• Bone creation in XNA Content Pipeline

  I'm trying to manually create a ModelContent instance that includes custom Bone data in a custom ContentProcessor in the XNA Content Pipeline. I can't seem to create or assign manually created bone data due to either private constructors or read-only collections (at every turn). The code I have right now that creates a single triangle ModelContent that I'd like to create a bone for is: MeshContent mc = new MeshContent(); mc.Positions.Add(new Vector3(-10, 0, 0)); mc.Positions.Add(new Vector3(0, 10, 0)); mc.Positions.Add(new Vector3(10, 0, 0)); GeometryContent gc = new GeometryContent(); gc.Indices.AddRange(new int[] { 0, 1, 2 }); gc.Vertices.AddRange(new int[] { 0, 1, 2 }); mc.Geometry.Add(gc); // Create normals MeshHelper.CalculateNormals(mc, true); // finally, convert it to a model ModelContent model = context.Convert<MeshContent, ModelContent>(mc, "ModelProcessor"); The documentation on XNA is amazingly sparse. I've been referencing the class diagrams created by DigitalRune and Sean Hargreaves blog, but I haven't found anything on creating bone content. Once the ModelContent is created, it's not possible to add bones because the Bones collection is read-only. And it seems the only way to create the ModelContent instance is to call the standard ModelProcessor via ContentProcessorContext.Convert. So it's a bit of a catch-22. The BoneContent class has a constructor but no methods except those inherited from NodeContent... though now (true to form) maybe I've realized the solution by asking the question. Should I create a root NodeContent with two children: one MeshContent and one BoneContent as the root of my skeleton; then pass the root NodeContent to ContentProcessorContext.Convert? Off to try that now...

• Monogame - Shader parameters missing

  I am currently working on a simple game that I am building in Windows 8 using MonoGame (develop3d). I am using some shader code from a tutorial (made by Charles Humphrey) and having an issue populating a 'texture' parameter. I'm not well versed writing shaders, so this might be caused by a more obvious problem. I have debugged through MonoGame's Content processor to see how this shader is being parsed, all the non 'texture' parameters are there and look to be loading correctly. • 2D Side Scrolling game and "walk over ground" collision detection

  The question is not hard, I'm writing a game engine for 2D side scrolling games, however I'm thinking to my 2D side scrolling game and I always come up with the problem of "how should I do collision with the ground". I think I couldn't handle the collision with ground (ground for me is "where the player walk", so something heavily used) in a per-pixel way, and I can't even do it with simple shape comparison (because the ground can be tilted), so what's the correct way? I'know what tiles are and i've read about it, but how much should be big each tile to not appear like a stairs?Are there any other approach? I watched this game and is very nice how he walks on ground: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DmSAQwbbig8&feature=player_embedded If there are "platforms" in mid air, how should I handle them?I can walk over them but I can't pass "inside". • Securing ClickOnce hosted with Amazon S3 Storage

  Well, since my post on hosting ClickOnce with Amazon S3 Storage, I've received quite a few emails asking how to secure the deployment. At the time of this post I regret to say that there is no way to secure your ClickOnce deployment hosted with Amazon S3. The S3 storage is secured by ACL meaning that a username and password will have to be provided before access. The Amazon CloudFront, which sits on top of S3, allows you to apply security settings to your CloudFront distribution by Applying an encryption to the URL. Restricting by IP. The problem with the CloudFront is that the encryption of the URL is mandatory. ClickOnce does not provide a way to pass the "Amazon Public Key" to the CloudFront URL (you probably can if you start editing the XML and HTML files ClickOnce generate but that defeats the porpose of ClickOnce all together). What would be nice is if Amazon can allow users to restrict by IP addresses or IP Blocks. I'd sent them an email and received a response that this is something they are looking into...I won't hold my breadth though. Alternative I suggest you look at Rack Space Cloud hosting http://www.rackspacecloud.com they have very competitive pricing and recently started hosting Windows Virtual Servers. What you can do is rent a virtual server, setup IIS to host your ClickOnce applications. You can then use IIS security setting to restrict what IP/Blocks can access your ClickOnce payloads. Note: You don't really need Windows Server to host ClickOnce. Any web server can do. If you are familiar with Linux you can run that VM with rackspace for half the price of Windows. • Tip 13 : Kill a process using C#, from local to remote

  1. My first choice is always to try System.Diagnostics to kill a process 2. The first choice works very well in killing local processes. I thought the first choice should work for killing remote process too because process.kill() method is overloaded with second argument of machine name. I pass process name plus remote machine name and call the process.kill() method 3. Unfortunately, it gives me error message of "Feature is not supported for remote machines.". Apparently, you can query but not kill a remote process using Process class in System.Diagnostics. The MSDN library document explicitly states that about Process class: Provides access to local and remote processes and enables you to start and stop local system processes. 4. I try my second choice: using System.Management to kill a process running on a remote machine. Make sure add references to System.Management.dll and System.Management.Instrumentation.dll 5. The second choice works very well in killing a remote process. Just need to make sure the account running your program must be configured to have permission to kill a process running on the remote machine.

