How would I make a Visual Basic application talk to a web server? Someone will press something on the site and I want the application to display the information that the web site passes along to it.
Hi, I'm trying to create a table type in sql server 2005.
Here is what my code looks like:
CREATE TYPE NameResourceType AS TABLE
(
ID int,
[Value] Varchar(256)
)
GO
I receive the following error:
Incorrect syntax near the keyword 'AS'.
A site that I was working is resolving to a staging server through google. I've removed all the information. How long does it take for google to update the information so that it does not show up. is there anyone that I can contact to move this along?
I need to create database for SQL Server, what kind of naming convention I sohuld use?
1) Table names could be : customer, Customer, CUSTOMER
2) Field names could be : customer_id, CustomerId, CustomerID, CUSTOMER_ID, customerid, CUSTOMERID and so on...
Is there any official suggestion for naming conventions or what is msot common way to name tables and fields?
I'm considering using PostgreSQL with a .Net web app. Basically 3 reasons:
Mature Geo Queries
Small footprint + Linux
Price
I'm wondering a bit about tools though, SQL Server Profiler and query plans and performance monitors have been helpful. How is this world with Postgres? Some other things I should consider?
Edit: Will most likely use NHibernate as ORM
Hello All - I have a task to import/transform and extract zipped binary files that contain both text data as well as embeded binary data. Within the data is data that is relational in nature and needs to be processed into a defined database structure. Currently I have a C# single threaded app that essentially grabs all the files from the directory (currently there is 13K files of varying sizes) and extracts the data on a single thread line by line inserts to the database. As you could imagine this is a very slow process and unacceptable. There are several different parsing routines used depending on the header record in the file. There are potentially upto a million rows per file when all the data is extracted to the row level of detail. Follow on task is to parse those rows into their appropriate tables based on is content. i.e. the textual content has to be parsed further into "buckets" of like data in the database. That about sums up the big picture. Now for the problem task list.
How do i iterate through a packet of data using SSIS? In the app the file is decompressed and then is parsed using streams data type and byte arrays and is routed to the required parsing routine based on the header data of each packet. There is bit swapping involved as well. Should i wrap up the app code into a script task(s) and let it do the custom processing? The data is seperated by year and the sql server tables is partitioned by year as well. I need to be able to "catch" bad file data as well and process by hand most likely.
Should i simply load the zipped file to sql as a blob and parse the file with T-SQL? Would that be multi threaded if done that way? Not sure how to do the parsing in tsql that is involved here. Which do you think would be faster?
Potentially the data that is currently processed via files could come to us via a socket. Can SSIS collect that data in real time? How would i go about setting that up?
Processing these new files from the directorys will become a daily task.
I can manage the data once i get it to sql server. Getting it there in a timely fashion seems to be the long pole in the tent for me. I would appreciate any comments or suggestions from the group.

I am using the performance dashboard with our SQL Server 2005 databases and it lists what it considers to be missing indexes. But some of those indexes DO exist! They are not disabled, and they are defined exactly as the dashboard says they should be. Why are they reported as missing?
Why does this quite simple xquery takes 10min to execute in sql server (the 2mb xml document stored in one column) compared to 14 seconds when using oxygen/file based querying?
SELECT model.query('declare default element namespace "http://www.sbml.org/sbml/level2";
for $all_species in //species, $all_reactions in //reaction
where data($all_species/@compartment)="plasma_membrane" and $all_reactions/listOfReactants/speciesReference/@species=$all_species/@id
return <result>{data($all_species/@id)}</result>') from sbml;
I want to convert a string like this:
'10/15/2008 10:06:32 PM'
into the equivalent DATETIME value in Sql Server.
In Oracle, I would say this:
TO_DATE('10/15/2008 10:06:32 PM','MM/DD/YYYY HH:MI:SS AM')
This question implies that I must parse the string into one of the standard formats, and then convert using one of those codes. That seems ludicrous for such a mundane operation. Is there an easier way?
Hi, how do I add a CC mail address in PHPMailer running on a Linux server?
AddCC method works on Windows: http://phpmailer.worxware.com/index.php?pg=methods
Thank you.
how to insert rows in a excel sheet into Sql server 2005 or oracle ?

The project I am working on is a client/server architecture. In a LAN environment, I want the client's to be able to automatically determine the server's address. I want to avoid having to manually configure each client with the ip address of the server. What is the best way to do this? Some alternatives I have thought about doing are:
The server could listen for
broadcast packets from the clients.
The message from the client would be
a request for the IP address of the
server. The server would respond with its address.
The machine running my project's server could also have a
bind server running. The LAN's router could
be configured to use it as one of its
DNS servers.
I think I saw that
there is a bind library. Does that
mean I can build the bind service
into my server so that bind doesn't
have to be installed on the server?
Any other ideas? What have you done in the past? What are the pros/cons of these approaches and others that might be suggested?
Thanks for your help!
I need to write an user menu for an embedded device (mips linux). The menu has to be accessible from network (web page - AJAX?) and it has to be able to read/write hardware settings. What would be the easiest way to implement such an app/server? Where do I start?
PS: c/c++ preferred.
PS 2: I have limited resources
Hi all,
I would like to know how to measure/know that one's stored procedure is optimum in performance. That stored procedure can be inserting/deleting/updating or manipulating data in that procedure. Please describe the way/approach how to know performance in SQL Server.
Thanks in advance!

I am using Castle ActiveRecord as my ORM. When I try to store unicode strings, I get question marks instead.
Saving unicode strings worked perfectly when I was using mysql, but when I recently switch to SQL Server it broke. How should I go about fixing this?
Is it possible to write a plugin or a form for SQL Server Enterprise Manager version 8? I'm doing some simple queries all the time to admin the databases. So wondering if I could write something for it.
I know there are third-party tools available but why must I go to another vendor for something as trivial as auto-formatting my SQL statements?
What prevents MS to provide a SQL formatting tool in SQL Server Management Studio? What's the catch?
And btw, is there a FREE tool available that would plug into SSMS?
Hi,
I have several developers which connect to production and test servers where we have DBs with similar names and structures. In SSMS there are info related to the connection, but sometimes are not properly displayed and/or hidden.
I know that it is possible to customize the status bar of each connection in SSMS, but how do you ensure that your developer is connecting to the right server before he runs a query? Is there any way to handle this?
THANKS!
How can i update bulk data in sql server 2005 by sending the data in XML form ?
i am able to insert bulk data into the table, but i am not getting idea to update the data.
I have an application which intensively uses DB (SQL Server).
As it must have high performance I would like to know the fastest way to insert record into DB.Fastest from the standpoint of execution time.
What should I use ?
As I know the fastest way is to create stored procedure and to call it from code (ADO.NET).
Please let me know is there any better way or may be there are is some other practices to increase performance.
Hi, im trying to connect to a remote sql express server using win. authentication.

I'm doing a little digging and looking for a explanation on how SQL server evaluates MIN(Varchar).
I found this remark in BOL: MIN finds the lowest value in the collating sequence defined in the underlying database
So if I have a table that has one row with the following values:
Data
AA
AB
AC
Doing a SELECT MIN(DATA) would return back AA. I just want to understand the why behind this and understand the BOL a little better.
Thanks!
