  I need to install the dumbest possible service (a binary) and have it reliably run as the current user at boot (or login, whatever) at as many platforms as possible (of the aging point-of-sale type). The app monitors another archives generated by another app in the user-session. Startup alternatives considered: init.d @reboot in crontab a .desktop file in ~/.config/autostart a myriad of other solutions including .profile and .bashrc All of the above break down at some point. The problems stem from not wanting to run as root (I want the files generated to be user-accessible), and not having a way to reliably get the current user name in sudo on all platforms. Ideally not even sudo can be assumed available. Hey, I just want to run something on boot and I have "root" power to do so. Windows get the job done easily enough. This isn't rocket science, is it?

• Upgraded from ubuntu 12.04 to 12.10 issues

  I recently upgraded 12.04 to 12.10 ubuntu and then all hell broke loose. Being more specific, I have a Compaq machine and its hard disk is partitioned into 3 parts, so when I installed Ubuntu 10.04, I installed it in windows, since then have upgraded with each new ubuntu release via the update manager without any problems. I have installed the 64 bit versions. 12.10 downloaded via update manager, and initial downloading of packages was without problems, however, as it tried to install the packages, error messages appeared. The first was one about missing lib files, but I clicked to continue, since I am a relative novice on ubuntu. It continued, and during the restart process, when it was powering down, the computer hanged on the shutting down bit without rebooting for more than half an hour, so I manually shut down the machine and restarted it. Then a new error message appeared stating could not find disk, and I hit the manual fix option, and it now boots to an empty ubuntu desktop with my wallpaper but no launcher and the graphics appears as if this was put on a 640 x 480 resolution, and the screen no longer fits onto my 19" LCD. I had to use Ctrl-Alt-T to log out and then restart from there. How can I resolve this issue. Please help!

• Google Analytics account setup for multiple personal websites?

  I have multiple personal websites that I develop and plan to develop more over time. The number of websites is currently greater than one but less than 50. Currently I have a single Google account with a single analytics account that has a web property for each of my sites. My understanding is that you can have up to 25 analytics accounts attached to a single google account and each of those 25 acccounts can have up to 50 web properties in them which would allow me to track up to 1,250 sites. I don't think I'll be hitting that number anytime soon, however are there other reasons to structure accounts differently, such as using a separate google account for each site and then adding myself as an administrator?

  Is there any good reason as to why factory restore partitions are generally much larger than they need to be? Examples I have found in my own experience: Dell XPS laptop Partition: 13.67 GB Used: 6.68 GB Dell Inspiron laptop Partition: 14.7 GB Used: 7.2 GB Toshiba laptop Partition: 15.3 GB Used: 9 GB In all cases, shrinking the partition to only slightly more than the Used space had no ill effects on future factory restorations. Why the exorbitant amount of extra space, given that neither of the three computers ever writes any data to the recovery partition? Is there a good reason I'm overlooking?

  I'm looking to get publicly available facebook feeds (i.e. Google's facebook page/posts). However instead of forcing the user to sign into their own facebook app, I want to be able to access these posts. I've looked into using "App Access Tokens" however since my application is a native/Desktop app (iOS, Android, WP8/Win 8) I'm not able to do this. Is there a way to get publicly accessible feeds from facebook without user authentication? I'm using the Facebook C# SDK to access facebook. • Why does Silverlight 4 ClientHttp WebRequest prompt the user for a login and password?

  One of the new features of the client http stack in Silverlight 4 is the ability to supply network credentials. When I use this feature Windows shows a "Windows Security" message box that prompts the user for a login and password (text in the box is "The server xx at xx requires a username and password. Warning: This server is requesting that your username and password be sent in an insecure manner (basic authentication without a secure connection)."). I'm setting the login and password as shown below so I'm not sure why this is displayed. My code is: var request = WebRequestCreator.ClientHttp.Create(new Uri("http://myserver:8080/gui/?list=1")); request.Credentials = new NetworkCredential("login", "password"); request.BeginGetResponse(new AsyncCallback(OnRequestComplete), request); If I enter the username and password into the messagebox the request completes successfully. For a number of reasons I'd rather prompt the user for the login and password so I'd like to avoid the messagebox if possible. My setup is Silverlight 4 final, VS 2010 final, Windows 7 x86. The application is out of browser with elevated permissions.

