to know the answer to this. When I go to a certain url to my broswer, a message is created, I am redirected to a different page, and I see the message correctly displayed by my template. When the test client goes to the same url, the message is created, it gets a redirect, and after following the redirect there are no messages. However, no messages appear in the response (the response gotten from following the redirect). Why not?

• Grails - showing page processing/render debug information in development mode

  I've been experimenting with Grails for the past two days and, so far, I'm really happy with it. Coming from Rails, the only thing I've really been missing here is the dev-mode debug information shown after the page has been served. I've tried the "debug" plugin but its not very useful as it only shows the total processing time. I know it's not hard too roll something of my own (except for that database stats part), I just wanted to make sure I wasn't unnecessarily reinventing the wheel.

  Hello, i'm building a template engine for my next project, which is going great. It replaces {tag} with a corresponding value. But, i want {tag[0][key]} to be replaced as well. All i need to know is how to get the value, if i have the string representation of the array and key, like this: $arr = array( 0=>array( 'key'=>'value' ), 1=>array( 'key'=>'value2' ) ); $tag = 'arr[0][key]'; echo($$tag); This is a very simple version of the problem, i hope you understand it. • Ideas on limiting content to single printed page?

  I have 5-6 text areas that users fill out in a template (a couple of columns, basically a newsletter format). I'm needing to limit their content to one printed page, but I'm having a hard time coming up with practical solutions. The printed format (margin, font size, etc.) will be the same for all users, as it's printed from a central source. I've had a couple of ideas, but all of them seem rather unreliable and difficult to implement: Determine height of content using JavaScript and estimate the number of printed pages from that. The problem with this is that browser font sizes can vary, it's only a rough estimate (pixels to inches), etc. Limit the number of characters. This is problematic because there are various text fields, certain characters (like M) take up more space than others (like I), and line breaks obviously count for much more. What ideas do you all have? I appreciate your help!

• How do I style just the thumbnail image in this post?

  I need help with some CSS styling. I've tried various options with Firebug and cannot sort this out. How can I style the thumbnails on my posts (eg url: http://thatcriticguy.com/index.php?post/4/crossover-9-revamped-reinvented-and-a-must-have) and not style all images in the post at the same time. I have numerous posts on this site and need to only style the ones that are thumbnails that float right. Is there a way to do this without modifying the template code just using CSS?

  Hi I am just wondering in VS2010 the web.config is broken up into web.config web.debug.config web.release.config So from what I gathered is the web.config is just like the master template. So I am guessing in my debug I could put things like my local database where in my release one I would put my server database. Now how does it know when to use the release version or debug version? I also here that you can have more than 2. How does that work?

• Adding a javascript immediate after body tag

  I am making a drupal module. My requirement in the module is that when the module is activated then it needs to add a javascript in page.tpl file just after the body tag. Can anyone help me how to do this. I have tried using drupal_add_js but it will not exactly put the script after body tag, rather puts inside the head or below in footer. I also tried using template variable and preprocess method but the problem is the preprocess method replaces the old value of that variable with the new one. Is there a way how i can implement this in.

• Are these Mozilla-specific CSS styles doing anything?

  I'm working with some CSS (from a Joomla template) like this: div#logo { -moz-background-clip: border; -moz-background-inline-policy: continuous; -moz-background-origin: padding; background: transparent url(../images/head.png) no-repeat scroll 0 0; ... } I've looked up some of those -moz- properties and they seem to be assigned their default values, and if I turn them off in Firebug nothing happens visibly. Would there be a reason to add them to a CSS file? Are they for an old version of Firefox perhaps?

• Unable to import example projects from book (newbie question)

  I am trying to import projects from a book "Beginning Android 2" but when I choose the root directory the "Finish" button is still grayed out. I've tried importing the project from scratch with no success, and I've also tried to create a template project with the same name and everything and then importing into that (Import existing projects into workspace) but it always says "No projects are found to import". The contents of the folder are: Res folder, src folder with .java file, the manifest, build, and default.properties files. I am new to android dev (obviously) so I appreciate the help.

  Hi, If you have a ListView with its view set as a GridView, which itself contains columns for each month say.....how do I set a template up for the ItemTemplate of the ListView so that each Item will be three rows high, and be inline with the ListView.View's columns?   Hi, I have been reading templates,functors,callback function for the past week and have referred some good books and articles. I however feel that, unless I can get good practice - programming in templates and use functors-callbacks there is no way I can really understand all the concepts or fluently use them while coding. Could anyone suggest some articles or books or websites where , there is a definition of the problem and also a solution to the same. I could just write code for the problem and check later on if my solution is good enough.. I am also aware that some of our stack-overflow members are experts in templates and callback functions. It would be great if they could design a problem and also post a solution , where a lot of template beginners like me could benefit.

  Under WindowsCE, C++ project, I'm trying to work with devices connected via both "real" serial ports and/or serial-to-usb wrappers ("virtual" serial ports); my problem is - when I try to open the port, if something goes wrong, the function never returns and the system goes into some non-responsive state and has to be eventually rebooted. I need to open the ports from the main thread.   While reading Wikipedia's page on decltype, I was curious about the statement, Its [decltype's] primary intended use is in generic programming, where it is often difficult, or even impossible, to name types that depend on template parameters. While I can understand the difficulty part of that statement, what is an example where there is a need to name a type that cannot be named under C++03? EDIT: My point is that since everything in C++ has a declaration of types. Why would there ever be a case where it is impossible to name a type? Furthermore, aren't trait classes designed to yield type informations? Could trait classes be an alternative to decltype?

• accessing variable sheet ranges within Google spreadsheet?

  I've been trying to keep this little project entirely within Google docs, but I may have hit a wall. The spreadsheet is being used as a way for multiple users to record individual events with a Template they duplicate. I want to be able to compile a list of names of those attended onto a "report" sheet from all of the unique sheets, which should be after a certain sheet index [3] to [infinite]. Is this sort of variable sheet range possible in Google spreadsheets or do I need to go to the API to get this accomplished?
