• How to remove IIS/ASP.NET Response Headers

  I have a couple IIS/6.0 servers that security is asking me to remove a couple of response headers that are sent to client browsers on requests. They are concerned about divulging platform information through response headers. I have removed all the HTTP-HEADERS out of the IIS configuration for the website (X-Powered-By or some such header). (I personally do know that this information can be easily found out, even if it is hidden, but it isn't my call.) Headers I want to remove: Server - Microsoft-IIS/6.0 X-AspNet-Version - 2.0.50727 I also know that ASP.NET MVC also emits its own header too, if you know how to remove it also, that would be helpful. • Joomla 1.5 Media Manager sets incorrect file permissions when uploading

  Howdy all, I have a Joomla 1.5 installation running on Windows Server 2008, installed via the Web Platform Installer. When uploading images with the media manager (native uploader, not the flash bulk uploader), the files arrive on the server correctly, but are given incorrect permissions. Specifically, the IIS_IUSRS group is not given access to the file. I might be incorrect about what group/user is SUPPOSED to get access to the files, but so far, I've found that unless I give IIS_IUSRS access to the uploaded files, they won't appear on the site or in the media manager (appear as broken images). Once I give IIS_IUSRS permission to the files, they work fine. So far, all the research I've done has led me to linux specific fixes that involve either changing the umask on the server, or directly modifying the Joomla codebase to add an appropriate chmod command to the upload process, but I really don't want to modify Joomla directly. I have to believe there's a setting here somewhere that will do the job, either on the Joomla or Windows side of the equation. Any thoughts? Scott

• SPAN/Port mirroring on Linksys switch

  Hi all, I'm trying to deploy a Snort box in my LAN. I have a Linksys SRW248G4 and trying to configure Port mirroring so that Snort can listen everything on the network in promiscuous mode. So in ADMIN / Port Mirroring, I have 3 things: Source Port (e1,...e48, g1...g4) Type (Rx, Tx, Both) Target (e1...e48, g1...g4) Last time I played with it, I killed all traffic on the switch, I had to reboot it several times... so now I'm asking question before: Do I need to configure each Source Port (from 1 to 48) to forward to the single promiscuous port ? 48 rules !? • PostgreSQL won't start anymore

  Today, my PostgreSQL doesn't start anymore on my windows machine... I've tried to start the service in windows services and got the following error: Windows could not start the PostgreSQL Database Server 8.3 service on Local Computer. Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion. Then I went to the command line to manually start C:/Program Files (x86)/PostgreSQL/8.3/bin/psql.exe, and then I got this error: psql: Could not connect to server: Connection refused (0x0000274D/10061) Is the server running on host "???" and accepting TCP/IP connections on port 5432? Edit: I found this in the logs: 2011-04-22 13:13:16 CEST LOG: could not receive data from client: No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it. 2011-04-22 13:13:16 CEST LOG: unexpected EOF on client connection

• IE8 on Win7 - file download results in "C:\ location not accessible."

  Ok, an odd problem. For one user on a Win7 x64 system, attempting to download a file with Internet Explorer 8 results in a error "C:\ location not accessible. Access is denied." even though the target location is not on the C:\ drive. No other users have the problem and no other browsers do. The user does not remember deleting any folders recently, and it looks liek no new software has been installed. A checkdisk comes up clean. Any ideas? Ken

• Simple, manageable DNS on EC2?

  I'm working on a large network of servers sitting on EC2, and need a way for the servers to know about each other's locations in the cloud. I thought the simplest way would be to use DNS, because if I replace the EC2 instance, I simply update the DNS record, and the rest of the servers will know about it (with names like users.db.mysoft.com, routing.mysoft.com, cluster1.memcached.mysoft.com). I'm considering setting up a master DNS server on a micro/small instance to accommodate this. I'd preferably need something that's as simple as a key-value store (hostname - IP) into which the platform could remotely add/remove entries. Can I do this with BIND? Or is there a better solution?

• Here's what I want... what do I tell my IT guy I need?