Using the primary key of aspnet_Users is preferable to having to create my own GUID (which I could do and store in the profile). I've been working on a complex "user feed" type of functionality for a while now, and after experimenting with various union plugins, hacking named scopes, and brute force, have arrived at a solution I'm happy with. S.O. has been hugely helpful for me, so I thought I'd post it here in hopes that it might help others and also to get feedback -- it's very possible that I worked on this so long that I walked down an unnecessarily complicated road. For the sake of my example, I'll use users, groups, and articles. A user can follow other users to get a feed of their articles. They can also join groups and get a feed of articles that have been added to those groups. What I needed was a combined, pageable feed of distinct articles from a user's contacts and groups. Let's begin. user.rb has_many :articles has_many :contacts has_many :contacted_users, :through => :contacts has_many :memberships has_many :groups, :through => :memberships contact.rb belongs_to :user belongs_to :contacted_user, :class_name => "User", :foreign_key => "contacted_user_id" article.rb belongs_to :user has_many :submissions has_many :groups, :through => :submissions group.rb has_many :memberships has_many :users, :through => :memberships has_many :submissions has_many :articles, :through => :submissions Those are the basic models that define my relationships. Now, I add two named scopes to the Article model so that I can get separate feeds of both contact articles and group articles should I desire. article.rb # Get all articles by user's contacts named_scope :by_contacts, lambda {|user| {:joins => "inner join contacts on articles.user_id = contacts.contacted_user_id", :conditions => ["articles.published = 1 and contacts.user_id = ?", user.id]} } # Get all articles in user's groups.   We use Facebook Connect on our site in conjunction with the WWW::Facebook::API CPAN module to publish to our users newsfeed when requested by the user.   Hello! I have such situation - I'd like to build timeline control. So I have UserControl and ItemsControl on it (every row represents some person). The ItemsControl contains another ItemsControl as ItemsControl.ItemTemplate - it shows e.g. events for the person arranged by event's date. So it looks as some kind of grid with dates as a column headers and e.g. peoples as row headers. ........................|.2010.01.01.....2010.01.02.....2010.01.03 Adam Smith....|......[some event#1].....[some event#2]...... John Dow.......|...[some event#3].....[some event#4]......... I can have a lot of persons (ItemsControl #1 - 100-200 items) and a lot of events occured by some day (1-10-30 events per person in one day) the problem is that when user scrolls ItemsControl #1/#2 it happened toooo sloooooowwww due to a lot of elements should be rendered in one time (as I have e.g. a bit of text boxes and other elements in description of particular event) Question #1 - how can I improve it? May be somebody knows better way to build such user control? I have to mention that I'm using custom Virtual panel, based on some custom Virtual panel implementation found somewhere in internet... Question #2 - I'd like to make image with help of WriteableBitmap and render data bound control to image and to show image instead of a lot of elements. Problem is that I'm trying to render invisible data bound control (created in code behind) and it has actualWidth/Height equals to zero (so nothing rendered). How can I solve it? (I'm talking about the bar that appears sometimes when you submit a form on Firefox, that says "Remember the password for yoursite.com? Yes / Not now / Never") This is super frustrating because this feature of Firefox (and most other modern browsers, which I hope work in a similar fashion) seems to be a mystery. It's like a magic trick the browser does, where it looks at your code, or what you submit, or something, and if it "looks" like a login form with a username (or email address) field and a password field, it offers to save. Except in this case, where it's not offering my users that option after they use my login form, and it's making me nuts. :-) (I checked my Firefox settings-- I have NOT told the browser "never" for this site. It should be prompting.) My question: exactly what the heuristics are that Firefox (or any other modern browser) uses to know when it should prompt the user to save? This shouldn't be too difficult to answer, since it's right there in the Mozilla source (I don't know where to look or else I'd try to dig it out myself). You'd think there would be a blog post or some other similar developer note from the Mozilla developers about this but I can't find that either. (* Note that if your answer to me has anything to do with cookies, encryption or anything else that is about how I'm storing the user's passwords in the database, you've probably misread my question. :-)

  I have a SQL and VS 2008 web application that I need to capture the full file path (directories and file name) from the selected file on the client computer. So user selects a file and then clicks on one of the buttons which transfers control to my code for processing. So how do I get its file path? I can get the file name, but not the path. Maybe problem is that while testing this web app, I am using the server instead of client machine. And I learned that on a server you cannot read the full file path due to security concerns. Is this true? If I just want this to work on client machine, which method/class do you recommend? And then how can I test it? My web app allows the user to select an input file and then map columns from the input .MDF file with columns from the selected Adventureworks table. Finally, after they click on the "Append" button, it adds rows from the input file to that table. So I want to capture the path info after they click this button.

The business logic is pretty simple - If they become a fan, track it in my database. Then if they try to become a fan again, check with the library if they are a fan and say "You are already a fan" if they are a fan, show the widget if not.

• Adding Control to Container Control that is in User Control - How to properly initialize?

  Let's say I have a user control MyUserControl, which has a container control (it's a server control, but it could just be a Panel) and a dropdownlist. The dropdownlist is not in the container control initially. In it's code-behind, I am overriding OnInit and creating the user control, which includes populating a dropdownlist and adding that dropdownlist to my container control. I have a public property Year, which is an int. Based on the value of Year, I want to populate the dropdownlist. The problem is that in OnInit, year is always 0. On the page Init, I am setting year, but that doesn't run until AFTER the control's Init runs. If I try to set the value on PreInit on the page, the page hasn't initialized the control and I get invalid null reference when setting a value to the control. My question is: How can I properly initialize the control? How can I set the value on the page, before the control actually gets initialized? If I move the control's code to OnLoad, it'll work until I have to do a postback. In this case I need to, though!

