• Using the groupby method in Python, example included

  Trying to work with groupby so that I can group together files that were created on the same day. When I say same day in this case, I mean the dd part in mm/dd/yyyy. So if a file was created on March 1 and April 1, they should be grouped together because the "1" matches. But then I'll see multiple groups with the same day. Meaning I might have 4 files grouped that were created on the 17th. Later on I'll see another unique set of 2 files that are also created on the 17th. Where am I going wrong?

• python: nonblocking subprocess, check stdout

  Ok so the problem I'm trying to solve is this: I need to run a program with some flags set, check on its progress and report back to a server. So I need my script to avoid blocking while the program executes, but I also need to be able to read the output. Unfortunately, I don't think any of the methods available from Popen will read the output without blocking. • Core Data + Core Animation/CALayer together??

  I am making an Cocoa app with custom interfaces. So far I have implemented one version of the app using CALayer doing the rendering, which has been great given the hierarchical structure of CALayers, and its [hitTest:] function for handling mouse events. In this early version, the model of the app are my custom classes. However, as the program grows I feel the urge of using Core Data for the model, not just for the ease of binding/undo management, but also want to try out the new technology. My method so far: In Core Data: creating a Block entity, with attributes xPos, yPos, width, height...etc. Then, creating a BlockView : CALayer class for drawing, which uses methods such as self.position.x = [self valueForKey:@"xPos"] to fetch the values from the model. In this case, every BlockView object has to also keep a local copy of xPos, which is NOT good. Do any of you guys have better suggestions? Edit: This app is a information visualization tool. So the positions, dimensions of the blocks are important, and should be persisted for later analysis.

• Niewbie OutOfMemory problem

  So I am trying to create a producer/consumer type scala app. The LoopControl just sends a message to the MessageReceiver continoually. The MessageReceiver then delegates work to the MessageCreatorActor (whose work is to check a map for an object, and if not found create one and start it up). Each MessageActor created by this MessageCreatorActor is associated with an Id. Eventually this is where I want to do business logic. But I run out of memory after 15 minutes. • Ruby on Rails: How to sanitize a string for SQL when not using find and other built-in methods?

  I'm trying to sanitize a string that involves user input without having to resort to manually crafting my own possibly buggy regex if possible. There are a number of methods in Rails that can allow you to enter in native SQL commands, how do people escape user input for those? The question I'm asking is a broad one, but in my particular case, I'm working with a column in my Postgres database that Rails does not natively understand as far as I know, the tsvector, which holds plain text search information. Rails is able to write and read from it as if it's a string, however, unlike a string, it doesn't seem to be automatically escaping it when I do things like vector= inside the model. For example, when I do model.name='::', where name is a string, it works fine. When I do model.vector='::' it errors out: ActiveRecord::StatementInvalid: PGError: ERROR: syntax error in tsvector: "::" "vectors" = E'::' WHERE "id" = 1 This seems to be a problem caused by lack of escaping of the semicolons, and I can manually set the vector='\:\:' fine. I also had the bright idea, maybe I can just call something like: ActiveRecord::Base.connection.execute "UPDATE medias SET vectors = ? WHERE id = 1", "::" However, this syntax doesn't work, because the raw SQL commands don't have access to find's method of escaping and inputting strings by using the ? mark. This strikes me as the same problem as calling connection.execute with any type of user input, as it all boils down to sanitizing the strings, but I can't seem to find any way to manually call Rails' SQL string sanitization methods. Can anyone provide any advice?

• Should this even be a has_many :through association?

  A Post belongs_to a User, and a User has_many Posts. A Post also belongs_to a Topic, and a Topic has_many Posts. class User < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :posts end class Topic < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :posts end class Post < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :user belongs_to :topic end Well, that's pretty simple and very easy to set up, but when I display a Topic, I not only want all of the Posts for that Topic, but also the user_name and the user_photo of the User that made that Post. However, those attributes are stored in the User model and not tied to the Topic. So how would I go about setting that up? Maybe it can already be called since the Post model has two foreign keys, one for the User and one for the Topic? Or, maybe this is some sort of "one-way" has_many through assiociation. Like the Post would be the join model, and a Topic would has_many :users, :through = :posts. But the reverse of this is not true. Like a User does NOT has_many :topics. So would this even need to be has_many :though association? I guess I'm just a little confused on what the controller would look like to call both the Post and the User of that Post for a give Topic. Edit: Seriously, thank you to all that weighed in. I chose tal's answer because I used his code for my controller; however, I could have just as easily chosen either j.'s or tim's instead. Thank you both as well. This was so damn simple to implement, and I think today marks the day that I'm beginning to fall in love with rails.

  Hi guys, I saw a couple of ways extending user information of users and decided to adopt the model inheritance method. for instance, I have : class Parent(User): contact_means = models.IntegerField() is_staff = False objects = userManager() Now it is done, I've downloaded django_registration to help me out with sending emails to new users. The thing is, instead of using registration forms to register new user, I want to to invoke the email sending/acitvation capability of django_registration. So my workflow is: 1. add new Parent object in admin page. 2. send email My problem is, the django-registration creates a new registration profile together with a new user in the user table. how do I tweak this such that I am able to add the user entry into the custom user table. I have tried to create a modelAdmin and alter the save_model method to launch the create_inactive_user from django_registration, however I do not how to save the user object generated from django_registration into my Parent table when I have using model inheritance and I do not have a Foreign key attribute in my parent model.