  Printer MP6150 driver installed itself upon plugging in the printer. Printer is recognized (lsusb shows it) but does not mount. If the printer is recognized, the driver must be working (or?), but something is blocking the system from mounting the printer.   Been doing some work in MonoDroid and found that I needed to pass a user entered value from on Activity to another Activity in MonoDroid.  Here's how I did it. In my sending Activity, I need to take some user user entered data and send it to my second activity.  Here is the code:             string UserId = Convert.ToString(et.Text);            if (!String.IsNullOrEmpty(UserId))            {                Intent i = new Intent();                i.SetClass(this, typeof(CustomList));                i.AddFlags(ActivityFlags.NewTask);                i.PutExtra("TwitterId", UserId);                StartActivity(i);            }  In this code, I have called .PutExtra and  passed it with a key.  In this case, I am passing a Twitter id.  In the code that is receiving the data, the code to retrieve the Twitter id is: string twitterId = Intent.GetStringExtra("TwitterId"); The call to GetStringExtra() returns the value passed on the key.

• Grub options are not visible on booting on Samsung ATIV Book 9 Lite running Ubuntu 14.04

  I've managed to install Ubuntu 14.04 on my new Samsung ATIV Book 9 Lite ultrabook. After updating some configuratiosn in the UEFI installation was very easy. The only questions and issue I believe I'm still experience is when booting. I believe when the laptop would be displaying the grub boot options I see the following. There is a black screen with a purple border of 10px around the screen. I'd like to know how I can update my system so that I see the grub boot manager. The reason for this is that my shared hosting company a2hosting has a specific configuration (symfony,mysql,git) that I don't want to spend time duplicating when I can just ssh and develop remotely or through netbeans remote editing features. My question is how can I use git to separate my site into three areas: live, staging and dev.   An interesting question from one of the MVVM Light users today: Is there an MVVM-friendly way to get a DataGrid’s SelectedItems into the ViewModel? The issue there is as old as the DataGrid (that’s not very old but still): SelectedItem (singular) is a DependencyProperty and can be databound to a property in the ViewModel. SelectedItems (plural) is not a DependencyProperty. Thankfully the answer is very simple: Use EventToCommand to call a Command in the ViewModel, and pass the SelectedItems collection as parameter. • high performance with xen, vmware or virtualbox

  I was wondering which is the best method to go about if I want to play win based games. I do not want to go with the dual boot method as this will cost me time to restart, login and run a os to do my work or pass the time, and some of my apps rely on win and my graphics to run. for example Daz3d, Photoshop, Flash etc. Now I read about HVM(hardware virtual machines) and then I know about the 3D virtualisation of VMware and VirtualBox. How ever the 2 later virtualise the 3D not using the full power of the GPU. So this option wont perform perfect for latest games like D3. I was wondering if anyone have experience in HVM(like xen if i am not mistaken) and tried something similar to access the full power of the GPU and successfully run newer games and other products relying on the GPU? Will be the first time setting up a HVM, no experience in this so don't know what to expect. This will help a lot as I do not want to revert back to win or as mentioned do dual boot.