  I work in the graphics department for a real estate brokerage, and we deal with a lot of photos. Agents take the photos, upload them to me, I touch up and standardize the photos, then I add them to an in-house server for future use by the graphics dept. I'd like to make the "sanitized" photo files available to the agents to use when they want, but I don't want the agents poking around the graphics department's files (things get misplaced, renamed and messed up in a hurry). What would be perfect is if we could create a read-only "mirror" (correct term?) of that server that could be accessed by the agents as needed, but which wouldn't feed back into our "sanitized" file system. What do I tell the office IT guy I need (platform-agnostically, because I don't know what he's running)? I never get to see him face-to-face, so I've got to word this as carefully and explicitly as possible. Thoughts? Thanks in advance for your feedback

Having Time Machine running on Leopard is like a warm, fuzzy blanket of comfort that I never got with RAID, rsync, or SyncToy on Windows. I'm not asking the community what the "best" backup software for Windows is, but instead: Is there any true Time Machine clone for Windows, one that includes as many of the following as possible: Completely transparent, "set-it-and-forget-it" backup Incremental backups (changes only) for every hour for a day, every day for a month, and every week until the backup disk is full Ability to rebuild from this backup disk in case of main drive meltdown (the backup doesn't have to be bootable; neither are Time Machine disks) Extremely easy to use UI (target user == wife). • Re-Initialize RAID-0 in software after card failure

  I'm working on a Friend's WD MyBook "1TB" HDD that is not mounting. When I got in to it, I discovered that it is really 2 500GB HDD's set up as RAID-0. It appears that the drives themselves are fine, but that the logic board has failed. My questions is this: can I re-initialize the RAID-0 using software RAID so that I can recover the data to another drive? If so, how and which software RAID would be best (Preferably open source. any platform OK).

• How to copy files pointed to (not the shortcut files themselves)

  I have a folder containing shortcuts that point to files that are located in various directories and drives. I would like to copy the files pointed to (NOT the shortcut files themselves) to a single destination folder. Is there a way in windows (XP, Vista, 7), file manager, or some utility I can use to do this? I've heard you can do this with various multi-step custom scripts. However, I've heard rumors there is a one click way to do this without having to fabricate a custom script each time, where regardless where the shortcuts point to, I can select the group of shortcuts and do a copy operation that will grab the files they point to. Then, I can paste or otherwise put the actual files (not shortcuts) into one directory. It would be very time consuming to manually find each file pointed to by a shortcut and one by one copy them to the target folder. Note that I've seen this question asked before on the internet but haven't seen a good answer.

• Windows HTTP proxy client to pass service requests to VPN

  I've got access to a network via CheckPoint VPN (Windows client). Problem is, I have a linux box that needs to talk to its web services and the target web servers are inside the VPN. So far, we have been unable to connect linux to the VPN (and I'm not trying to solve that problem at the moment). I'm wondering if (temporarily) I can setup a proxy server on a Windows (XP) box to shuttle HTTP requests back and forth? If so, what'd be a good application to do this? (hopefully free/open-source) TIA

• Can't connect to VPN in Windows XP mode

  I have Windows 7 x32 installed on my laptop. I have also Windows XP mode installed. My setup is that my work-remote programs are in Windows XP mode because my VPN installer in Windows XP only. Lately, I have been having troubles getting on / logging in to VPN. I can access the internet in WinXP mode but When I ping the IP address of the target IP of my VPN network (or even just Google.com), I always get a 'Request Timeout'. However, when I ping the same IP address in command prompt in Windows 7, I get 100% data sent. Is there anything I need to adjust? Before, I have been able to connect instantly. Now, it's like trial and error, or I will have to wait for hours just to be able to enter logon credentials in Cisco VPN dialer. NAT is my network adapter in XP mode.

• Physically moving a hard drive from older iMac (c2d) to new iMac (i7) ?

  Instead of my usual habit of using superduper to mirror my drive to a new computer, I just physically moved the hard drive from an older iMac to a new one. But... it now doesn't boot, getting stuck at the apple logo screen. Since the hard drive that came with the new iMac works well, and my old drive works well when I return it to the older iMac, I conclude that there is some problem at the system/kernel level due to the different hardware. In the past I did similar things (e.g. starting a C2D machine from a Core Duo in target disk mode), so perhaps the change in architecture to the i5/i7 is too problematic? The main point: do you know of any way to get the system to rebuild for itself the proper versions of the system components when booting? Are there certain directories that I can safely delete to make that happen? Thanks

• basic picture editing software for Mac OS X

  I am using a MacBook Pro running Mac OS X 10.5. I am new to this development environment, and previously worked on Windows. I want to do very basic image editing, like cut a portion of an image, add some text label to the image, circle some part of the image, etc. I am downloading acornfree from this Url, but when executing acornfree, it said the Mac OS I am using is not supported. • SYN flooding still a threat to servers?