• Wrapping FUSE from Go

  I'm playing around with wrapping FUSE with Go. However I've come stuck with how to deal with struct fuse_operations. I can't seem to expose the operations struct by declaring type Operations C.struct_fuse_operations as the members are lower case, and my pure-Go sources would have to use C-hackery to set the members anyway. My first error in this case is "can't set getattr" in what looks to be the Go equivalent of a default copy constructor. My next attempt is to expose an interface that expects GetAttr, ReadLink etc, and then generate C.struct_fuse_operations and bind the function pointers to closures that call the given interface. • Positioning / Scrolling problem with Flex popup.

  Hi all, I'm trying to work out a specific problem I'm having with positioning in Flex using the PopUpManager. Basically I'm wanting to create a popup which will scroll with the parent container - this is necessary because the parent container is large and if the user's browser window isn't large enough (this will be the case the majority of the time) - they will have to use the scrollbar of the container to scroll down. • Determining which form input failed validation?

Either in javascript or other? Failing that, is there a good client-side validation library for MVC 1? Ideally I'd love to move to MVC2 and the client side validation built into that, but I am required to use MVC1

• Why is my multithreaded Java program not maxing out all my cores on my machine?

  Hi, I have a program that starts up and creates an in-memory data model and then creates a (command-line-specified) number of threads to run several string checking algorithms against an input set and that data model. The work is divided amongst the threads along the input set of strings, and then each thread iterates the same in-memory data model instance (which is never updated again, so there are no synchronization issues). I'm running this on a Windows 2003 64-bit server with 2 quadcore processors, and from looking at Windows task Manager they aren't being maxed-out, (nor are they looking like they are being particularly taxed) when I run with 10 threads. Is this normal behaviour? It appears that 7 threads all complete a similar amount of work in a similar amount of time, so would you recommend running with 7 threads instead? Should I run it with more threads?...Although I assume this could be detrimental as the JVM will do more context switching between the threads. Alternatively, should I run it with fewer threads? Alternatively, what would be the best tool I could use to measure this?...Would a profiling tool help me out here - indeed, is one of the several profilers better at detecting bottlenecks (assuming I have one here) than the rest? Note, the server is also running SQL Server 2005 (this may or may not be relevant), but nothing much is happening on that database when I am running my program. Note also, the threads are only doing string matching, they aren't doing any I/O or database work or anything else they may need to wait on. Thanks in advance, -James

• Installing and using acts-as-taggable-on

  This is going to be a really dumb question, I just know it, but I'm going to ask anyways because it's driving me crazy. How do I get acts-as-taggable-on to work? I installed it as a gem with gem install acts-as-taggable-on because I can't ever seem to get installing plugins to work, but that's a whole other batch of questions that are all probably really dumb. Anyways, no problems there, it installed correctly. I did ruby script/generate acts_as_taggable_on_migration and rake db:migrate, again no problems. I added acts_as_taggable to the model I want to use tags with, started up the server and then loaded the index for the model just to see if what I've got so far is working and got the following error: undefined local variable or method `acts_as_taggable' for #. I figure that just means I need to do something like require 'acts-as-taggable-on' to my model's file because that's typically what's necessary for gems. So I did that hit refresh and got uninitialized constant ActiveRecord::VERSION. I'm not even going to pretend to begin to know what that means went wrong. Did I go wrong somewhere or there something else I need to do. The installation instructions seem to me like they just assume you generally know what you're doing and don't even begin to explain what to do when things go wrong.

  I asked on SO a few days ago what was the simplest quickest way to build a wrapper around a recently completed database. I took the advice and used sqlmetal to build linq classes around my database design. Now I am having two problems. One, I don't know LINQ. And, two, I have been shocked to realize how hard it is to learn. I have a book on LINQ (Linq In Action by Manning) and it has helped some but at the end of the day it is going to take me a couple of weeks to get traction and I need to make some progress on my project today. I have a console app. The main table is the SupplyModel table. Most of the other tables are child tables of the SupplyModel table. I want to iterate through each of Supply Model records. I want to grab the data for a supply model and then DoStuff with the data. And I also need to iterate through the child records, for each supply model, for example the NumberedInventories and DoStuff with that as well. I need help doing this in VB rather than C# if possible. I am not looking for the whole solution...if you can supply a couple of code-snippets to get me on my way that would be great. • Why is iPdb not displaying STOUT after my input?

  I can't figure out why ipdb is not displaying stout properly. I'm trying to debug why a test is failing and so I attempt to use ipdb debugger. For some reason my Input seems to be accepted, but the STOUT is not displayed until I (c)ontinue. Is this something broken in ipdb? It makes it very difficult to debug a program. • Adding a font for use in ReportLab

  I'm trying to add a font to the python ReportLab so that I can use it for a function. The function is using canvas.Canvas to draw a bunch of text in a PDF, nothing complicated, but I need to add a fixed width font for layout issues. When I tried to register a font using what little info I could find, that seemed to work. But when I tried to call .addFont('fontname') from my Canvas object I keep getting "PDFDocument instance has no attribute 'addFont'" Is the function just not implemented? How do I get access to fonts other than the 10 or so default ones that are listed in .getAvailableFonts? Thanks. • JConsole does not connect when a program (running in eclipse) is waiting for a console input

  Hi, I have a problem similar to the one mentioned here. I have a program which launches a selenium browser and refreshes it every 2 seconds. My idea here was to monitor the memory usage of my application as the page is being hit. This console program does a "System.in.read" and when a user presses enter key, this stops the browser refresh thread. I run the program and it runs as I would expect it to. But when I fire jconsole and attach it to the process, it looks like jconsole waits forever to attach. This is because of the "System.in.read", apparently as shown in the JConsole source. In my code it makes perfect sense for me to terminte the browser when user presses something so is there any alternative available at all ? I guess the problem essentially boils down to multiple threads requesting system inputs at the same time? Is there a solution ? UPDATE 1: It seems this works fine when launching the class from a command line, however when I run from eclipse, jconsole cant connect. Any reasons ?
