• How to "back track"?

  I find that I start projects and, due to my lack of experience, find that old database structures and huge blocks of code are inefficient and memory-costly. However, by the time I realize a re-design of the entire project is needed, the project has grown to such a size that it is simply too late to go back and modify the project in its current state and requires a completely new project file and the whole shebang. How should I prevent ruts such as this one, where it is too late to go back and modify the current project to fit specifications modified far down the road from the creation of the project? (Apologies in advance for confusing grammar, it's been a long day here... as you can probably tell.)

• boot issues - long delay, then "gave up waiting for root device"

  I've had this issue on and off for about two years now. I noticed it on a new (custom built) machine running 10.04 when that first came out, but then it went away until a few months ago. I've gone through a number of hard drive changes but I can't say specifically what if anything I changed hardware-wise to make it stop or start happening. I had assumed upgrading to a modern Ubuntu version would fix the issue, so I installed 12.04 beta on a spare partition last night, but it's still happening. Here's the issue. After grub loads and I select a kernel to boot, the screen goes blank save for a blinking cursor. It sits in this state for many long minutes before it finally gives up and gives me an initramfs shell with the message gave up waiting for root device (and lists the /dev/disk/by-uuid/... path it was waiting for) but no other specific diagnostic information. Now, here's the tricky part. For one, the problem is intermittent - sometimes it progresses from the blinking cursor to the Ubuntu splash boot screen in a few seconds, and once it gets that far it always continues booting fine. The really bizarre thing is that I can "force" it to "find" the root device by repeatedly pressing the space bar and hitting the machine's power button. If I tap those enough, eventually I will notice the hard drive light coming on, at which point it will always continue the boot process after a few seconds. Interestingly, if I wait slightly too long before pressing the power button (30s?), as soon as I press it I get the gave up waiting message and the initramfs shell. I've tried setting up /etc/fstab (and the grub menu.lst or whatever it's called nowadays) to use device names (e.g. /dev/sda1) instead of UUIDs, but I get the same effect just with the device name, not UUID, in the error message. I should also mention that when I boot to Windows 7, there is no issue. It boots slowly all the time just by virtue of being Windows, but it never hangs indefinitely. This would seem to indicate it's a problem in Ubuntu, not the hardware. It's pretty annoying to have to babysit the computer every time it boots. Any ideas? I'm at a loss. Not even sure how to diagnose the issue. Thanks! EDIT: Here's some dmesg output from 10.04. The 15 second gap is where it was doing nothing.   One of the problems of new OSs is power consumption. That is because power and performance requires a lot of tweaks and experience with the kernel, drivers and OS code-base on one hand, and a lot of extensive long-term test and quality assurance on the other hand. Given that Android is a rather old and established OS I saw that it has pretty good power consumption. Phoronix does this kind of comparissions but I was not able to find much about Ubuntu Touch. Does Ubuntu Touch consume less than Android, do you have data on some platforms compared?

• Reading 'Index Status' graph in Google Webmaster tools

  I recently found a bunch of old files that had been ftp'ed to a live production server by mistake on a static (html / css / js) site. I manually deleted these files, but today when checking in Google Webmaster tools i found this graph below. The 'update' marker is from 3/9/14, what i can work out is what Google is trying to tell me, are they saying that : There was a ranking update like Penguin or Panda and they penalized my site and un-indexed a load of pages which they thought were junk.. OR Is this showing that I updated the site by deleting the files on the server on 3/9/14 OR Is this something else ?

• How do I install the Intel Graphics driver in my system?

  Can someone help me out and explain or point me in the right direction on how to check video drivers and see if my video card running okay? I had 10.04 installed on my Thinkpad r61 with Compiz Manager and life was great, until the machine took water damage. I bought an ASUS (X54H) since and am trying out 12.04, but the desktop just doesn't look right. I always struggled with video driver installation. There are no proprietary drivers available in the hardware manager. When I run lspci | grep VGA: 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09) I will greatly appreciate your help. I want to use Linux more, but like I said video drivers appear to be my biggest concern. I have also tried 12.04 on my desktop PC, but again failed to configure video card, so switched back to Windows 7.

• Beggining OpenGL vs beggining DirectX and some question about the philosophical difference between them

  I'm begginning with Direct X at school, and my teacher said it was harder to begin with than OpenGL, but I read several things that in fact, Direct X was more advanced than OpenGL in terms of recent graphic cards features. Since I'm far from wanting to do top notch effects, which can already be implemented with existing engines and/or shaders, I wanted to know your opinion: Can OpenGL be considered like a more basic, KISS, hardware agnostic, graphic library to just do 3D with acceleration, and consider DirectX like a top notch, game-oriented graphic API that will always support the next-gen 3D chips ? Citation from wikipedia on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Id_Tech_5 : John Carmack mentioned in his keynote at QuakeCon 2007 that the id Tech 5 engine will not be using the DirectX 10 API. I don't want to seem like I'm minding open source because Carmack does and because he is famous, it's just that android and iPhone are out there, and Direct X doesn't seems to me to be the necessary API to know, since Windows supports OpenGL, and since the 360 is just a console among other consoles.

• How to check that I have recovered from Penguin 2.0?

  I have 3 year old website which has been hit by Penguin 2.0 in May. The website traffic dropped almost 30%. I have been working hard from last 2.5 months on the website and my website's traffic recovered in last week of August. In fact, I am receiving more traffic then ever. When I look at the stats, I find my website's search engine visibility has been improved. It is now appearing for more search queries. My website's impressions have also increased. What I am worried about is that my website is nowhere in top 5 pages for keywords having high competition and carrying the highest search volume. They are few in number but important. Should I consider my current situation as recovery or it's just the partial recovery? If it is only partial, then how come traffic is more then it was before penguin 2.0?