  Well recently I've been reading about different Denial of Service methods. One method that kind of stuck out was SYN flooding. I'm a member of some not-so-nice forums, and someone was selling a python script that would DoS a server using SYN packets with a spoofed IP address. However, if you sent a SYN packet to a server, with a spoofed IP address, the target server would return the SYN/ACK packet to the host that was spoofed. In which case, wouldn't the spoofed host return an RST packet, thus negating the 75 second long-wait, and ultimately failing in its attempt to DoS the server?

• MSDeploy - possible to call setAcl on multiple destinations in one go?

  I'm building a nice little continuous integration environment for our development team, based on TeamCity. It's working rather nicely, as it can build a mix of .NET and PHP projects, and push them to our internal and external platforms. I'm primarily using MsDeploy to push everything to the internal platform, as that's all IIS based. However, there's a number of builds where I need to set directory permissions on the destination directory. I can use the setAcl operator just fine, but that only seems to take a single destination as an argument. Therefore, if I need to alter the permissions on 5 destination directories, I need to call MsDeploy 5 times, which seems a lot of overhead. Is there a sensible way around this? Reading the documentation, I don't think MsDeploy takes more than a single argument for the setAcl operator, but could be wrong. Is there a better way for a build server to set multiple directory permissions in one go?

• Corporate IM with video that actually works, suggestions?

  Hi. Does anyone here have a suggestion for a cross-platform IM solution wich will work with voip/video on both Windows (XP and 7) and Mac OS X from 10.4 and upwards? Right now were in a kind of mixed enviroment, with some Mac users using iChat server since they need video support (conference across several offices over VPN), but it wont't work on windows clients. The rest of us are happily using Openfire+Spark, but there's no VoIP or video avaible from what i've found, unless you want to add in several 3rd party software (like red5 and asterisk). Requirements: As said before; must work on both Windows and Mac Internal server (no Skype etc) File transfer between platforms SSO (Single Sign-On) via Active Directory authentication Some sort of screen sharing would be a plus, like switching over to a screen capture (powerpoint, software training etc) We can afford to buy software if that's needed to get this working without any hiccups across platforms. Pre-thanks to anyone who gives suggestions.

  I am working on an MVC project in Visual Studio 2010 with .NET Framework 4.0 + MVC2 and everything works if I set the target framework to .NET 4.0. However, my host does not offer .NET 4.0 in order to deploy the site I need to get it working on .NET 3.5. I tried converting it to ASP.NET 3.5 and everything builds just fine except now when I try to load the homepage, I get a 404 Error saying: The resource cannot be found. Description: HTTP 404. The resource you are looking for (or one of its dependencies) could have been removed, had its name changed, or is temporarily unavailable. • How do I setup unison to sync a folder one way

  I have a 1tb NAS that has a 1tb usb external hard attached I have prepared the file system on the usb disk and mounted it I want to 100% sync my data from my nas to the usb disk - but I want it to be incremental and only have the NAS as the 'master' - eg if a file changes on the usb external hard drive I want it to ignore this change as its not the live version (not that I think the files will change on the usb disk but im paranoid the live could get overwritten) Also if a file gets deleted on live I want to retain the deleted file on the usb disk Can unison sync one-way and achive the above for me? if so with simply unison sorce/ target/ Work? • Windows 7 Image Restore with a smaller hard drive

  I have a 500 GB drive that I have made a system image of. I would like to move that to a 250 GB drive (because it is a Solid State drive). I have made a Windows 7 Backup Image of my 500 GB drive. I am currently only using 163 GB of that drive. Can I just restore that to the target drive or will the restore be expecting a 500 GB drive? If it is expecting it I can shrink my partition to less that 250 and backup again. But I would rather not if that is not needed. Will the restore realize that it is not using all the space and just take what it needs?