  Recently, one of my colleagues was experimenting with Reporting Server on DAX 2009, whenever he used to view a report in SQL Server Reporting Manager he was welcomed with an error: “Error during processing Ax_CompanyName report parameter. (rsReportParameterProcessingError)” The Event Log had the following entry: Dynamics Adapter LogonAs failed. Microsoft.Dynamics.Framework.BusinessConnector.Session.Exceptions.FatalSessionException at Microsoft.Dynamics.Framework.BusinessConnector.Session.DynamicsSession.HandleException(Stringmessage, Exception exception, HandleExceptionCallback callback) We later found out that this was due to incorrect Business Connector account, with my past experience I noticed this as a very common mistake people make during EP and Reporting Installations. Remember that the reports need to connect to the Dynamics Ax server to run the AxQueries., which needs to pass through the .NET Business Connector. To ensure everything works fine please note the following settings: 1) Your Report Server Service Account should be same as .NET Business Connector proxy account. 2) Ensure on the server which has Reporting Services installed, the client configuration utility for Business Connector points to correct proxy account. 3) And finally, the AX instance you are connecting to has Service account specified for .NET business connector. (administration –> Service accounts –> .NET Business Connector) These simple checkpoints can help in almost most of the Business Connector related  errors, which I believe is mostly due to incorrect configuration settings.   The SaaS is for real estate companies, and they can pay a monthly fee that will offer them 1000 publications but they can also consume additional publications or other services that will appear on their bill as extras. On registration the user can choose one of the 5 available plans that the only difference will be the quantity of publications their plan allows them to make. But they can pass that limit if they wish, and additional payment will be required on the next bill. A publication means: Publishing a property during one day, for 1 whole month would be: 30 publications. And 5 properties during one day would be 5 publications. So basically the user can: Make publications (already paid in the monthly fee, extra payment only if it passes the limit) Highlight that publication (extra payment) Publish on other websites or printed catalogues (extra payment) Doubts: How to handle modifications in pricing plans? Let's say quantities change, or you want to offer some free stuff. How to handle unpaid invoices? I mean, freeze the service until the payment has been done and then resume it. When to make the invoices? The idea is to make one invoice for the monthly fee and a second invoice for the extra services that were consumed. What payment methods to use? The choosen now is by bank account, and mobile phone validation with a SMS. If user doesn't pay we call that phone and ask for payment. Any examples on billing online services will be welcome! • Questioning pythonic type checking

  I've seen countless times the following approach suggested for "taking in a collection of objects and doing X if X is a Y and ignoring the object otherwise" def quackAllDucks(ducks): for duck in ducks: try: duck.quack("QUACK") except AttributeError: #Not a duck, can't quack, don't worry about it pass The alternative implementation below always gets flak for the performance hit caused by type checking def quackAllDucks(ducks): for duck in ducks: if hasattr(duck,"quack"): duck.quack("QUACK") However, it seems to me that in 99% of scenarios you would want to use the second solution because of the following: If the user gets the parameters wrong then they will not be treated like a duck and there will be no indication. A lot of time will be wasted debugging why there is no quacking going on until the user finally realizes his silly mistake. The second solution would throw a stack trace as soon the user tried to quack. If the user has any bugs in their quack() method which cause an AttributeError then those bugs will be silently swallowed. Once again time will be wasted digging for the bug when the second solution would simply give a stack trace showing the immediate issue. In fact, it seems to me that the only time you would ever want to use the first method is when: The block of code in question is in an extremely performance critical section of your application. Following the principal of "avoid premature optimization" you would only realize this of course, after you had implemented the safer approach and found it to be a bottleneck. There are many types of quacking objects out there and you are only interested in quacking objects that quack with a very specific set of arguments (this seems to be a very rare case to me). Given this, why is it that so many people prefer the first approach over the second approach? What is it that I am missing? Also, I realize there are other solutions (such as using abcs) but these are the two solutions I seem to see most often for the basic case.

• Ubuntu 12.04 LTS loops the login screen unless you login as Guest

  I am running a VMWare Player with a Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Precise Pangloin as Guest on my Windows 7. Sometimes I get the shutdown blue screen error in Windows, this time it happened when I was running the Player. When I restarted everything Ubuntu gave the not so unfamiliar in this forum Login Loop in adminstrator login. I login and there's this black screen where I can only read: "piix4...smbus:0.0.0.07.3 Host Smbus controller not enabled" . When I go to the Prompt in root mode it fails to update and only upgraded, specially some plugins ( I think graphic plugins) which also appear in one an error message after quitting the prompt, but they´are successfully installed. They are not the error message. After that I have been working with the Fail/safe Mode recovery panel. When I try to update via Root I get errors like this: W:failed to fetch http://extras.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/precise/release.gpg could not resolve 'extras/ubuntu.com There are 8 more like this referring to areas like: -archive/canonical.com -ppa.Launchpad.net -security.Ubuntu.com -Us.archive.ubuntu.com - release.gpg precise-updates/release.gpg precise_backport/release.gpg Final Message: some index files failed to download.....they have been ignored or old files are used. The black screens most of the time pass by too fast for me to pick up any information. But in general I think I have done everything I was able to in the recovery panel including updating network and graphic packages and recovering filesystem packages and the basic stuff ( I am a beginner regarding Linux ) in the root prompt. Now I am stuck in this screen with graphic options: - Run in low-graphics mode just for one session - Reconfigure Graphics - Troubleshoot the error - Exit to console login I am trying to choose to reconfigure graphics but the mouse disappears in the virtual machine screen and sometimes when options change ity´s only the first and last option. ut this happens from the blue without messages. This particular option menu is in the regular GUI style against a black screen in Terminal style. Really strange. Thanx in advance, all is welcome and appreciated.