  Is there any evidence that linking to external quality, reputable and popular websites helps with ranking (directly or indirectly)? Is there an established correlation? Some posts on the web do claim it, but without providing any evidence. It is known that if your website links to bad neighborhood, this will harm your reputation and authority, but does the reverse actually help? And, does it matter if the website is young or old in this case? Update I have found this Moz video revealing there is a 0.04 correlation with ranking.

• HP 510 laptop doesn't suspend when I close the lid

  I have an HP 510 laptop with Ubuntu 12.04. I have all the correct settings for suspending when the lid is closed, as far as I can tell, so I think it's a problem with detecting the event. The way it "should" be detected, from what I can see, is a little hardware switch that is pushed when the lid closes. This switch manually puts off the backlight, and sends the suspend signal. All I can think is that the signal isn't being properly interpreted. Can anyone suggest a fix? Update: I tested whether the button was actually working based on the suggestion by josinalvo, and I found that in the directory /proc/acpi/button/lid/ there is no LID directory. There is, however, a C1CF folder, and in it is a state file. When using the this file instead of ID, I discovered that, no, when I close the lid, the state does not change.

• SH404SEF URLs in Joomla 1.5

  I have two modules to play with urls, the global configuration module and the sh404sef module. The global config is set to "Sef urls: YES" and "mod rewrite enabled: YES" and the sh404sef is set "url optimization: NO". My problem is, even with "Sef urls" set in the global config, my urls still don't seem to be that "user friendly" so I turn on the "Url optimization" using the sh404sef module, and I get better descriptive urls. However, the problem I inherit from doing this is that my dynamically populated chronoforms get messed up (only the chrono forms, other forms are fine); These forms are now showing up at the homepage instead of their own reserved page. Here's an example: Old form "GOOD" url: http://www.mycraftwork.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=94 New optimized "BAD" URL: http://www.mycraftwork.com/handthrown-pottery/alladin-teapot/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=94 Any help would be GREATLY appreciated! • Physics-based dynamic audio generation in games

  I wonder if it is possible to generate audio dynamically without any (!) audio assets, using pure mathematics/physics and some input values like material properties and spatial distribution of content in scene space. What I have in mind is something like a scene, with concrete floor, wooden table and glass on it. Now let's assume force pushes the glass towards the edge of table and then the glass falls onto the floor and shatters. The near-realistic glass destruction itself would be possible using voxels and good physics engine, but what about the sound the glass makes while shattering? I believe there is a way to generate that sound, because physics of sound is fairly known these days, but how computationaly costy that would be? Consumer hardware or supercomputers? Do any of you know some good resources/videos of such an experiment?

• Bluetooth mouse contstantly failes to reconnect after sleep

  It seems the bluetooth subsystem shows some bugs after the upgrade to 13.10. It was working quite happily at 13.04. The bluetooth mouse I have, simply won't connect after the computer goes into any sort of sleep and has to be re-added each and every time. Sometimes the the entire bluetooth stack has vanished alltogether. What changed with the bluetooth between these versions, that may cause this? This is a fresh install of Kubuntu I'm using (bluedevil) no an upgrade, but the same hardware as 13.04 was happy on. • How do I fool 12.10 to think it uses Unity2d in order to get the resolution my screen can use?

  On a laptop (model older) I have two screens (one built in, one external). I wish to use them both at the same time, but the settings app complains: Requested size (2944, 1080) exceeds 3D hardware limit (2048, 2048). You must either rearrange the displays so that they fit within a (2048, 2048) square or select the Ubuntu 2D session at login. The problem though, Unity 2D has been discontinued. I have forced Ubuntu to render Unity in 2D mode (with the help of echo export UNITY_LOW_GFX_MODE=1 >> .xprofile in accordance to this askubuntu post. But the error message still remains. How can one get the resolution that my computer supports? Or, how can I assure Ubuntu that it truly does use a 2D session?

• Very few visitors on Analytics: incorrect setting?

  it's quite a long time Analytics is making me crazy: I have a 2 years old website, started with Aruba (an Italian provider) and then transfered on Hostgator. It's a blog Wordpress + MyBB forum, and on both the platforms I've the Analytics code in the footer. The problem is that the stats on Analytics are simply ridiculous compared to the numbers reported by the Aruba (before) and Hostgator (then). I think that the numbers of Aruba/Hostgator are correct, simply because just the daily users connected on the forum is higher than the Analytics numbers. I know it's a really confused request, but maybe you can help me to understand what's the problem.

• How should a new programmers behave at their first job? [on hold]

  What are programmers expected to know at their first job and how old will they typically be? I'm not going to school so I'm not around other programmers, therefore I have no idea what kind of programmers they are when they first get hired. I just want to get an idea what the median programmer's knowledge looks like. Will they already have had experience with version control? Are they writing good maintainable code? And what are they expected to do do? I'm programming my own software at home and because of the complexities of it and how new I am to programming I'm sometimes throwing all the code out and starting again with a better design. Aren't new programmers going to write terribly structured software for their employer, or is someone else going to be making the decisions on how everything is laid out?

  I have a trouble with ATI driver with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. When I install ATI driver in Ubuntu 12.04 via "Additional Driver", then I can't shutdown Ubuntu, it showed blank (black) screen and my laptop still run. Sometimes, my screen like that: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U9_iygesbBM But when I install Ubuntu 10.04 and install ATI driver via "Additional Driver", it's very good and no trouble I've seen. It's sweet but 10.04 is old and is supported to 4/2013. So I want to know why Ubuntu 10.04 works good better than 12.04 with ATI driver (in my case)?