  By reading some tutorials online I used these commands: Make a local group: net localgroup CopsshUsers /ADD Deny access to this group at top level: cacls c:\ /c /e /t /d CopsshUsers Open access to the copSSH installation directory: cacls copssh-inst-dir /c /e /t /r CopsshUsers Add Copssh user to the group above: net localgroup CopsshUsers mysshuser /add simply put these commands will try to create a usergroup that has no permission on your computer and it only have access to the copSSH Installation directory. This is not true, since you cannot change the permission on your windows directory, the third command won't remove access to windows folder (it says access denied on his log). Somehow I achieved that by taking ownership of Windows folder and then i execute the third command so CopsshUsers has no permissions on windows folder from now on. Now i tried to SSH to the server and it simply can't login! this is kind of funny because with permission on windows directory you can login and without it you can't!! So if you CAN SSH to the server somehow you know that you have access to the windows directory! (Is this really true??) Simple task: Limiting ssh user account only to access his home directory on WINDOWS and nothing else! Guys please help!

  TLDR Using plain HTML / Javascript (Client Side) I want to prevent viewing of certain pages. The user will have to type a username and password and depending on that they get access to different pages. Answers can NOT include server side whatsoever It does not matter if they can break it easily. There is no sensitive information etc. Also the target audience will not have access to internet OR probably know what a cookie is... At some point the user will have to type username / password.(I can define the cookie here) Currently I thought of using cookies to set a cookie for each page to say "true" / "false" but that would get messy with so many cookies. Or setting an array within a cookie for each page? I have div field "#Content" which as it looks encompasses all of my content on the page so blocking out content will be as simple as replacing it with ("sorry you don't have access") etc. For Example: $.cookie("Access","page1, page2, page3"{ expires: 1 }); I am looking for anyway to do this does not have to be with cookies. Would be nice to get a discussion of different ways this can be done. So the question is: What do YOU think would be a good way to go about doing this with client side validation?

  My customer has some specific requirements for a graph to show in our web app. We use HighCharts elsewhere in the app for more traditional graphing, but it doesn't seem to work for this situation. Their requirements: Allow the user to select a background image, set the scale and origin of the coordinate system. We'll graph our points against the user-defined coordinates. Points can be color coded Mouse-over boxes show more detail about the points Support for zooming and panning, scaling the background appropriately Less importantly: Support for drawing vectors off the points Some of this seems basic, but looking around at different graph packages, I was unable to find any with an example of this kind of usage. I've entertained the thought of just hacking it together in canvas myself, but I've never worked with canvas before so I don't think it would be cost effective. The basics of plotting points with a scaled coordinate system against an image background wouldn't be too hard, but the mouse-over details, zooming and panning sound much more daunting to me. More info: Right now we use jQuery, HighCharts, and ExtJS for our app. We tried flot in the past but switched to HighCharts after flot didn't meet our needs.

  So, I'd like for a user to see an error message if he submits a comment and the :name is blank (typical error message, don't need help with that). However, I'd then like to allow the user to skip that validation once he's been notified that "we like all comments to have a name." So, he submits the comment once, sees the notification, then can submit the form again unchanged if he really doesn't want to add a name, and the validates_presences_of :name is skipped. But, I'm not sure how to go about doing this. I thought about checking to see where the request is coming from, but after a create, errors are handed off to the "new" action, which is the same as actual "new" comments. I then thought about checking to see if flash[errors] were present, but that won't work because there are other validations a comment has to pass. Finally, I thought about trying a validates_presences_of :name, :unless = :notified but wasn't sure how to define notified. I honestly hate asking such an open ended question, but wasn't sure where to get started. So, is there a way to just check a certain validation once?

  How do I detect in the Windows Registry if a user has .Net Framework installed? I am not looking for a .Net based solution, as the query is from InnoSetup. I know from reading another post here on Stack Overflow that .Net Framework is an inplace upgrade to 4.0. Still, the Control Panel Programs and Features includes the listing. I know that probably "issuing dotNetFx45_Full_setup.exe /q" will have no bad effect if installing on a system that already has version 4.5, but I still would like to not install the upgrade if the upgrade already exists, faster and less problems.

• How do you program a windows service in C# to start an application for a user?

  Is it possible to start a program so that it is available to a user with a windows service? I have been working with the Process.Start() in C#. I can get the service to kickoff some sort of process that appears in the Task Manager list under processes. However, the program nevers appears on the screen. By default, it runs under the user name "SYSTEM". I have adjusted the "Log On" option in the service manager to match the person logged into the computer, but this does not cause a window to appear either. I feel like I am either missing a simple setting, or need to take a different direction for this.