• How to set Guake as preferred terminal emulator for "Run in Terminal"?

  I've recently installed Guake and like it a lot. I'd like to set it as my preferred terminal application. That is, when I right-click on a bash script file, click "Open", and choose "Run in Terminal", I want it to open in a new Guake tab. I'm not sure where to set Guake as the preferred app for "Run in Terminal". And I'm guessing that I might need the command to be something like guake --new-tab=new --execute-command="COMMANDHERE", so how do I pass that parameter? Ideally, I'd like a terminal invocation to open a new Guake tab, unless there is already one available. (Difficult to tell, what id there's already a command running in the existing tab?) Failing that, just opening a new Guake tab is ok. Also, is there an option to keep Guake hidden when this happens? Already tried: Based on How can I set default terminal used? I have already tried: gconftool --type string --set /desktop/gnome/applications/terminal/exec guake - this made Guake appear when I type Ctrl-Alt-T. setting x-terminal-emulator to \usr\bin\guake in Alternatives Configurator - this made no difference (having already made the previous change).

• Recent resources on Entity Framework 4

  I just posted on the bits you need to install to explore all the features of Entity Framework 4 with the Visual Studio 2010 RC. I’ve also had a quick look (March 12th 2010) to see what new resources are out there on EF4. They appear a little thin on the ground – but there are some gems. The following all caught my attention: Julie Lerman has published 2 How-to-videos on EF4 on pluralsight.com. You need to create a free guest pass to watch them. Getting Started with Entity Framework 4.0 – Session given at Cairo CodeCamp 2010 . This includes ppt and demos. Entity Framework 4 providers – read through the comments What’s new with Entity Framework in Visual Studio 2010 RC Extending the design surface of EF4 using the Extension Starter Kit Persistence Ignorance and EF4 on geekSpeak on channel 9 (poor audio IMHO – I gave up) First of a series of posts on EF4 How to stop your dba having a heart attack with EF4 from Simon Sabin in the UK. This includes ppt and demos. And the biggy. You no longer have to depend on SQL Profiler to keep an eye on the generated SQL. There is now a commercial profiler for Entity Framework.  I am yet to try it – but I listened to a .NET rocks podcast which made it sound great. It is “hidden” in a session on DSLs in Boo –> Oren Eini on creating DSLs in Boo. This is a much richer experience than you would get from SQL Profiler – matching the SQL to the .NET code. And finally a momentous #fail to … drum roll… the Visual Studio 2010 and .NET Framework 4 Training Kit Feb release. This just contains one ppt on EF4 – and it is not even a good one. Real shame. P.S. • Best practice for setting Effect parameters in XNA

  I want to ask if there is a best practice for setting Effect parameters in XNA. Or in other words, what exactly happens when I call pass.Apply(). I can imagine multiple scenarios: Each time Apply is called, all effect parameters are transferred to the GPU and therefor it has no real influence how often I set a parameter. Each time Apply is called, only the parameters that got reset are transferred. So caching Set-operations that don't actually set a new value should be avoided. Each time Apply is called, only the parameters that got changed are transferred. So caching Set-operations is useless. This whole questions is bootless because no one of the mentions ways has any noteworthy impact on game performance. So the final question: Is it useful to implement some caching of set operation like: private Matrix _world; public Matrix World { get{ return _world; } set { if (value == world) return; _effect.Parameters["xWorld"].SetValue(value); _world = value; } } Thanking you in anticipation.

The overall premise and style of game play for AceCypher is simple. You move individual rows (left, right) or columns (up, down) one space at a time in order to shift the positions of numbers on the game board through ’round-a-bout’ trading. The goal is to make the four numbers in the red square match the code shown in the upper right corner (including positions). Sounds simple so far, right? But the challenge comes from the random boards you will be given to work with…some will not be too hard to solve while others will tax your brain (and patience!) quite well.
